Factionism, lack of screenplay writers/ lack of originality/ critics who are friends with industry (you Anupama) and out of touch with people/ movies unrelatable to viewers- disconnect with audience / HIgh salaries of actors / ego / overexposure - no mystery about performers behind the scenes / mass production vs mass appeal / boomer energy of old production houses / insipid music, no focus on BGM and music directors seem disconnected from storyline.

The star culture has gone because Actors are no more connected with the Audience..If you see south actors firstly they are not that exposed and also they have certain rootedness because of which Audience and normal people can relate with them more...On the other hand if you see new Actor , Actresses their lifestyle, interest is something no one can connect..So even when they try to behave like normal people in some interviews that looks fake.. It's fine to live a lifestyle the way you want but if you are a public figure and behave like Hollywood actors , obsessed with them and rather than celebrating Indian festivals more interested in celebrating Halloween people find it weird..I still feel Amir Khan, Akshay Kumar , or Sharukh Khan have some connection and relativeness..You enjoy watching their interviews and their dressing style..Even Actresses like Deepika, Shraddha they still behaves like normal people or talks about relative things and have certain rootedness..Also shows like Koffee with Karan where young actor , actresses only talk about sex, dating , Hollywood obsessions ,with whom they want to hook up creates a lack of respect towards them from Audience..They even openly express they can't or don't like to speak in hindi..Their dresses, way of life , can't speak in hindi attitude is really irritating and Annoying..

I'm a non Indian American who loves the last 5 decades of Indian film. Main Hoon Na was my first Indian film and I felt I'd never seen a movie before watching that. I now watch more Indian films than Hollywood content.
And I've also noticed the change in quality with Bollywood films over the years. So here are my two cents:
    1) HEART.
    2) MODERNIZE AS MAKES SENSE BUT DON'T WESTERNIZE. I hate it when Bollywood westernizes what should never be westernized. The last thing the world needs is to make everything MORE like "Hollywood" including and especially like western rap style music videos.
That can be boring, not creative, unoriginal, and it's been done to death and wasn't even good in the first place.
Keep what makes Indian culture, stories, themes, struggles, and films unique in all the world. That is what speaks to your fan base, is your great marketing niche locally and globally, AND your strength.
Universal and timeless themes of humanist, human rights, women's and children's rights and social justice themes, yes. "Modernize" in that sense (human rights and themes of needed social improvements) but don't westernize - keep what's great about south Asian culture and traditions and values, and spirituality too.
    3) MASALA MUSICALS. Don't get rid of the things that make Indian film so unique like masala musicals. Over the top aspects when it makes a better film (comedy, melodrama, song & dance numbers, music, scenery, set pieces, drama) and other unique ways of story telling.
    4) WHERE IS ALI ZAFAR?! That's a giant star and talent right under your nose in ALL AREAS (actor, writer, producer, singer, dancer, composer). He should be huge.
    5) WHERE ARE THE GREAT MUSIC, SOUNDTRACKS, & SONG & DANCE NUMBERS and amazing unique choreography Bollywood is world famous for? Farah Khan, Aiyaa, Main Hoon Na, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Dil Se, Don, KANK, Om Shanti Om, Jodah Akbar, films from those eras had amazing music and dance numbers. The more recent Teefah in Trouble was great too.
So much of the newer item numbers look and sound like your average Western music video with western style music, skimpy leotard / swimsuit type outfits for the women, and strip club / rap style dance styles. Find a way to make things fresh but also make them original and keep them Indian.
    6) GREAT "BIG" MOVIES - BUT GREAT SMALLER MOVIES TOO. Great simple, original, compelling, well written stories. Well written, directed, acted, filmed movies.
    6) Great films that are also FAMILY FRIENDLY. That's a unique strength and are the hallmark of Bollywood's past - great films the whole family can watch, discover and grow as favorite films as family traditions together.
    7) Unique, compelling stories that are uniquely regional, Indian / south Asian, Middle West.
    8) Newer stars, actors and actresses, AND the "older" ones too (male but especially female) - in starring and/or co-starring and support roles, who we will always love and still want to see: Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Juhi Chawla, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, Sushmita Sen, Konkana Sen, Aishwarya, and so many others.

One thing is that PATHAN isn't going to change anything even if it does pretty well on the box-office, but it will worsen the condition if it fails to perform well. Let me explain, it's a high budget film featuring superstars, it's already an event film and people know it's gonna be good. But when a small film with new actors and low budget does well on the box-office, then only something will have changed.
Producers will be motivated to try something new and focus on content oriented films. However if PATHAN fails, everyone will be like.. if SRK can't save bollywood even with PATHAN, then nothing can.

South films have novelty factor with new faces who display some excellent acting. But they are also rooted. They tell the story of the common man without preaching or looking down. They don't tell a generic story in a generic town. Rather they name the town and the actors adopt that particular accent and look the part and hence very relatable to the core audience of that state. The script writers know the local politics and caste hierarchy. Do Hindi films consider any of that?

movies have to be made with love, it is at the end of the day a form of art. viewers can sense when they are pulled towards a gimmick, unfortunately most of the bolly movies are gimmicky with little or no love or even understanding. Pakeezah wasn't made after any consumer study but it was made with love and a genuine ache, the ache to tell a story is missing. all the movies that we now refer as classics were made because the filmmaker had to tell that story and he/she had utmost conviction. now most of the bolly stories are made on a perceived belief system, we feel this is what 'they' want. they as in the ones who are paying the ticket. this formula has failed Bollywood In the last few years. but there is hope as we will always have the genuine storytellers, though they might not have a posh postal address.

This brings to mind what Karan Johar said in one of his interviews last year. Bollywood film makers has lost their conviction. There was sincerity and Originality in the films that were once made that has been replaced by formulas, remakes and franchises. This success of this template just made people lazy and put most writers and directors in a box. Bollywood needs to take a step back and return to telling proper home grown stories, invest in a new crop of writers, actors and directors and back it with conviction. They've spent too much time depending on the stars that were instead of developing the stars that could be. Anyhu, I'm rooting for Bollywood this year. I hope it can come back with bang

I could think of 4 factors into why I believe Bollywood has struggled so much for the past few years. Just an opinion among many.
    1. The pandemic changed how people value their time and money. If the film isn't going to guarantee a 100% must-watch-in-the-theater experience, then why waste your money and time? Anyways, what's the rush to watch a film on the big screen anymore when it'll be on OTT within a month or few? Now I personally think this is a bit of a shame, because it means non-action films or non-mass films will struggle at the box office, even though many of these non-action/mass films do deserve a theatrical release (like Qala or Monica, O My Darling! to name a few).
    2. Bollywood/Hindi film music has just been awful for many films in the past few years. Post 2016, only a few Hindi films have delivered a stellar soundtrack or that one hit song. Music was a driving factor in getting people to the theaters. But for some reason (or reasons), Bollywood songs have been just unbearable to listen to for the past few years. I'm not saying that for the past few years all Hindi film soundtracks suck, buuut a good number of them do and that is insane. I personally think this has a lot to do with a lack in bringing new talent and Hindi music losing its Indian roots.
    3. There is no denying that there is a social/political level to Hindi films struggling. There is a disconnect between the Bollywood elite and the common Indian. I do think that the nepotism debate has a huge hand to play at how the Hindi film industry is viewed and treated. Now, the debate isn't anything new, but it was brewing for quite some time and hit a peak when covid began. And with OTT being an option, people truly realized "I don't need to give my money to see these elites on the screen, who don't care about "commoners" trying to make it in the industry. I can watch this shit at home for cheap (or even for free!)"
    4. This perhaps goes into my first point, but it's insane how many crappy films have been coming out of Bollywood - especially from leading stars. There was a time when if an actor was to be in a film, one could almost guarantee that film would 100% satisfy the audience. But look at the films that some leading stars, like Akshay Kumar or Ranveer Singh, have taken since at least 2020 - most of those films are bad, or average at best. The audience is not going to watch a movie just because a Ranveer Singh or Salman Khan is in it. The film has to be good. I think this has a lot to do with, yes, nepotism, but also just not getting/allowing for new talent to come into Hindi cinema. We'll need new faces both on the screen and behind the screen who have true talent and hard work for many audiences to change how they perceive Bollywood. Current writers and aspiring writers especially have to be motivated and given the right amount of support to change the amount of low quality movies releasing.

Just ORIGINAL CONTENT ..it is must 🙌❤️...we are done with remakes...
As someone who is grown up watching Bollywood films, it is heartbreaking to see this phase of bollywood 💔
Either the films are not working bcauz content is not engaging enough or even if it works (like Drishyam 2) it is a remake... Even though south remakes are successful audience will still not give the full credit to the makers and the actors no matter how good they done there job ...
So let's do something original... it's high time we bring back that old charm of bollywood ❤️
And it doesn't mean just the Angry young man phase but the CONVICTION we had on our stories...
I mean even the Director of KGF 2 said he took inspiration from movies like sholay and other bollywood films...
Mr. S S Rajamouli have mentioned in several interviews how Hindi films have influenced him...
Even though I love south films and i genuinely think they are doing a great job...but it's unfair when people say things like "South have took over and bollywood is over" and such things 🤦...i mean comparisons are just gonna make the whole environment more toxic...
I hope this is just a phase...and anyways many Hindi and south actors and directors are already collaborating with each other....i think soon we are going to break those barriers of Hindi/Marathi/South cinema or regional cinema and it will be an "Indian Cinema" 🙌😍
Let's hope for a better future not just for bollywood but for a whole Film industry 🤞❤️

Excellent content should be the only focus. Earlier people used to go to cinema halls to see the stars but now due to their overexposure on social media, audience would go to cinema halls only if the content is excellent. Just ‘good’ is not enough because there is lot of good stuff to watch on OTT already. Blaming corporate production houses does not make any sense. South stars are not overexposed on social media plus the translated dubbing is getting better and better with each movie. So there certainly is novelty factor intact with these movies. Also, they have some new stories to tell like Kantara, Drishyam, KGF, etc.

To answer the last question, I think Bollywood has begun to overproduce films for the sake of making films - but what we as an audience want is films that are made with conviction and passion, with a captivating story , well developed script, compelling characters, and a film we will be happy to rewatch again and again. we are missing the superstar quality we had of the 90s-2000s, so as an audience we feel less faith in newcomer actors who are signing to poorly written scripts and way too many movies . That being said, I really believe like SRK said- he is the last of the stars , if Bollywood doesn’t jump back at the box office with Pathaan (which it will !) , Bollywood writers need to get back to the drawing board of what makes a film TIMELESS and compelling- rather than simply instragramable

Especially with streaming kicking down the wall between movies from various regions and making it easier for people to watch a Vikram Vedha when it came out in 2017, expecting them to be excited enough for the same movie again in 2022 to make back a vastly bigger budget seems completely ridiculous to me.

    1. Just look at the Top 6 grossers you listed. That list tells you everything you need to know about what the audience wants.
Q - after Brahmastra, what is the next highest grossing Bollywood film?
    2. Stop making every film song a banger,a party song, or something with dhol! When you go to Hindi karaoke, no one sings any songs from the past 5-10 years because there are not songs, they are party anthems. Instead they dance to them at wedding receptions and nightclubs.
    3. The fact that South films are releasing in Hindi dub in Hindi belt theaters, TV, and OTT means that Bollywood has competition, not that South films are better.
    4. Unfortunately the typical South film has more misogyny, patriarchy, machismo than Bollywood, and unfortunately that speaks to the Hindi Belt (though their flavors of misogyny, patriarchy, machismo are different), hence average South films would do better up there.
    5. Movies like GoW and especially Sonchirya were ahead of their time and would do even better today.
    6. Tell Akshay Kumar to stop releasing 1 crappy movie per month! He is single handedly taking down Bollywood as a Brand and turning it into the laughing stock of India. He should release max 4 films per year, and each script should have enough time for rewrites.
    7. For north Indians, south films are essentially north films without the baggage of known stars, so they can enjoy a film as a film itself. If you had cast those South films with only Bollywood actors as leads, they wouldn't have done as well in box office because they come with star baggage and branding. Similarly, the reverse is also not true - see Liger for proof. This means you need to cultivate a fresh crop of Bollywood actors. Karan Johar understood this when he made SOTY. But that was a decade ago - who is doing this now?
    8. With the exception of Dhadak, Jhanvi Kapoor has only been doing solo projects her entire career so far. This looks like the height of nepotism. While she might be talented, the right to command such a significant portion of Bollywood output, solo and so soon, hasn't been earned. Hence the cry against nepotism. By contrast, aside from Highway (which was essentially an art film), Alia Bhatt did a number of rom coms and multi starrers until she finally made Raazi. Samantha did the same until her solo Hey Baby. Rashmika has still only made rom coms and multi starrers. And who needs a Mili when Helen is already organically a wonderful film and is available dubbed in Hindi? At least Good Luck Jerry is steeped in its north east milieu.
    9. It doesn't matter if it's urban or rural, rich or poor - if you give Amitabh Bachchan a chance to genuinely act (in interesting stories) instead of just play the grandfather, ppl will show up for it. Piku, Badla, and Pink were genuinely successful films and would still be today.
    10. War was a genuine hit and would still be in the today, it might have equaled or bested Brahmastra if it released in 2022. People want to see money and effort onscreen, by the actors and by the production side.
    11. You need rom coms, romances, love triangles, and multistarrers to build your next generation of actors and actresses, because that's what they cut their teeth on in developing their acting skills. They also bond the audience with the stars. Again KJo understood this with SOTY followed by the mid-2010s rom com revival.
    12. You need fresh blood behind the camera. The leading producers, directors, and casting directors can't still be the same ones from the '90s & '00s. They were fresh then but stale now, and they turn to the familiar stars instead of grooming new actors.
    13. Bahubali was a precursor to what's happening today. It taught the global Indian audience that they can expect original rooted and historical storytelling that feels more like a Hollywood production, with excellent screenplays, and didn't require known (to all) actors to put butts in seats.
    12. If the '90s-'10s were about modernizing the subject matter, the acting styles, and the millieu of Indian films, the next 20+ years will be about bringing modern technicraft of filmmaking to increasingly Indian stories and milieu.
    13. At least at the multiplexes, if you bring down the ticket price for midbudget films, while keeping them high for expensive projects, families will still come out to theaters for midbudget films. But you need to bring the ticket price down low enough to make it affordable for families.

It is a simple fact that, earlier southern language movies were not released in Hindi, so there was no competition for Bollywood. The same movie would have done amazing business if it was released in 2019 without a dubbed version available on UA-cam

Hindi movies, also known as Bollywood films, have been facing challenges in terms of box office performance in recent years. One of the main reasons for this is the increased competition from Hollywood and regional cinema. With the rise of streaming platforms, audiences have access to a wider variety of content, making it harder for Bollywood films to stand out.
Another factor that contributes to the decline in the performance of Hindi movies in theaters is the proliferation of cheap criticism on social media. Many people who post reviews online do not have a deep understanding of film-making technique and the business of filmmaking. As a result, their reviews may not be accurate or objective, and can potentially harm a film's reputation. Additionally, the rise of social media has given a platform for people who may not have any knowledge about film-making but have a strong opinion about it.
However, it's important to note that despite these challenges, Bollywood continues to produce a significant number of films each year and has a dedicated fanbase. Additionally, the industry is making efforts to adapt to the changing landscape by experimenting with new genres and formats, such as web series, and exploring new distribution channels.
In conclusion, while Hindi movies are facing challenges in terms of box office performance, the industry is still active and continues to evolve. However, the cheap criticism on social media, by non-competent people, is not good for the growth of good cinema. It is important to have an unbiased and well-informed review of a film to help the industry grow and improve

To invest one's energy and time in a three hour movie has become an even pricier choice. Why waste money and time when one can easily be entertained in other ways? Bollywood needs to find some PASSION, AUTHENTICITY AND HONESTY. They need to go back to their roots and celebrate what makes India unique and special. The amount of stories which can come from the rich history, culture, heritage and even from the common man of India must surely be enough inspiration for bollywood. Bollywood is victim to the unconscious bias that whatever the West does is the best. The intent of the makers in Bollywood must change - the primary intent must be to have a burning desire to tell a sincere story from the heart. Money will follow. When producers and directors start realising that they have to be responsible and accountable for the budgets and making a good movie .
When scripts are not compromised with . Writers are given 200% hike on their salaries and they are given enough credit as much as the directors . That's when we will see a change .
Also what baffles me is actors and they are some of the biggest of the stars are not bothered even if 3-4 films of theirs fail consecutively. They believe in making films and they move on .
I will state examples of SRK films since I am his fan .
    1. When Anand L rai delivered a terrible film why was their no accountability ? How can SRK himself approve such a script ? Who are the people in red chillies who went ahead with the film? And when it fails they claim that it happens in creative process and all that bull shit .no sir if u are making a film with SRK it's a responsibility you have to be accountable .
    2. Why did Raees and Dilwale release in a clash ? We already have less screens? Why does bollywood as an industry compete with each other when already making in efficient films ? .
Dilwale was terrible and raees was mediocre ? Post that there was no accountability from SRK himself no one sat down to understand why his films were not working . Rohit shetty and rahul dholakia moved on and so did srk .
    3. How on earth can srk approve a film like jab Harry met Sejal? It was a terrible film and again srk moved on . No accountability again.
    4. If you as an actor don't want to make sure a good product is made why will the audiences support you. I don't care about the rest of the Bollywood but a star like srk making these mistakes frustrates me 🙏🙏🙏

If they start budgeting, making movies for less than 100 Crores, stop spending money on publicity, make it on time and come up with original scripts. Trust me, Bollywood will automatically revive. A movie should be made only when there is a compelling story to tell with a tight script not because the producer and a 50 plus hero wants to make money by making a mediocre movie for a festival season. The Bollywood stars and the starlets need to lose those inflated egos of thinking of them as demigods, learn humility and manners in their daily lives and take audiences feedback seriously by observing the mega stars/stalwarts of the southern Industries. Stop giving the star kids the limelight and Vogue cover page when they have not even done a single film while the real talented ones have to go through casting couch and what not. Also stop Hinduphobia and glorifying other religions through your movies as soft agenda. All religions are equal and deserve equal respect. Give chance to the new talents and stop ending people's career / Lives /Livelihoods because of some personal grudge with a big movie mafia. Learn how to be innovative and tell the story of the soil from someone like SS Rajamouli who single handedly took RRR to Hollywood and nobody complained why it's a 3-hour long movie or why there are so many songs/dances. I know it sounds almost like preaching to the choir, but any change is difficult to begin with. start small and when the people see some value and content, they would like to put their hard-earned money. Bollywood has long taken the Indian audience for granted just like the politicians and trying to sell the old rotten liquor in a new bottle. People are more woke now thanks to OTT and regional movie industries who have been doing great work since long but has always been overshadowed by Bollywood big daddies. So, either prosper or perish!

JUST STOP MAKING REMAKES IF WE CAN WATCH ORIGINAL IN OTT.
AND STARTING MAKING ORIGINAL AND INNOVATIVE CONTENT RATHER THAN JUST TRYING TO COPY OTHERS.
THE HUGE PROBLEM IS SUPPOSE AS AN EXAMPLE IF ONE BIOPIC WORKS NOW EVERYONE WANTS TO MAKE BIOPIC WITHOUT HAVING PROPER STORY OR EVEN GOOD SCREENPLAY.
GOOD ORIGINAL CONTENT WITH RIGHT EXECUTION IS THE WAY TO MOVE FORWARD.
AND JUST FOR GOD SAKE STOP MAKING REMAKES
(I KNOW DRISHYAM2 WORKED BUT IT WAS A ALREADY FRANCHISE)
WE ALL HAVE COME TO A STAGNATION POINT.
AUDIENCE WANTS ORIGINAL CONTENT WITH SOME KIND OF SUPRISE PACKED IN IT.
AND RIGHT MOW THATS WHAT SOUTH IS DOING.

Reduce songs redo. Bring more original chartbusters. Go through dialogue and the scripts multiple times. Take actors that suit the roles, not just big names. Dig into desi stories, folk tales, indian novels of all languages and make epic movies based on desi stories. Focus on cinematography.

Hindi movie scripts need to improve! Even pathaan script was laughable! Great vistas and beautiful people but very weak story..

And that's sad why? It's about time that films from other languages shine and get their due.
