NS or NT Pajero is the way to go, typically won’t be flogged because P platers tend to go for the Patrols or Landcruiser to trash, bound to get best value for money, reliability and a massive community to help you as an owner
So no issues with turbo diesel? I’m looking for my first 4wd but on a budget. Always worried about buying a 2nd hand 4wd in case the owner has thrashed it over the years
@@positivepete4265 if your looking for a diesel get an NT Pajero or above, the NS Pajero was the first series they put in DPF’s and common problems with them, to which most people were taking them out (highly illegal) I have a 2007 NS Pajero Exceed done 285,000 and it has been extremely reliable and I’d rate them as a good first 4x4
Love this show😁. Currently walking the minefield of buying my first 4wd to do some touring of oz. This has been really helpful sawing between the patrol or Pajero
I just bought a 98 LX470, done a few thousand km in it already, original suspension rebuilt before I bought it, bloody brilliant! Came with all the normal 4wd accessories too. Ready for the outback. It's in SA. I have a solid axle LC as well but that independent front and the factory fitted rear diff lock is definitely growing on me.
Suzuki Sierra's from 1996 still go strong! I also have a patrol because I couldn't afford a landcruiser. In saying that, I've had no problems with it and it handles the tough stuff with ease.
@@samster978 I've never had an issue but have heard of some that had problems, I think it was rectified by changing the radiator cap. If you google it you should find some information around the problem. Cheers
Pretty sure the 90 and the landcruiser have a similar suspension setup with IFS in the front and solid axle rear. Would love to see a review on the 90series prado if you get one.
As an NS Pajero owner since 2011 I can concur, its an amazing vehicle that is both very good on road and off road. The driving dynamics I found were better than the Prado I test drove at the time, and is still very decent off-road with a mild lift, good 32" tires, rear diff-lock and some underbody protection. Absolutely zero issues with it for the 12 years of ownership. Actually was looking at upgrading it this past year but couldnt justify the amount of costdifference to upgrade (esp since interest rates have gone up), so will keep it for a few more years I reckon.
I adore my GQ, but sadly I will have to say goodbye in the near future. I really want a GU, if I could, I’d stick with patrols forever, but the GU is just so fuel hungry. So I’ve been tossing up between Prado and Pajero. I like them both a lot and Pajero’s are the cheaper option, but my dad does not like them and says they are not reliable.
My old man has a GU and it's been fantastic apart from spending a few days removing all aftermarket useless wiring from the previous onwer and replaced the leaking exhaust system from the extractors down to the muffler, it's a beast of machine It's 4.8L petrol
Hey Adam, you should review the 1996-1999 Ford Explorer that was sold in Australia. Some of them are still running... There's one in Perth which has 252k kms still running strong...
The best AWD for under 5K or 20K are rear wheel drive with good set of winter tires or mud tires depending on the area where you live. Rear wheel drive is the only solution for great driving dynamics.
Suprised the Grand Vitara didn't get an honourable mention on this video as they do have some chops for off roading if given half a chance. Be interesting to see if next weeks list is the best tradie vehicles under $20k or not. Good job guys and I have a feeling this Friday's car is coming from an American marque for some reason so it'll be interesting to see if I guess correctly or not lol 😂.
Jimnys are great little bush bashers. Patrols are better before 2006 from what my sister's brother-in-law says as he had nothing but problems with his old 2012 & his 2019 before buying his current 2003 model. Landcruisers are fantastic cross country & mountain climbing car. Colorados are fine work vehicle according to my cousin who has 2 of them. Pajeros are decent too, but just buy a Landcruiser. Jeeps are too much of a gamble to bother with if you ask me. Personally despite my better judgement, I'd go the Jimny if I can't get a 2 door Rav 4.
In most markets (most of Africa in particular) there's pretty much little to no dealer/aftermarket support for the Patrol, or pretty much any Nissan/Infiniti for that matter. So it won't really be a great idea to own one. Goodluck even finding one to buy. Land Cruiser/ Land Cruiser Prado or Pajero? They're everywhere, especially the 120/150/200 series Land Cruiser/Prado.
MoAfrica, but there are good numbers of Patrols in the Middle East. The Y61 is known there as Safari/Super Safari and offered with TB48DE motor, with the choice of either manual or automatic transmission and it can be either swb or lwb. But aside from this region, You're better off with Land Cruiser.
Quick one. With each petrol option. Beware dodgey LPG conversions. I had a decent prado, completely let down by the subpar LPG install. When on Petrol it was brilliant. On gas it was down on power, would conk out at lights as I was about to take off, and was not at all that cheap to run on gas. AVOID THE LPG!
For those wondering. 132,000 kms when I bought her, now at 187. Daily inner city driving and 3 road trips, furthest being melb - Daintree and back. Hasn't skipped a beat
Apart from maybe the late model Patrols at a pinch, go for a petrol in any of these and many other models besides rather than a diesel. Not only are the petrols much cheaper to buy, the diesels all tend to have their own idiosyncratic BS that goes wrong with them which is why they're going for cheap. Or, like the 100- and 80-Series Cruisers, the diesels are very hardy but slow as a wet week and very, very high in mileage at this price. Just don't be shocked with the fuel bill on a petrol fourbie.
Or just swap the motor for more realible one (especially when it comes to Patrol). Here in Poland few shops specialize in swaps for M57 BMW engines, but that's an option for folks who are not afraid of experiments. I'd personally also go for petrol option and add lpg install (which are quite popular here, given the fuel prices per average wage).
You forgot the most comfortable and capable wagon straight out of the showroom. Land Rover Discovery 3 either V8 petrol or V6 diesel. Properly maintained they run forever.
" Best " Jeeps were made before 2004. Inline 6cyl will outlast any 3.7 v6. V6 can chew out cam lobes, drop valve seats or complete valves. In the States, there was a soft recall on the cylinder heads. Only if the customer complained they got it fixed. 😮
Bloke I knew had a ZD30 Patrol new, had had a couple of Patrols earlier and liked them but he hated this one so much he had a sticker made for the bonnet that said "NISSAN SHITBOX". So yeah...
Mitsi Pajero/Shogun (4th gen) Petrol: more efficient, more power, cheaper maintenance, lifespan of 600,000 Km Diesel: lower-curve power, lots of used models, lifespan of 900,000 Km only if looked after well Personally, I would go for the petrol, and have it as close to stock as possible for the "light offroad". If you want the heavier stuff, then yes, I recommend having MODs, and Diesel, but I also think you should do that on a different vehicle. So in that respects, a used LandCruiser 100 makes sense for its price.
"there are thousands of owners out there that have done huge and hard kilometres with the ZD30 and they've never had an issue". Excuse me, but where are these owners? Are they getting better longevity than similarly priced petrol patrols or 1HZ/FZ LCs? And since we are focusing on the 2000-09 era, how many ZD30s were sold vs how many are still alive today from that period? I can find cars for sale in many other models with kms well into the 400,000kms but Zd30s, not so much. But they are still priced like they last well past 300,000kms. If they do indeed last like other competing models, where are they? If the ZD30 is so good and not the worst motor to be put in a fullsize offroad focused SUV, how come it killed the relatively parity Patrol enjoyed with the landcruiser in the 90s? How come toyota could continue with the 5 year older 1HZ out of the 80 series right through the entire lifespan of the 105 series while gaining ground on the patrol as soon as the TD42 was discontinued? ps the guys at 4x4 24/7 are like...well known to be clowns. There advice is very sponsor driven, see all the Dmax peddling they do despite the many many broken CVs and such just trying to make it do what solid axle cars a decade older do in their sleep.
