    I have a 1978 D150 that I bought last October...I drove it from a neighboring state and it died when I got home. Fathers Day i got it running again and have been driving it every since, but I replaced everything on the top end minus heads, an aluminum radiator and all the elected leaders electrical ignition parts.
    I intend to do the suspension, I have headers for it, but over the winter I want to tear the motor apart and install the goodies with the stock bottom end just freshened up.
    This is a job I'm tackling this week after installing motor mounts and still need to install the transmission mount which up do after this is done!
    Great videos and information!

    If you’re willing to use the silicone pan gasket, felpro typically includes the plastic pins that will not only align the pan but hold it in place so you can install all other bolts. Super convenient and easier than having to make your own. Great video friend. Keep em coming!

    This is a great video. I have a 96 Dodge Ram (2nd gen) with the 360 (5.9) that also has a leak from the rear main seal.
    There are a couple of small differences that I know about but this is a fantastic walk threw on how to do this job. I am also, like you, replacing the oil pump while I am in there. I have a few more miles (175k) and figure it is just wise while I am in there.
    Just Thank you for a great video!

    I'm in the middle of doing the timing on my truck(the exact color as yours too) and wanted to replace the oil pan gasket. Couldn't get the pan out because I didn't lift the motor! Also my rear seal is pretty much plastic at this point and isn't letting go 😭 hopefully lifting the motor helps! Thanks for all the information! I do like that you leave mistakes in so people know what not to do, it's helpful to know, like the ball joint video!!

  • @liambeckemeyer2499

    So I recently did this on my 78 D150...I found that on the 318 you don't have to raise the engine at all to get the oil pan out. I'm not sure if it's simply a difference in engine size or a difference between the 70s and 80s. Either way it made it a lot easier for me.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  2 роки тому +2

      That’s awesome. Yeah the manual said some do some don’t. Mine definitely did. Even with raising it things were pretty tight.

    Good job. With that many miles, I might've replaced all of the rod bearings while it was open.
    But also, I might've had the cylinder heads off too, then pushed all of the piston/rods out, used a deglazing hone on the cylinders, then replaced all of the piston rings.....I might have to do that while the heads are off right now....my 318's #4 cylinder was lower compression than the rest, and a wet test shot it waaaay up! 😆

    I put a new Radiator and electric fan on my 89 D250 and after I was done and fired it up a growing pool of oil was under it as I looked for Radiator leaks. I heard it could be done without engine removal but got stuck at getting it out. Did some looking and saw where the engine mounts could be loosened so when I get back at it I'll hopefully get it wrapped up. Glad you replaced the pump as they're cheap and good insurance. In case anybody is curious never use a highflo pump as it will starve the crank.

    Recently had my 3.9l out of my dakota (same design, its a 318 with 2 cylinders cut off) one tip is to put rtv in the area where the timing cover, oil pan, and block come together. Mine started leaking there. Its not bad but I only notice it because the engine is orange 🤦‍♂️

    Use a one piece silicone rubber gasket for a Magnum. Buy a piece of cheap thread all and cut it up into at least a half dozen studs. Buy a 42 dollar 1994 magnum pan from Rock Auto use a magnum pickup. Goop the mating surfaces liberally with RTV on the ends and sparingly on the sides. I have been using those old LA cork and rubber 4 piece sets since 1970 and never again . I did this yesterday Free ,I say Free at last

    GLAD FOR YOUR CLARITY AND SHARING YOUR EFFORT. AS I HAVE 90 D250 5.9 TBI, AM WONDERING IF YOU ADDED A THIN COAT OF GASKET
    RTV TO THE RUBBER PAN SEALS, BEFORE PLACING THEM ONTO THE OIL PAN, AND THEN PLACING THE BLACK RTV BEADS AT THE CORNERS? AM UNSURE IF LACKING THAT, IT IS ONLY THE RUBBER GASKET COMPRESSION, AND THE CORNER BEADS, ARE WHAT IS CALLED FOR. TY. AM SUBSCRIBING.

      @bretcoffee2447 5 днів тому

      BTW, MY SERVICE MANUAL FOR 90 D250, DOES NOT REQUIRE THE MOTOR MOUNT UNBOLTING, AND ENGINE LIFTING, TO REMOVE THE OIL PAN. IT IS A LONG BED MODEL, IS YOURS SHORT OR REGULAR BED? THE SM SAYS REMOVE EXHAUST CROSSOVER PIPE, AND LEFT TRANSMISSION STRUT, THEN UNBOLT OIL PAN. SO PERHAPS THE ACCESS IS EASIER ON THE LONGER WHEELBASE.

      Good luck! 🫡 It took us 2.5 work days but that was filming the entire process as well… which slows everything way down.

    Did you only prime the pump while off the engine? I've seen folks priming via pump drive and not sure what's the difference

    Can you tell me what manual/book you used to guide your changing the rear main seal?

    Anyone know if this method works on a 4x4 2nd gen 2500 with the 5.9 magnum?

    Hey jason my guy can you do me a huge solid an measure your dipstick tube length and the stick itself? Ive got a new tube i just put in and the new stick aint long enough so im going to use the old stick and im going to put new marks on it so the add and full lines would be amazing too.

      You asked nicely so here you go! Now take this with a grain of salt. The tube was pretty hard to measure. Lots of stuff in the way. The exterior part of the dipstick tube I could measure was roughly 14" and the dipstick itself was 33 1/4" (The part going down the tube). I'd google this stuff to confirm.

      @@JasonExplainsThings Thank you the information available to me on the interwebs was incredibly conflicting but i have been without a dipstick for a few years now and had a bolt in the hole and now i just pulled the broken tube out and am trying to figure out the proper tube and stick length. Also ive got a new clutch fly wheel and pan seal sitting next to me gonna have some fun when the weather decides to behave on the weekend you videos help alot.

    What would be symptoms that you need to replace that? Mine leaks coolant right there in that area. Is there supposed to be coolant there?

      It would be oil not coolant if there’s a rear main seal leak.

      It has the original carb. I'm daydreaming about adding EFI from Edelbrock or Holly.
