For those full time musicians who do NOT have unlimited income, which means nearly all of you. Here is an alternative: the Korg Electribe2 or Sampler. $400.00 add a keyboard controller for $100 to $160 and you have a portable (battery) driven playable synth with 16 tracks, 16 effects inserts, and unlimited sound if choosing the sampler. Compose in 4 measure chunks then chain them all together for a full song.
manquri: Yes, software always seems cheaper...but you're leaving out the cost of the computer or tablet, upgrades to hardware, software, operating systems, memory. By the time you own a software instrument 3 years it costs more than the OP-1. You're also leaving out the complexity and and the crashes. I tried creating music on a computer and found it to be impossible. I started on computers in the printing industry in 1990 using million dollar super computers, then later to MACs, PCs,.... been repairing computers for a quarter century now, I know them pretty well. I now use a stand alone hardware recorder for laying down tracks and transfer to computer to do the post tracking work. ROM chips in hardware are very dependable compared to the RAM/ROM/application/operating system of computers and tablets. I now make music effortlessly on hardware recorders, which leave my creativity wide open without the troubleshooting and mess of computers.
Wilderness Music if I'm talking about using a tablet, I'm not leaving it's cost out. There are free softwares to make music with. If you are using the tablet exclusively as a synth, you can skip the updates and just keep a backup of the system as it was first installed, you could even use a tool that freezes that so when you reboot nothing has changed, then just save your files to a micro sd card. Even counting paying someone for the setup, it goes up to 500$ (including a decent compact midi controller) If in 3years you need to buy 3-5 tablets (especially if using them in a static way) you probably would need to buy another op1. You don't really need to upgrade either unless you want something more powerful, but then you're not comparing apples to apples. Though I'll give you that software crashes are more likely with this kind of setup than with an op1.
People underestimate the costs of a professional musical instrument. The OP-1, even with its limitations, is still what I'd call a professional-grade instrument. Really good review and overview of the device. I was curious after seeing remixes posted to UA-cam that were created with one.
I like to set the LFO to element, with G as the source (accelerometer), and just wobble/tilt the thing to kind of simulate velocity/aftertouch, and get a bit more expression that way.
That was a great review. You have answered all my questions about that particular product in four and a half minutes. And you did it with humor. I do think now I would consider taking the plunge for one, that is as long as Behringer would stop releasing so many beautiful synths and drum machines. So many toys available with a limited amount of money....maybe one day! Thanks
I just say ROLI. Small Piano with 5 dimension of touch, add a drum/sound effect square and another item of your choice, you have a much more immersive item you can attach and play more than pure binary inputs
This is the type of thing where you collab with your friends and buy it. I got my eyes on one, and I already have a powerful laptop, my friends have an organelle, seaboard rolli and stuff like that. Together we can play some awesome stuff
honestly i think having 4 tracks to record with limiting in a good way, it requires more creativity to cram everything you want into only 4 tracks. i mean, John Frusciante was able to create the sprawling Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt with a 4 track.
Yup! The initial setup requires some work (installing certain tools) but then its a matter of few minutes basically to create new drumkits. RMR has a video on this: ua-cam.com/video/oYN2AlTEyOY/v-deo.html
@@flipmacyt Yes and no. I do believe it's an awesome piece of gear and already a classic. TE is a small company so the price is naturally higher. However I now think there are better options for the price. In hindsight It's better suited to more experienced electronic musicians. I'm happy that I have it, but I think other gear would've been more beneficial at the time (or when starting out now): deluge, digitakt/tone, mpc one to name a few. Hope that helps!
Personally I prefer non velocity sensitive keys as I can adjust that in my daw and I don’t have to worry about playing in the velocities that I want as I can perfect it afterwards
Why?? Because an (ever growing) segment of our consumer culture, brand aware, species believe that paying MORE is better than paying what is warranted, ESPECIALLY if famous people name drop the item.
OMGooooooowd....I've literally been able to afford an OP 1 for about 3 years........and I somehow waited until now to decide to get one....and now they're twice the price they were when I last looked, so....aaargh. It's *kind* of like the TB303 all over again for me. When will I learn? Grasp the Nettle. Grasp the ***kin Nettle. Happy New Yeah y'all......
@Niger Nelly Not really, most people who try the OP-1 really dislike it. It does a few things well and everything else it's bad at to the point where you don't want to make music with it. The ones who like it really like it, the rest wouldn't incorporate it in their recording setup unless they were forced at gunpoint.
@Niger Nelly You said; "Every artist love the synth", that's kind of a broad and bold statement. I've worked with music for 10 years and neither I nor any of my producer friends actually like the OP-1. There are hundreds of other synths that can sound like it and it's not fun to work with. Furthermore, the limitations of the synth, like the number of tracks for recording and limited editability make most tunes made with the OP-1 sound like they were made on a OP-1 (that's not a compliment). If people want to buy an OP-1, then that's their prerogative. But saying that everyone loves the OP-1 sets really bad expectations for people who have to save up to buy one.
Well let's say for the sake of an argument that i have an ability to slap sleek buttons and screens on something, but what is that lunchbox thou speaketh of?
That was great! I have heard many people reference the amazing OP1 and then I watch an overview video and scratch my head. Thanks for the excellent perspective
@@tysonmoore5909 when you menage to sell your op-1 for 1k just get a thinkpad e15 with i7 10th Gen. they are used by collages and large buisnesses so you will always have repair parts. they are also pretty easy to repair compared to mac's
@@tysonmoore5909 thats exactly what ive done. but i dont regret it, now i can truly appreciate the power a daw has. all that automation, easy sequencing, randomization, beeing able to stack 1000 effects on top of each other and to change everything after you recorded its just incredible. but i think if i wouldnt have started with the op-1, i would be so overwhlemed by a daw. Also if oyu dont need the portability get a desktop pc when you build it your own (fairly easy just plug cables into inputs) you will get crazy power for low prize, also maybe go for amd instead of intel amd is way better prize/power
There are a few all-in-one production instruments that are cheaper. Generally these are called "grooveboxes". The most popular ones, right now, are the Novation Circuit and the Korg Electribe; though there are others, like the Casio XW-PD1. There are also older groovebox models, like the Yamaha RM1X, Roland MC-505, et al; these range in quality from "okay" to "legendary", though they're old and no longer being made, so they're more likely to need repairs or retrofitting before being reliable to use. Google around for "groovebox" and you'll find a lot of info.
Aster having the chance to play around with pne i can say that even if you wont use it profesionally and only ocasionally but have the disposable income to afford it go for it it really is fun.

@@hernebayplaycentre3436 not only that, the software that the op1 run is extremely well thought. its like a great design inside another great design. developers really took their time creating this synth, everything is smooth and neat. and the most mind blowing fact is that it was realesed in 2012!! and it stills being unbeatable after all this time. no other company has dared to compete with the op1
@@hernebayplaycentre3436 a $1299 now but when it first came out it was only $899 but due to videos like this it gain popularity and then there was inflation.
Compose in 4 measure chunks then chain them all together for a full song.
a 100-200$ intel atom tablet with windows, your software of choice, and a small midi keyboard or a launchpad.
manquri: Yes, software always seems cheaper...but you're leaving out the cost of the computer or tablet, upgrades to hardware, software, operating systems, memory.
Even counting paying someone for the setup, it goes up to 500$ (including a decent compact midi controller)
If in 3years you need to buy 3-5 tablets (especially if using them in a static way) you probably would need to buy another op1.
You don't really need to upgrade either unless you want something more powerful, but then you're not comparing apples to apples.
Though I'll give you that software crashes are more likely with this kind of setup than with an op1.
Buying a used Novation Circuit is also a cheap option
Or get an organelle
I like listening to you talk about stuff. Really enjoyed your PO-33 vid, too! Thanks for all the hard work
People underestimate the costs of a professional musical instrument. The OP-1, even with its limitations, is still what I'd call a professional-grade instrument. Really good review and overview of the device. I was curious after seeing remixes posted to UA-cam that were created with one.
It's a sophisticated piece of kit, housed in what looks like a toy.

Together we can play some awesome stuff
honestly i think having 4 tracks to record with limiting in a good way, it requires more creativity to cram everything you want into only 4 tracks. i mean, John Frusciante was able to create the sprawling Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt with a 4 track.
yep, go experience ua-cam.com/video/cUrKE_ktTXI/v-deo.html a demonstration of more with less :-)
I bought the OP-1 a few weeks ago and so far it feels like the best musical investment since my first "real" electric guitar.
2mbst1 can you add different drums sounds to it, is it easy to add sounds
Yup! The initial setup requires some work (installing certain tools) but then its a matter of few minutes basically to create new drumkits. RMR has a video on this: ua-cam.com/video/oYN2AlTEyOY/v-deo.html
Do you think still it s worth the money ?
I bought it when it first came out. I’m still learning new ways to use it. One of the better gear investments.
I love the OP1

Why??
Because an (ever growing) segment of our consumer culture, brand aware, species believe that paying MORE is better than paying what is warranted, ESPECIALLY if famous people name drop the item.
So nearly at 1 mil! U deserve it!
Because just look at that thing, it's next level tech, no wonder it's expensive xD

But tbh a LOT of things like the OP 1 that aren't necessarily expensive to make like Eurorack modular pieces are expensive
It's not next level tech.
It's hella old and should not still be this expensive.

Saving all my pennies to get this Synth. I can't wait.
What I think is genius is how I can use it as a sketchpad for ideas and it is freaking fun. It helps me work out ideas.
Can you create 'Mongolian throat singing' sound effect with OP-1 ?
if yes, that would be awesome, i love traditional Mongolian music.

Somebody really needs to slap some sleek buttons & an OLED on a lunchbox and make an open source portable DSP system
Well let's say for the sake of an argument that i have an ability to slap sleek buttons and screens on something, but what is that lunchbox thou speaketh of?
Something to put all the other bits inside/on. Preferably a sleek custom aluminum case; but failing that - a lunchbox.

Techno ist Leben I live in Australia, the OP-1 is worth $1,800 here :) personally, I’d spend the money on camera equipment for my business :)

Huh, that's interesting, thanks for the info. :)
The Yamaha QY series
Pocket Operators, Volcas. Ha-ha, im almost not serious, but this things is bottom, while OP-1 is top. (Also they are incredibly cheap)
