Off to the Market with my Feedbag Tote

I wanted to try to learn how to create a tough and versatile tote from an animal feedbag. We saved a couple of bags for me to have a go with - I just love this project!!! 😊 I took someone that we had on hand and kept it out of the landfill. PLUS the totes are stinking cute!!! I will definitely make more of these - some folks around the country are getting together and having an old fashion “sewing bee” and making 40-50 of these bags in a weekend. They then donate the bags to their local animal shelter as a fundraiser for the shelter. What a COOL idea!!! I can feel the wheels a turning. 😊
Items needed for the project:
• Sewing machine and coordinating thread
• Feedbags (the woven material kind)
• Scissors
• Sewing pins
Directions:
• Gather all materials
• Remove any manufacturing binding
• Clean bags thoroughly and allow to dry completely
• Lay out flat
• Cut handles from end of bag (I tried multiple widths - 2, 3, and 4” widths - find the width that is most comfortable for you)
• Fold handle material into thirds
• Sew around perimeter of strap material
• Turn bag inside out
• Sew bottom edge of bag body
• Sew triangle on each side (use the width of the side pleat to get an idea of triangle width)
• Turn bag right side out
• Be sure to get corners into place
• Fold hem down around the edge
• Attach straps
o Multiple ways to do this:
o Sew strap flat inside the hemmed edge OR
o Place strap inside top hem and sew 2 rounds around the hem - thereby locking the strap into place
• Press edges to help get best presentation (I found that my hem pressed worked really well)
• Head to the market 😊
