Given the various shortcomings of the two stocks presented here I think I'll keep looking for different options, however your video clarified a lot of my desires for my rifle so I appreciate that!

I installed a Tapco stock, removed the bayonet and replaced it with a bipod. I also placed a red dot sight on the rail. She shoots excellent in this configuration. I am 6 foot 2 with long arms and the original stock was way to small.
I don't care about the extra difficulty in field stripping. A small tool kit should be on hand any time you are going to be out for a long time anyways.
For the $60 I paid for the Tapco kit it made this gun far more enjoyable to handle and fire. $30 for the red dot and $24 for the bipod mean I only spent $114 for the whole build.

Had an older Tapco w/o the bayonet recess, finally put it on several years ago, then put the rifle in the back of my safe. Then along came several ARs, AKs and PCCs. The rifle has never been shot in its Tapco get up. After finding the bayonet which I thought I had lost, I decided to return the rifle to its original condition. It looks so much better.

The tapco ak47 pistol grip when put on this stock actually sits a little farther back and mitigated the issue the original tapco sks pistol grip has.

  • @billredding2000
    @billredding2000 4 роки тому +2

The Tapco stocks DO have storage in the butt-stock -- there's a tube that will accommodate the OEM military-issue SKS cylindrical cleaning kit just like the original-issue wood stock has in it. In fact, after I insert my OEM SKS kit into the Tapco's butt-stock tube, I need to add a piece of rolled-up paper towel (the blue "shop towels" auto-parts stores sell as they are quite durable -- kitchen paper towels aren't!) so the kit doesn't rattle around back & forth in there. That solution is fine because I can use the towel as a cleaning rag or cut cleaning patches from it.
In the pistol grip storage area, I keep a small/short hex key wrench (IIRC< the size needed is 7/64" or 3mm) for the two hex machine screws on the butt-stock (where it attaches to the stock) and a rigged-up 10mm socket "tool" to remove the pistol-grip should either of those things be necessary (they aren't usually, but I want them on-hand with the gun anyway, just in case). However, with the butt-stock removed, the SKS become a "shorty" and feels much like an AK -- would be great for really close-up work such as inside a building in that mode. or even using from inside a vehicle. ;-)
    Happy SKS-ing,
    -- BR

There _is_ a very simple modification to the Tapco pistol grip to allow easy unlock and removal of the trigger group - and consequently the whole stock - without unscrewing the grip screw.
The grip already has a wide slot for the trigger guard. All you need is to make this slot ~5 cm longer and ~2 mm wider on each side. Remove extra material any way you want - this is plastic, so it is easy. To unlock the trigger group, put a long metal tool, like a Phyllips screwdriver, through the bottom of the grip and press on the unlocking button. The new bigger slot will allow the released trigger group to maneuver back and forth and up and down enough to be removed completely out of the stock. (And back into the stock for re-assembly, of course).
Parting with bayonet on Tapco will also allow you to use bayonet-less tapco option that has useful rail on the bottom of the stock front end (second grip, bipod, light, etc.)
Final word: if you own good old matching-parts historical piece of art - leave it as is. Just buy a second gun of lower "whole historical" value (assembled from non-matching parts and pieces) and "modernize" that second piece. All modern stocks make it a great inexpensive fun platform!

I really like the look of the Archangel, but there are two big disadvantages that would affect me.
    1. The pistol grip comfort issue addressed in your video
    2. No clearance to install Tech Sight TS100/200 sights.
Also concerning the Archangel, from descriptions ive read on acouple sites selling this stock, they make it sound like the archangel only accepts their own magazines? Is this true? If so that would be another disadvantage.
Looks like i may have to go with an OD Green Tapco

The tapco grip just needs a little plastic shaved off the inside of the grip with a dremel sanding drum where the trigger assembly needs to move down and out. I have done it to mine and it works. If you want a tacti-cool stock tapco is the way to go. It has some flexibility when under stress which is good and bad. Feels good in your hands and points well, but I wish tapco would put steel of aluminum reinforcements along the sides of the stock for more rigidity and a metal faux buffer tube at standard mil-spec, other than that I think tapco takes the cake.

The original stock's length of pull is about perfect for an average-sized person who is wearing a flak jacket or body armor, which means it's great for my 5'0" tall wife, and also for me in body armor. No need for a new-fangled fancy collapsible stock, the SKS's original wood stock is magical. :-) I also love the fact that when a hoplophobe looks at an SKS in a plain wood stock (and with the goofy bayonet removed), they see Grandpa Kettle's old Kentucky musket instead of the battle rifle that it really is. Nothing scary here folks, nothing to see, move along... In fact, the SKS, as it comes, is so non-threatening it's even allowed in Canada. ***Gasp***

U=I have had no trouble using the 20 or 30 round magazines. I bought the 30 round mags first, then the 20 round mags, which I prefer , as I can get lower to the ground and not so exposed . The 30 round mag makes you sit up higher to sight down the barrel and makes you an easier target on possible return fire.

You can remove the barrel action on the tapco without removing the pistol grip there's a slot to place a screwdriver to push the release just like you do with the wood stock. The archangel you need to take apart to field-strip which is one of the reasons I returned mine and kept the tapco. Not the best information on this video.

That's not a bad price for an unrestricted AR alternative. I never got interested in the stuff from Alberta Tactical because of the high cost... but the NEA rifle is more reasonable.... still much more expensive than a tricked out SKS.... The BCL 102 is certainly more tacticool... I don't know about performance yet for the BCL 102, but I would assume its pretty good.

Both aftermarket stocks have serious drawbacks: one design interferes with the sights, the other interferes with trigger access. With these flaws I wouldn't consider either one. Better off staying with the original and adding a butt extension until a better aftermarket design comes available.

I'd rather keep mine original and the truth of the matter the reason why the buttstock was short it's a lot of the soldiers wore heavy winter coats so as for the matter of the reach that way they can quickly get their rifle up to their shoulders fast without snagging I'd rather deal with the original buttstock and have a sleeve on it than any aftermarket

Field stripping the arcangel is a pain in the ass apparently from what some people have said. A guy that owns both the Tapco and Arcangel did a review of both stocks on two SKS's. He said while the Arcangel is a really nice stock it's not something you would want to be using for protection in a shtf scenario due having no way of getting to the cover to quickly field strip it unlike the Tapco which is something to think about. If your using your SKS for protection stick with Tapco if your using it for taking it to the range and have no desire of using it as a rifle for protection maybe because you have something better go for the Arcangel it's nicer looking.

When that video was published an SKS was $130 at Canadian Tire. Market values have changed a bit since then huh. It's still a good value here in Canada even at recent prices though, considering what it is. Might not be the case in the USA though where an SKS gets an unobtainium premium.
