one of the underappreciated bands, at Newport Pop Festival (LA 69) they wore top hats and tails! Randy got hung up on pull offs and echo! Loved these guys!!!
Yeah, first 4 were excellent albums and I liked all of them the since then. All guys from their 1st lineup did their best, I suppose. Very clever music and composing songs in various styles. I never idle to listen to their albus till now. USA can be proud having the band like this.
i love spirit still, they can go from one weird psychedelic thing to normal, rock, country an some of the best blues as robert johnson,....wagon of wood, and apple orchard, dark eyed woman,an many others...........
Long time Spirit--fan since late 70s when they where at Rockpalazt in Germany. Also, this band was totally special for me, because of their earlier recordings.
Interesting that you say that because I've long thought there were similarities in the guitar tones and sustain that Justin Hayward and Randy California both favored.
thank you very much for this, this set is a little rough around the edges compared to the studio version, but closely follows what are two of the greatest rock and roll/psychedelic songs written.. Actually I think it is a little more historic than that; they document the perceptions of some very good artists and humans who took a look around them at that time, and saw clearly how fubar the world around them was and they turned that into beautiful and compelling music.. I f that is not the best of what true artists can do, I will kiss your hatl
+A Pa Thank you very much for your interesting comment. I think Jimmy Page like their songs as well. As you now Led Zeppelin also played Fresh Garbage live on stage then. No need to say about Taurus / Stairway To Heaven link. By the way you can clearly hear that Randy played some chords of Taurus during refrain of Mechanical World on this video. Anyway they were fantastic band for myself. And my hat off to them!
+Sasha MoGhilla - another interesting backstory is Randy "California" Wolfe had an uncle .Ed Pearl, who ran a club called the 'Ash Grove' which was a center for some of the greatest musicians around. Many 'greats' played there and it was a famous place. I think Ed Pearl even would let some of them, like Howling Wolf the great bluesman, stay at his house when he came to play. So Randy was exposed to all kinds of music and it shows in his music.
If it ain't my brother A Pa!!! Hope you're well! And I'd like to add that in the studio Randy made great use of "pedal steel guitar" especially in the haunting lines of Mechanical World.(which he pulled of great in this live version on his Les Paul) AND of course another technique that Page "ripped off" BUT subconsciously managed to pass some critical homage to Randy through the exact same wording in album liner notes of that era-"pedal steel guitar"- precisely worded as such in the liner notes of the Zeppelin LPs which came after the Spirit LPs. Mark Christopher Andes should bring up THAT little gem in this second round of the appeal. My point is Page copied Randy's EXACT tones and techniques in his studio recordings since the very first Zep album, Exactly the same sound. That's NO coincidence. Cheers!
Massive upload... Second one I've come across tonight... Big thanks.... Definiely my favourite Spirit period,,,, Spirit to Sardonicus. Spirit... best of the bunch,,,,, as others have so beuatively put it... Fucking Priceless! Some Great Society or The Grape (Skippy Spence era) would be an even greater mind fuck though!!! =) =) =)
Thank you for your comment John. All first SPIRIT albums are great and these two songs are the spirit of SPIRIT for myself. Oh, yeah ... Skip (R.I.P.) unfortunately lost himself during 'Wow' recording sessions :(
Would love to find a video of Spirit singing Mechanical World with Jay singing lead. Just rediscovered that song. Loved it when it came out. I had the 45.
Sasha MoGhilla I heard this song mech world when I was a kid.... we were in Daytona I was born in 61 got so many strange vibes from the music, I looked for this song for years.... and others my dad liked tejuanna brass whipped cream only music I ever saw him like.... the music was sooo good, the English have a trippey mode which I like the best the asid thing was soposed to be California but guess what the English was the best
Patrick, thank you for your flashback. I heard this song for the first time on CBS compilation 'That's Underground' in 1969. It was multicoloured vinyl with inverted photo of Randy California on the front cover. And since then this song is on my Top 10 ever.
Excellent band of course. No complaints, yet I think it is a little disingenuous to use a seminal image of Buto performing group Sankai Juku? Was there a connection?
You're right , Joel. My love to Spirit is endless. I remember those days when I did listen to 1st album and then 'Clear'. And I couldn't stop to buy all their recordings since then. Great band and Americans can be proud to have the band like this. Maybe I feel I'm not a lady though... :)
I'm an old man who loves rock'n roll.78.
I am a Spirit fan, saw them numerous times. They were never as terrible as this is in the performances I saw.
Gotta agree, they were much better live at least in my mind.
! ?
This is a reunion, not sure if it's the one from 76 or from the 80s. None of the reunions were very good.
WOW! MAJOR BLAST FROM THE PAST !! Thank you for posting this-especially LIVE !!!
@@janicecioffi3187 Yeah! Live and nice.
So sweet to find a video like that in the middle of the night. That's old school youtube baby!
Yeah! The night is good like that of course.

I only went because of them, but hey I saw Jimi twice and about 15 other 60s bands.
As a 60/70's music fan, I love this 80's version. Spirit has been following me, even if I didn't know it
Very close to album versions of the songs, I suppose.
Dig Ed Cassidy with the symphony bass drums on each side. These guys were special.
My favorite spirit song
OMFG!!!!!???? Where in the hell do you people find this stuff!!!???
Fucking PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!!!!!!!!
Yep/ We were there/
Lucky dogs you are! I hope that was one of wonderful moment for you.
Is this Randy California ?
@@radiohead68 Yes!
Best looking drum kit EVER Love the first 4 albums and quite a few of the later 'ones Original lineup is the classic though with. Locke and ferguson'

Yes of course they could play any style of music easily, David. That's why I never been boring listening to their albums for years...
awesome ,,mechanical world
this is my first time to see them live doing this song; very good. I use to have the 45rpm, and played it often. great group!!!
Long time Spirit--fan since late 70s when they where at Rockpalazt in Germany. Also, this band was totally special for me, because of their earlier recordings.
Fantastic, cutting edge recorded output. I have always thought, based on the video history, a little bit of a mess live 🤷♂️
Fresh Garbage 🎉🎉🎉
Mechanical world was so dark drug song. I was maybe 7 and a older kid let my watch a show call underground on TV in Florida. I got a 45 record of it.
Always thought Mechanical World sounded like something the Moody Blues would have done. Definitely has that feel.
Interesting that you say that because I've long thought there were similarities in the guitar tones and sustain that Justin Hayward and Randy California both favored.
Saw them live while living in California, late 70s, early 80s. Topanga Windows..👍
Mark Andes' brother Matt playing 2nd guitar on this from their short lived reunion in the 80's
Thank you for your comment about Matt!
Thanks for making great musical history fun.
Thanks for watching, John. I hope you have enjoyed it.
Sasha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thumbs up'd & subscribed! Lets bump this up!!!! Freakin' awesome! 8 months later & I found it again

If I'm not mistaken that is Jay Ferguson, only clean shaven as is Randy. This must have been recorded sometime in the 80's.
Awesome!
wow!thank you

Great song but a sad concept.
Anyone notice Randy throwing in some "Taurus" at 4:24?
Yes of course Peter! It's a difference from album version of the song.
No and don't care
@@lindawebb2457 My apologies, if I had known "Taurus" was such a hot button topic for you I certainly wouldn't have brought it up three years ago.
Needs more volume.
Was this around '69?
As you know both songs from their first album of 1968, but video itself is from mid-'80s, I suppose.
I think they played with LSD....... what a trip.... 😂
I think the Mechanical World song is a trip itself because it had been written by Mark Andes when he was sick.
