the amount of times ive heard people talk about how they hope something becomes trendy so they can have that style, and im just like, why does it need to be trendy for you to do it?? why dont you just live the way that makes you happy regardless of whats "trendy"????
i think a lot of it is accessibility! like of course wear what you want and what makes you happy regardless of if it's trendy or not, but some times clothes just aren't available that fit into a certain niche until that niche becomes trendy-that is unless you have the time and ability to sift through the racks at a thrift store for the perfect piece or the money to shop at less mainstream stores that cater to what you're looking for. Like when I was in middle and early high school you could not find a pair of high waisted or even mid rise jeans at regular stores to save your life and then it switched and you couldn't find ANY low rise jeans anywhere. We killed them, but now they've risen from the grave. You just have to wait for something to become available so you can buy it and hold onto it while it fits into your personal style, and this is especially hard for young people who don't have many pieces to fall back on when what they like isn't on trend any longer because they simply haven't lived long enough to accumulate things like that. I hope this makes sense!
When I was young I had oppositional defiant disorder so I would purposely wait till things were not trendy anymore before I could do it because I had to be "different" lmao..Even though that's pretty cringy now I'm still happy that I always did my own thing at the end of the day.

I recently went to the theater and there was a woman dressed up in Victorian middleclass formal wear and ... honestly kudos to her. Also, it was one of the single digit weather days and it looked warm and toasty as all get out.

People talk about accessibility, its a person on the internet. I hate shein but it still exists. Hell, thrift stores have been ruined by people reselling clothes. No one with the time to make content is also in a position where they can't also find the clothes they want.
Thats not the reason content creators wish for certain things to be trendy. They say it because they're self conscious about stuff they want to do.

Everyone looks good with dark hair! If you want to experiment but don’t want to dye your hair you should pick up a wig. Just a warning: they can get addictive to the point that wigs are just another accessory in my wardrobe

It's probably because of the issue Swell brought up in the beginning about media calling everything a trend but its just one video mentioning/about this "trend". I don't really see pop culture articles so I don't see these things until Swell talks about it
one thing that also helped me discover my personal style was just making a Pinterest board, collecting as many images of outfits I could see myself wearing as I could, and then looking for the pieces they had in common. I already had a lot of stuff I could begin to utilize better, but I also ended up purchasing a pair of oxfords and a few waistcoats that I’m now obsessed with and wear frequently. I’m very visual, so stepping back from labels (dark academia, techwear, etc) and focusing on the actual clothes themselves helped me figure out what I liked.

As someone who was in high school in the late 00s-early 10s, I have so many graphic tees in my closet that I don't wear anymore. I've been reluctant to get rid of them cause of environmental concerns and many of them were gifts. My closet is overstuffed with items I've had for decades. It made me feel guilty for buying new clothes now that I've figured out what I like and what I feel comfortable in.
But a couple months ago I had an epiphany, I can turn my old t-shirts into a quilt! So that's one of goals this year. It will feel good to make some room in my closet and also not feel like I'm contributing to clothing waste.
Any random scraps can be cut up further and be used to stuff a hand -made teddy bear :)

Yessss! I use my clothing I don’t wear anymore to make new things. I also always let my friends know they are welcome to my clothing, I also do cosplay and I always start in my closet.
I have a similar question regarding what to do with my old t-shirts. Not because I don't wear them anymore, but because I wear them so much they are actually approaching the end of their life. I'm attached to them though, so I don't really want to throw them out.
I'm thinking my solution is going to be turning them into yarn and knitting with them.
You can also cut them up so you can use them for rag curls if yiu qant to ha w vintage vibes!
The only thing the current fashion landscape has done for me was make me feel like I can do whatever I want. I can dress as a wizard and I will! Make my own wizard robes and buy 2-3 items a year that really speak to me. It’s great

i’ve been seeing a huge spike of sopranos memes since 2021 (which is what ultimately lead to me watching the entire show). i think it was just a lot of people at home, watching (or rewatching) older shows, so it came back into the zeitgeist. i agree with you, that this wasn’t/isn’t an intentional marketing thing, it just happened to coincide with the anniversary.
also, it’s probably a flip on the minimalist/clean girl trends that a lot of people are tired of lol.
The Many Saints of Newark which was a prequel to the sopranos also came out in 2021. I think the proof that Warner Brothers/HBO's marketing team is not smart enough to pull this is the fact that there was already a recent series that apparently no one remembers 😬

I work in marketing and there is absolutely no way you’d be able to get stakeholder buy in on creating an aesthetic to promote a TV show. The concept would be too foreign and there’s little to no way to track performance. I totally understand why people think it’s a calculated campaign but lololol.

I’m in my early twenties and don’t use TikTok because the algorithm just isn’t good for me, so I very much appreciate these deep dives to keep me up to date on the latest trends!
what non-corporate people don't understand- is even getting marketing initiatives off the ground, takes so long due to how many checks, balances, and compliance reviews have to be done for due diligence by multiple parties - these things take at minimum weeks of research, planning, creation, review, and execution. agree that if it was a ton of influencers suddenly pushing this "aesthetic" then it would be a lot less subtle and more apparent- hell it would need to actually be disclosed if they were purposefully advertising for the sopranos.
One trend that really stuck with me was Whimsigoth. It was popular like 2 years ago. I don’t follow most trends cause there’s too many to even keep track of, but I had been looking for a style for a while because I also never really got to experiment growing up. But now that I’m older and making more money I can invest in some really cool pieces that fit the kind of aesthetic I’m looking for

I had this exact discussion with my textile art students this morning. One of them said "But at some point there's holes in clothes and you can't wear them anymore " and that's not the issue. You actually need clothes? Buy them! I let my transitioning partner figure out her style without even mentioning sweatshops and fast fashion; she needs to find who she is through her style as a woman. But I don't trust anyone who hops on a trend the moment it becomes the thing of the week. We're WAY past letting people live. Your fashion impulsivity is infringing on human rights at this point because what thrift shops don't sell end up polluting developing countries cause we don't wanna face the harm of capitalism. I've had enough, as a lover of fashion and textiles, the industry is driving me insane 😤 This isn't fashion, it's disrespectful.
I won't pretend that 'trendy' things(clothes, accessories, etc) have never ever appealed to me, but I have never felt the need to keep up with them because it honestly seems so exhausting? I just wear what I like and I'm happy with that. But then I also found the Goth aesthetic and subculture when I was a teen so I've always dressed more alternatively, and while there are still trends, there's also so much more emphasis on being yourself and having your own style within the aesthetic and tbh it's so freeing to not care about what's currently socially popular. Like all fads and trends go out of style at some point, there's nothing wrong with happening to like one but getting rid of it just because it's not 'cool' anymore? Baffling. I still have my Converse from 20+ years ago because they're still good to wear.

I understand trends are a thing and being a teen is trying to find yourself and all but i also think it's insane that young women feel the need to cultivate their personality and tastes around something as simple as just an aesthetic. I don't want to sound old (i'm 27) but barely 10 years ago trends were based on more "larger" things. there was the hunger games/divergent dystopian ya trend, and before there was twilight and before that i was 10 years old and i didn't have much to say about style. And seeing all the preteen girls entering sephora and all the teens jumping from one aesthetic to the other i feel like it's taking away from their childhood.
You're supposed to be comfortable, to have fun when you're a kid. not to be pretty. not to have the perfect skin.
Like yes, we were still bombarded with the need to be beautiful, but it was mostly on tv. and if you were lucky enough to spend a few days without turning it on it kinda became an afterthought. And all these trends are mind consuming and become obsessions over time. I am really worried for this next genarations growing up on tiktok because you can have the best family, friends and support system in the world but if for some reason your brain doesn't ever feel fulfilled untill you got onto the new trend then they're going to become very unhappy people.

I'm 29 and 100% agree with you. I feel genuinely bad for a lot of the 21-22 and under crowd. The shift in society and how preteens/teens/younger adults are being forced to grow up hurts my heart. I work with a lot of people under 25 and what they have to deal with just to find who they are is ridiculous.
I really hope something happens to TikTok that drastically reduces its reach and hold on developing brains. It's not fair to these kids and young adults.
37 and I have to be honest I feel like it was worse 20 years ago. Everyone had a bad tan and an eating disorder for the *aesthetic*. At least there's far more variety and it's always been normal for kids to try out different things. The consumerism is bad but it's the same machine that's always been churning, grinding up the self esteem of girls.

Having worked with 'The Industry' for a hot minute ~ these people barely even know the specs of the current project that they're working on, honestly you're lucky if they do know even half of what's going on and what they need you to do for it. The idea that they would be able to pre-plan and orchestrate something as subtle as a plant tik-toker trend is hilarious to me when I've spent literal days just trying to get basic answers from people who get paid way too much money to apparently not know how half the things they're supposed to ~ mbut they got the job because they're a friend of a cousin or whatever and so even though they don't know their ass from their head you still have to work with them because there's no way they're getting fired before you, so suck it up buttercup and figure it out! That's the attitude of 'the industry' - not this machiavellian, several months in advance scheming nonsense. People think the world is like the movies but it's so clearly not the older you get, and honestly it's a little terrifying.
As a 37 yr old millennial with no kids, I've looked like a soccer mom for 20+ years and I'm ok with it. Clean girl worked for me with plain hair and kind of plain clothes, but I could totally get into mob wife for makeup lol. I think that's the key for trends (if you're aware of and comfortable with your own style), picking the parts of trends that mesh well with what you're already doing and ignoring what doesn't.

The one that focuses on deep family drama with emphasis on toxic masculinity and how that effects their loved ones? It's because of the Sopranos. The Sopranos, like it or not, was massively influential in media and culture. You cannot escape it.
Also, I feel like "mafia wife" becoming a thing was inevitable since booktok is so obsessed with dark romance. You brought up the "stop writing mafia aus" tweet, but it's real that mafia and mob boss trappings have been popular for a hot minute. the tiktok girlies love to flirt with danger and to submerse themselves in those trappings. this really was inevitable.

Honestly I shop for clothes about once a year and every time I'm tired just thinking about it. I like fashion design, and aesthetics, and the craft of textile, but everything about the actual trends and constant consumerist push is so, so exhausting.

As a vet student, I’m not excited for furs to be back in trend. There’s limited “vintage furs” available and people are going to just buy new ones and feed into the horrible fur trade. The fur trade (raising mink and fox for just their furs) is totally unsustainable and bad for their health as the animals are extremely obese (to have more fur) and the rest of their body isn’t utilized.

I never knew that was the context and I find that interesting because afaik the lyrics are referencing the game Mafia, not the actual mafia. Idk if the mv stuck out to me as being particularly inspired by the mafia "aesthetic" but I'd have to rewatch it and see.
Edit: I rewatched it and the mv seems to be inspired by heist films? And heist films sometimes have mafia storylines. I empathize with what that exo fan was saying (seeing other people romanticizing a crime organization can sting if people in your family had run-ins with said crime organization), I think I just saw more of the heist movie connection or the references to the game than a connection to depictions of the mafia and so it didn't really occur to me that they were using the mafia as an aesthetic.

I mean they make the little finger guns in the main chorus choreo. I mean I get what ur coming from but from what ive seen the majority of people took it at face value as a mafia theme not as the game like you've done here.

aesthetic trends as a form of social capital is a really interesting point. trying to get people to divest from that and pour time and effort into their own personal expression is hard though because it really doesnt adress that desire for the social aspects

As a 44 yo Male, I've bounced around style wise quite a bit my whole life, at the end of the day there are two things I've learned, 1.wear what makes you feel like you, and 2. don't wear anything that makes you not feel like you.
the concept of "clothing that makes you feel like yourself" absolutely fascinates me - we all know what it means, and many of us who pretend to be above such concerns still seem to show extreme discomfort when faced with a marked change in visibility or perceived class or gender signifiers. cis people are so weird lol

it is a huge spectrum of course, lots of people don't care i'm sure, but I do genuinely think people are sensitive to presenting the wrong thing in their clothing that is more subtle than just being the wrong gender, or the way women are expected to dress specifically for every occasion in a way that men aren't. we have a load of job and gender stereotypes in our head and we often conform to them rigidly - everyone knows what a farmer looks like, but why?

I fully get the 'finding your style as an adult', I'm 28 and in the middle of it and ive figured out that I have 2 styles that make me personally feel amazing. They are Butch Bogan Nerd, and High Femme Alt Mommy
the only time i dressed according to trends was when alternative fashion got popular during the most isolating time of the pandemic but i haven’t found any other style i enjoyed. i dress goth now, and ppl keep wishing for trends to come back so they can wear them and it drives me crazy bcus nothing is stopping you?? please just wear what makes you happy !!!!!

One good thing about trends is you can find niche accounts that have been doing that thing for years! That’s how i found about alt fashion creators and I still follow them when the main trend cycle is gone cause they only post abt alt fashion!!!
What I love about my fashion sense recently is that I have noticed a definite shift from “oh, I see a color on a shirt in the store, I didn’t realize I liked this color and want to try it out” to “nice, I just figured out that this pastel lavender is a good color on me, I’m glad it’s trendy rn, I can buy a bunch of pieces I will keep for a long time.” idk what say, but it’s less reactive and more long term focused. I find that my wardrobe is more me and less a magazine :)))

i only hear about tiktok from videos like yours and i swear every time i hear someone go off about it, giving advice or speaking out about an issue that feels too obvious to be real, i'm increasingly convinced tiktok is just making people forget how to be people. the hermeneutic leap required to even understand the necessity of explaining to someone that they are allowed to keep an item of clothing they like and indeed have enough individuality to have opinions and preferences is truly horrifying.
I think a lot of people get too focused on fast fashion being THE issue when it is AN issue, which also ties into decreased time between trend cycles, ready access to social media where they’re pushed, the need to “fit in,” societal pressures, giant haul influencers, lack of affordability/expendable income, consumerism as a whole, etc as contributing factors. Telling people to stop buying from fast fashion brands isn’t going to instantly fix the problem.
I personally love seeing people doing whatever makes their little fashion hearts happy

That video explaining that an entire aesthetic can be suddenly "out" really helps me understand why every woman I have dated has 10x the number of clothes I do; I am still wearing the same clothes I wore in college because men are not allowed to know about aesthetics

Yes to all of this!! Attaching yourself to a certain trend/aesthetic can be SO limiting, and it's a losing battle. I've also only started figuring out my style a few for a few years, and i've realized that there's not one aesthetic that can fully encapsulate my personality/looks/etc. I like some elements of "grunge", some "dark academia" things, etc. And like u said, you can just use them for inspo and pick the things thay you *genuinely* like, figuring things out as you go.
If I'm not wearing my work uniform, I look feral. My outfits tend to lean towards witchy, fantasy gay pirate (ofmd), train conductor thing going on. It's pretty random tbh. I also have a cloak that I made for myself. I use it a lot in winter.
The thing about trendification on tiktok is that it also gives video essayists guaranteed hit topics to talk about, if the 500 videos about stanley cups and sephora kids are any indication.

Someone mentioned to me a few days ago that my outfit perfectly fit into the "mob wife" aesthetic that was poppin on tiktok rn, but i don't use tiktok so i had no idea i just like to wear rhinestones and vintage pins and i bought a few faux fur coats a few years ago because i liked how fluffy they were. Also this is so random but im kind of shocked she said she's only 26. She's actually a little younger than me, but she gives strong 35 energy; not her looks, just her vibes and style.
Shopping secondhand has actually helped me find my style so much!! I mean, I guess I have the advantage that my ideal look is “delias catalog sweater and jeans” but now that trends are cycling so fast, you can definitely find “clean girl” pieces or really anything under the sun at thrift stores nowadays. I wish secondhand was more commonplace for people with non-stereotypically-thrifty aesthetics.
I'm fascinated by videos like this because I buy maybe two items of clothing a year and only buy things that will last, so it's like you're a researcher feeding me information about another world!

I wear alt fashion and it has definitely helped me stop buying more stuff. I can’t even rmr the last time I bought brand new clothing. I feel so horrible because sometimes I buy fast fashion because I can’t afford anything else. I literally had no clothes that fit me at one point recently since I was ill for a long time and then got better which changed my weight. I take really good care of the pieces I get and wear them whenever I want no matter if it’s ‘in’ or not, I keep them in rotation in my wardrobe. I haven’t had any problems with them falling apart or anything. Having more than just sweat pants and tshirts for the first time in like 8 years gives me so much confidence. I’m just not quite sure what else to do.
Believe me when I say no one is talking about people who can only afford fast fashion and take care of their stuff. You're good.
One time i was at a table having lunch and talking about stuff with other people in my program and then they start talking about how they dont want skinny jeans to come back into fashion. I bought some used clothes from the thrift store yesterday. I bought 3 tops. I think the newest thing I bought was a Christmas sweater dress thing with fake fur for like $1 at Walmart. one of my thrift store finds was a cool vest thing I have wanted to buy since high school! I am so happy! Especially since I lost so much wate in the last year! From a size 2x to now a medium! I get inspired by the Internet but I try to buy things I'll use for years, or regift/give away or on a tiny occasion re sell. Usually due to my weight change and I might have wore it once or twice before the weight change.

I like the grunge look. I also wear band shirts/anime shirts. But when I want to chill I legit wear gym clothes (sweats,loose t shirts, or fleece shorts) I also wear a sling bag. I’m genuinely surprised slings/crossbody bags hasn’t been discovered by tik tok trends

the internet pushing ppl into specific “aesthetics” or trying to name every single style is always so strange to me. like not everyone NEEDS to name their style. it can just be your style. usually no one has a SINGULAR style.
I work at a rural PA university and as a millennial mom, I love seeing all the kids personal styles come through. Especially when you can tell they feel confident, that’s when they look best.
As someone who isn’t on TikTok and doesn’t want to be I sure do love hearing about trends and stuff happening on TikTok 😂
On another note, this whole video reminded me of when I was a preteen/teenager in the mid to late 2000s and being really interested in the goth/emo/scene fashion but being too scared/embarrassed to ask my parents or even try wearing it. I’ve always disliked clothes shopping and do it very rarely.

Thank you to the emo and gamer aesthetic for being so androgynous. I don't need to completely redo my wardrobe while I transition. I just wear the same clothes a little differently and just filled in a few gaps to complete some outfits

I think you really hit the nail on the head, Amanda. I'm 41 and truly I'm living my best fucking life. I love my career and I'm at a place where I just don't give a frick what people think whereas I spent my younger years absolutely consumed by it. It's crippling and so much more freeing to just be yourself. My style is mine and I'm comfortable in it. Confidence and self assuredness are beautiful (and healthy ❤)
