  • Real Madrid: The most successful European team of all time and a club that very many people love to hate.
Jose Mourinho: One of the most successful managers of all time and a man that divides opinions more than most figures in football.
Combine the two and what you got was one of the most dangerous teams in the world and potentially a contender for the greatest team of all time. A bold claim, I known. But humour me for a second.
This stint also ushered in one of the most toxic and controversial periods in recent football history.
Today, we'll be looking into the highs and lows of Mourinho's Madrid to take a look at what went right and what went horribly wrong.
    So let's get into it.

Guardiola recognized this, and in an attempt to stem the tide of lacklustre, lackadaiscal performance from players that had already won everything there was to win in club football (plus International football, for the Spanish contingent), he began tinkering with the formation excessively.
This ended up hastening the demise of that team. The strange 3-4-3 formation in big La Liga games, using Alves as an auxiliary midfielder, and buying Alexis Sanchez AND Fabregas when only one was needed, are prime examples of this

@@RafsanS15 That's the thing. It wasn't like those teams won against noobs. There were real competitions. This makes Atletico winning the league very impressive. Madrid went out against Bayern on penalty shootout. Bayern dominated a bit more but it was a 50-50 game and could go either way. They almost made a comeback against Dortmund. The amount of great chances they missed in the first 15 minutes was crazy. The game could've been the reverse of the first game and it would be fair..like a 4-1 for Madrid.. Zidane's Madrid was more versatile but they had better luck. There were instances Madrid could've been out during the three peat but luck favoured them compared to Mourinho years. They only struggled against Barca . Even that one, with a better luck, i.e without Pepe red card, it could've gone differently ...who knows?Pepe's red was controversial as Alves did a oscar worthy level acting there. It was only after that Messi was able to went solo. Messi scored plenty against Madrid but never after beating 4 players again or before ,why? The answer was Pepe. Pepe as a DM was what usually kept Madrid in the game.
Anyway, what I'm saying is Mourinho's Madrid was among the best versions of Madrid including Zidane's. Their difference in successes were not a clear indicator of the talent and what they were capable of. Against Atletico in 2013 copa del rey final, they hit the post 4 times!!! Don't get me wrong.Atletico deserved it but that was some unlucky stuff..Compare that to Ramos 92:48 in the UCL final...where luck favoured Madrid

I think Mourinho's Madrid suffered from a lack of luck in the CL semifinals, facing the best club side ever in 10/11 and with a dubious red card they didn't stand a chance over 2 legs, but would've probably beaten United in the final. Losing to Bayern on pens in their golden 11/12 season where again they would've most likely battered Chelsea in the final. And finally coming up against Lewandowski's career golden hour in 12/13.
Had they won the Champions League in any of those 3 seasons I think the general outlook on that Madrid team and possibly individuals like Mourinho and Ronaldo would be very different.

Mourinho's Madrid always make me entertained that time. 4-0, 5-1, 6-0, everytime we beat other La Liga teams was just an ordinary day for us that time. Now? Heck, we even struggle to beat Villareal nowadays. La Decima, Undecima, Duodecima, and Decimotercero all came within Mou's team-legacy at Madrid. I feel bad to say Ancelotti and Zidane were riding on Mou's legacy, but hey it's really them who made it possible (Ramos, Pepe, Modric, Ronaldo, Di Maria, Xabi, etc), all of their mentality can't be produced if not by Mourinho himself. And of course, all of them are really talented players as well. So that's why, not winning CL that year (2011/2012) really stinging for Madrid fans that time for sure.
Sometimes you don't need a masterclass tactic to coach at Madrid, but you need a masterclass mentality to win at Madrid.

I kinda agree with that despite being a Barca fan, I think real Madrid should've won a cl in mourinho's tenure, and tbh the victories that came after was definitely because of mourinho's mentality that stuck with the players even after he left. Also I don't think Zidane was an extraordinary manager he just managed to be there at the right time and be there when the players were probably at their peak. That was prime Ramos, Varane, Navas, kroos, modric,. And also amazing as always CR7, benzema, bale. But still without mou I don't think real Madrid would've won so many ucl titles. Maybe 1 or 2 but definitely not 4 after he left. Barca on the other hand, well what to say after enrique tenure we were never the same. Neymar left, suarez kicked out, messi forced to leave now, but hopefully both real n Barca rebuild well so we can see amazing classicos again.

Great as usual my friend, very insightful and objective, you’re my favorite.
In many ways this Real reminds me of peak Arsenal, as good as they’re they underachieved, the records and performances didn’t match the titles. Especially with Real, they remind of great fighters who can be in the p4p list and beat everyone else except the champion.
The problem with madrid is obvious (Barcelona) and I believe till this day that Madrid won’t be a consistent winner against Barcelona at that time because they lack the necessary tools to beat them.
Let’s breakdown the problem, Jose first match against Barca was a disaster for obvious reasons, he tried new tactics that the team didn’t do before against a team who’s too good to be beat by experiment; a high pressure with a high defensive line takes long time to develop, especially if you know the history behind the players, for example Ronaldo who doesn’t apply the pressure since Man Utd days or Ramos who doesn’t know how to defend in high line. Jose corrected his mistakes and went back on what he do best (parking the bus) the tactics that made him knock Barca out of the champions league. The reason why that tactic didn’t work consistently is because Real was a very offensive minded team throughout the season and they made the defensive switch only when they face Barca. In order to perfect “Parking the bus” you have to do it more frequently, not only that his defenders as good as they’re, their tactical awareness is no where near the guys who perfected the tactic, guys like Terry, Zanetti, Carvalho, Mekalele etc.
In order to beat Barca you have to apply the same tactics that Mourinho chose in the first match, he had the right idea but a terrible execution. Exactly like what Bayern did, disturbing the building from back by applying constant pressure from the attackers, high line, focusing on set pieces, initiate the attack don’t wait for the counter, etc. And I believe that this great team of Barca will always suffer against Bayern for the reasons I mentioned.

19:55 "you're an attacker that's just gotten past the madrid midfield, congrats Sergio Ramos and Pepe are waiting to greet you". LOL
