  • In this video I review the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Off-Roading in the snow range test. I test out the AWD on seasonal dirt roads with snow and examine how it handles. I also determine the amount of range lost with running the heat as well as having it sit outside in 27 degree temperature for 3 hours. I hope you all enjoy this video and will consider supporting my efforts by liking and subscribing.

I saw your trip where you only used the heater fan on setting 1, now how much would the mileage have changed if you just used the auto setting and set it at like 71. Also I know buffalo can get much colder that 30s and I was just curious how much the range is affected when the temperature is say in the teens? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

    FYI remote start for 10 minutes will not heat the battery (only the cabin), you have to set a departure time activate battery heating. It takes about an hour to warm up the battery due to the thermal mass.

      was going to say this. Its also due to the Mach-e only having a 5K watt heater as well. So in my research with the car, if you dont set a departure time in the winter, it suffers greatly for it. NOW Ford SHOULD be letting owners know about this feature in colder climates, but its one of, if not the MOST, important things you do during winter driving.

      Do we only remember the fast Mustangs? There were some years in the late 70's and early 80's that the Mustang was running very crappy 4 cylinder engines. If it's built by Ford and they call it a Mustang, [nobody else can, right] then it's a genuine Mustang. It's a lot like Harley Davidson when they came out with the V-rod, your die hards were like, no that's not a Harley. Well, Harley built it, Harley named it, so it's a Harley...!

      Hey Dan! Love Lancaster, my god parents live there! The Auto Setting will determine the fan speed and temp to get the cabin to a comfortable temperature. If you are looking to conserve energy I would adjust heat yourself, it doesnt take much to warm things up. When the temperature is below freezing and in the teens you probably lose 40 miles of range depending on wind chill, ect. What I noticed is the cold you drive slower which helps range so you get some back too. Lots of range loss when running heat on high and when its freezing outside

    MACH-E have huge battery buffers even after the upgrade that released more battery. Whenever possible charge to over 90% it will also give better accurate estimates of range. The 80% thing is BS on a car that has plenty of buffer. So judging from the range this sounds like the standard smaller battery with AWD? One more observation, a long road trip is 500 miles and above.

    • @MatthewManzella
      @MatthewManzella  2 роки тому +1

      You are correct! It does say in the Manuel to not charge past 80% but I agree with you. The cars buffer was a great design feature to protect the battery. I have to question the range and battery charge loss you reported occurring during your three hour hike.
    I have the same model MME and have not experienced significant loss of battery charge when the car is parked. Not over days much less three hours. And mine has been exposed to similar temperature conditions.
    I don’t question that the range can change over a short period of time as the algorithm incorporates current and expected temperatures. I have seen range prediction fall and rise without any change in the percentage of charge.
    What I have not experienced is any sort of phantom drain of energy from the charge pack in such a short period of time. Extrapolating from your three hour loss of 5%, sitting 12 hours over nite the car would lose 20%.
    I haven’t experienced this. Nor has anyone on the support forums made such a claim.
    Did you restart the car during your hike?
    Have you experienced any similar drop in your battery’s charge level when the car is sitting and not “on”?

    You didn't really loose 30-35 percent range, instead you used 30-35 percent of the battery energy for heat.
    A gas car heats a car for free, provided that you need heat.If you don't, it is 100% waste heat that the car is making at all times. Otherwise only about 30-40 percent of that energy goes from the tank to actual distance travelled.
    An EV, being 70-80 percent efficient, conservatively, in terms of energy stored to distance travelled only appears more sensitive to range loss in winter. Basically you dive for 25% as cheap as gas in the summer, and no worse than 50-60 as much as gas in the winter.
    Batteries and gas store energy, not distance....
    Nice Vid

If I do a 400 mile trip then the ice car won't be able to estate the ac use. Instead, the 400 range of fuel will run down quicker due to the ac being on. In my ev, if I do the same example, even from stationary, the car predicts the impact of ac before you've even started to drive. So then it up and the range decreases, turn the fan speed up one notch and it decreases. That's predicting.

      It would be better if they used a heat pump. Electric heat is “100%” efficient but AC is something like 1200 to 1400% - so since a heat pump is like 300% to 400% better than what Ford put in here, you’d get back a TON of range.

    • @tuminatr
      @tuminatr 2 роки тому +2

      Not necessarily, I have observed that the effect on the range when running the heat is very close to running the AC. Mild climates are best for range. I have a Premium XR AWD and just put all-weather 18" factory size 225/60/18 104v tires and select wheels on the car. My efficiency is up and I took a similar 40 mile round trip at 19 degrees. The GOM said 224 miles of range when I left my house (battery preconditioned and charged to 90%) it said 222 miles range when I got home. The trip meter recorded the 42 miles driven at 3.5m/kwh and that's quite good. I think the 18" tires have a better ride less bouncy more smooth and the Vredestein Quatrac tires I chose handle corners much better. I would agree that the factory 19" Michelin tires are not great but it's rare for the factory tires on anything to be really good.

      @@MatthewManzella it seems that the distance you describe would be no problem as long as you are able to charge at home nightly. That seems to be the advantage of an EV despite the comparatively short range . While a conventional car could easily do the 300 miles/week on one fill up, an EV could essentially do it without ever dealing with stopping to fill up since it’s all done at home. However, if home charging was unavailable, time lost charging would be a major inconvenience, especially in cold weather operation.
