This ended up earning him a move to Barcelona where initially despite the fact that he played a role in their title win in 2023 where he had double digits in both goals and assists, many of the fans weren’t convinced by his performances as he couldn’t dribble his man to save his life, he looked as if he didn’t fit their team and was lacking confidence in his overall play and although last season, he was in impressive form, getting 10 goals and 13 assists in all competitions on a struggling team while being injured for a lot of games, he had some big moments for them in the latter stages of the champions league where he had 3 goals across both legs against PSG which is a performance that a lot of people have forgotten about as a combination of the emergence of Lamine Yamal on the right wing and the fact that throughout the summer, they were being linked with a move for Nico Williams, many of their fans felt as if they were better off selling him to raise some cash due to their financial situation and they didn’t believe he was good enough for their club. However this season, Raphina has been in the best form of his career and he looks as if he’s a better player now than he was when he first joined Barcelona and under Hansi Flick, just like the rest of the team, he has helped him elevate his game to another level as he’s more deadly lethal and consistent and whether he’s playing on the left or through the middle as an attacking midfielder, it doesn’t matter as he’s been equally good and effective in both positions as his strengths are being utilized to good effect as he’s playing with a lot of freedom and we see it in his confidence. Another player who thrived under Xavi, but has been a different beast with Flick in charge. As we speak, after his hat trick against Bayern Munich and his goal and assist against Real Madrid yesterday at the Bernabeu, he now has 10 goals and 9 assists 19 G/A in all competitions (6 goals and 8 assists in La Liga, 4 goals and an assist in the Champions League), so many games with multiple goal contributions, he’s had 2 hat tricks, multiple games with a goal and an assist, he basically gets a goal or an assist in every game he plays in and in fewer games this season, he has more goals than he did in his first 2 seasons at the club and unlike certain players, he’s not relying on penalties or VAR decisions to get easy goals. Everyone is talking about Yamal which makes sense because we’ve never seen a player this good let alone someone who’s only 17 years old, at the same time he’s been equally important if not better than him in certain games although everyone on the team has been great. He’s been so good to the point where many of their fans don’t even want Nico to come anymore as he’s become less of a priority for them. Personally, I don’t think that we should be acting as if Flick is the only manager in which Raphinha played well under as in recent seasons, he has quietly been one of the best wingers in the world who has finally started to get the recognition he deserves, I mean he’s had double digits in goals in 4 consecutive seasons for 2 different clubs and for someone who was seen as a flop initially and someone they tried to get rid of every summer, he’s had back to back seasons with 10+ goals and 10+ assists at Barcelona, he’s going to achieve this feat again this season and get even more goal contributions combined with the rate he’s heading in meaning that his stats were good he was always producing in the final third and he did perform in Xavi’s system also he actually performs for both club and country which is something you can’t say about a certain Brazilian who’s about to have a Ballon Dor, not saying he’s better and while he’s not known for being his flashiness, his style of play is distinctive from other Brazilian wingers, whether it’s his goals and assists or movements runs and defensive work off the ball, he can do it all and any manager would want him on their team. I have a feeling that Raphinha is a genuine contender for the 2025 Ballon Dor if Barcelona are able to win a couple of trophies this season and he gets at least 35-40+ goal contributions.
