- I was held hostage at Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
A market vendor was determined to get the sale. Holding on for dear life as I tried to slip away. Find out more in this week's episode of Out to Lunch with Panpan.
Will he escape, will she get the overpriced sale?
Will I ever climatize to this heat and stop looking like I have been assaulted with a bucket of water?

Never ever shop at Bên Thanh market . The vendors there are very aggressive and they always tell you a very high price to begin with so you have to haggle very hard to get a good price . You rather go to Saigon Square . All the prices in that mall are set and reasonable , so you don't have to bargain . The rent in Bên Thanh market is also higher than in Saigon square , because it's a very touristy spot so everything there is more expensive
Yes, I did all my actual shopping at other places. Just wanted to come and see the famous market and lucky to have interesting experience for the video
Đúng rồi, nó thấy khách du lịch nước ngoài nó bán đắt
Shouldn’t say a price and then they agree and you walk away.
Was too late, I don't give the sale when being that aggressive with me.
Lời khuyên với mọi người là khi mua hàng chúng ta hãy mặc cả giá = thương lượng giá để mua được đồ ưng ý . Xin cảm ơn
Yes and if you don't want to bargain there are signs above some stalls that let you know if it is fixed price or not.
im ur #1fan
ben thanh market is for ppl don't care much about bargaining & high prices not only for clothing, souvenirs & eating bcz you'll find ev'rything under 1 roof; i'm just not sure why this particular market so notorious with over priced still standing...
Not sure, I guess it's notoriety and location near ho chi minh statue makes it a good spot for tourists?
I enjoyed my time there nonetheless
This is a really cool video :) I think what's missing is you talking more and some nice cinematic shots with some music
Thanks for the feedback, I think the hardest part so far is speaking to myself in public. This is the first of the hurdles to overcome.
@@outtolunchwithpanpan yeah I totally get you! You're doing great :) maybe try acting like you're talking to someone on FaceTime
@@RobertFromCali its one of those special facetime gopros hahaha
@@outtolunchwithpanpan exactly! 😆
Hahha, funny experience in Ben Thanh market
900k for shorts? No thank you
@@outtolunchwithpanpan yes sure, how terrible it is.
That's a big market, been twice.
Very big, almost got lost inside
You should find a trustworthy local friend(s) to hang out, so he/she can show you around good places to eat and buy things without getting ripped off.
I think that is a good idea, but I hope this video can also show some of the tactics and help people to learn from it
Ben thanh mark ☺️
Went to Ben Thanh Market last week, bought some t-shirts and paid abt 120k VND for each. Tried getting it down to 100k but they didn't budge. But really it's just nitpicking at that point. Felt the price was fair.
that's probably around $5 usd a piece, not bad. like polo shirts or plain t shirts ?
Just regular t-shirts like those Patagonia ones
@@safieeaziz2398 yeah maybe a little high price but still better than the cost of real ones haha
@@outtolunchwithpanpan very true, they're decent, hope they last a while. Did u get a smoothie to wash down that meal? They're good.
@@safieeaziz2398 I got a dragonfruit smoothie, was wonderful. Can confirm that some of these market clothes last a long time, I bought clothes in Bangkok in 2017 that I've almost worn every day and still in good condition
Looking and walking away at the same time, and only stopping if something really caught your eyes and again don't stay too long if you don't like the prices. as you may find the items at another stall.and yes they do like to grab hold of you, not a fan of this, but it's a everyday thing ok but still love this market 👍
I think will take a while to learn the ways of the market completely. I think part of the fun was going in blind
@@outtolunchwithpanpan always fun to try new things and places. but once you have brought a few things in these markets and they get to recognise you.
hopefully you be like a local customer and get better deals and service.
everytime i go back to my regular shopping places they are more fantastic toward me and less pressure sales 👍
@@kevininsiam I went to different market for other purchases, better prices haha
@@outtolunchwithpanpan agreed, so many places in ho chi minh so just enjoy every moment the memories will last a long time, it's a cool city to hangout just love the vibes and smiles. my beautiful saigon ❤ 👍
@@kevininsiam it is an amazing and beautiful city, full of amazing beautiful people. One of my favourite places in the world
My goodness I thought vietnam is cheap, that t shirt in Philippines just cost 200 pesos or 4 us dollars
Depends where you go, I found prices in phillipines and vietnam to be pretty similar. This place is tourist location so higher than normal
@@outtolunchwithpanpan if that is so nothing to complain especially these expats in philippines, they always compare prices in vietnam and philippines
@@dantesalazar7805 no complaints, I wasn't about to pay so much for these items, those are more expensive than my country. Just wanted to experience the market. Was worth it for sure. The food was great
12:20 wow they are more agressively grabby with you than they were with me. its because i responded violently right away though.
Maybe because sales have been low from covid, not sure but yeah was pretty intense
You want to have fun, you don't go to Vietnam. Thailand is the best place for shopping and women.
Haha vietnam is beautiful but maybe I come and visit Thailand soon ;) stay tuned to find out
