    Is the new WA87 R2 still "warm" like the original Wa-87,which was "warm" like the original Neumann U-87 and not the U-87AI? The new Neumans are TOO BRIGHT.

      @@newgunguy4176 I agree with you. I don't know if the problem is that the components they used in the originals are unavailable or if they decided to go in a different direction sonically.

    Great job Mitch! Perfect mic demo for me as I have a similar home studio full of guitars, amps, studio desk and external analog gear in one room. I just record guitars and bass here and it was great seeing you put the WA-87 R2 in action for folks like us and our application--tracking guitars. I've been looking at adding a condenser mic as I just have dynamics (SM-57/e609). Thanks Sweetwater for doing this. I happen to be a big fan of Warm Audio and have WA-73 EQ, WA-76, EQP-WA and BUS-COMP and will grab this R2. With all of the WA stuff, I don't get into comparisons to the originals. I just care how they sound on their own right. It is excellent stuff and well built and a fraction of the original's.

      Hey, Joel! There were two signal paths used in the video: For the single-mic/mono instrument tracks, the WA87r2 went to a Warm Audio WA12 mkII preamp, then into a line input on a Universal Audio Apollo 8. No processing was applied. For the stereo tracks, two WA87r2 mics were fed into the mic inputs on the Apollo 8. Again, no processing applied. On my voice track, the mic went into the WA12 mkII. A bit of compression and limiting was applied, just to raise the level. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching, Mitch.

      The U87 is more common for voice overs but the 67 would be fine too. You could also just get the popular SM7B which also sounds great and probably better build quality since it’s a dynamic mic.

      From listening to samples on UA-cam it seems that the WA47 is more thick sounding. The WA87 will probably cut through a busy mix better and be a little more versatile .

    $599 from sweetwater. You can achieve same quality for less.
    Any decent mic can be Eq'd so don't get sucked in by a great sound mans ability to mix. Stereo always sounds great LOL

    • @DapperDanLovesYou
      @DapperDanLovesYou 4 роки тому +13

      I'd have to largely disagree with you there. While there IS a "law of diminishing returns" in microphones, and the cheap stuff is getting better while the good stuff is getting cheaper... there is more to a microphone than just its EQ. Quality components (from head to toe) will change the physical performance, and in some cases, have direct influence on the audible performance.
      And while modern editing/ post-production has come a long way, EQ will only really be able to accentuate or deemphasize what the microphone captured. Human hearing is quite sensitive; the slightest changes can have perceivable differences. Trombones, Trumpets, Baritones, and Tubas are all brass instruments. However, if you play the exact same frequency on each instrument, there is still a discernable difference in Timbre, making each instrument have a distinct and unique "tone." Likewise, a $100 trombone is rarely going to sound like a $1000+ trombone.

    • @anthonymiller7992
      @anthonymiller7992 4 роки тому +1

      @@DapperDanLovesYou i can't disagree with you at all. My main point that i wanted to remind people is that they are "selling" and or "promoting" a product.
      So in order to really see its "true" characteristics would be in the form of comparative demo with cheaper and more expensive like products recording the same source with all dials set at noon.

    • @anthonymiller7992
      @anthonymiller7992 4 роки тому

      @Spoon not necessarily. Different characteristics suit different people and or projects.
      Maybe you need a warmer signal versus a brighter one. Maybe one that picks up more highs and less lows.
      What we are seeing now is better technology that can capture a source and reproduce it with minimal change.
      If we mic a guitar cab we typically choose two mics, one warm and one bright then we mix to taste.
      I personally like the quality of this video where i would love to play with it. I'm just curious as to what the pre and post production process was like. How sensitive is it. Is it going to pickup the furnace when it kicks on or do i really need to use it in a well isolated environment. Its the little things

      So you think you can mix a MXL990 to sound like a Neumann U87? I think you're missing the point of this mic and others that a modeled down to the last detail on other legendary microphones. Or course there are great sounding less expensive mics. Do they sound like the U87? No.
