There is a useful ratio for arowana tanks. HxWxL = 1HX1.5Hx3H where H is height and equal to average adult size. Example an adult silver in tanks get to be 24 to 30 inches (bigger in pools). So the tank for it should be 24 inches high by 36 inches width and 72 inches long. This is bare minimum fir around 270 gallons (or 300 to include top clearance of around an inch).

Just wanted to say, as a current biology PhD candidate who loves animals and fish, I LOVE your channel. Thank you so much for spreading such well researched, *correct* care instructions, it’s awesome to see!
Just a few years ago I read a book about the Asian Arowana in the pet trade called "The Dragon Behind the Glass: A True Story of Power, Obsession, and the World’s Most Coveted Fish". These guys are so prized in certain cultures that people have been murdered to steal their collections and rare color morphs like the platinum sell for over $400,000 dollars. All this because in China they are believed to bring good luck and prosperity. Breeders of these fish guard their prize stock with guards armed with machine guns to prevent rival breeders from stealing or poisoning their fish. Because of this demand these fish are almost functionally extinct in the wild while thousands are bred in captivity to fit the growing demand for them. The journalist who wrote the book traveled through 15 countries in search of a wild Asian Arowana and when she finally managed to discover a wild population she refused to tell anyone where for fear of leading poachers to one of the last refuges of this elusive dragon.
The reason Asian arowana are endangered in the wild is habitat loss and being eaten by humans (which that book actually points out!): the pet trade in arowana became a thing BECAUSE of their rarity, not the other way around, which the book once again points out.
@10:10 Fighting fish (Antabantids) have a different method for surface air exchange. They have a Labrynth organ and do not use their swim bladders as lungs. Bichirs and gar make better examples
@@asrig3880 you’re right, he doesn’t create comprehensive care guides. I LOOOOVE MY AROWANA. WELL MY HUSBANDS. This is our second one. After moving the lids got broken so he did exactly that. Jumped out, unfortunately we didn't notice until it was too late. I love the new one though, he's a lot more active. Clint do a video on puffers! Great work
A couple years ago you did a video with Emily from snake discovery on 5 great pet snakes, where the Rosy Boa was mentioned. I think it would be great to have a video like this scoring this species.
If by "fighting fish" you mean bettas and their relatives, they do not have modified swim bladder "lungs". Anabantoids like bettas and gouramis breathe air using their labyrinth organs, located just rear of their skulls and adjacent to the gills. That means that air-breathing in fish has evolved independently at least twice, which I think is stinkin' rad.
I like how Clint's fish videos bring out all the aquarium nerds ;) Bettas are probably my favorite fish to keep, and they are very much like miniature arowanas. Both have that upwards shaped mouth and that grumpy attitude.
What a really good Video. I know you have already put Axolotls on the top five best amphibians but I would love to see them get there own video. Keep up the good work. You are one of my favorite Reptile UA-camrs!
I'm surprised you didn't put some emphasis on trying to differentiate the silvers from asian arowana, seeing as how the later is illegal to own in the US.
And let's not forget the Australian varieties of arowana too. The Jardiner being quite infamous for its aggression relative to its cousins. Nowhere near as desirable as Asian Arowanas, but also not as affordable as their South American peers (Black Arowanas being from same continent like the silvers.) Here in Canada, we have access to all of them and I've seen them up close. Silver Arowanas are a dime a dozen and relatively easy to find schools of young ones for sale. Australian varieties like Jardiner tend to be less common and command slightly higher prices, but you can still find them young. I've only ever seen adult Asian Arowanas where I live. They're crazy expensive, but just so beautiful. I've seen a huge tank that houses several adults of the red variety.
I remember looking forward to visiting a dentist family friend in my childhood. He had this large arowana that was roughly over 4 ft. Sadly it died when it wanted to munch on a fly and it jumped out of its tank and a shard of glass impaled its head.
Thank you! The silver arowana has been one of my dream fish since I was a kid. Even now, I'm saving up for a 400-gallon tank so that I can have my ideal freshwater predator setup. (Arowana, achara catfish, several large South American cichlids, a big common pleco, and maybe a bichir or freshwater eel.)
Hey Clint! Arowanas are cool but check out African Butterfly Fish. A LOT smaller and while not as active, looks pretty similar and is elaborately decorated with a lot of finnage. They can be put in as small as a 20 gallon long :)
you should change the title to silver arrowanna over just arrowanna as arrowanna care requirements and other things can change depending on the type of arrowanna
I think the best aquarium pet are the dwarf shrimps. They come in a variety of colors, are compatible with aquascaping and nano tanks (very trendy now), and don't harm plants or tank mates.
You are totally RAD Clint! I am a HUGE fan of your channel! after I watched your channel and snake discovery, I forced my parents to get me a leopard gecko! he is only 8 months old!
WOOHOO ANOTHER FISH! thanks Clint! IMO for me the best pet fish, is gourami :) they’re cute, they’re hardy, they’re pretty, they are intelligent, can breathe air directly so no need to panic if power is off, and they are so funny when they use their feeler fins to probe their surrounding (including our hand)
Can I just suggest that the Plakat Betta (Betta splendens the "Fighting" fish) is essentially a tiny Arowana? The Betta with the long fins are slow (because of the huge finage we bred into them) but the short finned Plakat acts very much like an Arowana, only you can keep them (happily) in a five gallon tank, though more is almost always better when it comes to space and fish. Oh, you mentioned obligate air breathers, the Betta is one of them! You can't ship them in "breather" bags without air space or they will drown.
As I’m sure you’re aware, there’s multiple species of arowana that are accessible in the pet trade. It appears you’re speaking specifically about the silver so you might consider mentioning that in the title. Great video!
I use to have a baby arowana in an aquarium with some neon tetras. I didn’t know how voracious a feeder the arowana was until one day all my tetras had gone missing. Unfortunately when I was gone to school he made a leap out of the tank and I found him dead when I got home. Now I have an African lungfish, I have to keep that tank battened down to or he will slide out as well.
I love these guys, remember first seeing these 15 years or so ago in a fish magazine. Someday, I will have a pond, then I will be torn between these and Koi.
This overall was a pretty good video, however I do have some complaints: 1) Clint didn't mention that there are several different species of arowana , each of them growing a different size. 2) For a silver arowana, as shown in the video, the recommended tank size of 200 gallons is too small, due to the fact that they get around 4ft in length, being the largest arowana. 3) It also should be mentioned that feeding feeders fish is not a good idea, due to the fact that feeder fish are kept in very poor conditions, which lead to them being diseased.
Purchased a 210G acrylic with 4 large canister filters...tank has built in lids and a wood canopy. Hopefully it is enough to contain a silver aro...will probably end up also taping up or something the cracks between canister tubes. Ive heard of many people's aro escaping through the small slits in the back of acrylic tanks for filters. This tank wont even be large enough for the aro for life if it manages to stay in the tank long enough to get over 30"...would then need to upgrade to something like a 300G wide.
Love the fish videos! Would like to see the dojo loach. I kept 6, now 5 after one jumped out. 2 wild types, 2 albino (one jumper), and 2 juvi wild types. I keep them in a 125 cool water tank (around 70f). They're currently with a false synodontis and a green terror. I love how derpy they are. They also fit into the "air breather" category that you seem to be covering, so I think they would be a good fit for the channel.
I love your channel! I wish this was around back when i got my first reptile Bree my old green iguana! My next Buddy i get will be a Kenyan sand boa after watching your sand boa video!! I’ll be sure to name him Clint after ya!
Quite funny how my dream pet gets a low score and I 100% agree with it. Arowana’s are extremely hard to keep, but they are some of the most beautiful animals alive in the opinion of someone with a fish obsession
I've several , they are hard to grow . I've had them from egg sack on. I even have had a black arrawonna with a yellow stripe. I've also had them jump out as well. They so breathe air and swim often. They grow slow and die easy.
I’d love to see a phylogeny of bony fish, especially focusing on whether fish with lungs are monophyletic. Are catfish the closest living relatives of lobe finned fish?
The ariwana needs alot more space than most people can give them there is a better but similar option The african butterfly fish is basically a more reasonably sized jumping fish they only get about 5-6 inches maximum you just have to feed them alot of live feeders they don't like flake food
or, if you would like a more reasonable eel like option, the reed/ropefish! they ALSO have lungs and only get at about a foot. they love to be in multiples, often seen tangling up in each other. they can eat worms, insects, and algae wafers! i dont own them, but i hope to very very soon!
Did you just say this fish weights 10lbs? Clint can you put something next to this fish to give us a visual of how big it is? Until you said it was very big it looked little. 🤔
Great video, it was so much fun. :) Yes, yes ,yes....go to Oz, film a video about great whites (don't get eaten) We also need several films about Australia zoo.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how unapologetic Clint is when he is explaining surprising things people don't typically understand about Cladistics. This particular upright Bony Fish-Monkey appreciates a firm grasp of evolutionary biology!!!
My husband and I watch and enjoy all of the videos. An idea for a future video we would like to see is for Rhinoclemmys pulcherrima manni the Central American ornate wood turtle.
Not gonna lie. I was a little dissapointed that you covered the silver arowana and not the asian arowana. The asian arowana is my dream fish, and hoped I could've learned a little bit more about it. Nonsense great way and great footage. Good job man^^
Clint keeps saying they’re massive fish, but when that happens I hear lots of people not understanding just how big. 4ft big. Silver arowana can get 4 goddamn feet, usually staying around 3. Hundreds to thousands of gallons are needed. If you search “massive silver arowana” on UA-cam you can see some 4 footers
If available, the related Australian Saratoga (Scleropages jardini and leichardti) are similar looking fist but (ever so slightly) more sedate in temperment. Still big-ass predatory fish that can jump like mad, but a little less flighty.
You should totally do the Great White if you can. But if not, maybe piranhas? I’ve heard mixed things about keeping them lol. I don’t keep fish personally (yet?) but I’d love to see your review!
They are not very aggressive compared to others in fresh water. I've had snake.heads in with the.. they are cool bit none of the several I've had over the years ... never had one grow past 6 or 7 inches from egg sack.size

Oh, you mentioned obligate air breathers, the Betta is one of them! You can't ship them in "breather" bags without air space or they will drown.
You should mention specific data like needed temps and required tank for adults.
As I’m sure you’re aware, there’s multiple species of arowana that are accessible in the pet trade. It appears you’re speaking specifically about the silver so you might consider mentioning that in the title. Great video!
This video was so helpful thank you!!!
Ahhhh I see we’re taking a look at fish now!!... I like it!
I love these guys, remember first seeing these 15 years or so ago in a fish magazine. Someday, I will have a pond, then I will be torn between these and Koi.
This overall was a pretty good video, however I do have some complaints:
1) Clint didn't mention that there are several different species of arowana , each of them growing a different size.
2) For a silver arowana, as shown in the video, the recommended tank size of 200 gallons is too small, due to the fact that they get around 4ft in length, being the largest arowana.
3) It also should be mentioned that feeding feeders fish is not a good idea, due to the fact that feeder fish are kept in very poor conditions, which lead to them being diseased.
also, that silver arowana was a baby....i have seen much much bigger arowana in fish shops near me
Purchased a 210G acrylic with 4 large canister filters...tank has built in lids and a wood canopy.
Another stellar upload just in time to tide me over while waiting for “Octopus, The Best Pet Cephalopod?” 😁😁😁
You'd maybe be amazed by how used fish can get to being touched.
I certainly had fish that seemed to enjoy that sensation even.
Hello great video information Clint
I've several , they are hard to grow . I've had them from egg sack on. I even have had a black arrawonna with a yellow stripe.
I've also had them jump out as well. They so breathe air and swim often. They grow slow and die easy.
Great video! I always admire the ties you wear. Very fashionable.
I’d love to see a phylogeny of bony fish, especially focusing on whether fish with lungs are monophyletic. Are catfish the closest living relatives of lobe finned fish?
This was a great Clint video about a cool fish, like this.
Cause Clint is very cool and awesome.
Can you do discus? And some other fish please.
a local store has a few of these, it lets lots of people pet it.
Did you just say this fish weights 10lbs? Clint can you put something next to this fish to give us a visual of how big it is? Until you said it was very big it looked little. 🤔
Clint! If you come here to Australia come see our penguins in Melbourne!!
You're the absolute best pet fish Clint!
Great video, it was so much fun. :) Yes, yes ,yes....go to Oz, film a video about great whites (don't get eaten) We also need several films about Australia zoo.
Yes, please!
I'd also love to hear your take on polypteridae
Bro I love these more fish/ocean ones!! My DREAMM!!!
You should review the Mbu puffer. You probably have heard of Murphy the Mbu puffer owned by Cory from Co-Op Aquarium. Just a thought lol!
Honestly I'm really enjoying these fish videos :)
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how unapologetic Clint is when he is explaining surprising things people don't typically understand about Cladistics.
This particular upright Bony Fish-Monkey appreciates a firm grasp of evolutionary biology!!!
I felt like a fifth grader in mentally gifted class again, I could exhale and turn my brain back on
Can you do ornamental koi? I’m genuinely curious to see how they compare to arowana.
My husband and I watch and enjoy all of the videos. An idea for a future video we would like to see is for Rhinoclemmys pulcherrima manni the Central American ornate wood turtle.
Please review the Oscar Fish, what I consider to be the best pet fish period
Not gonna lie. I was a little dissapointed that you covered the silver arowana and not the asian arowana. The asian arowana is my dream fish, and hoped I could've learned a little bit more about it. Nonsense great way and great footage. Good job man^^
You should do a shield nosed cobra video cause I just discovered them and they're stinkin' adorable.
Will you eventually do a segment on eels (I know there are a lot to choose from, so maybe a top list?)?
I would love to see a video about Mudskippers!
You should do a video with "The King of DIY"
If Clint could go on his podcast, that'd be rad.
Do one on large mouth bass they are great if your tanks big enough
A great white shark video would be phenomenal!
They're larger than most children.
I love arowana, they are so beautiful! And outside of betta fish, are my favorite.
Oh and brazilian jewel spiders maybe? They're soo pretty 😍
Yeaaasss....more fish videos please
They are not very aggressive compared to others in fresh water. I've had snake.heads in with the.. they are cool bit none of the several I've had over the years ... never had one grow past 6 or 7 inches from egg sack.size
