I love the pattern of how an elf (Serie) taught magic to a human (Flamme), who in turn taught an elf (Frieren), who in turn taught a human (Fern). And all four of them are extremely skilled and powerful mages.
Frieren gave Kanne & Lawine that godmotherly assistance and her viewpoint of how Mages should be is fantastic, that's her adventurous spirit that blossomed after her 10 year journey in the Heroes party.
So hear me out: Lawine's mom + Sein, somehow. Then Sein rejoins the group with stepdaughter Lawine in tow, and she brings her "good friend" Kanne, which gives Fern some big sisters to help her be less mean to Stark, and Stark would have Sein as a (surprisingly) emotionally healthy male role model - not a father figure or a brother, but like... a cool uncle. Ooooo, wait, there's more! After that, they find Gorilla and it turns out he was turned to stone or something but Sein can fix him, then they run into Kraft - everybody loves that guy - and he joins up because he is inspired by meeting Sein and Gorilla to travel to Aureole and reconnect with the OG Goatee Priest. Oh, and they get a kitten and name it Flaum because that's how names work in this show. You're welcome, internet.
I seriously doubt Frieren is "greater" than Series, at least not by that mage's standards. From the context we can see that Serie was already old (and considering Flamme's reputation as a super genius who's the founder of humanity's magic and the fact that series was her master, probably the strongest known mage in the world even a thousand years ago or close enough) and revered before Frieren even met Flamme and started her apprenticeship. And the reason Flamme give for Series not being able to beat the Demon King isn't a lack of power, it's the inability to visualise the ensuing peace (Series is hindered by the fact that she doesn't really want peace). Frieren had a whole party to beat the Demon King and struggled against Qual at the time. To me they're pretty clearly establishing the pecking order and Series is way above Frieren. That being said greatness has other definitions than the ones this first class mage is using (magical power and knowledge basically), Frieren is the one, alongside her companions, who brought peace (more or less xD It's never gonna be perfect!) to the world. That's another way to be the greatest so I don't disagree with you either. She's also the one trying to understand her fellow people while Series does seem set in her ways. There are many other ways in which Frieren seem greater than Series.
Agreed. Its pretty clear that Frieren is nowhere near the experience or strength of Serie (though how old she is we dont actually know). There's definitely an argument to be made that Frieren is stronger than Flamme in terms of mana, though given that Flamme seems to have visited Heaven and also possibly predict the future to a limited extent (regarding her planting the tree that hid the grimoire that Frieren needed to know about Heaven's location) I think its clear that Frieren still hasn't lived up to Flamme's sheer genius yet due to living in obscurity for over 800 years after Flamme's death. If she'd continued being a public figure during that time, then she might be on Flamme's level of experience by now - at the expense of not actually being able to defeat the Demon King. With Serie, given what's revealed in the last 6 episodes of the anime, I think that it'd be ludicrous to argue that Frieren is greater than Serie in terms of strength or prowess. Frieren would be lucky to survive an encounter with Serie if Serie actually meant her harm, though she's definitely the next most powerful living mage that we've seen so far (the only competition seems to be other Elves and a demons, but we've not seen any mages like that yet). However, Frieren is perhaps the greatest mage in terms of compassion and attitude. Frieren genuinely loves magic in a way that Serie doesnt and that Flamme seemingly suppressed within herself. That is arguably why Frieren is the greatest mage. Ultimately though, the whole 'a mage greater than Serie' thing is discussed only by two characters, Genau and Sense, both of whom seem to know nothing about Frieren beside that she's an elf and that she was part of the party that killed the Demon King. If they're making educated guesses based off of what they know about elves (most of which must come from Serie), then they could suspect that Frieren is actually much much older than she really is, old enough to be a peer of Serie possibly, which is what I believe they are thinking when Frieren breaks the barrier.
frieren isnt even close to serie and spoilers frieren herself said she cant even imagine a scenario where she could beat serie and that serie is the greatest mage in the world
I think the "lack of passion" statement is rooted in how Frieren and Serie view magic in very different ways. To Serie magic is a means to an end. Not the end goal itself. So Frieren not wanting a powerful spell is like saying there wasn't anything she wanted to achieve. Aka, a lack of drive
There´s way more depth to Serie than you think right now, so please don´t judge her just on a surface level. She´s definitely one of the most interesting characters, you´ll see 🙂
episodes 21-22 of Sousou No Frieren were incredible! Frieren absolutely dominated the exam, showing off her amazing skills and determination. The intensity of the competition and the way she handled every challenge had me on the edge of my seat. This series keeps getting better and better.
I haven't read this part of the manga so I don't know if there's more context there but I think fern was mad the next morning because she realized Frieren blew through most of the party's Money the night before on Dinner. And she let Stark go that easily because the job would bring some immediate money back to the party and as she said, he didn't have any bad intent
Richter wasn't fighting for no reason though lol, they already explained why they had to fight, they stole the stile from Frieren so obviously Frieren will come after them, taking out Lawine/Kanne is far smarter than fighting Frieren directly, (because you need all party members to pass" He's simply practical and doesn't care about what people think of him, I personally find him fascinating. On Serie saying Frieren lacked ambition, Frieren seeking out spells herself is really just something she enjoys, its part of the fun of Magic, Serie is offering spells that could be game changers (overwhelming strength, Healing any disease) I don't think accepting a spell from her is makes you any less ambitious, especially if you have a clear goal in mind .
Not Ali crying during a steak-eating scene... I know we've said we're all crybabies here but where do we draw the line 😂 Also one thing I REALLY appreciate with this anime, among all the other things, is that it's a masterclass in subverting expectations and subverting tropes. There are tons of examples where the story seems to be leading up to something, and possibly because of expectations set by other anime or other media, we think we know where it's going, but this show just casually does the opposite and it always ends up for the better. One example is in the flashback with Stark's brother. It's clear the show up building up in a way that lets us assume he mistreats Stark along with the rest of the village, but no, instead he's the only one who's kind to him. Another example is in these last episodes, so many of the mages are initially portrayed as possibly cold-blooded killers but pretty much each and every one turns out to have much more depth and don't really want to kill but are just using threats to get their way. Speaking of, I really like Übel because she's so hard to get a read on. Is she as much of a cold-blooded killer as we are led to believe? We don't know for sure. But it's interesting that she has this unique ability of quickly learning the spells of the people she empathizes with, and we saw that she learned Wirbels spell so we know it's true. At the very least this means she isn't a complete psychopath, because people like that aren't capable of empathy. Now the question is, is she following Land, the blonde guy, around because she's just really intrigued by him or because she just want to exploit her empathic ability to learn his incredibly powerful cloning spell? This anime really has some amazing depth IMO.
its so funny how anime only's think frieren is stronger than serie when serie is explicitly stated to be the closest mage to the goddess of creation lol
I knew you were not going to cry in these episodes. Are you part Latina? I can see the Dominican flag in the back. It would be nice to here some spanish time to time to your latinamerican veiwers ☝🏻
Haha im getting better at being less of a cry baby. 😆 yes, I’m Dominican and Russian! I could look into perhaps doing some Spanish stuff here and there :)
To be honest, with that voice, himmel could probably say anything and it would sound like the wisest thing ever.
Crazy the VA also voiced Bakugou lmao
Now imagine everything he says as Himmel but in Bakugo’s voice.

Richter is one of my favorite characters. Sure he's overconfident but definitely has the skills to back it up.

Denken is easily one of my fav chars, usually dont like his type of character but something about him has charm
It's probably more that they don't usually do the character type right. This show got 10/10 char building. =3

When Fern's team asked about other spells she could cast during the rain, I really wanted her to pull out a mug and cast the "warm tea" spell.

You can see Frieren suggesting that meal to Stark.
which is Himmel's favorite, as we learned way way back in, I think, episode 3...

i still get chills when frieren shatters that barrier
denken got that dawg in him for real.
perfect start to the weekend 😎
The Fern/ Stark interaction at the begining of 22 is peak adorable.
How to know when Fern is happy? Easy. She does her Happy Walk.

6:17 be honest here serie is just too OP
In this whole anime, there's no character you dont like. Lecker = Delicious
