*Happy Birthday to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Dion Di Mucci,* *who turns 83 today (July 18th)!!!* *Dion and his original backing group the Belmonts* helped bring white doo- wop from the Bronx to the national charts with such hits as “I Wonder Why” and “A Teenager In Love.” The group went on to tour nationally, and were co-headliners on the ill-fated “Winter Dance Party” tour that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson on February 3rd, 1959. Dion went solo from the group in 1960, and immediately scored with hits such as “The Wanderer,” “Runaround Sue,” “Donna The Prima Donna,” “Ruby Baby” - and later in the decade with “Abraham, Martin, And John.”
Dion was one of the few artists who successfully moved from 50s doo-wop (A Teenager In Love) to 60s pop (Runaround Sue, The Wanderer), and R&B (Abraham, Martin & John). Later, he topped the blues charts. Still going strong, born July 18, 1939.
I would go over to my cousin's house and they had all the Dion and the Belmonts records. Dion was a rocker but the blues were in between the lines. When I heard it, pure joy.
Dion 'dodged' a big bullet over 60 years ago. He gave up his seat on the airplane that carried Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens - and then crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa - killing all on board.
It was Waylon Jennings who gave up his seat to the ''Big Bopper'' (J.P. Richardson) because Richardson was suffering from the flu... It was Jennings who dodged a bullet.
Dion wasn't with the Belmonts when he recorded this. They broke up in October, 1960. Dion was already with Columbia Records when he recorded "Ruby Baby".
This video truly shows the talent Dion really had as a singer. My favorite song by him too. I sing it as well but really don't do it justice like he did. Dion was the King of Cool.
Addicted to this tune. Just keep coming back to this elegant performance. Never was one to chase after anyone, I'm a mutual attraction type o'guy. If I ever did this would've been my jam! By the way, my lady calls this guy mr. happy feet, I see why.
It is true that on the record Ruby Baby it is The Del Satins backing him as it is on all his hits from Runaround Sue on, but this particular performance has no backing vocals it appears to be live with a whole lot of backup musicians no other singers..
Seems to have had the same stage presence as Bobby Darin. But if I say that, It might be the same as saying one of them was copying the other. I darn sure don't mean that. Each had his own style. And, it seems to have worked well for each!
This would be the best video version on the entire website with it’s clear visual and good audio, however if you could zoom in closer throughout the song it would be amazing in my opinion. Butt you know what they say about opinions! Lol If this request comes to fruition somehow please let me know Michelle
Hello 👋 gerlinde How're you doing. Thanks for this comment, I'm nothing without fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness It's nice meeting you here.
The voice is great but unfortunately this concert was done not with a rock or rhythm and blues feel but a silly big band sound that just is not the right feel to Dions music.
I disagree entirely! His Ruby Baby album had lots of big band arrangements, like "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You", "Mammy", "You Made Me Love You"... all of which sound great. His delivery and timing are so adept, he could do the style as well as the very best.
If that arrangement had been released like that back in the day it would have been DOA . That’s the kind of crap 60s kids were rebelling against. Probably Dion was under the thumb of a much older generation of management. Why else would titles like Daniel listed be on his Ruby baby album ? Any teen who bought that album would have been sadly disappointed except for the title cut .
Too bad what made America so powerful in the world/Leader was having the best found character in the peoples of their country. Too bad, almost all of that is gone from them now and are turning traitor to God that made them the best there was on the Earth.
When I first heard this track the Belmont were doing their thing. It sounded rough and greasy. I wanted more. Forget the drifters. This version cleans the track up but it wasn't dirty. No belmonts no soul yuk. This track is bluesy. This track needs an orchestra like Elvis needs a bow tie yuk. Gary MRBC Canada
One of the non-lip-synced of the belmonts. Nice - Dion prime right here. Most of the stuff still around is Ed Sullivan and they didn't let you actually sing, for some reason.
band sucks looks like a European tv show, im guessing Italy, could be france guys cant rock or swing for shit obviously, pick up band very quirk and dirty arrangements, no rehearsal, no backing vocals dion sounds super great as usual
This man was so far ahead of his time musically. Magnificent talent! Been a fan since the 60s.❤😊
2024 still doin it
No in-ear monitors.......no stage monitors.........and he's right on time and SWINGIN'. This is just masterful
I drove my dad nuts with this song...
I wore out the record.
I was 14 at the time.
Great song ...

Dion is beyond cool! He swings like Frank, and he’s cool like Elvis. He’s the singing version of Miles Davis! He’s just a cool cat!
Oh yeah!!
& Bobby Darin!
@@niccoarcadia4179 Agree! Splish Splash was one of my first records. Around 60-61. Bobby was a good actor too. With an adorable wife!
Apt description. cudnt hav characterized him any bttr.
Anthony Michael! I second that!
This band is ON TIME. Nothing better than a great live recording. Dion in fine form here.

Cool then, even cooler now. When many legends are gone,Dion is still rocking with the blues.

Great live performance from Dion, no auto tune, lyp syncing, the real deal.
So glad I grew up listening to real Rock 'n Roll!
Dion wasn't with the Belmonts when he recorded this. They broke up in October, 1960. Dion was already with Columbia Records when he recorded "Ruby Baby".
With the DelSatins backing.
Love me some Dion. Legendary voice. All class.
That is the good ole time music. Music was music to your ears
Dion, the best of that era, no doubt.
Dion has a great talent true legend ❤️
This is now is was back then boys & girls ... _Talent !_
Live performance was outstanding - just as you see here .
This video truly shows the talent Dion really had as a singer. My favorite song by him too. I sing it as well but really don't do it justice like he did. Dion was the King of Cool.

YOUR USE OF THE WORDS "HAD" AND "WAS"
ARE SEVERELY MISTAKEN
i present to you dion dimucci 2020
ua-cam.com/video/U9Nb8EatiEU/v-deo.html
Nothing cooler. I like his dance moves. He has a nice physique. Dion. Great band, too.
I like when he sneaks in the words "listen now" - coolest lyrical move possible.
U kno when u can hear a live version of a song they do on a record & the live is every bit or bttr then u kno they r good!
Dion was such a badass
I LOVE THIS SONG! YES, IT’S ON MY PLAYLIST!❤️🎶
DiMucci was beyond cool!
still is
I love this song.
Check out his song Donna Donna the Prima dona...!!! Very cool song.!!! My fav Dion song..!!!
There are only 4 people featured on the cover of Sgt Peppers's album that are still alive and Dion is one of em......
Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Dion.
This is incredible
Chaz still needs to consider making the movie based on Dion's life!
Pure voice no enhancers
My spouse used to sing this all the time. Loved this song!
Beaux souvenirs de ma jeunesse, c'était mon idole lorsque j'étais adolescent. Merci!
No Dion & The Belmonts. Only Dion. Later, Dion Dimucci.
LOVE THIS SONG. REMINDS OF MY BELATED SISTER
It doesn't matter what he sings he is fantastic then and now with his new Album Girl Friends love him and all his music 💜
Dion: start touring again!
Addicted to this tune. Just keep coming back to this elegant performance. Never was one to chase after anyone, I'm a mutual attraction type o'guy. If I ever did this would've been my jam! By the way, my lady calls this guy mr. happy feet, I see why.
👍 I know what you mean ...🎶
"Mr happy feet" ha ha Love it. The side-slide.
Good cover of the old Drifters song.
J Maldonado same neighborhood Arthur av. Growing up in the late fifties and sixties was great my older brother nicky raised me and loved us all
Great artist.
I love this so much!
as cool as it gets for the time, maybe even longer
Great video and great song 😊
Macho song lovely, love the dance moves.
Dion, King of the Bronx, Belmont Avenue and Fordham Road ! Awesome brass section .Where was this gig?
It is true that on the record Ruby Baby it is The Del Satins backing him as it is on all his hits from Runaround Sue on, but this particular performance has no backing vocals it appears to be live with a whole lot of backup musicians no other singers..
Right Dion's birthday 🎈🎂 today. Cool Cat lives forever!!
dion's song "love came to me" is super cool to. i think he wrote it .
The Drifters with Johnny Moore did the original, much earlier. They were fabulous. Dion does them justice!!
Yummy!! Soooo cool...
From Steve. DION and The BELMONTS are sooooo cool 😎👌.
Gawd. I'm in love.
Ça Façon de bouger un vrai mâle juste assez je adore
This is one cool cat.
FANTÁSTICO!!!
2024 and Dion is still cool
awesome ! never saw this clip
ESPECTACULAR
Smooth
There was not one single Belmont on this recording. Just sayin'. Dion is too cool.
HER NAME WAS RUBY. ❤⚘🕊
Seems to have had the same stage presence as Bobby Darin. But if I say that, It might be the same as saying one of them was copying the other. I darn sure don't mean that. Each had his own style. And, it seems to have worked well for each!
Ernie Peru Dion DiMucci and Bobby Darin were great friends. In fact, Bobby showed Dion how to do taxes!
I know this comment is a year old, but gotta say...read my mind. Very similar to Darin.
they where where both doing the same things EVERYBODY did in the early sixties before the Beatles hit
NAMELY, COPING FRANK SINATRAS ACT
Good as this performance is Dion would probably cringe if he saw this now - he’s all about the blues and R&B, not the cabaret vibe he exuded here.
😍😘🤗💕💕💕💕💕
This would be the best video version on the entire website with it’s clear visual and good audio, however if you could zoom in closer throughout the song

lightly different from all I've heard in the past. Still good.
This song is not by Dion and the Belmonts it's by Dion and the Del Satins
And originally done by the drifters
and Bobby Rydell, et. all.
Cool 😎
Ach ist das cool!
Hello 👋 gerlinde
How're you doing.
Thanks for this comment, I'm nothing without fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness
It's nice meeting you here.
Where's the Belmonts??
That's it.
This song was released two years after Dion left the Belmonts
June 2023 👍❤️🇨🇦
The Belmonts are not part of this song. The original version is with The Del Satins
The voice is great but unfortunately this concert was done not with a rock or rhythm and blues feel but a silly big band sound that just is not the right feel to Dions music.

yup
This song was recorded without the. Belmonts. Let’s get this history correct
He's singing this by his lonesome, no back up no depth no chorus.... one voice. No so called artist would even attempt that today.
Too bad what made America so powerful in the world/Leader was having the best found character in the peoples of their country.
Too bad, almost all of that is gone from them now and are turning traitor to God that made them the best there was on the Earth.
My grandma Rudy johnson song
Don't see the Belmonts! Dion and Bobby Darrin were Frank Sinatras of the 60's!
W o W !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
People seem to have forgotten that the original of this song was by The Drifters: ua-cam.com/video/s2hVa8KHFFU/v-deo.html

Many purists rate him better than Elvis
So wat celine dion ne composé ni paroles ni musique 😠
One of the non-lip-synced of the belmonts. Nice - Dion prime right here. Most of the stuff still around is Ed Sullivan and they didn't let you actually sing, for some reason.
Dion's balding in front of our eyes but, then as now, who gives a fuck? Right?
band sucks
looks like a European tv show, im guessing Italy, could be france
guys cant rock or swing for shit
obviously, pick up band very quirk and dirty arrangements, no rehearsal, no backing vocals
dion sounds super great as usual
Maybe but Dions' voice shines.
Pfffff that’s critical
second reply, it is Belgium so yeah.
DION ❤
The orchestra spoils it.
It really dose it not the same with out the del seltins
