Cheers, we don't know how good we have it locally, I used to guide guy's from the states who we're astounded at the quality of the fishing the Hutt produces for such an urban river. More fun than the Tongaririo and more satisfying as well! Andrew
Nice action. As someone who has only recently move to "the Hutt" this is very inspiring. I have gone and dusted off the 6 weight, put the Tongariro gear into storage, and bought a season licence.
troutboynz hello, I am a few months ago in the area, and I love to go out with you or coordination, and learn more about this fishing, I practice two years ago, but I'm not professional. cheers..
As always, Andrew, nice vid. Do you ever bother with the Akatarawa? By the way, I fished the Ohau nr Levin a few yrs back one evening, saw - but was ignored by - a good 10lb+ Rainbow. Up near Kimberley Reserve. Have a look, I think you'd have a bit of fun (outstanding new vineyard close by, too: Ohau Gravels, excellent wines). The river gets v low by March/April, in fact I have seen it almost dry. I live in the UK but get home to NZ almost every year. It must be the best fishing in the world, I'd say, especially when you consider how much good fishing is close to urban areas: cheap on petrol, fish after work in the summer. Amazing. Weird how people don't see what's under their noses.
+Cal The Kiwi Thanks as always for the feedback Cal, not so much any more the Akatarawa is pretty locked up by private landowners and lifestyle block owners now and access is difficult, especially exiting the river after a days fishing, yes Ohau years ago, but never did much good, so much better water in the vicinity. Currently fishing my way round the South Island, so stay tuned for some more clips! You're bang on about people not knowing what is available on their doorstep... they all rush to Taupo, even the two local fishing clubs do virtually NO trips locally! Cheers, Andrew
Hi Andrew. Shame about the Aka. Yip even though we have the Queen's Chain access - super precious, an utter Gift! - when the river narrows into gorge you're forced to turn back. Plus, as you say, walking out can be a drag. You're right, Ohau has good water near by- ie the Otaki River. Tight lines for the South Island. Doing La Fontaine? West Coast rivers further down? Rivers (several) around Gore, Mavora lakes? Lake Onslow nr Clutha Valley?? Cantab inland lakes? Paradise. We're spoilt. Autumn colour will be out, it's especially easy on the eye in Central Otago (and there's all that Pinot, too).
Looks like this might be a winner right in the middle of town, the girlfriend can go shopping I can go fishing. What are the best times of year to come to New Zealand?
Correct, this river runs through an urban environment, the river for a few miles is within walking distance of the shops! I like March / April myself, but Oct / Nov can also be very good. Cheers

Cheers Allan, glad you enjoyed it! Andrew
I like your concept of an urban river in nz :)
Ha, yeah I guess you're right there! Whilst urban, compared to other places round the globe it's probably quite wild! Regards, Andrew
