      The blurb:
*US Army* Redefining Army innovation with technology and research to solve global challenges.

"The world is changing rapidly, as is America’s Army. In close partnership with industry, the Army continues to innovate and invest in emerging technologies while testing and developing pathways in new areas, such as artificial intelligence, and contested domains, such as space, cyber and logistics. My take as an Austin, TX native: SXSW has gotten too big and too corporate to be good anymore. Like most successful community-loved things tend to do over time (looking at you, Texas Renaissance Festival), it's strayed from it's original path and has been doing so for YEARS as popularity grew and more big-name sponsors started rolling in with conditions to accompany their money. TLDR: Greed and capitalism ruined another fun thing for us peasants lol.

@tlowery2074 as another austinite, I can definitely speak to the traffic situation. Our downtown is chaotic and not built for the volume of traffic it has. However, they will block off entire blocks of downtown near parking garages so that people can park there and get a bus ride to the event. I didn't really understand how bad it was until I started going to ACL, but I seriously think they need to have it somewhere that isn't Zilker park. It just isn't practical anymore.

Also an Austin native, I went with my dad and brothers in 2014 (I was 9), and it had some cool things, since VR/AR was coming into its nascency. We got some lights sticks, and some make it yourself slime putty. We walked past a few concert venues. But overall I don’t think it was that much better than what I’ve seen since passing by. I’d rather have Austin be on a tour schedule than see my favorite bands at a weird time of day, with terrible transportation options and pricing.
I went on a school trip in 2022 to listen to a couple of seminars to hear from student journalists. That was it tho.

    • @Shadeadder
      @Shadeadder 2 місяці тому +8

Also an Austin native, and I wholeheartedly agree. The exact same problem is occurring with ACL because the city sees it increasing expansion every year as just another way to line the coffers, rather than considering the effect it has on the locals they're supposed to be prioritizing.

Something to note about the military supersponsorship - I wouldn’t be surprised if the military was pretty involved and just asked not to have their sponsorship loudly advertised, because it’s not uncommon for that to be how it goes with military or government involvement in general with things like that. They probably just wanted more sway over what was happening internally with the festival, and quite frankly the military has enough funding that it can afford to put a lot of money towards something without a whole lot of payout.

Amazing for indi creators. I also was working with a production company so I went to the film festival part, even I couldn't get into a lot and I was WORKING. I feel like shortening SXSW from 2 weeks to 1 was the main start of the downfall. It was a lot more balanced when they had one week for entertainment and one for tech. The events were more specialized and spread out so an attendee could see more. Also, one thing casual attendees or observers might not see, is that there are a ton of private, invitation only events happening throughout the conference, and those are often the more fun/interesting events than the open events

I’ve genuinely been on the fence about a lot of these conferences I definitely appreciate what they present as opportunities and some of the things these festivals do for a community. I’d love to hear more from the ppl of Austin and how they feel now about the event. Thanks for your video gives me a lot to think about.

As an Austinite I am so nervous to watch this. Like, I complain about what SXSW has become, and a lot of other things that have changed in the past 20+ years, but an outsider giving anything less than a glowing review of my hometown may get my hackles up.

I used to love sxsw. It was a huge opportunity for college students to volunteer to earn a platinum badge and get into any shows and events they wanted. The entire city of Austin felt like one large festival and there were so many unofficial events. I went to a show with the PA system hosted in a bus in the back parking lot of the Wendy’s on 7th st. People from all around the world would come and play shows big and small and I’ve made friends for years because of it. It’s far too large for its own good now and somehow still not “profitable” - quoted from a friend who used to work for them. Its primary focus now is advertising space and web3 promo. So sad, it’s far too large, confusing, and difficult to attend. I live in Austin and still love the city but this festival used to be a fun cultural exchange and now it’s shifted so much. Glad you got the chance to attend, sorry it could have been better. 😩

I volunteered for SXSW back in 2014! Had a good time, learned a lot, met a ton of other enthusiastic volunteers. Sad to hear the rumors about the festival (and as Austin as a whole, as I no longer live there) are true. Not to sound like a hipster, but its unfortunate that such a forward place could become so... square.

Holy cow, those panels sound bizarre! I’m not sure why, but as someone who doesn’t take sponsorships, I feel oddly insulted by the implication that it’s impossible. It’s not fun for sure, and I may need to accept a sponsorship eventually if times get super rough, but I’ve managed this far by rotating between two other jobs. I’ve worked hard to be able to keep sponsorships out of my content, y’know? So I guess the suggestion that creators like me don’t exist makes me a bit cross

I used to just go SXSW for the free shows. They’re all over town! Just venue hopping and would see a town of artist before they blew up. This was around 2014-2017 though. Things are different now but I don’t pay for ish. The real fun part is exploring the city and seeing what venues are doing what since the whole town is venues. The tickets where always expensive and never made sense to me because it doesn’t necessarily encompass everything going on during the fest since it’s the whole city kind of doin g their own thing. It’s a mess even for locals tbh. If it weren’t for living in the area I wouldn’t go unless I’m getting paid too

I don’t know anyone who lives in Austin that attends sxsw outside of maybe a few band’s shows. It has long since fallen out of favor with the locals, I had a two mile commute from downtown to my apartment that took literally over an hour because the influx of people put traffic at a complete standstill, the tourists don’t tip at sit-down restaurants, not to mention that one Peso Pluma show that had people waiting in line for 8 hours to get denied entry due to capacity anyways. Everyone who lives here dreads the second and third weeks of March lol.

  • @gaerekxenos

Inexperienced panelists -- how am I not surprised? I'd probably look into how they decide who gets to be on panels, whether people sign up for them or if they were invited or if there is a specific call for certain types of panelists with an entire self-promotion spiel for qualifications and what type of compensation there is for panelists. I know there were some panels for Fanime that are just fanmade content (because that's just the type of convention it is), so it's a giant mixed bag for all of it with idk what type of screening they do in preparation. I don't even know if they check if they have a script or outline, or do knowledge/information checks with these people
That listing of city on the badge is a huge YIKES indeed. They really need an opt out for having cities listed. I can see where it'd be nice for when making connections as regular people, but it's also... yikes >
