Necrotic Nick- I've jammed it multiple times already and I dig it. I love this album art but I tend to love all of Lewandowski's art. He will be missed.
The best kind of death metal! ;-) Well, along with early Suffocation, Gorguts (1998-present), Cryptopsy (1996 - 2000) and maybe a handful more technical death bands.
Necrotic Nick- I think their reenergized sound from the self-titled carried over to this one. Honestly, Obituary is one of those bands that I really don't need them to stray from their formula for me to enjoy them. They just need to deliver a solid Obituary album and that's what they did.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, Be Warned is a new favorite of mine. When I heard that disgusting bend in the riff I think I made a face like someone farted directly in my nose. So much stank on that riff.
Necrotic Nick- I mean there's still a ton of thrashy, blast beat driven Floridian death metal out there but that's never really been Obituary's thing. They're a groove machine and their love of Celtic Frost and Hellhammer really comes out in their songwriting which gives them a different sound compared to a lot of their peers.
I was a little underwhelmed by the singles, but hearing the whole album, I love it! True the reverb on vocals, as well as the more Cause of Death style of vocal edits really work. Interesting that Tardy's vocals have gotten higher register. Maybe that's what happens to vocals from years of doing it? I'd place this above self titled, after first three or four albums.
Necrotic Nick- I thought the singles were OK but the album as a whole killed. I think I was kinda meh on the singles on the self-titled too when they dropped but I ended up being blown away by the album as a whole so I guess there's a pattern forming here lol. I think the higher register might be less rough on his vocals in general and he's till able to project them well. The added reverb definitely gives it the classic sound on here and adds so much to the creepy atmosphere. Regardless, I dig this one and these last 2 albums have been some of their best material since their early years.
Necrotic Nick- That tour was killer. The only thing I didn't like about Obituary's set was they didn't play Chopped in Half but everything they played was killer so it's not much of a complaint.
@@thrallsofmetal agreed! The opened with Redneck Stomp but not many other “classics” I did think Carcass was a little better live but I am a Carcass guy thru and thru haha 🤘

Necrotic Nick- Obituary is mainstream? That's news to me. I'd say they're well known to longtime death metal fans but I'd hardly call them "mainstream". Regardless, it's a killer album.

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I really dig this one but it's still hard to say if I like this one more than the self-titled from 2017. Both are definitely some of the best material they've released here lately. I hope they make it out to South Africa one of these days so you get a chance to see them live. They're amazing live.
Necrotic Nick- Obituary knows how to bring the riffs and there's some killer standout ones on here. They flat out heaviness of Be Warned is jaw-dropping.
I saw Obituary in 2016 in Vancouver opening for Cannibal Corpse along with Cryptopsy (who were terrible that night) and Abysmal Dawn. Also, Chris Reifert is releasing the second album from one of his projects, Siege of Power, where is only on vocals. That album is called This is Tomorrow and will be released on February 17th!
The first Death Metal band I was introduced to (by my dad) was Obituary (circa '91'). Hands down one of my DM favorites! With that said, I haven't been as enthusiastic about their body of work the last 15 plus years. Lots of recycled riffs and filler. They'll have 2-3 solid tracks, a few meandering tracks, and the rest of it is pretty forgettable. Plan on listening to this tonight. Cautiously optimistic Edit: Just got finished with it. Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised. Mainly killer, with some filler. The second half of the material is definitely the strongest (oddly enough). Also agree with the one guy on this video about the production. It is a little muddy. Aside from that, I can see myself revisiting the record in the future. 7/10
Necrotic Nick- They were the 2nd death metal band I ever got into after Cannibal Corpse and I just loved their sinister, heavy sound. They kinda stood apart from a lot of the Floridian death metal with their predominately groovy sound considering how thrash influenced most of the bands in that scene were. I thought this was a solid album with mostly strong tracks and couple that were just so so. I like the dirtier production because that fits their sound. Overall, it's yet another solid offering from Obituary.
Great review. I love that song “the Wrong Time”. I find myself shaking my booty in public to the groove and then Tardy tells me I have the right mindset, but it’s at the wrong time. Important lesson right there
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, that riff has become more infectious the more I listen to it. Tardy is a wise man but I say shake you ass in public and if people ask what's got you moving, tell them exactly what it is. lol
I'm definitely going to check this one out also since it's been 6 years since their last album it'll be worth a listen. Also the new Overkill record I cannot wait to hear! 🖤💚
Great album. Liked the fuzzier guitar sound too. The sound grows on you, and the riffs are great. John Tardy sounds amazing too. Not sure how after all these years, but he is still killing it.
Necrotic Nick- I dig this one a lot. I've always been a big fan of Trevor's swampy guitar tone but John's vocals are still so damn good. He's got one of the best deliveries in all of death metal in my opinion and he's still killing it.
Killer abum, usually when I like the singles I enjoy the album as well. Even after his death, Lewandowski's art continues to ilustrate album covers! I believe 2023 will be a very strong year for death metal!
Necrotic Nick- I thought the singles for this were decent but I think the best material on here were most of the non-singles honestly. This is just a flat out strong album and good continuation of what they recaptured on the self-titled album. The album cover is amazing and great reminder of how great of an artist Lewandowski was. He will certainly be missed.
Necrotic Nick- 100% agreed. I saw them on that tour as well as earlier last year with Gruesome and 200 Stab Wounds in Cleveland. They're always worth the price of admission.
Obituary has a sound, and this is an example of it. The songs for me at times felt samey, but Barely Alive and Without a Conscience are some of my favorite tracks from this record currently. Also I enjoyed the leads off this record, and how I believe it was in Dying of Everything where they were accenting the solo and taking you on a journey through the second half of it, which I thought was pretty cool. The Wrong Time, not the biggest fan, and some of the songs are alright, but overall enjoyable album. 6/10 maybe.
Necrotic Nick- It unmistakably Obituary that is for sure. I think this is a solid continuation of the energy they got back on the self-titled and I think Kenny's leadwork works better with the songs overall this time. The Wrong Time I've really grown to like but I'm still not a huge fan of War. That one is the weakest link on the album for me. I'm not sure if I like this one more than the self-titled one but I'd say it's on par with it at least.
I like this album a lot. The dynamics are great and the songwriting and tracking are both near flawless. My only complaint is that there are several spots that just blend together and seem too oversimplified. Still a killer release though!
Necrotic Nick- I dig it and I do love their straight forward meat and potatoes style but they can hang on a over simplified riff for a bit too long sometimes. That was one of my issues with the song War on this one. Even with the cool atmospheric touches it was a little too bare bones for me. Still, I dug most of this album and I've been jamming it a lot.
This is one of the strongest Obituary albums. This album is effing amazing and sure it's gonna hold its place in my top albums of the year list! It takes a bunch for me to be blown away by a modern old school death metal album and this checks all the marks for me!
Necrotic Nick- I think it's at least on par with the self-titled and has a lot of the same vibe of the first 3. I think they've recaptured some of that older sound on these last two and you can just feel that the band has a ton of energy again. This was every bit worth the wait and a great way to kick off 2023.
Necrotic Nick- This might be your gateway into the style overall then because a lot of their stuff sounds like this and Obituary's influence is all over death metal in general.
Drinking and playing music is about balance. My new band just recorded a song demo. First track after about 4 drinks was perfect. Then track 2 after a 5th and I took like 2 hours on the one song haha
Necrotic Nick- For me, this is a lot better than anything SFU has ever done but it helps that John Tardy has taken care of his voice unlike Barnes. That's just me though. I still think my favorites might be among the first 3 but this is still great.
Unfortunately I went to record store and they forgot order Obituary album so I have to wait a few more days until it gets in hopethey give me good price for the wait
@@thrallsofmetal dude- in a moment of pure fucking crazy.. I just booked a ticket for Voivod UK tour, same city.. same fucking night! Who the fuck puts on two killer metal shows in the same city on the same night!!.. and why didn't I check!! Voivod in the legendary Fleece in Bristol.. think I'll favour that show to be absolutely truthful.. swore it was the next evening and I was just gonna stay up there 48hrs and do both.. Gutted!!
Thanks for asking! I'm all good. Had a bad blackout but no head injuries. The on staff EMT people were awesome. They offered to wheel me back in lol but I just missed half of Amon Amarth thankfully.
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, they're very similar when it comes down to the bulk of their material. The both really love laying on solid riffs and love sticking to that headbanging groove. Definitely a discography worth digging into.
@@thrallsofmetal yeah both seem like they stick to the whole "less can be more" philosophy . but with both bands the riffs are so good I can't really complain. better to me then a lot of metal bands that can be all over the play with their riffs and still dont connect with my stoner brain lol.
There will never be an obituary on Obituary’s cave man straight drilling into your head riffage and just that swampy stomp groove…just filll the room with some thick indica smoke and crankkkk ittttt…the low end is a little lacking but I love the guitar tone so fucking much it doesn’t matter…check out that new kruelty track its fucking killer that albums gonna be sick
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, the bass is present but it's really indistinct on this one. Still, it supplies the low end on the album and Trevor's swampy tone really drives the riffs home. It's a beast of an album and these last 2 albums definitely have some of their best material in years in my opinion.
I am old, I liked Slowly we Rot and Cause of Death when they came out because well, they were really good. Then came The End Complete and I wore that album out more than once, it took them to a whole new level, and ever since then I have been a fan. Even though their stuff after that was a little underwhelming until "Obituary" was released which brought them back into fold of my favorites. Dying of Everything is exactly what I want from an Obituary album groovy, muddy, gritty, and all around awesome.
Necrotic Nick- I'm old as well and I've been listening to this band since I was in high school when I snagged the single for Don't Care on whim and was blown away. While there have been some weaker albums in their discography they have been on fire with these last two. I feel like they dug deep and recaptured some of that energy from the first 3 album again. It's great to see them back to form again.
Nothing to do with Obituary but Nick do you know the German Thrash/Death band Protector ? To me they're one of the most underrated bands I've ever heard of them and when I first listened to their 1991 album "A Shedding of Skin" produced by Harris Johns, damn I I was stuck, for me it manages to approach a Pleasure to Kill or even a Sodom, it's a real killer, I don't understand why they are not recognized as much as the others they really deserve it, and even the rest of their discography is really good, if some don't know I recommend go ahead with your eyes closed.
Necrotic Nick- Very familiar with that band actually. I own most of there albums and A Shedding of Skin was where I started. They've always been a more underground band but they definitely deserve more attention in my opinion. Their last album was killer too if you haven't checked that one out.
Am i blind and just missed it, which is possible lol, but do you guys have a ranking on Obituary? This album is obituary. I literally woke my wife up with the childrens books comment. Its hard to say why obituary is awesome. Its like trying to describe gravy.
This album is awesome, Obituary are awesome. That's about all I can say. Great way to start the new year, and this is definitely a solid benchmark for everything to come. Could it end up on my year end list? Too early to tell for certain, but I have a feeling it will be as I'm probably gonna be returning to it very often throughout the year. If the other releases for this year are this good then we're in for an amazing year! 🤘🤘
Necrotic Nick- Hard agree. I've been a fan since I was a teen and I still return to this band quite often and I think this is legit the perfect way to kick off the new year. I've been jamming it a lot and while it's too early to say this album has good odds of being a contender for my year end list.
Necrotic Nick- I dig it but I can see what you're saying. They have a particular sound and they don't deviate much from their sound. Generally that can be a turn off after awhile for me but something about this band allows me to move past that. I don't really want them to change that much since they have such a great sound. I'm not sure if I like this one or the self-titled more but I know I dig both more than I have a lot of their albums past the first 3.
Solid album but repetitive. Kind of like the AC/DC of death metal. Or is that Amon Amarth by now? Either way, doesn't disappoint but doesn't break any barriers. It's Obituary
Necrotic Nick- They're one of those bands where I really don't need them to break any new ground but rather just deliver what they do well. I think they did that pretty well here.
Necrotic Nick- Seems like they're still relevant to me. People still go see them live and I imagine their BBQ sauce is pretty damn good. They do love their cookouts.
Necrotic Nick- We do but the concert promoters that Jon and Miller know work out of Denver and it's a bigger city with a bigger scene so we decided it would probably do better there.
It's just ok..what the hell happened with the last 3 tracks? Sad, boring, and overall...disappointing... 3.5/5 and that's being generous. The first 5 were absolutely nasty, then there's a lot of fade outs with arbitrary/forced breakdowns...dammit.
Necrotic Nick- I thought the back half was stronger than the front half. The first 3 were good but I thought War was probably the weakest track on the album. The riffs really came out to play on the back half and Be Warned is a deathdoom beast of a song.
@@MoSweiti666 This thing sounds like they shat it out during the course of two afternoons. I do realize that Obituary is a band that after the first two (great!) records mainly wallowed in mediocrity (though that self-titled album from 2017 was a nice surprise), so my expectations are always low, but "Dying of Everything" managed to go riiiight under them...
@@rutbuck121 Well, if being a fan means blindly eating up everything a band puts out, however mediocre it may be, then no, I'm not a fan. If being a fan means recognizing that there was greatness once and that Obituary could be delivering so much more, if they just got their asses up, then I am a fan. Because the last record delivered. This one does not.
Ha ha I'm watching this on my laptop that has an Ahab sticker on it obviously paying comic homage to Obituary ...the sticker is Slowly We Row with Ahab written in the Obituary lettering
Love Obituary ❤ Why don’t you guys ever play any music from the album . Just seen an review of the new Obituary album Dying of Everything on banger and they played lots of music from the album ?
Necrotic Nick- Long time fan here. We don't play sections from the album because we don't want to deal with an copyright issues and keep it focused on the discussion.
I stop getting into obituary years ago after they got uptight with money, and adding taxes on their merch. This album reminds me of Pantera, a bunch of canoes.🛶
Necrotic Nick- It could be because they're being forced to cough up money to the venues for a merch fee at the end of the night. They've always been cool with me and honestly have had reasonably priced merch almost every time I saw them.
Listened to it twice today. Top Shelf Obituary. 100%. Also, probably the best cover art since End Complete, in my opinion.

Obituary is an example of death metal that doesn't have to be technical to be good

The best kind of death metal! ;-) Well, along with early Suffocation, Gorguts (1998-present), Cryptopsy (1996 - 2000) and maybe a handful more technical death bands.

Important lesson right there
Awesome comment lol
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, that riff has become more infectious the more I listen to it. Tardy is a wise man but I say shake you ass in public and if people ask what's got you moving, tell them exactly what it is. lol
Great review and I’ll be deep diving this record hard this weekend
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! This one has already got multiple spins here and it's a banger for sure.
@@thrallsofmetal yep I enjoy the fuck outta that record. Absolutely killer!
I'm definitely going to check this one out also since it's been 6 years since their last album it'll be worth a listen. Also the new Overkill record I cannot wait to hear! 🖤💚
Necrotic Nick- This has been totally worth the long wait. I'm also looking forward to the new Overkill as well.
Really Heavy atmospheric Obituary album,Great album from Obituary from start to finish.
Necrotic Nick- Another killer one from Obituary and I like that this one has just a touch more atmosphere than the last one.
Thanks for great review 👍
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man!
It's a BANGER!
Necrotic Nick- Agreed!
Obituary is so good live. Just saw them again on the Amon Heathen tour and they kicked ass. Just ordered it and looking forward to many spins.
Necrotic Nick- 100% agreed. I saw them on that tour as well as earlier last year with Gruesome and 200 Stab Wounds in Cleveland. They're always worth the price of admission.
Seen Obituary twice in Boston, they just fucking kill it live. The second time I saw them the mosh pit was insane.
Bad Ass album. Getting better with each listen.
Necrotic Nick- Agreed! I've been having a blast jamming this one while driving around.
The title track is honestly my favourite Obituary track since the debut
Necrotic Nick- Man, that's a tough call because I love a lot of Obituary and those first 3 albums are golden still but this album is killer for sure.
@@thrallsofmetal just to clarify, mainly talking about that track in particular. When it comes to full albums I would still put this below the first 3
Hey guys, when are we gonna see an obituary albums ranked? Very surprised I haven't seen one
Not a big fan of Obituary or old school Death Metal, but this album is great! Been listening to it almost nonstop since it came out.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I've seen my buddies start practicing sober and descend into drunken mayhem lol
Going to record store today see if I can get Obituary new album
Necrotic Nick- I hope you get it soon.
reminds me of old school six feet under, wich is a VERY good thing, it might be my favorite obituary album ever, after only 1 listen ;)
Necrotic Nick- For me, this is a lot better than anything SFU has ever done but it helps that John Tardy has taken care of his voice unlike Barnes. That's just me though. I still think my favorites might be among the first 3 but this is still great.
Their best since the early 90's for me, 4/5.
Necrotic Nick- I dig it but I'm still not sure if I like the self-titled more than this one yet. I still need more listens.
Unfortunately I went to record store and they forgot order Obituary album so I have to wait a few more days until it gets in hopethey give me good price for the wait
Necrotic Nick- They'll probably charge you the same. Record stores need to make they're cut to stay open you know.
Good review.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man!
I hear alot of slayer riffing style and I'm definitely om with that
Necrotic Nick- When they do break into thrashier material there's definitely some Slayer to it for sure.
just heard it amazing
Necrotic Nick- Killer album once again.
@@thrallsofmetal agree
The opening is absolutely is just beautiful abuse, "Without a Conscience," brutality defined.
All fucking in guys. It's a tour I'm definitely going to do in the UK.. Just got Corpse tickets for April \m/
Necrotic Nick- Nice! Enjoy the show, man!
Gutted!!
Great reviews..
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man!
I just saw Obituary in November and I got to hear" The Wrong Time" time. It was badass. I had to get wheel-chaired out.
Necrotic Nick- I got to see them on that tour in November in Detroit and they killed it. Hope you're alright, dude.
Thanks for asking! I'm all good. Had a bad blackout but no head injuries. The on staff EMT people were awesome. They offered to wheel me back in lol but I just missed half of Amon Amarth thankfully.
just done with the first listen and i gotta say By The Dawn catched me the most of all the tracks.
Necrotic Nick- That's a solid track for sure. I like the almost Celtic Frost vibe on that one.
Hmm I really like bolt thrower a lot and never really listened to obituary and this album hits the same sweet spots that bolt thrower does for me.
Off topic. What is the name of the song at the beginning of all of your videos?
Necrotic Nick- That's Shred and Rin's old band Constricted. The song is called "Third Generation".
I've been jamming it a lot and while it's too early to say this album has good odds of being a contender for my year end list.
what month is denver deathfest
Necrotic Nick- It'll be in April from the 20th to the 22nd.
@@thrallsofmetal right how much are tickets
Necrotic Nick- $25 for a single day or $60 for all 3 days of the fest.
@@thrallsofmetal is the same for uk money as well
Oh yes, Ken Andrews is one of the most amazing guitarists nobody knows about.
I like the album, but it sounds a bit samey to me. I loved their previous self-titled album & was hoping for a progression from that.
What can u say it's fucken obituary I like what Ive heard so far they never disappoint
1/ 🔟
Necrotic Nick- Not an Obituary fan?
@@thrallsofmetal i was a fan of their music when they were relevant, before they branded BBQ sauce etc
Necrotic Nick- Seems like they're still relevant to me. People still go see them live and I imagine their BBQ sauce is pretty damn good. They do love their cookouts.
absolutely nothing of theirs has even mildly impressed me since The End Complete
Necrotic Nick- Not even the self-titled album from 2017? That one got a lot of love from the long time fans honestly.
I thought you guys lived in Ohio?? Why Denver for your fest??
I think this is the worst Obituary album of them all... even worse than "Frozen in Time" (hard to believe, I know)...
Funny cause I haven’t loved one since frozen in time. Gonna check out the new one soon
Not gonna lie, you're the only one I've seen say that.
I don't get why it's "the worst", but personally I think it's one of their best.
@@Peroy1 Then your not even an Obituary fan so why you even here commenting on it?!
This review makes me feel good and my heart feels like it’s being hugged ❤️🔥❤️🩹
Necrotic Nick- Good death metal should feel that way in my opinion.
Ha ha I'm watching this on my laptop that has an Ahab sticker on it obviously paying comic homage to Obituary ...the sticker is Slowly We Row with Ahab written in the Obituary lettering
Necrotic Nick- Damn! The week these dropped was legit the perfect week for that sticker lol.
Saw them live a coupla weeks ago, fookin awesome! Barely saw them on stage because I couldn’t stop hedbangin! 😂
Love Obituary ❤
Why don’t you guys ever play any music from the album .
Just seen an review of the new Obituary album Dying of Everything on banger and they played lots of music from the album ?
Necrotic Nick- Long time fan here. We don't play sections from the album because we don't want to deal with an copyright issues and keep it focused on the discussion.
Seems to me they did half this album killer and the other half not so killer still not an awful obituary album aye 🤘💯😋👊
Necrotic Nick- I think if they mixed up the tracks a bit it might flow a bit better. The back half was a lot stronger than the front half.
@@thrallsofmetal indeed , not an bad album though 😋
I stop getting into obituary years ago after they got uptight with money, and adding taxes on their merch.
This album reminds me of Pantera, a bunch of canoes.🛶
Necrotic Nick- It could be because they're being forced to cough up money to the venues for a merch fee at the end of the night. They've always been cool with me and honestly have had reasonably priced merch almost every time I saw them.
