Cole Chaney - Coalshooter (Live on Red Barn Radio)

- A singer-songwriter from near Cattletsburg, Kentucky, he now works full-time as a musician. His musical passion started as a young teen, when his dad bought him his first guitar in 8th grade. It was really his stepdad, Scott Sword, who encouraged his learning, and Cole credits him with being the real reason he started playing.

My dad told me he would break my legs if he caught me in the coal mines and to leave and do something different. I went to war, found the love of my life on an island, then became a tug captain. No regrets except because I left, I never had enough time with my dad after that. He is still the greatest man I've ever known.
that's good, we're still stuck down in kentucky coal mining.
@@ms16648 it's a boat I assume.
@@ms16648 😆 Captain of a tug boat. Another word for Captain is Master. My 1st mate's last name is Bates and I can't wait for the day he becomes a Captain. I will get to call him Master Bates 🤣🤣🤣
@@HighRollinMedia Without the mines, the only jobs left are low wage.
@@coastal9181 low wage jobs and just working at garages.
Pumped that we’re the fortunate few to know of Cole Chaney before he explodes to superstardom
He won't. Too based. Ever listen to the song where he says he won't bend a knee?
Them Kentucky boys just have so much talent
“When you get to the end of the tunnel, just keep on running my friend.” Love the symbolism.
Favorite line 👌
Frances...Rene' Blancher Franklin.
I hate how underrated he is like his one of the best vocalist I’ve heard and he doesn’t have much popularity like he definitely deserves it
Did you even hear the words? Man has something to say.
Guys like him don’t care and that’s what true country is about.
Wow never heard of him but you are right. My grandfather's name was Octave by the way......you don't see those names often but I think they are so strong and prominent.
Not for long, my friend
He's not as popular as he should be because he's a generic Tyler Childers
This song really speaks to me. I come from a long line of West Virginia coal miners who were so poor they couldn’t even afford to go to school, let alone move somewhere else and find better jobs. It took a group effort to get them out of the holler and into a city a state away for a better shot at life, and my dad doesn’t let me forget what it took from my grandfathers so that him, my brother, and I could live better lives and not have to work in those mines.
We not gonna say how great this chord prog/pickin' is?
Terrific.
No words needed brother that guitar is doin all the talking for him
Its insane
Notice how he holds his pick
My grandpa grew up in coal wood West Virginia with 5 brothers and a sister in a shitty company house, his oldest brothers Harry and John work coal their whole lives and died of black lung my grandfather did it for a few years but stole his brothers birth certificate and joined the navy and left, he eventually was stationed in Rhode Island and had my mother and my aunts I honor him and his brothers I’m an open pit miner with the biggest quarry in Rhode Island, god bless coal miners we have no idea the struggle they had
What do u mine bro ?
@@claymounts919 probably coal if you read what he said throughly.
@@claymounts919 just regular aggregate for asphalt and concrete
@@kalebparten1591 no but I wish I was no coal is mined in Rhode Island
Even when you leave Appalachia,... it never leaves you. I've been away for 30 plus years, and it still feels more like home than it does here...
Those mountains are always whispering in my ear.
Brother you ain’t kidding it whispers all the time and I can feel it all the way down to my bones
My favorite current song. We need an album. Cole is legit.
He’s got a single, album coming soon👀👀👀
Its out
This song reminds me of dark black coal by Logan halstead
Dude if you keep writing songs like this one and the flood, people will gravitate to it weather you want them too or not really.
Thanks to redbarn for uploading him. They get overlooked I'm sure and without them I wouldn't know who this guy is(and a CPL others for that matter)
Cole is my cousin on my dads side! We definitely are proud of him!! Checkout (if you haven’t yet!) his new album Mercy!!
Same bro
This will go down in history for one of the best Western classic country songs ever written. The story telling is great, the tone and temp pace the story and you can feel the description in the lyrics and voice. It's very well put together and I'm very surprised he isn't getting credit that needs to be given to him. Cole Chaney has pure talent
This dude can sing, sounds the same on Spotify and live filming. This song tells a story that most can’t relate to, but wow.
Eastern Kentucky has really turned out some of the best singer/songwriters in the last 10 years. I mean, not just good musicians, but great songwriters too. Music is my lifeblood, and musicians like this just haunt you with lyrics matched with their vocals. That's coming from an East Tennessean. There's a music festival here called Bristol Rhythm and Roots, and I'd love to see you there next year. Jason Isbell is headlining this year I believe.
Holly Forbes
Why am I just now finding this?! It’s been on repeat for the last 10 minutes
Download my debut album, "Mercy," here.

Cody Bennett hell yeah, it’s nice they have the songs individually uploaded now on here. This dude man, he can sing. Has a great look too
No homo
Ayden Wiles he’s really active on social media man. Follow him on Facebook and Instagram, he will respond and give you a holler. Best guy you can have as a buddy. This album is gonna burn the house down. Best thing you can do is share his stuff bud!
Wow i instantly went to download on spotify very sad hes not there yet
@@thaliverkiller he is now ill will creek is on spotify
I know talent from KY when I hear it
I know my cousin Cole here when I hear him play! I need to upload the vids I have from a couple years ago playin at my uncles house!
Another legend out of the hills and hollers of my kentucky home.
Before my grandpa passed he made me swear I’d be the first male in the family to not go into the mines. Much respect for the ones who do it
Second generation electrician coal miner here in eastern kentucky great song
My old lady went to high school with you. You gotta get on iTunes so I can add this to my road playlist. Workin 80+ hour weeks keeping this damn ungrateful country running, this type of music gets me thru it. If you’re scared go to church cmon
C'mon
C’mon wit it
Unreal brother keep with it man have the same feeling when Listened to tyler childers the first time . Love the guitar playing also and the grit keep killing it bro big things to come 👊
It would be hard to find that much grit without looking at clint eastwood but, he had three balls to contain his in too.....
Agreed! Don't sleep on this guy!
That’s what i was thinking too. This is the best kind of music out there
His voice has a lot of emotion! Brings back a lot of memories from the oilfields
My great grandma grew up in a cabin the middle of nowhere West Virginia. She lived with her two sisters and grandparents. They had dirt floors and a shitty cabin. You discribing where you lived reminds me of that place.
"Cole & Colter" '22 tour anyone?
"Boom"
This is the greatest folk song ever written.
Over the past couple years since I went through some pretty traumatic crap . I've found some of the best music artists playing on red barn radio. It's amazing. You definitely don't disappoint man
Nothin better the a guy and his guitar telling a story love it
Love him. That soul!!
I'm a fan😍😍
Brings back a lot of memories of shooting coal when I was 18. Later I was bolting top when the new shot firer blasted through a break on me. Young and stupid I just kept bolting covered in coal. Keep the great songs coming so my memories don’t fade away.
In Johnson county holler where the minin' comp'ny bloomed
He lived in a house with all five brothers, his dearest sisters too
The summer heat was as bad as the mud that the humid air did brew
In the winter the snow just blowed on in through holes in the wall you could throw a dog through
[Verse 2]
As an able-bodied boy he lied about his age
To help his father break away from the rattle of a poor man's ball and chain
They made him shoot their coal and he was grateful at the time
There was many a boy that'd done the same and they'd never come out alive
[Chorus]
Better run coalshooter run
Run away as fast as you can
And when you get to the end of the tunnel just keep on runnin' my friend
Cause this ain't no kind of life that a young man should live
If you can run faster than gunpowder burns you might see the light again
[Verse 3]
Well they were bitin' down on blasting caps just doing like daddy asked
Even though they knew that the next bite down could surely be their last
You ain't got no time to be scared no, with dynamite in your hands
Don't hesitate boy cause if you slip up, son you're as good as dead
[Chorus]
Better run coalshooter run
Run away as fast as you can
And when you get to the end of the tunnel just keep on runnin' my friend
Cause this ain't no kind of life that a young man should live
If you can run faster than gunpowder burns you might see the light again
[Verse 4]
They sent him deep into the mine where a boy can't see the light of day
Guided by the lamp on his head in the dark he begins
To pray that the fuses were all cut right and that a stray spark don't take light
And prays that he won't die in this mine, he hates the thought
Mama cries
[Chorus]
You better run coalshooter run
Run away as fast as you can
And when you get to the end of the tunnel just keep on runnin' my friend
Cause this ain't no kind of life that a young man should live
If you can run faster than gunpowder burns you might see the light again
You might see the light again
He hates the thought of momma cryin' *
My new favorite emerging artist. Side note, would absolutely love to hear Childers cover this song.
Best song I've heard in a awhile
This is what I do for my job I am a underground shot fire man ps don't bite on a blasting cap nothing good can come from it
Miner and proud love the song thank you
Whoa! Love your voice. This is a sad and true song. My dad worked in the mines until he was too hurt to work any more. Ive worked way too many coal mine accidents and disasters. No worse words to read than “30 minutes to surface”
He should nickname his backing band Allis N' Chalmers.
Ya know, as a tribute to both his country roots and his influences from Alice in Chains.
This dude is the real deal
Entire song is great but from 3:48 to the end is 👌🏻 Perfect
One of the better songs I’ve heard in a good little bit
When I get my radio station going I will be putting underrated musicians on there!! These guys deserve more recognition!
2 years later still #1
I met the man (one of them anyways?) that is Red Barn Radio. Saw him down twice in Waco for two bands I really loved. HE IS LEGIT. THIS MAN GOT SOUL FOR DAYS AND A DAMN GOOD EYE FOR REAL TALENT. He was SO SMART, FUNNY, REAL, and just an all around good dude. 💯 This red barn is just about as good as it gets folks.
Please put more songs on Spotify. We all need this beautiful music.
Dope name kurt
It makes my soul happy to see people like us find a way out of those hills. Although those hills are home, they trap people. Some people try so hard to escape but will never find their way out.
True talent, writing as well as guitar playing, seems like a good down-to-earth person
That raw realness that you are singing about is what made many people and families,
this is a hit, fantastic overall!
East ky pushing out fine country singers left and right! Rest of the country better catch up
Just beautiful ❤
This guy is really good
Met Cole few weeks ago. Better than advertised he even loved my jacket
This is the first video I ever stumbled upon of Cole Chaney. I knew I had to see him live. Took a 10 hour drive to the Foxfire Festival in Ashland, KY and, man, was it a good time. Just raw talent. Good picking and singing. Til the next time I see ya, keep on keepin' on. Be well
A brilliant talent!
Great song, passionate delivery
This song makes me cry for somreason
God,I miss the good old days.....Thank you for refreshing my mind on how it feels.

Awesome guy! Got addictet to his music, greets form germany
Cole, I really dig your music. Simple as that, hope you get what I mean. I'm in my late sixties, live in Louisville, was introduced to your music by a contestant on American Idol from Louisa, KY. You kinda got a John Prine deal goin' on with what you do and I hope you understand what a compliment I'm payin' you when I say that. Please keep makin' music!
This guy is awesome 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Coming from a coal mining town in Harlan KY, like many others, have done more than listened to your song. But lived it too.
Love this music man, doesn’t get a whole lot of appreciation these days.
beautiful mate
I got to see him preform in person he’s definitely got me as a fan
I love this song so much! Cole sir...what a beautiful portrait you paint. Not many new songs make me close my eyes and turn my head back and forth in utter pleasure anymore but this one gets me and hope someday it’s very well known
Botha the way you turn those words into magic is almost holy. I'm so glad you write, sing, and play like this.
Helluva talent right here
Man I just started learning to cover this, that picking is insane. This man is a legend
Love this
great song
Gives me goosebumps
Damn
"They were biting down on blasting caps; even tthough they knew the next bite down would surely be their last."
My grandpa worked in the mines here in Harlan Kentucky and he was missing some fingers and had a scar from his chest all the way down from being trapped in the mine. Not an easy life.
God damn.....just...god....damn
I blast rock. Love this shit! I die for it
Just went on an hour long deep dive into what it means to bite down on a blasting cap
so good
Amazing
Crazy how i got so drunk with this guy and the next day forgot who he was at school good days!!!
Good. Very good.
That's a chord licking fool, next up and comer for sure. Makes me miss KY, just added to let my neighbors here some good music in Arizona
Fantastic ❤️🔥🎸🙏
This makes me wanna make a movie about coal miners just to use this song as a score.his haunting tone and vivid story telling just reminds me of a film score!
Beautiful song 🎵
From 1 Chaney to another this shits 🔥 boy keep picking that six string
Real country music.
He’s appearing at The Aaey in Paintsville, Kentucky. A real venue for singers.
My dad shot coal before he became a foreman. We were fortunate. He retired from the mines in relatively good health and enjoyed his retirement
I worked 13 years as a supervision in several coal mines in East Kentucky and Alabama.
"Prays that he won't die in this mine, he hates the thought of momma cryin." Feel it in my bones.
Thank u for this 👑
Just discovered you. Very impressed
Very good
I grew up in the suburbs...I don't pretend to feel any sort of empathy from this song...but holy shit this a fantastic song.
