  • Today I cover one of the largest updates to Adobe Software that will change the way motion graphics artists design. At the Adobe MAX 2023 Conference, their team revealed a new AI tool called "Text-to-Vector". I explain what it is, how to use it, and how it will change motion graphics moving forward.

    I used this the other day to help me build a logo, and I can’t explain how frustrating it was to use. First, it made everything far too complicated, with lots of different shapes and colours within. Second, the prompt language was very difficult to figure out. I eventually gave up, and used my iPad to sketch what I wanted, which was infinitely faster. I think it has a long way to go and at Adobe‘s pace I think it will take a few years.

    1:50 part of the story told in a high quality animation project is the assets the animator uses. perhaps often motion designers use bought or readymade elements to 'tell their story'. I'm personally a graphic designer and a motion graphic designer and all my work is made up of assets I myself created originally. I think there's something somewhat confusing in saying 'use these tools to tell a better story'. I don't think you'd get to tell a better story by using non original elements. I do think you'll work faster, you're workflow will be easier, and you'd be able to focus better on the animation side of things. that might suit certain projects and don't get me wrong, I'm not here to advocate against AI tools that make our lives easier and simplify our workflow. all I'm saying is that those assets are the DNA of the story that you tell as a designer. designing a project from the ground up and 'taking hours to design elements and backgrounds', even those that you'd end up not using, is the basic principle of the process of design. the creative process the designer undertakes as they get familiar with the grounds of their project and stretch their creative thinking to new limits. it's like pregnancy-it's long and tedious and mistakes and faffing about are inevitable. but this is what results in the best story that you have told. the original story of you or your client.
    this is just my opinion. I'm not here to take the piss. these are the building blocks that I consider important in my creative process personally and this is also what's important to the people I work with. that everything has our original touch on it. I understand and respect that not every client or creator shares this approach...

      First off just want to give you credit for getting on here and sharing your opinion in depth. So many just want to throw a oneliner and leave. There are so many aspects i relate to in terms of you talking about your personal creative process and who you work for and what they value. I think you said it perfectly that some clients value the price over product and are willing to sacrifice the quality of their product. In terms of brainstorming, i think this is where this tool will come into play for me. But look forward to see where it goes.

    • @YotamGuttman
      @YotamGuttman 9 місяців тому +5

      no doubt. I've used AI for brainstorming a lot lately. for coming up with new ideas for my illustrations, it can inspire me in both the context level as well as visual like coming up with new compositions. these tools are undoubtedly a valuable asset in the toolkit of a creative professional. but I feel they both have the power to spur and expand our creativity but can also allow us to be lazy and provide shortcuts in the creative thinking process which naturally takes time and involves sometimes frustrating trial and error.

    Newest worlkflow update: everything done with one voice prompt! In multiple versions!. The only job available is to decide which design is the best for your client, twitch the design to you clinet's whim via a prompt, and -most importantly- try to convince potential clients that they have no judgement and you do via social media. Surely there will be some who will be real artists at this, but for some reason all these future changes makes me kind of sad/mad. Maybe I shouldn't be.

    This is AI text prompt to vector graphics in Illustrator. Plus restyling of existing vector graphics in a style defined by an AI prompt.
    That took less than 10 seconds to read. The video took 90 seconds to get to that point.
    Notice how making a video wasn’t the most efficient way of getting that information across. Text is. Video is much better for demoing and exploring implications.

    I remember having to *opt out* of Adobes use of your stuff for AI. They wouldn't do an *opt in* because no one would willingly do so. Deviant Art got backlash for a similar setup. That's where I draw the line for AI use. People can copy all they want but they are limited by their own human capabilities. But its alright for these corporations to steal *everything* even remotely public to feed their massive machine? It wasn't even a decade ago that corporations sued for people even mimicking their their stuff. Why don't individuals get that same protection for their artwork?

Without giving a dime to Adobe and doing it all locally! :) All you need is about 6GB VRAM for the lowest end and about 12GB VRAM for the recommended spec! Good luck to all, whichever you choose!

    Also this telling a story part is become so much more tired with each passing month. Like, do you storytelling really require a custom visual representation if you are able to get around with some random stock image remix? If the only thing that matters is that assets looks pretty, why not write a text, or use stock footage (the "generation" of which will come soon).

      I know im making it sound like creating original designs isnt worth creating anymore, but that is so far from the truth. Certain clients have certain needs and deadlines and you have to as a creator/designer figure out what the project needs. Some clients have the time and money to invest in creating their own unique look, some clients want something that just “passes”. Does this quickfix desire create human moving, life touching visual experiences. No.
