A friend and I visited this bothy 30 - 31 March 2015. The weather was worse than we expected. Driving snow as we approached the bothy. Luckily, 2 other users had arrived just before we did, and had got the stove going. A pleasant evening chatting and relaxing by the fire with 2 new friends. This bothy has been much improved since I last visited in 2014. In particular, the bedroom has been insulated, and lined with wood. Weather rather better in the morning, so we walked back to Moffat.
The guidebook clearly states where they are. I found that each one has it's own character, and making use of them enhanced my enjoyment of the treck. Having done the whole of the SUW in 2013, I have returned to sample sections of it at different times of the year. Looking forward to a couple of days on the SUW at the end of this month (March 2015).
The whole point of a bothy is that travellers can seek shelter and safety. If you keep them secret and just let your clique in on it you don't deserve them. as in life there's always some dicks that ruin things for the sensible majority. take your litter home, bury your shite and all is dandy.
sadly the Minch moor bothy has been demolished. It was built by the Airborne Initiative several years ago but was used and abused far too often by numpties on the piss.....
LukeyHear - I'm more than happy to publicise bothies on the internet. Why? Because the Mountain Bothies Association does. On their own website you'll find a list of bothies, complete with grid references. The old idea that you shouldn't talk about bothies except in hushed tones has been abandoned.
A reminder to any potential people commenting on how I shouldn't say where bothies are: the Mountain Bothies Association lists grid references for everyone of their bothies on their website.
So basically Southern Upland Way walkers should be deprived of actually knowing where they can stay, just because some idiots can't use a bothy properly? I'm not saying it's not a problem - it is. But bothies are far more useful if people actually know where they are. And I'm pretty sure the idiots would still find out where bothies were even if they were still secret.
I dont agree.I've just returned from a fishing trip in the north of scotland, and the biggest problem with this weeked was finding alot of my favourite spots to fish ,coverd in Rubbish that people have left at there ARSE. this is because too many people know these sweet spots.ONLY tell fishermen, hill walkers, bothie go'ers ect.Or all our favourite places will be ruined by arseholes that think rivers and lochs are for swimming in ! Do you want the these places looking like your local park ?
These all look like good spots to escape to with me crew for a wicked weekend of drinking and smokin' and if we're rowdy enough we should have them all to ourselves. On top of that, it looks like someone is paid to keep them clean and tidy so we can leave all our shit behind for someone else to clean up - Can't wait for the Spring Bank Holiday.
@@os-walker I ask not to publicise them more. Since I posted this comment at least two have closed due to overuse, the bothy bible being explicitly implicated in this. We can do a little to help this situation by not publicising them even more. I am well aware they are published. Is my view.
Tip for starting a fire - drip wax from a candle on fine twigs/tinder, which will then act like a wick when set alight !

I reckon that beehive bothy must be nearly 30 years old.

Please don't publicise bothies on the Internet.
They are already on the internet.. and now published in books the location of every bothy.
