Love your thought process Rocky, I wish more company’s were willing to hire people and teach them their process. Too many companies concentrate on looking for experienced workers but then you end up with several individual processes that do not work for the collective.

I admire your commitment to quality. I am also a long time fan of your videos and have learned a lot about Highland wear from you over the last two years. It has got to the point that I often Help people who have questions about it and all I have to do is go out and be seen in my kilt. #1; I point them in your direction. Both to have a kilt made, and to watch your UA-cam videos. I especially like "the first time kilter." Getting them over that initial barrier is an experience well worth witnessing. I have even gone to length of going out to an Irish bar in Dublin, Ohio with some first time kilters to provide moral support just to get them over that paper clip of a barrier. Once they got over themselves and just did it, and experienced the attention, (especially from the Ladies), they were hooked! And we got to be a hit with the patrons and the bar staff every time we go. We have literally become something of an attraction. I hand out my cards and answer many questions. Where are my bagpipes? Under me kilt! How do I feel about croquet'? T'is a fine game, if ye've got the balls fer it! I have even sung "The Scotsman" song on a couple of occasions. Also I am able to help people find their Scottish Clan Because I do the clan research that I do I can provide them with that information showing them their connection to their Scottish Clan either directly (by name) or even if it is a "Sept" connection (by Marriage or a protected family by decent). My favorite part is seeing the realization that dawns on their face when they make that connection for themselves, that in it'self is well worth all the work. They Immediately want to get themselves outfitted! That is where you Guys come in, (Enter; USA Kilts). You guys are the inspiration and form a large part of all I have done so far and like you, I take great pride in my work as well. I wish you guys had a store out here in Columbus, Ohio. It would be interesting to see how many kilts would be worn publicly throughout the City and the Greater Central Ohio Area if it ever came to pass. Ah well, it's a fantasy of mine. Keep up the Great work Guys and KEEP ON ROCKIN' !!!

After talking with Mac at the party, it was apparent that USAK are not "slaves to the process", but rather continuously open to innovation and improvement. With the addition of some new sewers(?), the "training tracks" of each are being "customized" (if I understood correctly) to enhance overall production efficiency across the catalog. Put simply, it's clear that Rocky & Mac are always looking for ways to make things better.

I had my first kilt bought for me for my 21st birthday. Although it's also been worn by my brother and cousin......it's gladly now back with me. It was made by ALD kilts in Clydebank, Scotland in 1988 in ancient Murray. It's so small in the waist my 15 year old son has already grown past it(yes he's big and I'm a hobbit). I've had two further kilts made since then, another from ALD Kilts and an independent kilt maker in Dingwall, Rosshire. The quality of all of these kilts is stunning. As I watch more videos and read books on tayloring a kilt....I've developed a hankering to learn to make a kilt myself. I have never sowed. I'm a Civil Engineer, so logic and fitting are built into my brain wiring. If you have a dream, chase it wae both hands as fast as yer wee leggies will carry you. It's either Edinburgh kilt academy or A lovely woman from Strathearn in Perth. I love your videos, keep them coming.

6:27 I do believe one of the major things that sets USA Kilts apart is Rocky's OCD, engineering brain. It's all about those pleats! And I love that the craft is being spread.

    Barb’s book is great...
Wow I’m not alone.... I did the exact same thing... as a gig piper I need a kilt without having to commit to a band, and I just decided after buying one a long time ago that it was time to learn... I’m still not a kilt maker...but I’m on #4..😕

Thank you! I recieved my kilt made by Jamie. Love the kilt the sporan the flashes and hose. Burns night and the highlands games ill look magnificent. My apron has a checker pattern but the back is striped. The vertical colors hide in the pleats. Beautiful.

I've watched you two here on UA-cam for good many of years and I love hearing you talk about kilts. How they're made Etc.
But if you want to know the truth to the matter, You two are the Comic Duo's if you will of kilts, and in retrospect.
The two of you, are the Penn & teller's of kilts, because I love the way you discuss things and I love your humor.
And the next video you do you can tell people I said so

I should learn to make kilts.
My great grandmother was a kilt maker, my biggest regret to this day is not having one she made.
She was with us until I was done highschool.

Hey guys, have a good question for you and your next video. There are a lot of videos out there that show people how to pleat, and do the wraparound kilts. Have you ever shown people the proper way, and the precise way of making a pleated wrap around Kilt. I know how it's done but there's a lot of people out there that would really like to know and some of the instruction videos they do more talking than they do demonstrating how it's done. Food For Thought for one of your next videos thank you

I have heard about the process by which the pleats across the back of a kilt are scalloped out and the back is rebuilt with a canvas liner. I don’t know that I fully understand why this is done and what advantage it has in creating the final product. I have been thinking and examining the kilts that I currently own and think that there is a way to build a kilt that does not involve reconstructing the “haunch” and does not require cutting and sewing a hole for the left hip strap and also preserves the original fabric in a way that resizing the entire garment remains possible. The only outward difference I imagine is the visual loss of a strap that is hidden under a belt.

If I understand your question correctly regarding the scalloped cutouts on the back I take it you are talking about the material at the waist . The material is removed to reduce the thickness of the waist band . I don't think this is needed on a four yard kilt . The canvas liner is to add structural integratory to the waist and take stress off of the stitching . It also smooths the waist area to reduce drag on the folds on the inside of the waist . I am not a kiltmaker so anyone chime in if I have gotten anything wrong .

This was an interesting video and a brilliant question to fire it off. I have a question, do you have Inverness capes in America? I am not a bandsman but I have one because I didn't want to wear an anorak or a normal raincoat whilst I'm wearing my kilt. I cut the bag strap out of it to make it so that I won't catch my arm in the strap but as that was in the inside of the top piece you wouldn't notice.
I am a Scot that lives in London (spits) wher I went for work but as I'm retired it's only expense that prevents me from going home.
Oh btw in Black's Colin is listed as the 17th most popular first name and Paterson the 19th surname in Scotland so on average I am 18.
