What Is Kilt Rise? Do You Need a Custom Rise Measurement on a Custom Kilt?

  • A Traditional kilt is worn higher than your pants, just above the belly button (just above the WIDEST part of your belly if you carry some weight). This is where the top of the kilt will sit. The measurement from the waist straps to the top edge of the kilt is called the Rise. It's not a measurement we as a company ask for from our customers. Why? Because the rise is usually a mathematical factor. Most kilt makers use a standard measurement. Why do we? What makes a proper rise on a traditional kilt? Should the rise be custom to each person? Does the rise have anything to do with how the kilt fits or where it falls on the body?

I agree with you it sounds like the maker did not make it correct. Thank you for making such good quality kilts and selling them and quality accessories.

I've been asked for NO raise (band kilt). The reason being, it was a woman's kilt and she didn't want the top to be 'right up under the girls'. If this dude's kilt isn't fitting right, just tighten it up a bit. If the straps need more holes, or if the buckles need to be moved, get busy! Just make sure to go through all the layers if they're moving buckles. Just my 2 cents worth . . .

+USAKiltsOfficial *The actual rise from hip circumference to waist circumference (e.g. for a typical kilt) should be 1/16 the overall height o' the person.* The straps for securing the kilt should be two inches from the waistband for the top, and on or about four inches betwixt top and bottom straps.

This is clearly a case of someone overthing it.
