“I have no idea how the fuck I’m going to do it, but I’m going to make you regret that.” - Skitter, Plague 12.6
Obviously I had to reread that whole section.
The most badass line at least in the novels I have read. And God I have read very large amount
@@bullymaguire5838 The scene I had to revisit over and over was similar. "Not a promise, not an oath, or a malediction or a curse... Inevitable."
@@gwamhurt "I told them. Warned them."
And shortly after this animation takes place, if memory serves, she took his head off and one of her soon-to-be bruisers smashed it with a brick. Repeatedly.
Mannequin left his head behind when he retreated.
This releases mass amounts of endorphins in my brain
*this one sparks lots of joy*
I've watched it way to many but also not enough times.
My favorite part is how well this captures the "Oh god no, an actual horror movie antagonist just showed up to kill us"
Followed by "OH FUCK THE BUG GIRL IS EVEN SCARIER" energy that permeates Worm
Haha accurate af
This is exactly what I was telling my friend. Seeing Taylor's tricks from an outside perspective is terrifying
Literal biblical swarm of insect as power is not too OP, just scary.
But, able to control all of the swarm individually is the most OP about Taylor and Queen Administrator.
@@Dashingsgod A favourite part was (trying to avoid major spoilers) the PR rep showing Taylor the video of herself, and what he says about her.
@@mattkennedy146 Yep... the funny thing is, that was all Taylor _playing nice._ If she actually went that direction and abandoned the restraint that comes from trying to be a good person she'd be so, _so_ much worse.
My favorite part is that Mannequin decides the knife grab was epic enough to not attack her while she was doing it.
Those are the rules. You never interrupt someone when they're having a badass moment.
Exactly, it's hardwired into the Shard's conflict drive, lol.
"Why is everyone suddenly looking to me for protection?"
"You beat Mannequin and stole his head, Skitter!"
"But... but he killed that doctor"
Arm, not his head. Plus, she had help from the big guy(think his name was Forrest or something like that).
@@ferrite1707 I could've sworn she stole his head. wasn't it mentioned when he met back up with the rest of the 9 that he didn't have his head?
@@ozzni1 Forrest helped her break the head with a lenght of rebar or concrete.
Head- broken
arm- stolen
ego- completely crushed
@@cara-setun Hotel: Trivago.
And remember, children: Skitter controls each one of those bugs individually.
Not quite, in gestation it says "My practice sessions, conducted away from prying eyes, told me I could direct a single insect to move an antennae, or command the gathered horde to move in formation. With one thought, I could single out a particular group, maturity or species from this jumble and direct them as I wished. An army of soldiers under my complete control." So, ur half right
@@LaikaTheTarnishedBeing Fair enough.
@@LaikaTheTarnishedBeingYeah technically it's QA controlling each one individually
Skitter can count all the things that dance on the head of a pin.
She put them there.
The only Mannequin Challenge that has ever mattered
Can't wait for the TikTok videos of people stuffing their guts into creepy puppets.
@@adaptationvfx could you do a animation of one of the endbringers like for example, the levathian after echo. Or you could echidna or crawler.
I plan to make them all eventually, but it'll take a while.
@@adaptationvfx Woah, this all feels unbelievable
@@johnnyfives5416 This song should totally be Leviathan's theme. It even shares his name! ua-cam.com/video/8WCTeWgNfDs/v-deo.html
Because she is the narrator you don't realize how Terrifying Skitter is to the observers, we do get some hints about how she appears to others here and there. But this animation *REALLY* shows just how imposing, terrifying and intimidating she is.
Seriously! In my mind, I was just thinking "Oh, yeah, bugs. Those are annoying, I suppose." That's because I have never seen a swarm this size in real life before. Seeing those bugs pour in was incredible
The alt view story from one of her underlings really sells how terrifying she is. As a PoV char it never comes out as much because she TRIES to be terrifying to not have to actually do the terrible things, but holy shit that chapter really shows us how the world sees her.
@@S2C8509 It's not until you see the sun get blotted out and the ground itself come alive that you realize just how many bugs she's controlling.
And that most poisonous bugs that aren't lethal to humans, aren't lethal in the amounts a single bug can produce. Thousands of them poisoning you at once? Different story
@@S2C8509 Indeed. Taylor is a walking, talking biblical plague, straight out of Exodus.
What's worse is that this is a scared, angry Taylor fighting something that wants to keep itself alive at all costs so it can make everything else hurt as much as possible
The only reason I'm not literally begging you to animate the entire battle is because it'd probably take years.
And it would still totally be worth the wait.
God I can't even imagine.
Also like, you'd need to put voice to it a little, have a larger suite of audio. Like, how do you make the sound of cement blocks on tinker alloy sound convincing?
@@adaptationvfx so how long until you release the movie series??
@@jbaker3381 I'll need at least a week
Imagine what the woman is thinking.
“Oh god I’m about to be killed by a puppet terminator!”
Door opens showing skitter
“Someone here? Hurray I’m saved!”
Swarm flies in.
“Oh god it’s even worse!”
More like "Oh thank God, the boss is here, that bastard's fucked."
"Thank god, it's Skitter!"
* Swarm flies in *
"Oh god, it's Skitter..."
@@dmitriisuvorov1930 Skitter wasn't known as "the boss" at that point in the story.
@@stripedgillette3580 She did claim the territory and was issuing commands to the people before Mannequin showed up.
@@stripedgillette3580 She wasn't really anyone's *boss* but she was already their warlord at that point.
It just now occurs to me that Taylor's ability is probably extraordinarily difficult to animate
That depends on how you do it. There's ways to have swarms of things but really only animate 2-4 objects. But the more complicated stuff? yeah that gets harder, especially if you need detail.
and god help anyone who would animate it bug by bug.
This Short has more polygons than the entirety of RE 1
Not toooo bad. There are lots of tools for doing particles, but the physics can be finicky and involve a lot of trial and error, especially if the swarms need to interact with anything (like sword-arms). Also it's a real RAM hog.
People mention it all the time on the reddit. Hard for the designer, even harder for the computer
I’m sure there’s ways around it, doesn’t hurt that it’s a black mass so things are harder to pick out the details and things in the dark make it harder for the viewers to make out details as well
One of my favorite subtle moments here is the way skitter dodges the chain shot at her head. The angle of her head and the speed at which she reacts makes it so clear she saw it coming from her swarm sense rather than actually seeing it. A really subtle showing of just how powerfully her swarm sense augments her situational awareness.
Yeah. One of my favorite lines was from grue's Interlude
She wasn’t in costume. It was odd, seeing her approach from a distance, observing her uninterrupted over a longer span of time. She conveyed an eerie kind of confidence that he knew she didn’t have at her core. Some of that was how she unflinchingly looked forward. She didn’t react as the wind blew her hair across her face, didn’t turn to look around the street as she crossed an intersection.
@@DeepFriedFrenz112 I love when she's watching the security footage of herself and doesn't even remember casually moving out of the way of stuff in her swarm.
0:49 There’s also here, where, in the same frame that Mannequin’s swinging down, she’s reaching up _into_ the shot to block and deflect.
I don't think I have the words to convey how cool this is.
Everything from the animation to the camera work to the music choice to the accurate whirlwind spinning to the swarms to the entrances of both Mannequin and Skitter. Every part is so well done and it all comes together so perfectly.
Thanks so much!
@@adaptationvfx You don't know how many times I come back to re-watch this. I've mostly relied on artwork to properly visualize Worm, but this is just so much more and incredible. I cannot wait to see more.
Though I dread to witness Khepri at Gold Morning.
@@Voidthedeathbringer5 As did everyone else, up to and including Golden Boi.
Hollywood can't do this.lmao praise be to the fans.
Just absolutely stellar. This is what fighting Skitter should look like.
I found the web-pass of her knife to be an especially well-done moment; I can’t imagine how long it must have taken to get it just right.
So long
Man that Swarm is absolute nightmare fuel, I love it
Yeah, it captures Skitter perfectly.
Top class supervillain. And she wondered why people were scared of her bugs lol
She saw the bugs as an extension of her and she had such a low opinion of herself that she couldn't see how anyone would be afraid of her.
At least towards the beginning. After taking out lung twice, cutting off part of an enemy's foot, facing down several of the S9, and packing bugs in another person's eye sockets, she could admit that she could be a little intimidating.
@@ferrite1707
Just a little…
God if she could see things from our perspective.
@@babdreemer imagine if she deliberately tried to terrify the fuck out of people. She is literally a walking biblical plague who could have her bugs strip people down to their bones in minutes. Legit nightmare fuel.
The animation of the swarm and swarm clones is simply phenomenal.
Skitter is giving me serious 'winter soldier' vibes at the end, and the way you had the spiderwebs on the knife as her swarm flew it back to her was just *chef's kiss*.
My favorite part!
God this must have taken longer than it took Tattletale to finally get Coil
Holy shit, just-
The little yank when she takes the dagger and-
The clones rising and-
Mannequin being the one saying "Please stop, you're scaring me-" and
*Holyshit*
Taylor arriving to the words "Goddamn right, you should be scared of me" is just too appropriate.
I always found it really hard to envision Taylor’s swarms as something terrifying because I always imagined them as too sparse or just always there, as it is from her POV. It doesn’t help that there aren’t many uses of controlled or directed swarms in movies. You’ve captured it perfectly!
You should reread the part where director what’s-his-face tells her how if someone told him she was a part of the S9 he wouldn’t be surprised
@@provoidcloak Glenn Chambers wasn't a Director, he was head of PR for the Protectorate.
Yeah, it took a while for me to get a sense of how fucking dense these clouds of bugs must be if they can carry objects like knives and bottles of disinfectant.
Taylor tends to play it down a bit and in a lot of fights shes seems to "run out" of bugs so quickly it makes her swarms feel sparse. The only dirext indications you get otherwise are Kid Win(or ClockBlocker?) saying "So many fucking bugs"
@@provoidcloak isn't there that 'the mummy' remake where there's a big swarm at some point?
This just made my day. I never expected to ever see anything from Worm animated, much less this fight in particular, and certainly not so well. Mannequin is one of the most interesting villains in the story from a visual perspective, and seeing freaking Skitter animated with such high quality is amazing.
Holy. Fucking. SHIT!
Now that... is Taylor Hebert.
And the raw MENACE and HORROR of Mannequin is so fucking well executed. Well fucking done!
On the one hand, I love it because it is so well animated and choreographed according to the actual fight.
On the other hand I hate it because there's so little time to enjoy it.
That moment, right at the end, is a perfect reminder that, for all _Being Taylor Hebert Is Suffering_ is a meme in the fandom, at no point in the story does Taylor ever actually _lose._
She may have setbacks and adjust her goals accordingly but nobody, from Alexandria to Zion, _ever_ managed to actually defeat her in a heads-up confrontation.
Leviathan would like a word with you
@@Monstyrtrix She may have gotten wrecked, but she lived and she managed to stall the thing long enough to save the shelter. She accomplished her goal, which makes it a victory, and lived to tell about it, which is an optional extra.
@@Just_A_Dude What about Bonesaw? They all lose so completely that Grue has to double trigger to save them. Unless I'm forgetting something and she was able to get out on her own before/during that situation.
They all lost to Behemoth as well. If Scion hasn't shown up, that would have been the end of a lot of people.
@@walter01 Never said she didn't have some assists... hell, she'd have died her first night out against Lung if not for the Undersiders... but she _did_ get out of those situations intact.
Burnscar?
Because I can't see many people say it, Skitter's costume is so good. From the modelling videos I know you use art as reference, and you really made the best rendering of Skitter possible I think. She's intimidating and badass and unexpressive behind the mask... [thumbs up]
Awesome to hear, thanks!
Agreed! This is the best Skitter I've seen hands down. Nailed her from the description!
I really like how the Mannequin is made and animated. Especially his unhuman movements. Before this video, I assumed that he looked more like a cultist from Endless Legend.
The only gripe I have with mannequins movements in this is that he does feel a little too human...the impression I got from reading is that he moves more like aderanged cross between Voldo(SOul Calibur) and a puppet without strings, Walking on the ends of blades, skittering like a spider, wobbling and deceptively "off balance" until he moves in for the kill.
I recognize trying to animate something like that would be an utter nightmare, so I find this to be satisfactory
YOOOOOO seeing Skitter from the outside makes her so much more terrifying than even Mannequin (who’s like one of the scariest characters in the story) lmao. Nice work!!
I always felt mannequin was kinda the weak link of slaughterhouse. The only reason he beat Armsmaster is because he attacked while he was crippled and nearly completely unarmed, his armor was damaged by a guy with a rock, and he doesn't have Jack's ability to guarantee a favorable match up. He's certainly dangerous, but compared to the rest he's a bit of a wimp.
@@jahsiahandrews8510 I feel that. Aesthetically and emotionally though, he’s absolutely terrifying.
my first reaction was to say "I want this to be real" followed immediately by panicked backtracking
bwahah, I had the same reaction
Mannequin's entrance gives me all sorts of shivers. I mean, the whole animation is twelve kinds of awesome, but seeing that creepy doll walking onto the scene, right as the music rises, his footsteps pounding along with the drums...
Please don't stop. If you can pull off this sort of genius for the rest of Worm, you'll create a goddamn masterpiece.
Hell yeah! Skitter looks absolutely fantastic dude! Although she really gives me Winter Soldier vibes in that last shot xD
Such a lovable creeper
0:42 Love the little tilt of the head, as if even someone as twisted and psychotic as Alan Gramme can be made to go "WTF?" when confronted with an agitated Skitter. It's the little details that really makes this clip feel alive.
That was cool as shit. Every second of it was great.
The subtle opening
Mannequin's pacing in time with the music and his killing the cockroach
Skitter and THE SWARM
the swarmclones in animated glory
Mannequin fighting like goddamn General Grievous
Skitter's recovery
If I get a genie's lamp at least one wish is going to be to give you a whole goddamn studio and a deal with Widlbow, so you can make the whole series
The amount of effort that swarm carrying the knife alone must have taken is incredible
Unless there’s tools I’ve not heard about, the simple difficulty of animating swarms of bugs actually *doing* things (as opposed to just flying around) will be the biggest challenge to Worm animations
What makes this so cool to me is the fact that I remember reading this scene from Taylor's POV and how *terrified* she's been, desperately fighting for her life. But this clip made me realise how *badass* she really was. Incredible.
Perfectly captured Mannequin's stilted gait. The atmosphere is incredible. Great job!
This song matches the influence of the passenger perfectly.
I really like the little puddles of water at the entrance of the building, it really shows Leviathan’s influence over Brockton Bay and how they aren’t recovered at all from the Endbringer, let alone ready for the upcoming disaster’s.
Some of the comments here are talking about how people are just more terrified after all the bugs show up instead of being relieve someone is there to save them, and I'm just getting Hellsing Abridged "Hooray it's the Catholic Church- OH NO IT'S THE CATHOLIC CHURCH" vibes
Magnificent work all around.
The choice of song is masterful in the poetic connotations that can be figured out between some of the lyrics and themes regarding Taylor in Worm.
I'm bigger than my body - Taylor's power forcing her awareness to expand encompass a space far larger than herself.
I'm colder than this home - Literally pushing away her emotions to remain cool and collected.
I'm meaner than my demons - Eventually murdering her powers' own semi-omnipotent progenitor.
I'm bigger than these bones - The responsibilities she takes on, the reach of the consequences of her actions are far beyond the scope of expectation from a teenager.
And all the kids cried out, "Please stop, you're scaring me" - The villainous persona she adopted, Her nightmare-fuel power.
I can't help this awful energy - The ahards' constant push towards conflict, the f***ed up state of the Earth Bet.
God damn right, you should be scared of me - All of Worm. As most of Taylor's enemies learned.
Who is in control? - Who's at fault for Taylor's relentless escalation? She or the shard egging her on?
Pretty much how I saw it. I'm not even really a fan of Halsey but this song just worked on every level.
I almost cried reading your comment. Ypu said this so beautifully
The lyrics also could refer to Mannequin...
I'm bigger than my body - He's a bunch of organs inside a mechanical shell
I'm colder than this home - Kind of self explanatory, even Bonesaw sees Mannequin as isolated and unreachable among the S9
I'm meaner than my demons - He became a serial killer who hunts tinkers, especially those who could make the world a better place because the hopekiller corrupted him. He's trying to be worse than the hopekiller herself, snuffing out all signs of light.
I'm bigger than these bones - His bonelike armor doesn't contain him, he's got extendable limbs and a shotgun arm.
And all the kids cried out, "Please stop, you're scaring me" - Speaks for itself
I can't help this awful energy - Driven mad by the Simurgh and his shard dancing along with Jack Slash's tune.
God damn right, you should be scared of me - All of Worm. But Mannequin on a terror attack is fitting.
Who is in control? - Is it Mannequin? Sphere? His shard? Jack Slash? Simurgh?
This is beautiful, as is the connection to mannequin. God damn I love this fan base.
The way you animated Mannequin made me contextualize him in my head, cause I always saw him moving about as a normal human would, just 9 feet tall. But the fact you made him like a puppet just makes him even more freaky.
I don't know if it was in the story originally and I missed/forgot it, but still nice work.
Best portrayal of Skitter EVER.
This is one of Taylor's most badass moments.
"I have no idea how the fuck I’m going to do it, but I'm going to make you regret that."
Mans even added the spider webs on the weapons. crazy. HBO needs to hire you all. Dont let them G.O.T this!
I can’t get over how you captured Mannequin’s body flailing around like a rag doll when he fights. It’s so deliciously disconcerting how his limbs don’t move like you’d expect a human’s to move. The way his head turned 180° to look at Taylor 👌👌👌
Your previous animations were already amazing, but this is a new level. Jawdropping
Thanks!
there's tears in my eyes. 7 f...ing years and one of my wish has come true.
I have watched this SO many times. It's just so smooth. Doesn't hurt the song fits pretty dang well, but the sounds of Mannequin's spikes hitting really make it perfect. Really freaking incredible. The swarm-clones look so cool too. Just... wow. Thank you for all the work you put in and for sharing!

That is Taylor "Would shoot a child" Hebert. Yup. A+ work!
A full series adaptation of parahumans Worm would be the dream!!
It'd have to be a super high budget one. I don't want to see any halfass shit.
Hopefully when worm eventually gets released in book form there will be an uptick of interest, and we will finally get more attention and an adaptation.
I’m watching this again before re-reading 12.6
She was thinking if she should name her attacks during this fight like a shonen hero.
Before now, I have never been able to visualize Skitter that well. This made everything so much better and really showcases how terrifying she is. I would seriously pay money for more shorts from critical moments in the series. Very well done, thank you for sharing.
Poor Mannequin, a man twisted beyond recognition.
I think one of my favorite parts about this is that Mannequin's steps synch with the beat of the music.
Good lord, this is amazing.

I didn't even know there was a Worm side of UA-cam.
Holy shit. Taylor here commands a massive presence that we barely see in the serial. This is like watching Godzilla fight King Kong; you're not sure who you'd rather see come out on top.
This almost makes me think it'd be impossible to make a Worm film from Taylor's perspective and still make it clear that she's the _protagonist_. While reading, we see everything from her perspective and we see her as simply a person, and it diminishes how absolutely terrifying she looks from outside. In a film, we would see from outside first and foremost.
Yeah, there are some pretty serious issues with it, especially because every single time we see her from an outside perspective in an Interlude, it's basically this. "Hand or Knee."
I think that's partially intentional.
Cause like Taylor doesn't understand why people treat her the way they do.
She forgets she's basically a nightmare incarnate and so terrifying the PRT literally just decided to classify her across the board as a "don't fuck with without serious backup" threat.
I've watched this at least once a day since it came out and I don't see myself slowing anytime soon. You nailed so many small things so perfectly.
The music is on point and syncs up perfectly
Mannequin's slow walk to the people is perfect. You can see how jittery and shakey it is, just like it's described, but it's also really subtle.
The bug clones were done well, really showing how it was impossible to tell which one she is.
I also really liked the shot of her standing there, framed in the bright doorway, and then the bugs swarmed in, blocking out the light. Beautiful.
But hands down my favorite part was the very end. The animation of her pulling down to grab her knife from her swarm? It's so fucking good. It's smooth, it's realistic, and it somehow characterizes her really really well.
Holy. Shit.
This looks amazing!
This is amazing. No it is more than that this is god tier stuff. Skitter and Mannequin are just so well crafted and both are just so terrifying in different ways. Watching this really helps explain why everyone in canon was just so afraid of her. She is terrifying. And Mannequins unusual way to move is just creepy but in the best way possible. This was pure art. I absolutely 100% love it. It's the best!
Thanks! Yeah they're both nightmares of a different sort.
Huh.... So that's what a fangasm feels like.
Oh that wasn't just cool. It was freaking incredible.

My mental view of this world is slowly changing

Praises, you deserve them all.
The 'S' in S-Class stands for Skitter
Absolutely incredible- insanely impressive, and though one could point out things that are rough around the edges in the rest of the video, I think that the shot of Taylor grabbing the knife is nearly perfect. That moment looks straight out of an actual professional adaptation of worm, maybe better
It's one dude that did this. He could probly fix those 'rough edges,' but once you finish one, you see another... and it keeps going. You just have to call it at some point
@@Dashingsgod I agree with that 100%- there's really no way to make it perfect, and I think it's astonishing that he managed it on the final shot. Even the parts with those "rough edges" are absolutely stunning
I don't know how you made the atmosphere so perfectly -- across Worm there must be hundreds of instances where you could find a woman lying on cement with her throat cut-- but somehow I could tell immediately that this was the warehouse and therefore mannequin fight. This is outstanding.
Thanks!
Man, I always felt so anxious reading this. Originally I pictured mannequin as being severed limbs each encased in clear material. After the description finally got through to me, I didn't feel any less disturbed. The whole slaughterhouse 9 arc deserves to go down as one of the best pieces of horror fiction ever written. These animations are great, but I can't even watch the locker given how repulsive it is. Kudos to whoever made these being able to remind me how disturbing it was the first time.
Despite everything I still think I’d be more terrifying of the giant, mannequin with knifes for hands
This might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen
It really returned me to the time i first read the book. Amazing work.
Damn!! Just, Damn!
Looks just like the scene was described.
This was the thing that pushed me to re-read Worm for like the 15th time. On 11.4 now. Hasn't lost any of its luster, just as good as the first time I read it.
God. I want an animated series based on worm so bad. Shows like The Boys are proof that audiences could handle the violence and subtext. But the world building and character design on the Parahuman universe is unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. An untapped well of perfect story telling.
Lord almighty, seeing any of Worm animated to this degree makes me a very very happy man
0:45 to 0:49 captures exactly why she has ratings in Mover, Stranger, Shaker, Breaker, Blaster, Changer, and Striker in addition to the much more obvious Thinker and Master.
That is an absolutely fantastic choice of song, especially how you used the timing of Skitter's horror movie style appearance on screen on the same beat as the word "me" to completely flip the direction of who the lyrics were suggesting people should be afraid of. Not to mention how you *left* the lyrics about writing the villains in your head just before the video starts, making it into this delightful bit of meta. And how the lyrics *in* the video are probably the best around to describe Skitter. The animation is fantastic, but the editing in concert with the music absolutely deserves praise too.
Thanks for the breakdown, in planning this scene I was delighted with just how perfectly the song worked on every level.
Goosebumps. Goosebumps eveeywhere.
Incredible! Awesome work, man.
Thanks dude, appreciate you stopping by!
you absolutely nailed mannequins mannerisms perfectly!
The animation is amazing. Especially those initial few seconds when it's a single shot, I can't imagine the amount of work. But the music is just beyond perfect. It perfectly captures Taylor and her innate vulnerability which is simultaneously her strength [I'm meaner than my demons]. Sensory and thematic perfection.
Thanks so much!
