After being a die-hard U2 fan since september 1980, knowing every song U2 ever performed or played and being a musician myself, I can finally say that this is the best U2 song ever. This one will make it to my funeral!
I remember buying The Joshua Tree. I had never been a U2 fan before. I listened to it over and over, clearly mesmerized. No matter how many times I listened to it I seemed to get more out of it than the previous time I listened. I talked to my mother about how the music spoke to me. My mother told me about "divine intervention". It stuck. The Joshua Tree was divine intervention. My mother lost her battle with brain cancer December 18,2013. I buried her today. After returning home from the cemetery, I played The Joshua Tree. Red Hill Mining Town reminded me of the lesson my mother had tried to teach me about God's undying love and purpose for loving each other. I needed that today.
unionmade82 in Joshua tree there are many songs with great and deep meaning. I realize the meaning of Exit a day before of their concert here in my.country
U need headphones to do his voice justice. For example "into the heart" "unforgettable fire" or my new favorite "in a lifetime" by Clannad (bono sang with enya's sis)
I want to hug you man! I was a war child at 10...somewhere in the world....politics and religion divide us....ain't fair ...all I want to do is live in peace and have respect and for people to do the same...why can't we ?? If a song can makes us feel humble then why can't we plant that in our hearts? ..... don't mind me... I've been drinking and smoking I'm rambling...excuse me. Peace and love be in your heart dude.
I can't help commenting; it's 2020 and Trump says coal is good and windmills cause cancer. The future of humanity is extremely bleak. But at least I lived to experience U2!
I can remember this song when it first came out. I had left home, quit high school and was sitting depressed in my dinky rathole apartment bedroom. I was blown away and immediately felt alive again. Thank God for U2! I don't care how many albums and super rock starred out they get I will love them 'til the day I die.
Bono's voice is absolutely amazing in this song as his voice always was back in the 80s not that he's a bad singer still, he still sounds very good for someone of his age and you can still instantly recognise his voice when he sings. With regards to what this song was about I believe it was about the English mining towns of the midlands and northern England and how they suffered when that cold hearted witch Maggie Thatcher closed them down and how the communities were ripped apart by it, even today a lot of these towns have still not recovered from it and people are still feeling the effects of what that nasty woman did to their towns and communities!
what an album...most of the radio hits are on side A, but side B makes the album. I was lucky enough to see the Joshua Tree tour in a packed old Cleveland Municipal stadium in a steady mist of rain. what I wouldn't give to re-live that night.
Always loved this album, great memories as a teenager in summer 86. Just recently I`ve rediscovered this track in particular. Its really current, very emotional ..... I think of it as my Dad who I live with, he`s 80 and my best mate. I`m preparing to miss him I suppose! Love it!
From father to son The blood runs thin Ooh, see the faces frozen (still) Against the wind. The seam is split The coal-face cracked The lines are long There's no going back. Through hands of steel And heart of stone Our labour day Has come and gone. They leave me holdin' on In Red Hill Town. See the lights go down on ... Hangin' on You're all that's left to hold on to. I'm still waiting I'm hangin' on You're all that's left to hold on to. The glass is cut The bottle run dry. Our love runs cold In the caverns of the night. We're wounded by fear Injured in doubt. I finally was able to hear one of my favorite U2 songs on Joshua Tree Tour and I was hysterical 😩. It was like listening to god himself! No one has a better falsetto voice than Bono! It was fucking breath taking and I’ll never forget it!!!!❤️❤️😭😭😭💕💕💕🤗🤗👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The B-side in general is overlooked. Side-A had the singles and one of the few albums in history to have that many anthem tracks in a row. I do love the whole album though. Exit is another overlooked song.
I loved this band all through HIGHSCHOOL. Even went to see them on Halloween at Dodger Stadium ( Larry Mullen's Birthday) the other bands were the Sugar Cubes, and Public Enemy. I have so much respect for them and their lyrics!
Never seen this video before , us ladies phew Bono porn looking into the camera 5.43 sultry sweaty masculine take me to bed eyes . Great video always loved this song , all the comments informative why it's never played live , I'm a huge U2 fan seen them play live many times over the decades .
I'm a completely straight guy, and Bono was sexy as heck back then. His eyes and energy screams passion, ardor, intensity, mixed with some spirituality and depth.
Played this to death. Half expect a faded and strained tape-sound halfway through the song. What a beauty, but, ironically not all that's left to hold on to.
It's difficult as a U2 fan not to love this video. It's an amazing song. Cheesey? Can't say that. But it is funny how Larry keeps beating away the entire video. The look on his face! Funny! I love these guys. The "Tree" is such an amazing album even 20 years later!
I'm perplexed by people hating on the video. It's 100% in sync with what the song is about and I can't see what's wrong with it, asthetically or thematically. In fact I think it fits the song perfectly. The Soviet-era Realist styling, the canary-in-a-coal-mine reference. The song is about Thatcher's assault on the livelihood of Welsh miners. Do people want some completely irrelevant pop video to accompany the song?
This is one of the greatest f****** rock bands that is I can't ever remember them not putting out bad music I mean ever since I was a kid I would listen to you too and I mean just awesome and actually see him in concert is even awesome
In loving memory of the 29 miners who lost their lives at the pike river mine. Great decision not to permanently seal the mine. Maybe one day we can bring the boys home and give them the burial they deserve. RIP the pike river 29.
They have never played this song live. They are playing the whole Joshua Tree album on the upcoming tour and it is the first time old U2 fans have a chance to see this song preformed.
I must mention that though they are claiming "all" of the songs, remember the have re-mastered them. Maybe a slight "re-mix" of the songs we have come to know? I have seen them play live over 60 times and have heard/watched "Streets..." played each one of those times. So I am curious of how this will be for this tour. Catching them in YVR and DUB. Vancouver for the opener and making the pilgrimage to Croake Park in Dublin.
Brilliant tune, one of if not the best by u2,always think of my old grandad when listening to this, spent 46 years down the pit, passed away april 05 aged 81
You, my friend, would possibly remember just a few years earlier, when MTV started up and they played a lot of U2 from the very beginning of both, U2 and MTV. Hooked from then on. Damn college was fun!
Red Hill Mining Town (Ville Minière De Red Hill) From Father to Son De père en fils The blood runs thin Le sang se raréfie See the faces frozen still Regarde les visages toujours gelés Against the wind Face au vent The seam is split La couture est dédoublée The coal face cracked Le visage plein de charbon se gerçait The lines are long Les rides sont profondes And there's no going back Et on ne peut pas revenir en arrière Through hands of steel Malgré des mains d'acier And a heart of stone Et un coeur de pierre Our labour day Notre jour de travail Has come and gone S'est terminé comme il était venu And you leave me holding on Et tu m'abandonne In Red Hill Town A la ville de Red Hill See the lights go down En regardant les lumières s'éteindre [Chorus] [Refrain] I'm hanging on Je m'accroche You're all that's left to hold on to Tu est tout ce qui me permet de tenir I'm still waiting J'attends toujours I'm hanging on Je m'accroche You're all that's left to hold on to Tu est tout ce qui me permet de tenir The glass is cut Le verre est brisé The bottle run dry La bouteille se vide Our love runs cold Notre amour devient froid In the caverns of the night Dans les cavernes de la nuit We're wounded by fear Nous sommes envahis par la crainte Injured in doubt Parcouru par le doute I can lose myself Je peux me perdre You, I can't live without Je ne peux vivre sans toi Yeah you keep me holding on Ouais tu me permet de tenir In Red Hill Town Dans la ville de Red Hill As the lights go down Quand les lumières s'éteignent [Chorus] [Refrain] And we scorch the earth Et nous desséchons la terre Set fire to the sky Mettons le feu au ciel We stoop so low Nous nous penchons si bas To reach so high Pour nous relevé si haut A link is lost Un lien est perdu The chain undone La chaine est brisée We wait all day Nous attendons tout le jour For the night to come Pour que la nuit arrive And it comes Et elle vient Like a hunter child Comme un enfant de chasseur [Chorus] [Refrain] Love slowly stripped away L'amour est lentement détruit Love has seen its better day L'amour a connu un meilleur jour I'm hanging on Je m'accroche The lights go down on Red Hill (X2) Les lumières s'éteignent sur Red Hill (X2) The lights go down on Red Hill Town Les lumières s'éteignent sur la ville de Red Hill The lights go down on Red Hill Les lumières s'éteignent sur Red Hill
This is THE song missing from their sets for years...one of the best U2 songs without question and his vocals are about as amazing as he could ever sing. Almost his sort of Nessum Dorma if you compare his incredible voice to Pavarotti...not too sure I get this video exactly...seems disjointed and not very well directed or even edited...but the song is incredible.
i agree 100 per cent ! this is the sleeper of all U2 songs. probably the best ever , with the exception of Moment of Surrender . no pretence . and the video is stripped down .
This was missing from their sets for years BUT one I still know all the words too! THIS WAS The 1st song I heard them EVER Do & I fell in love with ALL thé Band has done minus a few lol Heres to their reaching for nothing less than then Great
After more than 25 years...this is still my favorite record. Up there with KIND OF BLUE, SGT. PEPPER, ZOSO (Led Zepp. 4), Pearl Jam's TEN, WHAT'S GOING ON, HOTEL CALIFORNIA, THRILLER, LET IT BLEED, .....
I had this on a tape when it came out. My favorite memories of my teen years was blasting down the highway in my trusty Jeep with The Joshua Tree playing. I still listen to this on CD today. Definitely one of the greatest albums of the 80s.
as some may already know, canaries, due to their tiny fragility are extremely sensitive to toxins and cold draft among many other things...canaries were used back in the day to detect poisonous gases to protect minors, if the canary stopped singing the "alarm bells" would go off. my canary named "disorder" recently died. (name picked randomly from a dictionary) had him for 7 years. great singer....rip buddy
JoyIn Jesus take a fucking chill pill, reli freak. Theres nothing wrong with earning a lot of money.Instead of ranting on him, just try to compose 1 song. Only 1.
JoyIn Jesus Nothing that you have said is a fair reflection of the Christian message or of the person of Christ. I'm not a Christian myself but I find it sad when people use their "faith" to try to cover their dysfunction. Bono is a man. A great one at that. He's not perfect but he's definitely on the good side of average. U2 rules!
way back in the day...most of the members were church goers but that particular following (sect) were pressuring the newly formed band to either choose the church or rock-n-roll. I have a Christian friend who pointed out so many "angles" that can be taken as a Christian meaning/symbolism in many, MANY u2 songs. I even remember some writer who in a book reported that the band chose to go out and preach via the music to those who have not heard (also in scriptures) as opposed to staying in the church which is full of those who "have heard."
My favorite song on my favorite album, so powerful it almost brings tears every time i hear it. Every song on a the album was amazing. Never gonna see music be so good again. I'm opened minded , but find myself retreating back to music from the 80s and 90s because it was simply good music. Not disposable like today's music.
Not a very good video. One of my favorite U2 songs ever, though. With an odd story to boot... The fact that they chose to record the song in G meant Bono had to REALLY strain to hit the high notes. "You're AAAALL that's left to hold on to..." (High C's in case anybody cares...) This actually worked to the songs advantage because the physical pain in his voice ended up capturing the emotional pain in the lyrics PERFECTLY. (This is part of why the song hits the listener so hard.) The high key, however, also ended up being the reason why the band never performed the song live on the Joshua Tree Tour. Every attempt at the song in the pre-tour rehearsals would ruin Bono's voice completely. And here's the amazingly odd part: Rather than chickening out and playing the song in a lower "less desperate" key, they chose NEVER TO PLAY THE SONG AGAIN. EVER!!! In one sense this breaks my heart a little because hearing "Red Hill" LIVE would most likely be magical, on the other hand there is something very noble about the idea of "If you can't do it 100% then don't bother doing it at all." :- )
This makes perfect sense to me. I'm a HUGE U2 fan and a song writer(Brits-sponsored Songwriter of the Year semi-finalist six times..always a prince, never a King, eh) who chooses to discover and nurture NEW talent. About three years back i met a young lady who a friend had approached and sent to me as he thought there might be something decent somewhere in her vox...how right was he. Thing was, when i heard her sing, frankly i was a little disappointed. I felt, like a lot of women, she was singing way too deeply. It just wasn't working for me. We played around with one or two new compositions. Then something hit me. What if i were to experiment with her vocal. Mess around a little. She had a good voice but, like Bono's voice, i have always searched out and looked for "exceptional"(male or female). So i made a suggestion...."why not sing an octave higher"...THIS WENT DOWN WELL WITH HER. "are you serious??" she asked....... "why not, go for it!" i replied. ....and BOOOOOM!!!!....there it was...EXCEPTIONAL...., as she sang a verse and chorus of a song called BREATHE i'd written. Something, vocally special poured out of her..actually, if i'm honest it spewed forth out of her and my reaction was to shout out.."THERE IT IS..RIGHT THERE!!!" and i actually threw my pen across my table. Interestingly she got up and started to pack her guitar away and went into my kitchen for a few minutes. I wondered what she was playing at and went into the kitchen, only to discover her weeping...she was overwhelmed. Then, after a few minutes of "christ, what have i done to her", she told me, the reason she packed her guitar away was because she assumed after years of rejection, she thought i'd thrown my pen out of frustration at somebody NOT being able to hold a tune. HOW WRONG WAS SHE!...later i found out that those tears were more to do with self discovery. Basically, this higher vocal had caught her out and this was the first time SHE had heard HER REAL VOICE. Now, the reason i write this is because of what you said about how singing certain songs out of range and a lot of singer can either ruin the voice for a gig or just plain ruin the voice. Now when this young lady records, we practice/rehearse our songs in her old, deeper voice and then press the record button on the "exceptional" vocal....and recording it tough for her voice..but worth it for the results. Trust me, it's mind-blowing when this chick plays "live", which has only happened three times so far...and the reaction of three gigs, all with 100 folk has been open-mouthed. Don't get me wrong, i'm not making a Bono-comparison here...if you want proof that this young lady is flying, google JASMINE LAMPORT "BREATHE"(SONIC FOXX VERSION) and also listen to WHY? and STRONG......her embryonic likes to dislikes are mostly in the high 90's(%-wise)....she WILL be popular. .....and Jasmine is both streaming and selling songs. By the way, THE JOSHUA TREE...my favourite album, ever...Jack Savoretti's BETWEEN THE MINDS is a close second and SATURDAY SUN'S album ORIXE is a close third.....Alex Hedley(right up there with Bono)..should be as he was once managed/discovered by a dude who used to arrange U2's publicity in the early days..FACT.
Wookiee Warrior Oh man, sorry but I just never that much got into Achtung. It's all subjective, but I just don't like the heavy electronic music. But, I LOVE this band.
Dimestore Philosopher This album kind of grew on me..at the beginning was a little wierd..but as i started to listen more and more..suddenly the beauty of it hit me
WOW. I have been a U2 fan nearly my entire adult life (since 1983) but I have NEVER seen this video, even after seeing a gazillion JT "era" photos of the boys. This is a revelation, love it! Bono was at peak JT humina humina! ;-D
WOW. 1st U2 album I ever bought. Never seen the clip before but its a gem . That guitar could cut a hole through a tornado!! Rock on . This is magic. " We Scorch the earth , set fire to the sky we wait all day for the night to come and it does. " Classic structure.
My son Joshua was born on January 29th 1989. Gu were his name came from? So proud and still going because they've changed their music with the times. Who else as ever done that? I guess u could say Madonna but come on.
@fireballpip I agree. I think its a beautiful song and the video compliments it. I noticed some viewer comments project a negative, often homophobic weirdness onto the video and I just wanted to push back on that commentary. I like the video very much because of Bono's emotional performance.
No importa si eres musulmán,cristiano, católico, evangélico o protestante...este grupo no conoce ni distingue religión alguna...el mensaje de su música nos llega a todos de una u otra forma... deseó y anheló larga vida a U2.!!!
I've seen them 17 times, never been disappointed. Although Achtung Baby is my personal #1, JT is my solid #2. In 86-91, worked at BASF in Wyandotte, MI. Lived on an Island near Detroit. Grosse Island, on the water. Great times... Not a care in the world!!!
Brilliant, Rich! I've seen them twice, 1987 Joshua Tree, and a just a few months ago in San Francisco, in a huge parking lot at the Cow Palace. Better than ever! Achtung Baby is also my #1, but I've been listening to a ton of JT since the concert. And even REALLY old stuff like "Gloria" and "I Will Follow."
Tom Dunlap I'm also in agreement. Achtung Baby was literally my favorite and still is. Not a bad track on the entire album. I was going through some old stuff the other week and discovered that I owned it on both cassette and then CD. Yes, I'm getting old. I also own most of the tracks on my iPhone from that album. It's funny to me how many people idolize Joshua tree over everything else that they did. That one is my third favorite after All that you can't leave Behind. Another brilliant and underrated album.
Excellent, Cameron. I'm listening to this one tonight, "All That You Can't Leave Behind." Looks like I will miss them on this 30-year-anniversary JT tour in the spring. The San Francisco sold out. I checked the LA prices, which are ridiculous.
Hopefully theyll play MORE AB songs in future live OR Just do an anniversary tour for that who knows...they are always busy & always touring.... Cant wait to see em again.
It's something really in this music and songs ! I have listen to this record "The Joshua Tree" again and again many years when I was about 16 y. old maybe till 30' ! Now I'm much older and I'm back to this records :) why?? There is such energy in it and something more..
Impossible to say what is the best U2 song. There are so many great ones and the harder you look and listen the better they are. From any measure they are the best Rock band ever.
To hell with U2's cynics and detractors because the band's sincerity is always spot on and their best music is heartfelt and emotionally potent.
i agree and can say that the new stuff is just as good. God bless and may love and peace be to you.
This is a wonderful, underappreciated masterpiece. The voice of Bono was at his best moment and this is the best song to show it.
After being a die-hard U2 fan since september 1980, knowing every song U2 ever performed or played and being a musician myself, I can finally say that this is the best U2 song ever. This one will make it to my funeral!

Although I feel this way about "Joshua Tree", I get these feelings, even more, when I revisit "Unforgettable Fire".
unionmade82 in Joshua tree there are many songs with great and deep meaning. I realize the meaning of Exit a day before of their concert here in my.country
exit is about a murderer could be in any country mothers of the disappeared is about people in chile
@@DarthSiGi I agree... Goosebumps in the best way 💖
I love this song. The emotion in Bono's voice is other worldly.
The chorus is full of passion, what a high tone! I've got always shivers. Thanks U2 for this song! and for all.
Brilliant song from an amazing album. The Joshua Tree completely changed my music taste. An album you can put on and enjoy without skipping a track.
no filler
I always think of that bitch Thatcher when I hear this
now the brits have another bitch MAY
they certainly have.....
jpwoody76 same here! I guess we're the same age too ;-)
One of the most underrated songs EVER! This should have been easily a single.
If you ever saw them live then you know this was anything but underrated, there whole show was structured around this song
God, the passion in Bono's voice on this track sends shivers down my spine. What an amazing talent! One of my very favorite U2 songs.
YES...
Amazing talent and voice, makes me happy
U need headphones to do his voice justice. For example "into the heart" "unforgettable fire" or my new favorite "in a lifetime" by Clannad (bono sang with enya's sis)
I'm an Indonesian Muslim, I loved U2 since elementary school, now I'm getting old over 40, I still love them....
Pandu Brewijaya true music transcends any religion. You are the proof of it. All united in soul music.
I want to hug you man! I was a war child at 10...somewhere in the world....politics and religion divide us....ain't fair ...all I want to do is live in peace and have respect and for people to do the same...why can't we ?? I can't help commenting; it's 2020 and Trump says coal is good and windmills cause cancer. The future of humanity is extremely bleak. But at least I lived to experience U2!

I really love this song. Bono's voice sounds so great!!
I'm hanging on !!! They're hot in this video, literally! BTW, this is one of my favourite songs from the Joshua Tree
You realize this song is supposed to inspire the opposite right?
what an album...most of the radio hits are on side A, but side B makes the album. I was lucky enough to see the Joshua Tree tour in a packed old Cleveland Municipal stadium in a steady mist of rain. what I wouldn't give to re-live that night.
When was that year?
"Most of the radio hits are on side A, but side B makes the album."
This. EXACTLY ALL OF FUCKING THIS.
Couldn't agree more. Side B makes the album -- incredible stuff. That album is an absolute treasure!!
I feel the same of The Unforgettable Fire tour in Arizona 1985. Amazing doesn't do it justice.
Watch the news for tomorrow, 9 January, 2017, as they're expected to announce details for a Joshua Tree 30th anniversary tour!
Always loved this album, great memories as a teenager in summer 86. Just recently I`ve rediscovered this track in particular. Its really current, very emotional ..... I think of it as my Dad who I live with, he`s 80 and my best mate. I`m preparing to miss him I suppose! Love it!
Hands down one of the best rock albums ever of my generation that includes the 80's and 90's and the first five years of the 2000's.
From father to son
The blood runs thin
Ooh, see the faces frozen (still)
Against the wind.
The seam is split
The coal-face cracked
The lines are long
There's no going back.
Through hands of steel
And heart of stone
Our labour day
Has come and gone.
They leave me holdin' on
In Red Hill Town.
See the lights go down on ...
Hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to.
I'm still waiting
I'm hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to.
The glass is cut
The bottle run dry.
Our love runs cold
In the caverns of the night.
We're wounded by fear
Injured in doubt.
I can lose myself
You I can't live without.
Yeah, you keep me holdin' on
In Red Hill Town.
See the lights go down on…
Hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to.
I'm still waiting
I'm hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to
On to.
We scorch the earth
Set fire to the sky
And we stooped so low
To reach so high.
A link is lost
The chain undone.
We wait all day
For night to come
And it comes like a hunter (child).
I'm hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to.
I'm still waiting
I'm hangin' on
You're all that's left to hold on to.
We see love, slowly stripped away
Our love has seen its better day.
Hangin' on
Lights go down on Red Hill
The lights go down on Red Hill.
The lights go down on Red Hill.
The lights go down on Red Hill Town
Oh fuck off.
God bless and peace and love be with you. I'm a Christian but i still love to rock.
The live rendition is gobsmackingly beautiful.
it is an album you can sing the words to all day long
Bit of an overlooked song this, it's always been one of my favourites on the JT though
The B-side in general is overlooked. Side-A had the singles and one of the few albums in history to have that many anthem tracks in a row. I do love the whole album though. Exit is another overlooked song.
I still have this on cassette.

This is one of my all time fave U2 songs. But this video is hilarious. Go sweaty Bono go!
Cursed
😅😅😅
I love this song but I cannot avoid to comment about the sweaty and passionate Bono. It's hard on us ladies! So gourgeous.
That's so true lol its almost funny no wait it is kinda hilarious but damn 😈💪🔥🔥sexy too ill admit!!✌💖👏
never went for bono, im in love with larry until 1981 or so lol
Yasss. Bono is killing us softly in this one.💘
I am straight, but Bono is really sexy here...no way.
I'm a completely straight guy, and Bono was sexy as heck back then. His eyes and energy screams passion, ardor, intensity, mixed with some spirituality and depth.
One of my all time favourites
Played this to death. Half expect a faded and strained tape-sound halfway through the song. What a beauty, but, ironically not all that's left to hold on to.
ya gotta cool fucking nic and cool logo -rock on!
I haven't heard this song in a long time...U2 gets me everytime.. heart and soul...luv them since I was a child
It's difficult as a U2 fan not to love this video. It's an amazing song. Cheesey? Can't say that. But it is funny how Larry keeps beating away the entire video. The look on his face! Funny! I love these guys. The "Tree" is such an amazing album even 20 years later!
Probably just got overlooked since there were so many other good tracks on the album as well!
I can't believe I've never seen this video after I thought I saw them all lol!! Thanks for sharing!
... The joshua tree album.. forse tra i più belli del mondo intero!
grandi U2
I'm perplexed by people hating on the video. It's 100% in sync with what the song is about and I can't see what's wrong with it, asthetically or thematically. In fact I think it fits the song perfectly. The Soviet-era Realist styling, the canary-in-a-coal-mine reference. The song is about Thatcher's assault on the livelihood of Welsh miners. Do people want some completely irrelevant pop video to accompany the song?
It was actually wrote about the mines in the midlands and northern England being closed down and how it ripped the communities apart.
farrenh Great video.
I was just thinking that, people stating they don't get it, or it doesn't work. What? They are perfectly in sync! You said it best, so thank you!
Star Wars fans
It's dreadful. They should have just strolled around Death Valley at sunset and shot it in b/w.
This is one of the greatest f****** rock bands that is I can't ever remember them not putting out bad music I mean ever since I was a kid I would listen to you too and I mean just awesome and actually see him in concert is even awesome
Came back to my memory two days ago by luck in my job and I felt so uplifted .. Amazing what music does to your soul !
This song represents for me the blood sweat and tears of the blue collar worker
Simple chords, complex feelings... a desolation in words and melody. Brilliant!
a special class of music....one of the best
Bono's voice at it's peak here...... awesome!! U2 Rocks it!!
In loving memory of the 29 miners who lost their lives at the pike river mine. Great decision not to permanently seal the mine. Maybe one day we can bring the boys home and give them the burial they deserve. RIP the pike river 29.
Sexy in questo video
U2 touring the whole Joshua tree album in 2017..... can't wait to hear this live
Seeing them in Seattle and Boston
they sometimes don't play it though
They have never played this song live. They are playing the whole Joshua Tree album on the upcoming tour and it is the first time old U2 fans have a chance to see this song preformed.
I must mention that though they are claiming "all" of the songs, remember the have re-mastered them. Maybe a slight "re-mix" of the songs we have come to know? I have seen them play live over 60 times and have heard/watched "Streets..." played each one of those times. So I am curious of how this will be for this tour. Catching them in YVR and DUB. Vancouver for the opener and making the pilgrimage to Croake Park in Dublin.
Is that before or after YOU peaked, Scott?
Brilliant tune, one of if not the best by u2,always think of my old grandad when listening to this, spent 46 years down the pit, passed away april 05 aged 81
Been a U2 fan since 84 an they have become my second favorite band of all time.. Joshua Tree album is still one of my favorite albums ever..
You, my friend, would possibly remember just a few years earlier, when MTV started up and they played a lot of U2 from the very beginning of both, U2 and MTV. Hooked from then on. Damn college was fun!
Didn't know my favorite U2 song had a video ; It never fails to make me sing
Red Hill Mining Town (Ville Minière De Red Hill)
From Father to Son
De père en fils
The blood runs thin
Le sang se raréfie
See the faces frozen still
Regarde les visages toujours gelés
Against the wind
Face au vent
The seam is split
La couture est dédoublée
The coal face cracked
Le visage plein de charbon se gerçait
The lines are long
Les rides sont profondes
And there's no going back
Et on ne peut pas revenir en arrière
Through hands of steel
Malgré des mains d'acier
And a heart of stone
Et un coeur de pierre
Our labour day
Notre jour de travail
Has come and gone
S'est terminé comme il était venu
And you leave me holding on
Et tu m'abandonne
In Red Hill Town
A la ville de Red Hill
See the lights go down
En regardant les lumières s'éteindre
[Chorus]
[Refrain]
I'm hanging on
Je m'accroche
You're all that's left to hold on to
Tu est tout ce qui me permet de tenir
I'm still waiting
J'attends toujours
I'm hanging on
Je m'accroche
You're all that's left to hold on to
Tu est tout ce qui me permet de tenir
The glass is cut
Le verre est brisé
The bottle run dry
La bouteille se vide
Our love runs cold
Notre amour devient froid
In the caverns of the night
Dans les cavernes de la nuit
We're wounded by fear
Nous sommes envahis par la crainte
Injured in doubt
Parcouru par le doute
I can lose myself
Je peux me perdre
You, I can't live without
Je ne peux vivre sans toi
Yeah you keep me holding on
Ouais tu me permet de tenir
In Red Hill Town
Dans la ville de Red Hill
As the lights go down
Quand les lumières s'éteignent
[Chorus]
[Refrain]
And we scorch the earth
Et nous desséchons la terre
Set fire to the sky
Mettons le feu au ciel
We stoop so low
Nous nous penchons si bas
To reach so high
Pour nous relevé si haut
A link is lost
Un lien est perdu
The chain undone
La chaine est brisée
We wait all day
Nous attendons tout le jour
For the night to come
Pour que la nuit arrive
And it comes
Et elle vient
Like a hunter child
Comme un enfant de chasseur
[Chorus]
[Refrain]
Love slowly stripped away
L'amour est lentement détruit
Love has seen its better day
L'amour a connu un meilleur jour
I'm hanging on
Je m'accroche
The lights go down on Red Hill (X2)
Les lumières s'éteignent sur Red Hill (X2)
The lights go down on Red Hill Town
Les lumières s'éteignent sur la ville de Red Hill
The lights go down on Red Hill
Les lumières s'éteignent sur Red Hill
THIS WAS The 1st song I heard them EVER Do & I fell in love with ALL thé Band has done minus a few lol Heres to their reaching for nothing less than then Great
"I'm hanging on .. Ur all that's left to hold on to..." God I love this band!... God I love this man!!!
Take out Sgt Pepper and you are doing ok
....JAR OF FLIES, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, INNERVISIONS, SUPERUNKNOWN, SYNCHRONICITY, ABBEY ROAD,.....
interesting you have got kind of blue in there - not knocking it though
Disintegration, sabbath bloody sabbath, infinite sadness...
Poetry... Only wish they could come to Venezuela
as some may already know, canaries, due to their tiny fragility are extremely sensitive to toxins and cold draft among many other things...canaries were used back in the day to detect poisonous gases to protect minors, if the canary stopped singing the "alarm bells" would go off. my canary named "disorder" recently died. (name picked randomly from a dictionary) had him for 7 years. great singer....rip buddy
one of Joshua Tree's pearls. Like mothers of the disappeared and one tree hill.
JoyIn Jesus
take a fucking chill pill, reli freak.
I am more connected with kiwi music
you really had to bring RELIGION into an AMAZING song about pro union worker solidarity.....wow how freaking pathetic
people diss U2, but TJT is the finest album I've ever listened to. It's up there with Angel Dust/Superunknown for me.
Is it me or does Larry Mullen look a lot like Ivan Drago from Rocky III?
He looks more like Dolly Parton 🙌🙌🙌😁😁😁😁🐸🐸💡💡
Rocky 4. Rocky 3 was Clubber Lang. And I pity the fool that gets them mixed up 😂😂😂
@@georgewales6307 🤣🤣🤣
Yes!! :}
Bono's vocal range really is astounding
...BONO VOX...translation...good voice.....where his name Bono comes from.
Watching this in Detroit during the 30th anniversary tour of the Joshua Tree tour was a highlight of my life
Joshua Tree is a true masterpiece. What a monumental album. All the transcendent things you hope an album can be. 80's U2 was just untouchable.
U2 sensacional!!!
EVER!!! In one sense this breaks my heart a little because hearing "Red Hill" LIVE would most likely be magical, on the other hand there is something very noble about the idea of "If you can't do it 100% then don't bother doing it at all." :- )
+griiseknoen wow. Thank you for that perspective. makes me smile and admire that much more
+griiseknoen you should read the history of what hes, bono is talking about.much generational pain and suffering.liked your explanation of music.
Great comment I am glad I was hooked on the song before I saw the video. A video can never capture the essence of this song
That was a great insight,thanks
THE GREATEST BAND,ALL LEGENDS🧡🧡🧡
and this might be the 5th or 6th best song on the album.
Possibly the greatest album ever. (opinion, of course)
Dimestore Philosopher I put Achtung Baby one spot ahead :)
Wookiee Warrior Oh man, sorry but I just never that much got into Achtung. It's all subjective, but I just don't like the heavy electronic music. But, I LOVE this band.
Larry Justice I'm guessing you don't like Pop that much either than! :)
Dimestore Philosopher Right up beside Dark Side in my collection...all ways said U2 will go down in history beside Zeppelin and Floyd.
Bono was at peak JT humina humina! ;-D
"We wait all day, for night to come " the creed of every laborer.
This is one of their underrated songs. Great, great music and musicians.
4:44 "love ! slowly stripped away.....! Love, has seen its better day.....!" awesome !
U3 is the best rock band in the World, i listen to the U2 Music every day.
Goosebumps from the first note.
WOW. 1st U2 album I ever bought. Never seen the clip before but its a gem . That guitar could cut a hole through a tornado!! Rock on . This is magic. " We Scorch the earth , set fire to the sky we wait all day for the night to come and it does. " Classic structure.
My grandpa work in Pennsylvania as a miner. Died of Black Lung.
My son Joshua was born on January 29th 1989. Gu were his name came from? So proud and still going because they've changed their music with the times. Who else as ever done that? I guess u could say Madonna but come on.
Gracias a The Joshua Tree me coverti en fan de U2, y lo sigo siendo hasta la fecha.....!
One of the their best songs with milk unforgettable fire one tree hill. Celtic classics, tear me up every time
Great, emotive song and message.
Algum Brasileiro por aqui, curtindo essa obra prima do U2!
amazing voice... amazing song... going back in time with this song....
@fireballpip
I agree. I think its a beautiful song and the video compliments it. I noticed some viewer comments project a negative, often homophobic weirdness onto the video and I just wanted to push back on that commentary. I like the video very much because of Bono's emotional performance.
From the thumbnail, it looks like Bono has some terrible dreadlocks.
Gosh the passion of this great man's vocal performance here, he's more chilled these days - he was a bit gorgeous too.
My favourite U2 track, after Life is d’ Rollercoaster, I love the edges accented slide that typifies a rollercoaster.
Rich Aftanas wise words mate ab no1 followed closet by Joshua treee
Uma das melhores músicas e ,ainda por cima , é da altura em que a pessoa mais importante estava presente na minha vida. Um beijo ao meu pai.
Red Hill Town is my favorite U2 song!
tremenda cancion, esta es la resureccion de joshua tree, se viene con todo, el mejor album de todos los tiempos que fueron y que vendran, insuperable.
Push 5 on yr keyboard. Bono will tell you what he thinks of you!
De mis canciones favoritas, capaz de sacar mis sentimientos de rabia e impotencia ante el estado opresor. gracias U2
I agree..... but love the song Running to stand still al so
Una canción q refleja el concepto y la fuerza de esta banda, una de las mejores de los 90's, lo demás pues ya fue otra historia.
This is the song where the volume just can’t get high enough.
It's something really in this music and songs ! I have listen to this record "The Joshua Tree" again and again many years when I was about 16 y. old maybe till 30' ! Now I'm much older and I'm back to this records :) why?? There is such energy in it and something more..
my favorite U2 song...
In my opinion, this is their best song.
I would most likely turn gay for this Bono.
hahaha, i have friends who say the same
PAUL LECLERC it's a joke.
Easily the best vocal performance of Bono's career. The guy sure has some pipes on him!
One if not U2’s best song.
Impossible to say what is the best U2 song. There are so many great ones and the harder you look and listen the better they are. From any measure they are the best Rock band ever.
