    So... Social Media Sites don't sell your data... but they sell ads using your data... aka access to your data is being profited on. Social Media is free because we pay for it by giving up our personalized ad spaces. We do pay for it by letting them profit on collection of our data

      From a Forbes article (4 years old):
      “Facebook is in reality renting access to data. Its sole value proposition to developers is access to its two billion users.

      Putting this all together, in the end companies like Facebook may attempt to draw legal differences between “selling data” and “selling access” and that IP addresses still constitute “anonymity” but the reality is that the general public sees all of these monetization behaviors as the same exploitation of their personal privacy for monetary gain. Instead of arguing semantics, companies should take genuine steps towards regaining the trust of their users, starting with coming clean about all of the ways they exploit their users’ data and all of the ways they have considered using their data and no longer hiding behind arcane legal definitions.”

    This right here is why social media exists. Letting idiots like me vent our convoluted opinions helps keep us on line viewing the scammy advertising that pays for all this and helps us to feel like we are part of an organic community instead of a curated user experience that actively steers us to things that make us stupider and less critical of the things we are told.

    Damn. Can't get away from big brother, we make the content for these guys without getting paid a cent and then they make money from our attention as well!
    I'm not against social media but it's good to be aware of it's mechanisms and effects on us.

    When facebook recommended my therapist.... the only way it would know that connection is from my phone contacts! 😖

      Facebook recommended my landlord as a friend. I have his phone number in my phone as landlord man. I imagine they/it got my address and the owners name from city public records

    • @hilburn-
      @hilburn- Рік тому +1

      Not necessarily, they have both of your phone locations as being in the same place repeatedly for an hour at a time - so they recommend based on that, because why would you be spending time with them if you weren't friends?

      @Charlie P i started therapy in 2020 so I've never actually met her in person. After that happened i checked my settings but the contacts data was still out there

      @@nebulan interesting. It's still possible they could put it together from other details (it's kind of scary what insights you can generate with enough raw data) but it's more likely then that your therapist has you as a contact than they are breaking their access allowances (purely because the amount of legal issues they could get into for that is astronomical)

    • @nebulan

      @Charlie P i think i had allowed contacts before and that she probably did. Like... they have it now idk. I've forbidden Facebook in this current phone.

    Just think about it: If someone was stupid enough to sell your data to someone else, that other entity could turn around and sell it to other people. And use it for their own benefit. If the major social sites (etc.) were collecting info to sell it, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot by giving you away to competitors who'd be using it to help drive them out of business. It is the data brokers whos business is selling info who collect data to sell it.

      You underestimate both human stupidity and the greedy need for instant gratification. Data that could be used against a company tomorrow is sold today so that the company has the cash *today.* Short-term gain is where it's at, for most big businesses's execs and shareholders. "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die."

    Never been happier since I dumped all social media (except YT, obviously 😉) five years ago. I don’t care about tracking/data farming - It is going to happen no matter what. It was simply not my jam and reactivating of apps I had thought I had gotten rid of fully. Even those shadow my shadows, but sure didn’t like the sliminess of SM apps randomly reinstalling apps. Angering
