Oda liked those portrayals so much that he created Franky for the voice actor. And not so fun fact, the actor has recently retired, as he is having severe health issues
That's what I love about Oda. Instead of the Surprise Villain trope that so many in western entertainment do these days, Oda inverts that. I love when Oda introduces good characters by having a bad reputation first, but seeing their true positive colors later.
Yeah, the One Piece experience typically is something like: East Blue is cool, I really liked some parts. Then Nami stabbed her arm and asked Luffy for help, and I realized I love these characters. Then Alabasta and Skypiea happen, and you think "huh, this is actually insane", and then water 7 and enies lobby happen and it's over for any chance you had of not being a life-long fan.

A big fan theory, not official in any shape or form, but Franky DID held the plans for the Pluton weapon for quite a long time. So... how much of Pluton's design and features might have went into the new Straw Hat ship?
You know I've seen the grab gag numerous times, but it never once occurred to me that it was confirmation that Franky didn't... remodel those lol but you're right.
Franky is such a truly masterpiece written "second" character. This manga/anime can't fail bringing me joy and tears even after watching it again and again
