The lady was right. When you plugged into the same EA charger she was plugged into you terminated her session. Even though there are two connectors, two cars cannot be charging from the same EA station @ the same time.
I found that out too right away. It's so odd because it's not that way with the Tesla chargers. I want to be in the room where they agreed that behavior was a good idea. Hmmm. I know! Let's make people want to fight with each other.
Honestly, I sincerely hope that Rivian succeeds as a company. I like a lot of their products, especially the upcoming R2. I'd love to see them improve their software more, but I'm glad that they'll keep Tesla and everyone else on their toes.
R2 will be huge, but there's already a cult following starting for R3 from the car communities. Should be a huge seller, too. My guess is the Van will sell a lot, too. Love that they are enhancing national charging network with 1) their own,.which is customer/adventure focused 2) adapting to Tesla network.
Just get the Tesla adapter and use Tesla or Rivian stations whenever possible. You'll have a great experience. I've road tripped 5000+ miles in my R1S.
Agreed. Though my first R1S trip was almost exclusively between EA chargers. I don't know if I was just lucky, but they worked fine almost every time. The one secret was that they were almost always the ones at a Walmart. Maybe those get more attention?
Wife's family is 500 miles to the South and mine is 1000 to the North. One of the main reasons I bought a Model Y and didn't even look at anything was the simplicity and reliability of the Supercharging network.
I haven’t watched the news in a decade. I read the news because I get to control what I read about. I feel fully informed without feeling assaulted by the fear approach of the news “if it bleeds, it leads.” Much happier, far less stressed and worried about things I have no control over. And yes I drove my ‘21 Model Model 3 SR+ across the US (Sacramento CA > Louisville KY and back, 5,500 miles). This is the least expensive, smallest battery, slowest charging vehicle Tesla sells. It was an absolutely fantastic trip! I have made many other long road trips and am totally convinced paying the $10k more for the bigger battery pack would have been wasted. Love your x-country trip videos! 👍🏼
Phoenix to Albuquerque on just one charge is amazing. That’s a long distance. For me in my Model Y making it from Gallup to Albuquerque is cutting it close.
I did a lot of research before buying my Tesla two years ago, and yours and many other videos remind me why that was the right decision. I love doing cross-country trips, but would not feel confident in any other EV. Tesla's charging infrastructure is second to none and has proven itself to me over many long-distance trips.
I’d love that trip! The stress of charging would be very stimulating. A private Blow-Out space is priceless. Awaiting to see how the rest of the trip goes! Be safe & have fun.
Watching you drive through Arizona reminds me of the feeling I get when people tell me “there are too many humans! There’s no land left!“ Usually spoken by folks who live in dense metropolitan areas.
Interesting point to consider. Even though there are two cables on each Electrify America charging station, only one cable can be used at a time. Two vehicles cannot charge on one station.
I took my Model Y on a 5,900 mile trip from Colorado to Newport, RI at the end of May. No problems at all using the Tesla Supercharging network and some trickle charging when visiting friends. Charging cost = $587. Did a similar trip in 2022 using an Acura RDX with 5,300 miles. Gasoline cost on that trip = $754.
Thanks for an awesome road trip experience....from my living room. The R1S has been on my list to test drive, but given your charging experience, I'm holding out for the new Y.
lets be real - bottom line is its not easy to road trip in any EV for more than 400-500 miles especially when you just want to get from point A to point B. when you need to charge more than two times on any road trip there are too many variables, regardless of vehicle. I did a 2500 mile road trip and it was painful either having to wait, finding dead/broken chargers, or going out of the way or to multiple locations to find a DCFC. let alone all the extra time waiting to charge once you do find a spot.
Depends on your mood/desire for A to B. If you're not in a hurry, it's not that hard at all. A quick charge(assuming you pick/get an easy-ish supercharger...I'm looking at you EA)...getting out, stretching, walk, food, coffee for 30-45 is really nice. Also, getting much easier with use of Tesla network now. Also depends on where you live; the west coast is super easy, and I have done that on another EV that only gets 200-220 highway.
Love your channel and videos, I notice you drive in the left lane a lot with no one in front or behind you. That’s a bad habit. Stay to the right and leave that lane for emergency vehicles or passing! ❤

Those towers you’re referring to is Mount Ord. There isn’t just cellular equipment up there either but also microwave communications systems for various local, state, and federal authorities.
There is a filter on the map for Tesla with adapter as well. Confusing with having it in multiple spots. Be careful the adapter doesn't get hot and throttle back. Some people wrap a wet rag on the adapter to avoid the hand hold sensor from tripping. It is pretty sensitive. the bus bar sensor internally likely will never trip. Liquid cooling on the ea cables often breaks or leaks. You'll get a derate to 40kw
@@danielam3829 True you can only prefer them but you can also filter so that it only uses A and B rated stations. That might narrow things down as well.
Took Rivian on 4500mi road trip. Loved it, but charging is not there. Would only charge at Tesla and Rivian if this was possible…unfortunately it’s not. Would love to see RAN have a cross country route up soon
NACS adoption really isn't going to help because its just a plug. NACS is still CCS communication on non tesla owned chargers. Tesla superchargers only work on certain cars and they only allow NACS (non tesla) on V3s and V4s. So much work needs to be done on both the Tesla and Non Tesla side of the house in terms of charging before things will be good. We really need to see other companies dedicated to relability like Tesla and Tesla starting to upgrade V2 chargers to V4 and release chargers that can actually hold 250+ kw for a longer period of time and 800 volt support.
I may have fast forwarded past the explanation, but is there a reason you didn't just stick with Tesla chargers (and RAN)? With the adapter, I can't imagine even giving this a second thought. But again, maybe I missed something.
Great video. Not selling me on Rivian much as I’d like to be. Curious whether during your road trip you had the tonneaux (how the f do you spell that word?!) cover closed. Looked open the whole way (and empty) which I’m guessing hurts range by at least 10%? And of all the non Tesla and Rivian chargers, which off brand worked best? EVgo? “Love your body Larry!”
I wish you and others would compare the cost of your trip for electric and gas. Using a mpg average for gas. Help out people to know more on the $s used to travel.

You mentioned the one pull down to set the dynamic cruise control. My question is related to my model Y with FSD. How do you set the cruise control without activating FSD? One slight tap down engages my FSD.
Please do not insult the English with such a horrendous attempt of an accent, By the way many countries such as South Africa, Japan, New Zealand and Australia also drive on the left, same as the UK!
What is the deal with the R1T seats? Are they as comfortable as the Model X seats? Curious as Tesla is buying my 2023 X back as of November they have had this car at service center 8 times. Mostly FWD issues and other stuff and thinking about a different EV but worried about long trips and non Tesla Network
If you can wait for the native NACS adapter in the vehicle I would. The adapters are REALLY back ordered and worse and not part of the test and accounted for part of charging. The issue is that most DC fast charge cables are immersion cooled and the ports have sensors etc. When you introduce another device that was not part of the testing and can cause heat/overheat issues and the charger (EVSE) to derate to lower or the car to do it as well they will be more likely to do it with an adapter in there as well (See this video). I am very excited to see Tesla opening up to others but until they use native NACS, it's better than nothing but not by much. See this video for an example of that. Put native NACS adapters in the cars and and let someone travel 100% on Tesla's network... then you have something.
Over all the rivian did great on this trip I just had to filter for only Tesla and Rivian chargers as I showed in the video. The range was excellent and the seats were supportive no issues with the seats
Gjeebs, love your videos. You have the perfect balance of goofy humor and useful information. Thank you. However you should know what’s happening with Hydrosilex. As briefly as possible, I used your discount code to try to purchase two 16 oz. products. Got a decent discount, new total was about $27, great. Then to complete the purchase, Hydrosilex added another $28 in shipping! WTF? It’s 2 - 16oz. bottles! Needless to say, I killed the order. I thought you should know. I love Hydrosilex products but $28 to ship it? Really?

33:40 “What this car lacks in a consistent charging network…” You repeat this sentiment many times, even though you used a Tesla station last and you just said you were making about the same time you would have in your Tesla. That’s nonsensical.
I think it holds in some regard if you consider that the "average person" he talks about is never going to discover the charging network preferences and turn off navigation to EA/EV Go or other historically unreliable spots. I'd love to see Rivian and others start using telemetry from charging sessions to inform the navigation system and help people who are used to the reliability of our gasoline network to make better decisions. Filling up with gas was like this in the early days of the automobile, so I expect this is going to take a while to shake out.
I drove my Model Y from Long Island to Orlando. It was great since I took our dog with me. With the Dog Mode and the fact that she can’t really stay in the car for a “full tank of gas” it did not slow me down. As a result, I was more relaxed and hydrated since we were both peeing frequently. Without her, I probably would have taken my gas car and went 400 miles on a tank of gas in a constant state of dehydration, and arrived in Florida or back home with a headache and sore throat! That being said, we have 2 ICE vehicles, which I’m thinking about converting another to an EV. I have a hard time with anything but another Tesla due to the fact that I travel regionally a lot and we also road trip a few times a year.
Ahh the Rivian - such a wonderful anti-tesla un-elon car. TriMax R1S on order and about 3 weeks out from delivery. Been driving my buddies dual gen2 and the build quality is so nice.

You mentioned the one pull down to set the dynamic cruise control. My question is related to my model Y with FSD. How do you set the cruise control without activating FSD? One slight tap down engages my FSD.
You can change it in the settings. Single pull or 2 pulls
You guys should move to CT 😊
So what are your thoughts on the car itself (comfort, ride, etc.) for long road trips? Besides charging haha
I went over it in the video but great comfort and ride quality. I was please on my trip. Body felt good
Remembered you said your Rivian is a lease, do they have certain mileage not to exceed over your contract?
12,000 miles a year
That was fun.!
By then you'll have the free adapter Rivian will give you for Tesla charging. I wouldn't let it hold you back from getting one.
Really?
Enjoyed the Stuart Smalley content.
(27:00) Go to east Amarillo Tesla SC, new and 250 kWh charging.
First time I heard you say don't move here it's to hot. I live in so cal where I love the weather year round. How do you handle all that heat ? The thing I see at night it doesn't cool down. How do you survive?
Just stay inside haha. 4 months out of the year it's brutal other than that it's great
Yo gjeebs love the content. Got a Tesla model y 2022. Been following for years. Can you do a rivian tow distance video? Want to see the range or else I’m going for a tree killer… jk
Everything’s funny when ur tired 😂
Rivian is ok but Tesla is still the bomb of the world
Rivian the android to Tesla’s iPhone . I just want my 💩 to work. You should do this with a cyber truck. Curious about changing and highway range.
When you said Steve O, I thought it was going to be RJ.
Any reason you didn't try a supercharger on your rivian drive? Since it's open to the network now
I did multiple times on this trip as I showed in the video
@Gjeebs sorry my bad
@@jeffwhiteman7310 all good. Thank you for watching
Thank god there is 2x speed
Ahh the Rivian - such a wonderful anti-tesla un-elon car. TriMax R1S on order and about 3 weeks out from delivery. Been driving my buddies dual gen2 and the build quality is so nice.
