Check out my FF1 Retrospective if you want to learn more about what the original version of the game was like: ua-cam.com/video/2sHG3lSdeLc/v-deo.html
For someone who has never played the original FF, I am really enjoying this! It’s cool to see how the series started out and the elements that are still around today
It's great that modern audiences get a fresh chance to see how it all started! 😀
Play the original on an emulator and you will see that some elements were changed and the remaster is what changed them. The most obvious is that the series started off using orbs not crystals.
It was a 3D remake before but they had to remove for some reason, and a lot of review complaints said they didn’t the 3D and wanted to bring back the pixels … look at this now. 😡
@@kNOwWHEREtoR1 In the Japanese version they were called crystals, they were only orbs in the English version
The psp version is was better.
I just want these pixel remasters on the switch and I’d be overjoyed!
Agreed!
It's called the steam deck :)
Yeah, I don't understand why they aren't there.
Just play em on deck
Agreed!
I feel like this is a missed opportunity for Square. I would love to see physical copies sold as a compilation at full price for console. These games would pair perfectly with something like the Switch.
Agreed! If I'm being cynical, I think Square wants to wait until everyone has bought it on Steam and Mobile before launching the Switch ports so we can buy it again there 😂
Dude, if all of them get released on Switch. That would be amazing.
@@sebastiancintron29 perfect final fantasy handheld if so, all mainline games aside from ff13 onward and the MMOs
@@TofuSG98 I don't know about XI, but I'd love to have XIV on the go to do some content. Just for secondary content like beast tribes and the like
What just happened to the 3D Remake for FF1?
PSP version is better in content and graphics but the Pixel Remaster have better music and ambiance.
I prefer the graphics in this one but it's basically a personal preference at this point, PSP is great too 😀
Yeah, I had that reaction too.
When I was playing FF3PR I finally accepted that these are remakes of the NES games and not trying to look like SNES or PSX gen games. That said, I'm wondering if there is going to be more criticism and hostility when SE gets around to 5 and 6. Folks are still sore over those two games.
@@Altercate Why do you prefer a downgraded version of the graphics? While you may like them, you cannot say the current graphics are an improvement over the PSP version.
I'm sad that this isn't just the PSP Version available in full Screen on PC. PSP sprites are a lot better imo and cut content is sad to see as well.
Admittedly I'm a little dissapointed here
I feel the PSP sprites are too huge and too high res, jarringly so. Like the first enemies you encounter in Final Fantasy 4 PSP already fill the entire screen, but that should be saved for boss sprites. Pixel art closer to the original is more charming, IMO. I've always liked the PS1 graphics better than the PSP graphics, too. That's not to say I didn't love and enjoy the PSP versions, I did. But I prefer the remaster, art-wise.
My personal favorite is the PSP version, the graphics there look best out of all version. Imagine if HD2D (the people who made Octopath Traveler and are remaking DQIII) decided to remake the first two games and release them in one bundle, now THAT would be the best remake of these games! The music for the pixel remasters are AMAZING, though I will say that there's a few tracks where I prefer the PSP versions
Thanks for commenting! I don't personally like the PSP graphics for the FF games, but I can see why people prefer them! It really comes down to a matter of taste with the pixel remasters imo... But agreed that the remastered soundtrack is amazing! 😀
If everything is HD whatever, then it's just not unique anymore.
@@rockdesu Yeah, i agree.
What i do to enjoy even more the PSP version? : PSP - Cable component - HDTV 1080P - Experience enjoyable as hell.
Also, the psp version have the most content which is why its still the best version.
@@setro5582 Oh yeah, more content means better game now. Sadly that more content was shitty copy paste bullcrap.
I've gone back to the PS1 version. The difficulty level the devs carefully planned around is present here, with the modernity of a post-NES game and pretty great music.
GBA and PSP are butchered beyond restoration. Broken difficulty.
I honestly don't really care that much about the bonus content that was skipped out since I usually don’t care for those. But I really enjoyed the rearranged music in all 3 games, and there easily the best part about these remasters.
Can’t wait to hear how FF4 - 6 will sound especially 5 and 6 since there music has been rearranged yet.
I agree about the bonus content. It would be great if it were there, but I personally don't tend to do that sort of stuff, at least in these older titles.
Definitely looking forward to 4-6! 😀
Agreed. The bonus content is at best unnecessary fluff to check a box and at worst an active detraction from the legacy of the originals (Looking at you FFIV The After Years) so I don't miss it at all. What does bother me immensely is the lack of a Switch port and that godawful font choice.
Well, 5 and 6 did have GBA rearrangements for them... But that was GBA, how could it be better than SNES with a worse sound card.
Then there was 5's rearrangement on PS1... Eeeeugh still give me chills
I find the PSP version to be better at face value as this version lacks the extra content such as the Dawn of Souls.
@Brenton Lee Content wise, PSP version is definitely the best! I get that it would be a lot of work to redo the graphics for all those extra monsters but it's a shame they didn't take the time, as this would be the definitive version for sure if it had the bonus content.
@eduardo What is hilarious is that all they had to do is ask the player to set MP or Vancian when starting a new game. Not like the thing has massive file size.
it's literally THE thing that makes the ff1 gameplay distinctive, what I don't get is why they removed it in the first place...
@@SeraphJo cuz they'll release the dawn of souls as a dlc
@@murdocniccals3260 What I mean is, I don't understand why they removed it FOR the dawn of souls version in the first place. FF1 was designed around magic charges; MP greatly diminishes the choices and strategies you as a player make through dungeon crawling in FF1.
I'd love DLC updates though, although I find it unlikely. If they add new dungeons or systems via DLC I'd actually think it'd be sick...
i accidentaly came to your channel looking for info for ff4, saw that video and i cant stop watching your vids, thanx for the info about this ff too, see you on the next review
Wow, thank you so much, that's so nice of you to say! 😀
I was 8 years old when the Final Fantasy franchise was born. My mom was my age back then.
Time flies! Seems like yesterday, doesn't it? 😂

Really in depth review!
Thank you so much! 😀
you have a really comforting voice
Wow, thanks! That's nice to hear :)
I have been wanting to replay this for decades. I should pick this up!
I hope you enjoy! 😀
Thanks, good overview.
What an amazing game. I played the nes version when I was a kid and literally held the power and reset combo it said to EVER time I saved. Took forever. Just did a platinum trophy run on steam. If you haven't looked into the history of ff1 and the team that made it, I highly suggest that you do. Skies of Arcadia anyone...
Love This review, Thanks!
Thank you so much! 😍
My review of Final Fantasy 2 Pixel Remaster will be up tomorrow if you're interested!
Great video, took your suggestion and left a life and comment :)
Thank you for the support! 😍
Really useful video!!
Thank you so much! 😀
I think if the PSP version had the music from this port, then THAT would easily be the definitive version of Final Fantasy I
The new music is great for sure! 😀
Agree 1000%.
@@kNOwWHEREtoR1 not really.tje psp was port from ps1/psx with updated flashy graphics while all of these are remake from original nes with fun typos and mistranslation kept for us
If this is what came of FF1 I don't have high hopes for 4. The PSP version will probably always be the best version of 4
Point taken that a definitive edition shouldn't have typos. Makes sense. But I do believe the music in the PR is the best thing about it. Im sad that the character sprites didnt receive more love. The argument that they were staying true to the original doesnt make sense to me given that so much else has been improved. What I cant stand is the menu. All that said I still mostly enjoy playing it.
I didn't even know that we could dash!!! I'm near the end of FFII, but better late than never! Also, thanks for making a pretty complete overview of the improvements!
Haha, dash is a poorly advertised feature for sure! Thank you so much for your kind words! 😀
Do we have any idea how to dash on mobile devices? I have been play 1 and haven’t figured it out yet
Awesome review man! What's the song that plays at the end?
Thank you! 😀 It's called "Heaven and Hell (Part 2)" by Jeremy Blake.
nice content, earned a sub!
Thank you for the support! 😍
I picked up the bundle with all six games, I haven't played through most of the earlier ones and am having fun so far once i fixed the terrible font, and it also supports 3840x1600 ultrawide resolution.
Glad to hear you're enjoying it! Fixing the font definitely helps! 😀
Wow I never knew they remastered the 1st final fantasy on PC thanks for the vid
Glad I could help! 😀
Finished this for the first time yesterday was a blast, will admit i had to look things up a couple of times, mainly for the caravan because i thought it was a random encounter you had to find in the forest and didnt click that the small desert patch was an area and the final dungeon because the image in the sky dungeon looking down at the planet made me think the chaos shrine was meant to appear in the middle of the oceon lol.
Thanks for sharing! Glad you enjoyed the game :)
Nice video!
Thank you! 😀
I enjoyed this version a lot more than I thought I would. I feel like the mini-map was a real game changer since you only get a vague idea of where to go by talking to NPCs. For those who played the original can all agree that this version feels very smooth and overall less tiring than the OG (especially with menu-ing). The game felt somewhat easier than I remembered from the original. Short and sweet game (10 hours, 100% achievements), a good play on a rainy day.
There was an overworld map in the original NES version but not for interiors which i wish they had stuck with. The minimap reduces the challenge with interiors.
@@kNOwWHEREtoR1 . Then don't look at it. The more options a game has the better.
@@SeventhheavenDK Good point; the more options the better! Then give me an option to shut it off. I appreciate you supporting my point of view.
Final fantasy 1 is an excellent adventure. All the necessary information to progress the story is in the dialogue with NPCs. It makes you pay attention. Every town reveals something new. Coupled with the fun character progression system and the excitement of buying new magic spells this game becomes surprisingly difficult to put down.
That's a good point - all the information IS there in the game, you just have to look for it yourself! 😀
also surprisingly difficult to find a good battle....
This was the first non Mario game I played on the NES back in the day and I was the perfect age for this one at that time. Still one of the games I keep coming back to and my nostalgia for this one is purely endless...I love final fantasy 1
Thanks for sharing! I wish they’d released the game for the NES in Europe back in the day… I’m sure I would have loved it!
Wonder if the phone have controller support and can be played offline?
Just finished this with 100% achievements unlocked.
My only recommendation is you play the game with the Classic Filter (CRT) Turned On. IMO it makes the graphics look perfect.
It does indeed! Until I found the Classic Filter setting I was thinking of getting a refund.
i actualy thought the exact opposite, i DESPISED the Classic filter with my very being, and yes i did grew up with CRT monitors and gaming on CRT TVs etc... i just REALY dislike this filter
Great content , keep it up.
Thank you! :)
Anyone else more impressed at the fact you can move diagonally?
It's a game changer! 😂
I hated it actually
I enjoyed the game, but since I grew up with the original it seemed too easy in some ways. But, it blew my mind when I discovered you can move DIAGONAL!!!!
It's definitely easier in many ways. And yeah, diagonal movement is a gamechanger! 🤣
@@Altercate I was kind of disappointed since I've been trained to level grind by the original, I eneded up steamrolling enemies with ease after the marsh cave. I wish they would leave the old-school difficulty/shop items etc, but add in the auto target and quick battle features. I loved being able to automate my battles, saved soo many button presses!
One question regarding an issue that you had with the NES original. Does getting poisoned still make you groan?
LOL! No, they fixed that, you don't have to switch your marching order around after getting poisoned anymore... Single best change in the whole game 🤣
I have the pixel remaster on my PS4 a few days ago and wow the og of FF blow my mind how beautiful it is ❤️❤️
Your graphics look better than mine do on the iOS version. Mine are much more pixelated. I wonder if that’s a setting I can change
Weird... I've only tried the Steam version unfortunately so I can't compare!
Since the original game was based on 74s Dungeons & Dragons, there's a reason why characters attack air when an enemy dies. Turn based is a simulation, not a real-time battle. Each turn, all PCs and NPCs/Monsters attack, more or less at the same time. The order of attacks simulates initiative, a speed-based mechanic, with faster characters acting first. So, all players state their actions for this specific round, and two PCs attack the same foe, both striking at the same time, but one connects his attack before the other by mere fragments of second; when damage dealt is deducted from the foe's reservoir of hit points, he is dead after the first attack, so the second attack hits a dead body. It was not a flaw but a feature. A bad feature that made the game annoying but a feature nonetheless. I'm glad they changed it, just like 77's Basic D&D changed it.
And speaking of Dungeons & Dragons, it is incorrect that it contains spell points. In D&D, in all 11 versions*, the magic system is the same as Jack Vance's system: memorization. At level 1, you can memorize one spell per day, meaning once you cast that spell, you can't use it again until the next morning. Each level, you gain extra spells per day, and every few leves, you learn more advanced spells.
*Yes, there are 11 editions of the game. The 6 Advanced versions are actually 6 entirely different games with different rulesets and goals, but one of the few things that remains the same is Vancian Magic. These are the 11 versions:
OD&D
Basic
Basic/Expert
BECMI
Rules Cyclopedia
Advanced 1st edition (1e)
Advanced 2e
Advanced 3e
Advanced 3.5
Advanced 4e
Advanced 5e
Thanks for sharing! That's actually a really interesting point, I hadn't thought of it from that perspective before, even though I knew that the game was largely based on Dungeons & Dragons. Btw I made a video about that called "Everything Final Fantasy stole from D&D" 😂
This is like the only post ive seen that points out that this game was based on D&D and most dont know that. I miss the danger in the original game. Death was around every corner. This remaster has really watered things down I feel like.
@@kNOwWHEREtoR1 I honestly only like Final Fantasies 6 and 7; I played 1 to 9, I haven't played 10 to 15, nor I intend to do it. 6 and 7 are the good ones for me, for different reasons. 6 is the culmination of the classic style, it's similar to the first 5 games but with better mechanics and a good story. 7 is the first step beyond the classic style. Both 6 and 7 tell a mature, adult story; characters were not kids nor they were heroes in a simplistic adventure.
@@vagabundorkchaosmagick-use2898 6 (3 US) is my absolute fave with 4 (2 US) close second as far as stories go. I think I got those numbers right. But 1 is and will always be my baby. Stopped playing at number 8. Got annoyed with in game games. Tried to get back in after 9 but couldnt. Just wasnt the same for me anymore.
loved this one, very happy with what they made.
It's game balance changes are interesting. While it sounds a lot more streamlined with items from later games and auto-target system. On the other hand, they brought back the original d&d spell slot system that they took out of remakes like Dawn of Souls.
I'd probably recommend it to my younger brother, for accessibility purposes
Yup, if nothing else, it's great to have a version of FF1 for PC finally 😀
I am enjoying the remaster, but being someone who has already beaten it on ios like 3 years back, would have loved to experience the added content from the gameboy Era. But since they never redid the gba version, mist have been too much effort for them to do it from scratch
Yeah, it's a shame that stuff didn't make it into this version! 😣
the good thing about the 1st batch pixel remaster release is the final fantasy 3. for the 2nd batch we have to see for ourselves but i think all 3 will be good, especially 5 and 6.
Can't wait to try the second batch out! 😀
Yeah, the Pixel Remaster version of 3 is honestly my favorite version of the game.
Yep, Attack, Attack, Healing Staff, Gauntlets, Repeat. Once I could do this, I had most of the game on lock down. Don’t try that strategy on Chaos, tho !
solid entry that scratches my nostalgia itch. a couple of gripes though, random encounter rate is probably too high, it gets the party high enough that most of the time you steamroll all random monsters some dungeonmonstersgave me trouble in the nes version when i was a kid and it'skind of anticlimactic when they die in 1 round now. a save point in dungeons would be nice since it's a mobile game that most people need to put down off and on. poison status ailment is a bit overused. the boss battles are great with some actual difficulty and strategy involved but you are typically overleveled when facing them due to all the random encounters.
I liked it when Garland said he was here to kill chaos
What people don't get is, it's not a hope or a dream, it's like a hunger, a thirst.
does this game support controller? In theory, if I purchase the iOS version, use Apple TV to cast on my tv, and a Bluetooth ps4 controller, I should have the “authentic” console experience? Thank you
I've been playing the game with my PS4 controller! (Plugged in through USB cable since I'm sitting next to my computer, but I assume it would work fine through Bluetooth as well!) Edit: *My bad, I meant the Steam version supports controllers, the iOS version doesn't!*
@@Altercate I actually just purchase this on iOS App Store last night, only to discover that it doesn’t support controller. I really don’t like touch control so I returned the game😞
@@jackieliu1232 Oh crap, sorry, I misread your comment, I thought you were asking about the Steam version! My bad :(
Only dissapointments i have are the removal of using tents and stuff to save in the wild and the extra dungeons from DoS
I'd like to know if any of the Final Fantasy Pixel remaster series can play its original music on its respective game.
Nope! No such option in any of the games.
Great review. I reached the same conclusion as you did. If you haven't played the originals or other ports, this a good way to go and I know it pleases a lot of people that it's on Steam to play on PC. However, I'm cynical in a different way. I actually preferred the PSP remake because it looks more updated. I'm old enough to appreciate the retro graphics (I played the original on NES and owned the original cartridge), and honestly, there's nothing significant this version does that you can't do via emulation. Therefore, paying more than $10 for an old game on a modern console isn't worth it for me. However, if you're of a younger generation and haven't played the originals, this is good way to go, albeit overpriced in my opinion.
I'm kinda torn myself. On some levels, I definitely prefer the PSP version for the updated graphics, and the item dupe glitch that makes speedrunning the game a lot of fun. On the other hand, any version of FF1 with an MP system feels too easy for me, because the game was serious balanced around the old school D&D spell points, so the gameplay balance of this version feels better.
@@RagnarokB It's all in your head. Spell charges versus MP change very little, due to how much the spells cost and how little max MP you gain per level. Say in NES FF1, you have 4 Level 1 spell charges at Lv 3, but in the MP based games, it's around 23 or so max MP, but the level 1 spells all cost 5 MP, so you can still only use them 4 times. Not to mention, all it really makes you do in the long run is never cast spells until bosses, or healing out of battle, thereby rendering the mages less effective attacking units until such times. This made them easily replaceable with another class, like another Warrior or Monk, or a Red Mage for the improved physical hits.
@@tamerkoh . I have to agree with this for completely.
The psp it 100% better. The soundtrack alone has better ambient sounds in the background like for example on the water temple u hear waves or the chaos shrine u hear like eerie sounds...on this pixel remaster u don't and it's disappointing. On top that the psp and gba looks still better than this new one.
Crap they don't have the optional dungeon? What a let down! Its a good game in general though. I must have purchased this same game at least six different times. Each on different platforms. NES, Playstation, PSP, GBA, Android and even a Java version on an old flip phone.
We can only hope if this got green light for Xbox or Nintendo.
Does it fix the level-up bug from the other iOS port?
As far as I can tell, although I never played the iOS port so I'm not 100% sure.
Does it have the additional dungeons added like in gba? Or anything additional end game?
Unfortunately not! Content-wise, it's the same game as the original NES version, which is a shame.
@@Altercate thanks for quick response. ill give ffiii and ffii a try. i love ffi but id rather not, im burnt out on it.
Thank you for the video, glad to see the remaster is well done. Also the music sounds wonderful remastered, I can't wait for FF4-6.
Me too! Can't wait to hear those games rearranged - especially looking forward to the Final Fantasy Main Theme (Prologue) from FF4 when Cecil crosses the bridge. I've got chills just thinking about it! 😀
Chaos ain't going to kill itself!
CHAOS!! 😡
Can you still get Excalibur in this version?
Sure! Everything from the original game is still there :)
Why the hell would they not put in previously included content?
Moving diagonally is cheating! 😆🤣
An unfair advantage for modern audiences! 😀
I like the remaster but I was bummed to see they cut out the peninsula of power
Yeah i tried to go there and only succeeded in wolf genocide.
Your review had a lot going for it in only 7 minutes. I'm impressed. FF1 has always been the easiest game in the series to pick up and replay as I constantly think about how I would go through the game with a different party setup.
That said, I smiled with glee that I saw the promoted Warriors of Light all grown up like in the NES original. The biggest charm with the older Final Fantasy games is that since the main protagonists get no character development story-wise, there is a greater emphasis on their growth as adventurers and warriors (investing time grinding for experience and job levels helps with this, too). Seeing the characters "grow up" when they get promoted is IMO the best part of the first game.
You make a great point! That's a cool perspective 😀
Actually, I like this Black Wizard sprite (which is similar to the original) than the later ones.
Ae you going to do a review for FF3?
Yes! I'm working on it right now 😀
Good stuff 🙂
Thank you! 😀
I wish i could have this with all the new fixes, but the old NES sprites. Something about most of the FF1 ports' sprites feel unnatural or out-of-place, while the old spites feel more blended.
this version is a lot more accessible than the original and even the one from the origins collection on PS1. I admit though I do wish they made the option to also play the original NES version on it. I didnt appreciate my copy of that when I had it as a child and would love a chance to try my original party in that game again now that I know how to actually play and enjoy the game. Hopefully sometime it will be available on switch in that format too.
I can't wait for this on PS4!
Is it confirmed? And if so what about FF2-6?
I will buy it for my Switch, eventually.
Nice!
Thank you so much! 😀
Alrighty...
You start by going to the Chaos Shrine to find Garland. You beat Garland to get Princess Sarah to give you the Lute and to get a bridge built to get to the rest of the continent. You take the bridge to get to Pravoka and find the pirate Bikke. You beat Bikke to get a ship. You take the ship to Elfheim and walk across the continent to the west to find the Marsh Cave. You get the Crown from the Marsh Cave and take it to the Western Keep to fight Astos. You beat Astos to get the Crystal Eye. You take the Crystal Eye to Matoya to get the Jolt Tonic. You take the Jolt Tonic to the Prince of Elfheim to get the Magic Key. You take the Magic Key to unlock a door in Corneria Castle to get the Nitro Powder. You take the Nitro Powder to the dwarves at Mt. Duergar to open a canal into the world ocean. You sail through the canal to get to Melmond. You go past Melmond to the Terra Cavern and go as far as you can to beat a Vampire and get a Star Ruby. You take the Star Ruby to the Titan in the Titan's Cave so you can pass and get an Earth Rod from the sage. You take the Earth Rod back to the Terra Cavern to get all the way to the end to beat Lich and relight the Earth Crystal. Then you sail to Crescent Lake and talk to the sages to get a canoe. You take the canoe to Mt. Gulg to beat Maralith and relight the Fire Crystal. Then you take the canoe to the Ice Cavern to find a Levistone. You take the Levistone to a desert to the south to get an airship. (If you like, you can fly the airship to the "left wing" of the northeast continent, land on a tiny patch of grass, and walk to the Citadel of Trials. You go through the Citadel to get a Rat's Tail. You take the Rat's Tail to Bahamut in the Cardian Isles to get a class change.) You take the airship to the Desert Caravan to buy a Bottled Faerie. You take the Bottled Faerie to Gaia to get Oxyale. You take the Oxyale to the submarine in Onrac to get to the Sunken Shrine. You go to the top of the shrine to get a Rosetta Stone and to the bottom of the shrine to fight the Kraken and relight the Water Crystal. You take the Rosetta Stone to Dr. Unne to learn to speak Lufenian. You go to Lufenia and talk to the people there to get a Mirage Bell. Then you take the canoe to a cave in the waterfall north of Onrac to get a Warp Cube from the robot. You take the bell and the cube to the Mirage Tower to get to the Flying Fortress. You go through the Flying Fortress to get Adamantite (if you want to) and to beat Tiamat and relight the Wind Crystal. (If you want) You take the Adamantite to the dwarves in Mt. Duergar to get the Excalibur. Then you go back to the Chaos Shrine and step through the center tile to get to the Temple of Chaos. You walk through until you get to a stone and use the Lute to reveal the last part of the dungeon. Finally, you walk through to the end, defeat the Lich, Maralith, the Kraken, and Tiamat a second time, and finally Chaos.
Got it? Then do all that and you've mastered Final Fantasy.
With comments like this, who needs GameFAQs? :D
@@Altercate I just like the fact that these early JRPGs had walkthroughs that could fit on a single page. :)
Is it true they got rid of the Power Peninsula and the Hall of Giants?
Yep!
My biggest question is:
How do they handle the Monks?
Sorry, I never pick monk so I'm not sure 😂
Thanks for the review. Has anyone try the android version?
The one thing I don't like about these remasters, (I can forgive the extra dungeons) is going back to spell charges. I know why they did it, but I have never liked it even when I played it on the NES as a kid. Spell charges was the reason why I went with 3 Fighters and a Red Mage as a kid.
Spell charges in FF1 are far too limited, which takes the fun out of playing a mage imo. They stuck too close to the D&D numbers (max 9 slots for each spell level), which doesn't work in a game based on fighting dozens of random encounters between each rest. In FF3 the spell charges are much more generous and I never really had any issue with it! 😀
Thats the party i used too as a kid. The spell charge system is the reason why white and especially black mage suck balls in the nes/ps1 versions.
Good video, thanks!
I'm thinking of picking this up on Steam when it goes on sale. 50%+ off would be ideal, IMO.
I really appreciate all the QoL improvements Squeenix seems to have added here. I've also never played the original Final Fantasy. My first one was IV on the SNES back in the day.
Glad I could help! Hope you enjoy the game if you do pick it up :)
PSP remastered was favorite for final fantasy one😁😁
Very good game! 😀
Does the MC (the Warrior of Light) have a "canon" name? Or a name that everyone calls him by?
No, there's nothing like that. The game simply refers to them as Warriors of Light / Light Warriors, and none of them are addressed directly or called by name.
@@Altercate not even in the fanbase?
@@paperluigi6132 Not that I've ever seen! Usually people just say Warrior of Light or WoL. There's also some overlap with the default (shown in trailers) hero from Final Fantasy XIV, who is also known as the Warrior of Light! Actually, FF1 is the only mainline entry in the series that never got canon names for its characters. FF3 didn't have named characters originally but got official names for the 3D remake! 😀
@@Altercate ok, cool. Thanks for sharing.
But FFXIV is understandable since it's an MMO.
I'd hesitate to call it canon, but there is a novelization of FF1 with the Warriors of Light being named.
The Fighter's name is given as Zest (ゼスト, Zesuto?). He leads the Warriors of Light and bears the Fire Crystal. He has short red hair and is righteous and courageous in nature. Honest, straightforward and prone to tunnel vision, unlike the other three, he has no memories of his past.
The Thief's name is given as Sauber (ザウバー, Zaubā?). He has long golden hair, holds the Wind Crystal and tends to keep the rest of the party grounded in reality with his realist attitude. Apparently a cynical worrier, in battles he tends to be a bit gung-ho and gets in a lot of conflict with Zest.
The Black Mage's name is given as Daewoo (テウ, Teu?). He carries the Earth Crystal and is a silent type whose every word counts. He is a kindhearted and quiet man, who also seems to be highly intelligent and in tune with beasts and other aspects of nature.
The White Mage's name is given as Floe (フロウ, Furō?). The only female in the group of four, has a shard of the Water Crystal. She is a kind, gentle and motherly youth but scary and ferocious when angered.
In the original game, they were all mostly assumed male, with perhaps the White Mage being androgynous enough to be female. Now, what about the Monk and Red Mage you say? They too were given names
The Black Belt's name is given as Fritz (フリッツ, Furittsu?). An original character that does not appear in the game, he is young and has a Dark Crystal.
The Red Mage's name is given as Puffy (パフィ, Pafi?). An original character who does not appear in the game, she is the main protagonist and meets DB-6 in the back of the cave of Onrac near waterfall. She is a member of the Warriors of Light (together with Fritz, Sarah and Matoya) and helps to restore the power of the Crystals.
(this was copy-pasted from a Reddit page so I'm not really knowledgeable on this myself, as I haven't read it.)
The cut content hurts. But I agree that it's the definitive version. Especially when you see the first six games being streamlined in art and quality of life.
Yes! After playing these first three, the streamlining is something I'm really excited about. The new engine is extremely pleasant to use both in combat and in the menus.
I only played the gba version before getting this. Honestly easier for me to play this version because of my vision impairment. I used to have better eyesight when I played it years ago. I've also had a bunch of game boy cartridges lose their ability to retain save files. I can't remember the audio quality
of the gba speakers, I can imagine they were that good. So overall I'm pleased.
Thanks for sharing! The GBA version would've been my top recommendation before the Pixel Remaster, just because I prefer the pixel graphics to the more cartoony PSP style. It's too bad the bonus dungeons from the GBA version didn't make it into the Pixel Remaster, but there's plenty to like about it IMO! 😀
When I saw they used pixels instead of Octopath graphics I was skeptical, but when I heard the music I instantly fell in love with it. I literally sat there for like 15 mins just listening to the in game menu screen music. Then, when I heard Astos' castle music all I could do was giggle and shit myself. The spell animations are really cool too. I wasn't gonna buy any other ones since I have psp and steam versions, but now I can't wait till 4-6 comes out. I'm probably just gonna fall over and cry.
Dude, I'm bracing myself! The feels are gonna hit HARD 🤣
I'm really enjoying this one. It's got a true feel of exploration, and a real sense of satisfaction from successful grinds.
There's something incredibly soothing in simply grinding out levels in a classic JRPG 😀
So wasting time, hmm
@@Altercate and spooky too. 👻
There is something about FF1 being the first game in medieval but in such a empty place travel around while getting enemies magically appear when they catch you to fight and the music too like underwater temple or the empty earie sky city with no lore value with the forgotten mechs.
@@Walamonga1313 for some it may feel like that, but for me, building I'm my characters is one of the best parts of any RPG including tabletop RPGs.
Que bien, sale el juego en castellano. Esperando que salga en versión de
PS4 o PS5. Sobre todo si sale en formato físico, compra asegurada.
A PS4 or PS5 version would be great! 😀
ient this version still lacking the extra features from the Dawn of Souls port on the GBA
Yep, all of the bonus features are gone from this version.
Cool!
Why the white mage is fliping the bird in the thumbnail?
LOL! Once you see, you cannot unsee! 🤣
I just beat this today and I had a really great time playing it 😊 I never played 1 and 3 so it was also nice getting a blind experience! The remade music was amazing
Thanks for sharing, glad you had a good time with the game! 😀 Are you going to play the other ones too?
@@Altercate I definitely will , I'm most excited for 4,5 and 6 since I've been wanting to replay those for a long time~
Be nice if they released the cut content as DLC
That would be really cool. I'd love to see even further DLC as well if they cared to make it...
I'm still a sucker for the NES game. New games don't do it for me. These games are art. It's like you're talking about a new 2021 version of the Mona Lisa.
LOL good analogy! There's a true beauty to the original for sure! 😀
Absolutely. This is like colorizing Citizen Kane and changing the aspect ratio and framerate for modern people's attention spans. Just don't.
What I want is the original game ROMs in a full set. No bug fixes for things unless they are obvious bugs (i.e., fix the stair glitch, but don't change attacking air if you killed your target -- that is your intended punishment for poor planning!). No other changes whatsoever.
Making games "easier" for accessibility is disgusting to me. If anything, they should be made harder because the gameplay is better understood.
You need to keep the bar at the same level so everyone who beats a game joins the same club.
Bought. Gotta play the game that kicked it all off.
I LOVE the FACT you said GOLD and not Gil... I have always hated that they called it Gil.
Also... I wish there was a difficulty setting now that they have made the game a bit easier. Seems that I am just breezing through the game at this point.
Haha, I always feel like "Gil" is just gonna confuse people who might have never played the series before 😂
Party’s always Red mage , white mate, red mage , black mage or sometimes 2 black mages 🧙♂️ red is the tank
Magic heavy! 😮 Don't you feel like the red mage is a bit squishy given the gear limitations compared to the fighter?
Altercate as kids my friends thought you couldn’t beat the game without a warrior it is entirely possibly when you use the spell to raise melee damage on nes the spell stacks so he gets stronger if you cast it on him a few times, try it sometime it’s fun and very op at the end
@@janmichaelyourvincents2754 That's awesome, I'll give that a try sometime 😂
As soon as I heard characters will auto target and you can just spam attack I lost hope or interest
Hopefully 4,5, and 6 are being released sooner rather than later. Those will be the true meat and potatoes of this collection
Looking forward to that for sure! Though I selfishly hope that they won't drop the games before I get back from vacation 😂
Just finished playing through this game, via Dawn of Souls (GBA). I do wish the PSP version had been ported to Steam, but eh, GBA's good enough.
Also, Dawn of Souls tosses out that stupid limited-magic system in favour of the now-normal MP system, which is awesome.
Im glad someone thinks that the old magic system is bad. Thats why every RPG, included newer FF and the good remakes of this game uses the MP system.
I personally prefer the GBA version for the additional content and the modern MP system.
Also the graphics look neat and remind me of the good old GBA times when i played both this and FF6.
I just hope Square doesn't mind me playing that on emulator since my original hardware broke long ago. But i guess they aren't Nintendo. 😅
Also, just for the record, i bought the Steam and Android version anyway so kindly just look the other way, please.
Thanks for the review. I loved this version
I've been playing ff1 for over 30 years. Great review! Definitely going to do this one again!
Thank you! Hope you enjoy your playthrough 😀
Is it just me or was the game REALLY easy, and then the final boss comes over and it was extremely difficult? Don’t know if that was just me
Ain't nobody gonna realize the guy in the white robe in the thumbnail looks like he's holding the middle finger?
lol
Not a big deal I guess but that font choice is horrible for a pixel remake. They could have made the font look like the original games instead of some basic arial
So is the difficulty identical to the PSP version?
As far as I can tell, yes. I haven't been able to spot any differences in terms of difficulty.
@@Altercate Thanks for the information. Then this game is nothing for me, because its too easy. I simply don't understand the point of giving the player so many choices regarding party creation if at the end of the day it almost does not matter what you choose you always win. Only the last boss was an exception. I had a similar problem with FF XV and KH III.
@@m.v.2097 I respect that! That's similar to how I feel about Baldur's Gate (which I love) vs Pillars of Eternity (which I never got into). FF Pixel Remaster is definitely not for those who are looking for a challenge, but rather a game for those who want to experience the original game (without its original difficulty) and just chill and grind some levels. 😀
i wouldnt say identical, since it has some minor differences. Is much easier than PSP since you have map in dungeons and auto battle, (that itself, was a reduction of difficult of GBA, that itself, was a reduction of difficult of PS1, that itself, was a reduction of difficult of Java, that itself, was a reduction of difficult of Wonderswan, that itself.... well, you get the point).
I prefer having free party choices so everyone feels all around that something like FFV where you can break the game completely with the right choices.
Desperate for this to get controller support on iOS/iPadOS
