- A has-been rock star hosts horror films in his haunted mansion. Guest: filmmaker Jason Ragosta. Movie: "The Night Stalker" from 1972.
Episode 08-379 Air Date: 03-23-2024
Set against the neon-lit backdrop of the Las Vegas Strip, "The Night Stalker" weaves a gripping tale of mystery and suspense. When a string of bizarre murders leaves the city gripped with fear, veteran reporter Carl Kolchak stumbles upon a theory that challenges the boundaries of belief: the murderer might be a vampire. As Kolchak delves deeper into the case, his dogged pursuit of the truth brings him into conflict with both his skeptical editor and the authorities. Determined to prove the unimaginable, Kolchak's investigation leads him on a dangerous path to confront the very essence of terror. This made-for-television horror film combines elements of suspense and horror to create a compelling narrative that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, without revealing the dark secrets that lie at its heart.

The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Supernatural all owe everything to Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
AMEN !! 🎉🙇 💐
X-Files is more of influence by the Twilight Zone, Buffy has other influences like My So-Called Life. Take your point though.
@@borednow5838 Incorrect. Chris Carter, the creator of The X-Files, said many times in interviews that his primary inspiration for The X-Files was Kolchak: The Night Stalker. That's why he repeatedly tried to have Darren McGavin guest star on The X-Files, and McGavin said that he wouldn't do it unless Carter came up with a new character for him to play because he didn't want to do Kolchak again, and Carter created the role of X-Files founder and former FBI agent Arthur Dales for McGavin instead. The Twilight Zone had almost no influence on The X-Files because it was an anthology series. Also, Joss Whedon created Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the late 1980s, and the Buffy movie with Kristy Swanson came out in 1992, before My So Called Life even existed.
@@44excalibur Oh true I just find more of a link to the Twilight Zone, but fair enough.
@@borednow5838 The X-Files did try to infuse the stories with some social commentary and moral allegory, similar to Rod Serling's work on The Twilight Zone, but the monster-of-the-week format with two central protagonists is closer to Kolchak.
Darren McGavin was wonderful in these roles. I don't know how he didn't get to be a big star and make tons more of these kinds of movies.
Kinda sux this series didn't get more hype, magical thinking comes and goes with uncertainty of the future, superstition stocks were down at that time.
The night stalker series every week was great too. I loved it growing up
One of the greatest made for TV horror movies ever. Inspired many shows from X-Files, Buffy, etc over the decades. A must watch for genre fans. One of the iconic characters in Karl Kolchak aka " Seeker of the truth"...the original Fox Mulder. A lot of fun, tense entertainment.
Underrated classic.
Top notch horror film, better than most cinema releases then and now.
Night Strangler is awesome as well.
Ah, Kolchak was such a fun part of my teen years back then.
I love Darren McGavins voice and narration. This film is a 10/10 for me.
Brilliant... I've got the whole collection on my Lappy. Never get tired of watchin 'em!👌🏼
YES!!! I just finished marathoning the two movies and the series. This'll be a good one! Not that they're not all good, of course... 🙂
I wish they still made movies like Kolchak. I love these old movies.
The night strangler was another great one!
Fantastic movie. Yes, a bit cheesy but God do I love watching it! Darren McGavin is outstanding in this role. He understood the mission.
Barry Atwater, who played the vampire Janos Skorzeny, also played the legendary Vulcan philosopher Surak in the original Star Trek series episode, 'The Savage Curtain.'
Also Chuck Connors name in the TV series werewolf
@@lynch6642 Yep, the Fox Network series Werewolf reused that name for Chuck Conners' character.
He was a very good character actor. Was originally an instructor at UCLA in sound design and later the dept. head. First time acting was as an amateur in a student film titled, "A Time Out Of War" set during the US Civil War. Just three characters. He played Craig. Film won the Oscar for best amateur short.
It's a shame it only lasted one season... The intro and theme song were really cool.
Ohhhh The dad from A Christmas Story handles a "Fragile" case of epic proportions!
How many times we seen this movie. But I am here. ha i got the deal. Who an how many are watching the night stalker tonight? Beside's me?
My father was the principal of the high school that Darren McGavin attended in Northern California.
I freaking LOVED this show when I was a kid.
You should like it more now since you're growing
Holy cow! FANTASTIC CHOICE!!!!
Can’t wait! LOVE The Night Stalker series!
I remember when this aired, so many people at my school were talking about it the next day it was so cool.
YEARS before Agent Scully we had Carl Kolchak. This movie is absolute perfection, and a real rarity in that it was ACTUALLY quite scary for a TV movie. True, the series that followed went WAY beyond BAD, but I still have a soft spot for all of those cheesy monsters. RIP, Darren McGavin!
*Special Agent Mulder.
Really great copy of The Night Stalker. Thanks for showing this old favorite. Stay creepy.
I have the whole Night Stalker dvd collection. Lol
Me too! The show is so great. It's streaming on Peacock now too!
Nice!
This movie is soooooo 70's. Love this old movie. 😊
So many great character actors in this movie. John Carradine, Simon Oakland, Claude Akins, etc.
There is a great vampire episode of McCloud w/John Carradine
I love Kolchack!
Great movie and I used to watch the night stalker series on TV every week also . One of my favorites ❤
These shows are priceless…. Imo
This was the most successful made for TV movie at the time.
Really liked the show as a kid !!
I was 10 when this movie came out, loved it!...and yes it scared me. Watched the show too!
Awesome 👏🏻, this is the best movie 🎥 🍿 that you guys have played in months.
See you Saturday night.
A great classic film. Don't miss this one!
I loved this show when I was a kid!
Yeah Darren McGavin was awesome actor
“Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”-Friedrich Nietzsche.
Great movie tonight 👍! I bet Sally skellington is writing in her dream journal tonight as she does every weekend! Dear dream journal i saw Livingston tonight! And he looked at me! Oh dream journal someday👩🏻🦰🧛🏿♂️💍💒🍺🍻🍷🍷🍾🥂🥂🥰🥰!
A very significant show on so many levels! Revitalizing so many classic horror creature features! Giving shows today a hard run for the money as far as writing is concerned in my opinion!
And soundtrack. Very hip.
No one but the late great Mr. Darren McGavin can play the Night Stalker.
Great Movie, the series didn't last long enough.
This is going to be AWESOME!!!! So excited!
Loved this show , and the actor ! Looking forward to this one.
I've been enjoying the various incarnations of "Creature Features" for many decades and am very happy to find this new one on UA-cam!
Thank you to the cast & crew at the Mansion for a great time! ⚘
What you are going to watch tonight is, in my opinion, one of the greatest films ever made. Then try to tell yourself, it couldn't happen here.
Great movie.
Great guest.
As always, thank you, Creature Features, for a wonderful weekend.
I loved these when they came out. I still love to watch a good clean scary yarn. Thanks for posting.
Same! ❤
Very cool movie "The Night Stalker". Vincent, Tangella, Mr. Livingston and Guest host Jason Ragosta were all wonderful on Creature Features!
One of the best vampire movies ever IMHO
It's Larry Linville playing one of the doctors performing the autopsy on the first victim! He played a doctor on several occasions, most famously Dr. Frank Burns on MASH. After his death in 2000, Larry Linville's ashes were scattered at sea off the coast of Bodega Bay (Source: Wikipedia).
The difference between the series and this movie are the production values. Also, Darren McGavin played Carl Kolchak just a little more straight in this movie. He goes a little more camp in the series.
Surprisingly high quality filmmaking considering the budget.
The 70s cheese made to look natural. Costume and set design had it goin' on. Groovy.
All of the Kolchak movies are great, but this is the original and the best one.
I love all things Horror. I used to watch Creature Features on Saturday nights on WGN Chicago back in the 70,s. Wow you bring back Great memories.
Me too...lived in NW Indiana...was a kid in the 60s and 70s...parents wouldn't let us watch Creature Features until we were 10 years old 😂
I watched it in the south burbs and the picture of the old guy scared the hell out of young me.
NW Suburbs..... nobody is mentioning Dark Shadows and Dan Curtis. The music in this show is the same by Robert Cobert.
One of my favorite shows nigh stalker seen them all ❤️
I'm wish everyone good health.
What an excellent cast of solid character actors !
Simon Oakland, Claude Akins, Ralph Meeker, and the future Frank Burns (Larry Linville)
Another great one! Thank you Creature Features!! ❤🎉❤🎉👍
This is one great movie.
Love Kolchak
Somewhere on a shelf in the basement I still have the DVD box set of the full series. Haven't watched it in years - but it was good nostalgia to watch the premiere episode here again. I watched every episode as a kid and still remember the impact the show had back in the 70s. And I recall hearing it was the inspiration for Chris Carter's X-Files. Maybe I should go dig out that box set and have a marathon.
Sounds like a plan
And Mcgavin appears on a X-Files episode!
@@robertcoggeshall3071 Yep, he did.
*Darren McGavin* was paranormally perfect as intrepid investigative reporter *Carl Kolchak!* This TV movie about a vampire serial killer in 1970s Las Vegas is also paranormally perfect for *Creature Features!📺💀* Keep it creepy!
Yesssss !!! Finally !!! I can’t wait I’m excited 😮
I have all the TV series on DVD and this movie is great brings me back into the 70s again❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I still love this series. The movie is so great.
One of the Best TV movies of the 70s. Plus the charm of my favourite hosts.
They don't make reporters like Kolchak, anymore!! Wish they would have updated and made this series with the same tempo and great characters.
I can't believe I was only 20 when this came out. I loved that tv show and this movie.
The early 1970s was a strange time. Lots of books, movies and TV shows were about the paranormal. In fact, certain religious sects were condeming these things and urging young people to burn books and rock albums that even featured these things.
Me too
I loved the series when I was a kid. No wonder I also loved the X-Files, when it arrived. However, I don’t think I’ve seen this movie. Thanks Vincent and Tangella!
I luv'ed the TV series tooo 📺
Just found yall. My daughter laughs at me, but i enjoy the shows put out in my youth. I never knew of some of these so i am glad to see them now, with basic stories, no CGI, and without over the top antics.
Thank you.
I still love this, I saw it when it first aired. I was 11
Thanks Creature Features for Another Great Movie Night. Keep up The Amazing Work. See ya again this coming Friday and Saturday 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍🏻
💯 Keep'm coming 👍👍 your all awesome 🙂
Best scene, fight, flight from hospital. Gets better every time
Nothing like the sound of 70’s horror!
I found it sad that they couldn't let Kolchak get a girlfriend. They took her away with prejudice at the end of this episode. Just plain mean.
I wish movies were still made like this. CGI ruined horror for me.
i agree
@@Virginia22793 💯💯💯
Another fave ❤ i like darren
They ran him out of town under the threat of a murder charge. Love the obvious '71 Las Vegas footage when this was filmed- they ain't nothing there compared to now, on the Strip. The scene near the beginning when they discover the second victims body on a bed of smooth silted dirt (pre-concrete pour for one of the earliest storm channels for the infamous Flamingo Wash) just west of the strip. As they're peering together with Kolchak snapping pics, in the background at varying times, (looking east towards the strip) from left to right, one can see the Sands high rise, then the Holiday Inn high rise, the original Caesars Tower (Roman) and the Centurian Tower, before picking up the Dunes tower. My 'hood' back then as I lived with my father literally on the Strip. ('67-73)
This is now, as it was when I first saw it when it originally premiered in '72, a fantastic movie, spawning the very cool cult classic "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" ... the 'Old Man' rules! ;)
I was looking forward to this episode. Thanks.
This is the second time I've watched "The Night Stalker" here on Creature Features and let me tell ya - it's always a surprise! The guests are special with interesting history tales and future projects along with the antics of our beloved Tangella and cast. Special thanks to the cast and crew who work hard to bring you these shows each week and to my friend, Spooky Boo Rhodes. I wish you all a very safe and happy week ahead. With love - see ya all next week :)!
I agree. Happy Sunday to you
@@kimpaff5443 All the Best Kim :)
We love ya, Janet.
@@troyhickman4904 :)!
This wasn,t bad ..being in the uk id never heard of Kolcheck, not sure if it aired here but would have been too young.. but know Darren Mcgavin from other things . ....the best tv movie about vampires IMHO is Salems Lot...the full length was split over 2 nights when it aired in the UK in the late 70s I was 11 years old and was allowed to stay up and watch with my older brothers.....proper freaked us out.....Vampires in a modern setting ....was the talk of the schoolyard I can tell you...still love it after 40+ years.....
Oh boy! You might enjoy Kolchak: The Night Stalker, a short lived series that carries Kolchak into similar adventures. It's on Amazon and elsewhere, some episodes on UA-cam. One of my favs! Darren McGavin plays his same role and imho it is excellent for the time.
Salem's Lot...one of my all times favorites...scary af when Danny Glick floats up to the widow!! I still to this day cover my windows at night when I'm alone! 😂🤯😱🫣😰🧛
This tv show and Blacula caused me to develop asthma, because I slept with the covers over my head. That being said, this is one of the best shows that has ever been made.
The shot at the 12:48 mark, of the hard hat wearing heavy equipment operator standing with clenched fists and looking down at the dead girls body? Two possible reasons; first, he could literally shitting his pants over the gruesome find, and this tension has manifested itself via his hands. Second, that smooth bed of sand that the dead girl is laying on? He probably had just finished it the day before, and had it ready for the cement pour, only to discover this. (lol)
haven't seen this one since it was first aired back in the day
So you're old too? 😂
plan to ask my family to have a surprise funeral for me as a birthday party in the not too distant future. @@lifegood3322
great film
Yeah ! The Night Stalker 🌙 is still a good horror story t.v. show I enjoyed watching 👀 the reruns even today June 16th , 2024 😊.
I wonder what supernatural creatures Kolchak would investigate if it was ' The Day Stalker'. I'm sure it would be great just like 'The Night Stalker'. See you on saturday night!
Maybe someone would put him on Tangella's trail.
He'd be taking on Karens. They'd ask to speak to Tony Vincenzo...
Fckn classic!
Love this! The series was also great.
This is one of the best vampire movies ever made.
Yup
In honor of this, I will wear my pork pie hat (but don't be grossed out when the gravy drips down my face).
Nightstalker was my favorite show in the 70s . Its like Columbo crossed with Supernatural.
Darren McGavin was also in the TV series called, "Secret Agent Man", and the movie, "Hangar 18."
I used to watch reruns of this show on Sci-Fi and Netflix. I absolutely love Carl! I actually created a character for dungeons and dragons based on him. I thought rogue with a dip in ranger was the best choice. Point bring. This guy is one of my favorite TV characters ever. I still hum the theme song every now and then.
Great cast.
That was and still is my favorite movie. I wish we could see the reruns.
All on UA-cam
Great movie, thanks for showing this one again! I had no idea what to expect but since I was born in 1972 (a very good year😉) I gave it a shot and I’m glad I did, it was a very nice surprise. A great movie for 1972 - right through to 2072 if we’re still here!! 8/10🍿 🎥
I was born in 1963, watched this when it came out and never missed an episode after that! It was a great movie and tv series for its time.
Use to love Kolchak as a kid. Shocked that it only had 1 season. It just seemed like there was more. Also, I thought Jason was a great guest. Lastly, you guys mentioned BOC! Awesome! One of my all time favorite bands. Great job!
