Some of the best videography about anything Rivian on UA-cam. I appreciate you and all this hard work!
Thanks I appreciate that! Lots of hard work but I love sharing these adventures with everyone 🤘🏻
@@ChargeOverland
As a R1S owner, this is the best Rivian related youtube channel hands down! Thank you for your content!
Thanks and appreciate the support!
Fantastic trip!! It was great hanging out with you Stephen!! 👊🏼👏🏻👏🏻 More trips to come! 😃 Loved the video - nicely done buddy!!
Great meeting and hanging out with you Greg😃 Hope we can get out on a trip again soon! Excited to see your video as well 🙌🏻
395 is God’s country, so beautiful. A place you need to go 2-3 times a year to recharge from the modern life
I’d love to make it up to this area 2-3 times a year!
Amazing video! And you keep showing us what the Rivian can do. Thanks so much! That trip looks like the stuff that dreams are made of. Quality work Sir!
Thanks as always for the support!
Solid video. Would've liked a little more dialogue from their perspective at the end, having completed the trail. Think that kind of "Jeep owner angle" is valuable for those non Rivian owners out there who may be interested in electric overlanding or switching over. Keep up the great work!
Great thought! My opinion being a multi Jeep owning family (my white Rubicon on 35” tires is in this video) - the Rivian is an incredible rig. It did awesome through some tough areas. The camera really never does it justice how difficult some of the terrain is. Right out of the box, it is very capable. To be completely honest, I think the only thing that jumped out at me as needing to be improved, is the wheel size. Right now I don’t think there is a 17” wheel for the Rivian, but a nice set of 17” wheels to get a little more sidewall for the tire would be nice to have. Would I buy one? Yep, as an addition to the garage. Stephen has a Wrangler as well, so he’s a Jeep guy with a Rivian. 👊🏼
Thanks for response @trailnewbie 🙌🏻 I’ll definitely keep this feedback in mind moving forward though - I think it’s really good to be sharing some of that info and as @trailnewbie mentioned I’m a Wrangler owner myself so might be worth doing a comparison between the two 👍🏻
What a great trip through the Eastern Sierra. Very cool to see the Rivian keep up with the Jeeps on some technical looking terrain.
I think this is one of my favorites thus far! The scenery and cinematography is simply stunning! Toughest trail so far? Love, love, love!!! And the bear really was playing to the camera, lol! Thank you for taking us along on another beautiful adventure! Can't wait for the next one !
This trip was so much fun to film! 😃 Thanks for the support🙌🏻🙌🏻
Great video. You put the truch through it's paces. Thank you for taking the time to document your adventures!
Thanks and happy you enjoyed it!🙌🏻
Incredible video, well done and what a great trip. Thanks for sharing
Wow the shots you got are breath taking. I paused half way through the video and subbed. The rivian REALLY impresses me the more I see it in action. It really is the ultimate electric adventure vehicle
Thank you and welcome to channel!
Very fun video! Great to see the Rivian tackling some more advanced trails!
It was lots of fun! Getting more comfortable with the truck and excited to continue to push it out on trails
Looks like a fun trail and good trip!
Lots of fun! Thanks for watching🙌🏻🙌🏻
Awesome video man! So many great shots of the truck and nature, couldn't ask for more. Subscribed and can't wait for your next videos
Thanks and welcome to the channel!
That's cool to see what those Rivians are capable of. It did pretty well!
It’s been fun testing it out on more challenging stuff - I still haven’t reached the limit of its potential yet👍🏻
Love the truck.
Love this. We're newish to California and explored the 395 a bit on a 3000 mile road trip from San Diego to central Oregon and back in our R1T. Hope to get back there soon!
Sounds like an amazing trip! I’d love to get up to Oregon at some point
Tremendous!!
Some of the very best shots and editing I've seen on UA-cam. A joy to watch. Couldn't smash the like and subscribe button fast enough.
Thanks so much!🙌🏻🙌🏻
Production Quality is through the roof for such a small channel
Thank you!
What a great trip... thanks so much for sharing! We just bought a Rivian and I hope to enjoy awesome adventures like this!!
Thanks! Congrats on your Rivian and hope you enjoy it!🙌🏻
Love the outtakes and extra footage
Thanks it’s been fun adding that stuff in 😁
GREAT CONTENT!
Thank you!
wow. amazing quality~!
Thank you!
Great video! Glad to see the collaboration 👊. Hope I get to see more Rivians out there on the trail
Thanks! I’m sure over time there will be many more out on the trails 🤘🏻
Great videography and editing as always.
Thank you🙌🏻
The Rivan is probably the only EV that i would buy, because it exudes a unique character of it's own.
I definitely love that it has a very unique character
@@ChargeOverland
There is definitely something special about it.
Great film making. The Rivian tackled some pretty tough stuff on that trail and came through it really nicely.
Thanks! Been fun putting this truck through some more difficult terrain🤘🏻
Stunning videography! Lots of work I bet.
Thanks! It’s lots of work but I really enjoy it 🙌🏻
you know man -- a few years ago I got a Toyota Tacoma, modded it, and went on so many beautiful and fun trails with one of my best friends up in WA. Jeeps are definitely more geared for this kind of offroad stuff (width alone). But I was super impressed with the taco. Sold that and am looking at the R1T and I keep being impressed at how well it keeps up. I think it might be my next rig. Thanks for the posts!
A few of the guys I normally camp with have tacos and they are really capable trucks! I think the Wrangler/Gladiators are always going to excel on really tough off road stuff but I’ve definitely been super impressed with how well my R1T has done off roading🤘🏻
Beautiful country! Thanks for sharing. I think the charging station for Rivian and Tesla and the burger joint there are about the only new things to come to Inyokern since I was a kid. Town looks exactly as it did about 30+ years ago.
It’s a pretty cool contrast of old and and new!
Extraordinary filmography and production! One of the best I have seen on UA-cam. Excellent job, my friend, and please keep them coming!
Appreciate that! Lots more planned 🤘🏻
Siiiiiick vid! Looks like a blast 😄
It was a great trip!🤘🏻
Yeah buddy!!
Great videos man. I would absolutely love to join some of these camp trips when I take delivery of the cyber truck. Awesome transitions and well timed clips. Really enjoying
Thanks! At some point I want to plan a group meet up - would be cool to see some cybertrucks out and about as well🤘🏻
pretty cool stuff
Thanks!
What an adventure. I miss my California. Great production!
Thanks! This was such a great trip for sure🙌🏻
Impressive
Great video by the way
Thanks!
It's cool to see it keep up, now let's see them keep up with the Rivian on pavement 😁
That moon rise though!
I know! That shot came together really well with some help from @justinmcbride
Excellent videography! And up near my neck of the woods! Those areas are great for camping, especially for night sky views. I can't wait for Rivian to open their Adventure Network to other EVs, but they also need to get some sites put in north on Highway 395. The ~400-mile gap between Reno and Bend really needs some support. Alturas and Susanville at the bare minimum.
Thanks it was a beautiful area to explore! I’m also excited to see more RAN chargers open up👍🏻
Great glimpse into a future with off-road spontaneity in EV overlanding.
Nice to see someone actually off-road Rivian. Seems like the motor tuning has gotten better.
I’ve definitely noticed improvement in the off-road drive modes in the year since I started driving it 👍🏻
The bear sighting was cool. To see one in the wild is epic
It was very cool!
The Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires on the Rivian are underrated. I have a set on my Tacoma and trenching through nearly up to a foot of icy/slush/snow going uphill at night on fire road up the mountains. I didn't know if I was going to make it but it was reassuring to know that my truck was going slowly but surely. In the end, we beast through about 3 miles thinking we might see other people by the river but to our surprise...nobody was there and even in the morning when we left. We saw maybe 2 Subaru but they were parked down the hill at the bottom because their all season tires were a no go! I am also upgrading my older Tacoma to the Pirelli as well since they are very tame and quiet on the highway which I probably use 90%+ most of the time.
They have been a good tire for sure. I’ve been impressed with the balance of on road and off road performance 🙌🏻 Sounds like you had a fun trip in the snow!
awesome video i love this trail. i flooded my engine in my honda crv crossing the river to the hot springs lol
Flooding your engine doesn’t sound like fun😬 Definitely a great trail!
great videography and fantastic views man! NICE trail too and amazing camp site!!!!! :)))). Which trail is that btw? Impressive what the Rivian can tackle and do as well!!!!
Thanks! This was part of the Carson River East Fork trail and another trail that connected us back to 395👍🏻
@Rivian. Europe waits for you.. Need the R1s here,
Great video! Keep it up. Love the rig and I enjoy seeing what it can do. I can't wait for more EV makers to do what Rivian is doing.
Thanks! I’m excited to see where this EV space goes over the next few years for sure!
Hi Stephen, nice video! I just noticed that's our truck parked next to you at the Truckee charge point. What a coincidence, I also think we're neighbors. Live in the same C-village in Irvine. See you around!👍
Very cool! See you out there🙌🏻
Rivian are all over Truckee now. Awesome truck
Cool to see more of them out and about🤘🏻
Always take my time on 395 . Driving distance and changing time will only get better with advancement coming. 👍
Yup very true!
Great video. Thank you for it! I am local, and I know this trail pretty well. I did it many times with my Jeep. Good job doing it with Rivian! But, honestly, I will continue driving it with my Jeep and not with my Rivian R1T. The reason is pretty simple. This trail has the potential to damage your truck. And any damage will be much more costly on Rivian than on JL Wrangler. This is the main problem with Rivian and offroading. I will use my Rivian for easier offroading, and I will keep my JL for more serious trails like this one :-)
That’s fair! At this point much cheaper to repair a wrangler that’s for sure. Glad you enjoyed the video🤘🏻
3 of my favorite UA-camrs....Rivian is looking better and better. Just needs to tow a little better before I pull the trigger on one.
I wonder how the range will be with towing and the new Dual motor 🤔
Thanks for another great video Stephen. Great production quality, and enough stats to geek over.
Some requests: Could you go over the other rigs and plug their channel next time? Would love to know what they're running. Also, would it be too much to ask that you state in a graphic the setting that you're currently on, like when you were on the rock garden? Would love to know if you were on High or Highest, and on Rock Climbing, or just Off-Road, Thanks again.
Thanks and also really appreciate the requests! I would love to get into more details on other vehicles I’m with and also will make note to include the drive modes I’m using as well👍🏻👍🏻
For that rock section I used the Highest ride height and just the standard All Terrain off road mode. Definitely could have ran it in Rock Crawl as well.
Here’s the answer for my rig in the video:
2021 Wrangler JLU Rubicon on a 2.5” EVO lift and 35” Nitto Trail Grapplers 😊
@@TrailNewbie Looks like you got some good video of the Rivian. Everyone should go check out his channel for this great footage..
Nice job. You should check out Thuren Fabrication in Bend, OR. They have a really nice custom Rivian wheel and tire set-up for this type of wheeling.
Will have to look them up!
One thing i will say is the rivian at least won't chase away the wildlife, very quiet, the sxs crowd and jeeps that just have to have the 10 series muffler so they are as loud as possible just chase everything away. They dont know what they are missing, my rig is a big v8, but i went to a lot of effort to keep it quiet, the rivian definitely needs a lift and tires,
I do really enjoy being out on trail and not having lots of engine noise👍🏻 The air suspension makes a lift somewhat unnecessary (highest mode has 15” of ground clearance) but I plan on going with a more aggressive tire when I replace my current OEM ones.
Great video! Who makes your iPhone holder that sits btwn the wheel and the main Rivian screen?
Excellent video and congratulations on your Rivian, an amazing truck to go off-road! Which software are you using to create the maps in your videos with places and distances?
Thanks! I use a combination of Photoshop and Premiere Pro
That truck is amazing. It's good to see electric vehicles this capable
I agree🤘🏻
We past the guys from Rivian on the Rubicon trail. They were exhausted from changing tie rods. They changed over 20 front tie rods.
I would suggest at least getting a set /tools and taken them with you. Didn’t take them very long to change, maybe 30 min.
The SUVs did much better.
Cool video.
Thanks - I’ll keep this in mind if I tackle some really serious trails!
Thanks for the content. Did you have the tape covering the roof aero slots for this trip?
Not on this trip! I’m still developing an actual part that can be used in the spoiler - should have more on that in the coming weeks👍🏻
Can you tell us what mode you put the truck in to go up the rocky stair case at 17:31 in? I love my R1T! nice to see you put your truck through the paces to see what it is capable of. Rivian should sponsor you for sure you really push the R1T to the limits.
I definitely need to start including this in future videos - I had the truck in Off-Road All Terrain at the highest ride height
I think EV’s are impressive. But the range just isn’t there yet. Running California highways and knifing in to public lands to camp is great. But Canada or Alaska? Where you fill jerry cans just to make the trip? It has its limitations. Nice video!👍
Totally agree with you! I’ve touched on this in other videos - still some areas that EVs just can’t easily travel to. As the charging infrastructure expands and range improves this will get better but going to take some years.
Great video! What would you rate the first part of the trail up to camp? Looked to me like about a 3 out of 10 with the challenging part being the trail back.
Sadly, I had issues with the 350kWh EA chargers in Bridgeport back in June and had to use the 150 as well. Wouldn’t be surprised if it hasn’t been fixed since June… can’t wait for the Lee Vining RAN to open so we can skip that EA all together :)
I’d say your estimate of the difficulty is pretty spot on! First section was fairly easy and the second day on the way out was probably a 6/10.
Guess that EA charger has been down for awhile 🙄 Definitely excited for more RAN chargers to be opening up!
Great video! This may be a dumb question. Do you carry a porta potty?
Not dumb at all! I have a bucket and small privacy tent I use when out with other people👍🏻Details are in this video around the 15:30 mark if you’re interested:
ua-cam.com/video/eGJ1MOxvs9k/v-deo.htmlsi=3_5O-SUfQmZAPcn_
Nice video thanks. Looking for rivian off road videos and not too many yet. Quick question you posted the total mileage and the after trail battery state but I can not calculate how many miles was the actual trail/portion where you did not charge over the weekend. Do you remember what that mileage was? Traying to understand actual off roading performance
I think the overall off road section was around 12miles which would be about 1% per mile. This is more than I’ve seen on other trips but definitely was one of the more challenging trails I’ve taken this on so far.
YOu want to stop at the Whoa Nelly Deli in Lee Vining California, super food!
I thought you painted your bumper white for a second, but that's just good ol'dirt
Haha yup! 🤘🏻
I'm just about to get my R1S (early reservation holder), need to finalize the order but can't decide between Quad vs Dual motor. Dual gives more range and still very decent off-road. Any suggestions? Also, would you go for under-body shield?
This is a tough one! Dual vs Quad motor is a question of what’s more important to you - the quad will likely be better on difficult off road trails and you’ll get more range with the dual. If your priority is ultimate capability I’m guessing the Quad will be best but if you are just looking to do some light off roading then Dual will likely be fine. I haven’t driven the Dual motor yet though so this is completely based off what I’m reading and watching. For the underbody shield I would 100% check that box.
sorry we missed you in Trona. Check out Trails drive in if you need a burger or ice cream next time you're in town! 🍟🍔🍦
Sounds good will do!
How can you guys be on that river and not fish!?
Ill get one
So how long did each of those three stops on the way up take?
All the info is in the video 👍🏻
How’d the paint hold up to rubbing with the trees/bushes?
Overall fine - I definitely have some pinstripes but that’s to be expected
Hey Stephen, Did you change to the 20" Darks?
Yes I did!
@@ChargeOverland Same here! I started with the 21” Road Wheels and after one year of ownership, I finally purchased the 20” darks. 👍. Did one trip to Tahoe and climbed up to Genoa Peak in the snow, that was a blast.
as long as you don't dent the fender. if you do, it's totaled
the rivian looks like a baby even next to the small wrnagler lmao
Good to see how the Rivian handles, but it was a shame you only showed the efficiency stats for the on-road parts! Seems like you didn't use much battery off-road, but I don't think you said how long the trail was.
We covered around 12 miles on trail and this was definitely the most battery drain I’ve seen while off roading - I’m guessing because it was fairly technical and slow going
@@ChargeOverland So looks like the battery went from 95% down to 53% from 12 miles off-roading and about 50 miles on road? That is quite a lot. Useful to know, thanks :) I'm planning to get a Cybertruck for overlanding, so range on tricky terrain is a key consideration.
Do you find that the truck's stated mileage in the 'tank" is close to what you actually get? Love my Tesla, but I know not to trust what's in the 'tank'. However when I plug in a destination to the car's computer, the car will tell me arriving with XX% and I do get close to that.
Ive actually found that in most situations the Rivian shows a much more conservative number than what it delivers. Quite a few trips where the charge on arrival ends up being higher than originally stated at the beginning of the drive👍🏻 The only time I am a little more cautious is if I know I’ll be covering a lot of miles off road on challenging terrain.
Are you still on the original set of pirelli scorpion tires?
Yes but due for new tires! More on that coming soon👍🏻
What model camera did you use?
My primary camera is a Sony A7iii 👍🏻
Anytime that Matt’s Off Road Recovery music pops up on other channels it really throws me off
Very curious to know how much time was spent (total) waiting for each charge up.
I show all that info in the video 👍🏻
Great vid. I'm a die hard Jeep fanboy ('18/JLU 6sp 3.5" lift and 35's; and a '23/JLUR 4xe, stock) but I'm also a Rivian shareholder. Nice to see that overlanding in a Rivian isn't a stretch, even in stock form. The additional 3 odd hours tacked on to your drive each way coming and going is still a deal breaker for me, but for those who plan their stops and aren't sitting playing video games like in a Tesla, I guess it works. This rig is a much better real world all arounder than a Tesla and the range doesn't seem inflated (like the Tesla). Keep posting. Good content, bro.
I’ve got a 18’ JL Rubicon with 35s as well🤘🏻Honestly since getting the Rivian I haven’t taken the Jeep out much though! Totally understand not wanting to make the longer stops for charging - it definitely takes a little getting used to. Thanks for watching man!
I just want to preface with I'm not trying to be hostile. I just wanted to say that I am a Tesla owner and have taken a few very long road trips and I don't think I've ever seen anyone playing games on it while charging. Generally, at least for me and owners I've observed, charging stops tend to be 15-20 minutes and favor the 15 minutes. It's usually only enough time to use the bathroom, maybe eat or stretch and then off again so not much time actually sitting in the car at stops. Not to say road trips aren't longer in an EV though because they definitely are. You also have every right to not like Tesla, just wanted to share my experience is all :).
@@Jaxamuss I didn't mean to imply that everyone who has a Tesla sits and plays games. My buddies with their Teslas brag that they play games using the steering wheel in the car and spend 45 minutes charging. Good that you can do what you need in 15 minutes. But, I, personally, don't want to plan my trip around charging stations. I'm a fan of EV's having owned one for 2 years and now a PHEV Wrangler Rubicon. I have stock in Rivian, Lucid, EVgo, charge point and others. I know that electrification is the future. But until I can go anywhere spontaneously without having to worry about my state of charge and can store additional energy (like a 5 gallon can of fuel), I'll stick to investing and not implementing.
@@anthonyp6462 All of those points are totally fair and valid. I think that the transition to an EV makes the most sense when its comparable to or is better suited to your needs than a combustion. Its getting there quickly I think so hopefully there will be one soon that fits your needs and life style so you can comfortably make the transition and begin the implementation! :)
So ~10% used while on trail. How many total miles of trail did you do?
Around 12 miles on trail - probably the most battery drain I’ve seen while off roading but it was definitely slow going
I do significant offroading myself, and (like Justin McBride) I can't imagine going out there without a winch on my rig. I've used my winch on many occasions to recover both my rig and the rigs of others. It is one of the most valuable pieces of safety gear you can bring. How would one do that with a Rivian? Even ignoring the bumper/mounting concerns, what about powering one? Is using an electric winch on a Rivian even thinkable? Thanks for your thoughts.
I’m sure the aftermarket will solve this but for the moment I haven’t seen any good solutions. The electrical side of it seems possible but still would need to design a bumper that can accommodate a winch. I totally understand for more challenging off road trails this is a very important piece of equipment to have.
@@ChargeOverland One option might be a trailer hitch mount. There are winch cradles available that go in the hitch receiver. You'd have to run heavy wires to the rear (e.g. using Anderson connectors) but it's totally doable. If a winch drew 450 Amps and you need to run it for, say, 2 minutes, what percentage of the Rivian's charge would you think that would consume? Do you think that would reduce it's range by a serious amount?
Could you take a generator with you, and some gas to power it, and use it to charge the Rivian while you are on the trails.
Sure
Is it possible to charge it with solar panels? Just to get like 10 miles of range per in case you're in the middle of nowhere.
From my understanding the amount of solar panels you’d need would be massive and very expensive just to provide enough energy. Not my area of expertise but pretty sure it’s not possible at this point.
@@ChargeOverland There are some EV companies working on solar roofs that can give up to 40 miles of charge per day. If you got a GFC camper and covered the roof with solar panels, you could probably achieve 10-20 miles of range per day,
This video is going to be the one that breaks my bothers bank accounts hahaha he’s a new owner of a rivian and he’s been having this bug to overland it. Haha you have a simple clean sleek setup which is probably what he is going to look for..do you have a IG ?
Haha that’s awesome! I’m also on IG same name as here:
chargeoverland
You may need new tires when you finish.
I drive a Gladiator but really like the Rivian, it is hands down the one EV I'd most likely drive.
I'm curious about the cost of the charges you did, what is the average going from 30% to 99%? It looked like charging times were around 45 minutes, is that correct?
Other than the EA charger that he had to use at the end, the Rivian chargers are free. He planned his route perfectly!
As @jaggorri mentioned all the Rivian chargers were free👍🏻 The stop at ElectrifyAmerica toward the end cost $26
@@ChargeOverland what I'm wondering is what it costs to put a full charge, or 80% to go about 300 miles if one had to pay for it. Just for a comparison vs gassing up an ice vehicle. Meaning, are EV's more, less or about the same to run as an ice vehicle that gets decent mileage. Not my Gladiator, that's a given...😢
Ok gotcha! So depends on the charging network but on average I’ve paid around $35-40 for charging from around 10%-90% on previous trips I’ve taken. Definitely cheaper than filling up an ICE vehicle at least where I leave
What’s the iPhone holder you have?
It’s a combination of a 3d printed parted and a SpigenPro MagSafe mount - details in this video:

You're welcome
I can't imagine that the Rivian wouldn't be able to manage most "overland" trails. I think most rigs in the "overlanding" category are built way beyond what they will ever actually see. My fear with a Rivian is if one ever damages the body panels, I've see the cost to replace, and it's staggeringly expensive.
Tbh, and this isn't a knock, but i didn't see anything on the video that would necessitate 35-37" tires, again, not a knock, but just the reality of 99% of the overlanding community. I would certainly consider a Rivian (if i could afford one), and although even for 99% of what i do i wouldent need them, but if i couldn't put at least 33's on it, would sort of be a deal breaker.
I'm curious if there are any issues with water crossings? Say 24-30" deep?
I agree that there are many ‘overbuilt’ rigs out there for the trails/terrain they are actually covering but also people are free to customize and spend money on their vehicles however they want.
I’ve seen a few things on repairs but there isn’t enough information out there for me to worry about that just yet.
Good news is you can get the Rivian with 34” tires stock and water fording depth is just over 40” 🤘🏻
How long does it take to charge to 100%?
That’s a very broad question because it depends on what your starting charge is and how fast the charger you’re using is. I’ve never run my truck down to 0% and then charged to 100% but for many trips I’ve charged from 10-15% up to 90-95% and it takes about an hour. Definitely longer than some people want to be waiting but I normally plan these stops when I’m ready for a meal and it’s goes by pretty quick👍🏻
Does rivian have LFP batteries
Not at the moment but I’ve seen a few articles saying future trucks will use LFP packs
Try driving that Rivian during the winter, in the cold. Not going far, EV's are not practical during cold days.
Thus, why most of these EV video's are in southern California or Florida. A Midwest winter will bring these vehicles to their knees.
Interested to know what’s been your experience with cold weather range loss? Obviously depends on quite a few factors (actual temp, hvac, terrain etc..) but from the research I’ve done looks like worst case you are going to get 60-70% of the normal range which is still 190-220 miles
@@ChargeOverland more like 15% range loss in my experience but will be worse if you start off cold, ie not garaged. Other EVs may be worse considering relative efficiency
Wish Rivian would install their chargers in the Midwest, where every vehicle is manufactured, rather than blanket California like everyone else . Major disappointment.
I think the addition of NACS(Tesla) compatibility should help with this but yeah I would love to see Rivian chargers everywhere
You should have carried an extra battery
For what? I had plenty of charge 🤔
