I think the mental health aspects of periods should also be discussed. There is still an entire world of people who think that PMS is imaginary and that hormone levels don't affect your mental state or cognition.

Is the fish market and the crime scene display the myth and the multimedia stream the only progress to be made? Or is this a scenario where the hero chooses the right path and avoids all siren calls? Not to mention the people who have to put up with your PMS also suffer mental health issues YOU caused by releasing YOUR PMS upon them.

@@robertdenham9541 seems like you might be having a deeper concern that reflects issues of your own. You can't control another person, only how you react to them and if this is how you react to someone who "inflicted their PMS" on you, you might want to get that in check. I am sorry that someone made you feel this way. Contrary to common belief, women don't feel proud or at all happy to "inflict" their PMS on others. Generally most people lack the wisdom to see from context.

At my school all the teachers and guys think it’s taboo and gross, but all the girls will walk up to a group of kids and ask for a tampon no big deal.
In my school if we want to talk about it, we do, 'cause it isn't wrong to talk about it

For those of you saying "but we can talk about periods" are disregarding that in many cultures it's taboo and there are still a lot of people, especially older generations and some men, who are extremely uncomfortable discussing it. She mentioned things I've never heard of before.
we can't and we don't seriously talk about periods, if women are not allowed to skip school or work at least one day a month. i have struggled for my whole life to convince my bosses that i simply can't come to work that day and they didn't want to hear about it. even an unpaid day off / month was very hard to get.
So why talk it on youtube? Why not go and them?
Yeah I remember learning about a village in Africa who separates the women on their period who makes them stay in one room for the entire time they had it. I wish people were more familiar and comfortable with it.

She didn't mention it but studies show that giving birth (normal delivery) is 2nd most painful thing in the world, 1st being burnt alive. Imagine the pain a mother takes to give birth to her child. Made me think twice before I hurt my mom in anyway.

Most of my male friends have no idea of the significance of menstruation pains.
For some women, periods cause crippling pains. I was oblivious of this until I was 21 (when I started dating my now wife). It's astonishing how under-discussed menstruation is - in pretty much every society in the world.
Cause it's taboo and it shouldn't be our society just needs to grow up cause this is normal for girls and there's nothing to be ashamed of. When the boys learn about it they'll understand how to help their female friend, girlfriend, fiance or wife when the period occurs.

I’m not sure if this is just my school or country, but periods were explained very well in class and I didn’t know myths like it being toxic even existed.
yeah same for me, it was way before i got my period too, so when i did, it was all very clear whats happening....
in my school period was barely mentioned. here there is even myths like "you cannot wash you hair when you're in your period" and such things like that lmao
I am a 55 year old woman who has openly talked about periods since I was a teen. I've never called it by any name other than menstruation or period. I know that my being open, especially around friends, it has helped them to do the same.
We sure don't have to talk about it 24/7 but when it naturally comes up, let's be honest and let's call it by its name.
yeah i feel you, whenever i just casually mention my period to a friend they instantly feel like they unlocked a new achievement that im comfortable with them, so they also feel closer to me😁
Thank you so much for this video. I suffered from pain for years be google helped me managed the pain. Not the many doctors I have seen about my problems, but the wealth of information I have found over the internet that isn't afraid to talk about it.

@@aparnaga1182 They do have experience. The women they're sleeping with, living with, or raising will have periods once a month for a week. They will be around a woman who is suffering from cramps. They should be able to pick up tampons and not be embarrassed, which many men I know are. They should at least have a curiosity about it, and want to discuss it. Anyways, thanks for coming to my TED talk.
I seen someone saying that we should normalise periods in society and one of the reply’s were like “we don’t talk about our poo or pee so why should we talk about periods”............when I think of normalise it isn’t running down the street screaming that I’m on my period. its going to the toilet and opening a pad without being scared someone will hear me...it’s when I should be able have a zipper on my body instead of my waist for fear of leaking.....it’s being able to tell someone that you need a paracetamol or heating pad for your period cramps without feeling shame...........that’s what normalising periods mean to me🤷🏻♀️💙

Given research funding and that even my university refused to stock Female mise (I was short a project and though about the rat-addiction vs health (social) live experiment since the original didn't even specify they used only male animals) (in budget and pre approved by the ethics council)... it'll take more than being a motivated bachelor of education.

i'm from india, and back in the days, when women got their periods, they weren't allowed to go even near temples or religious places, let alone inside them. also, they weren't allowed to take a bath, they weren't allowed to sleep in the same room as the rest of their family (even their husband, if they had one, though they most probably did) and they were considered impure. luckily the condition about this is improving but there are still many rural areas where these taboos are believed in.
I only ever had cramps that pained me out of sleep when I used any other pads than Poise. I wonder if the way some companies make their pads influence the amount of pain women face during their period. What would be the specific factor in pads that causes dire period cramps ?

Idky but I have secondary amenorrhea and love talking about periods, but whenever I'm talking about or reading about periods, I start getting cramps.
Also, does anyone else have secondary amenorrhea? I've never met someone in person who has it and very little people online.

We are very lucky to have families that are open minded. There are many people in the world who are still don't talk openly about periods. Families don't tell their kids that it nothing to be ashamed of to talk about a biological process. So the girls never talk about their period problems. After getting married when they conceived many of them faced complications in their pregnancy. Some couldn't even conceive and many miscarriages happened. Just because parents thought it should not to be talked about.
I myself had PCOD problem, if my parents had not addressed it, If they didn't speak openly with me about it, maybe after grew I wouldn't be able to consieve a baby. To this day that idea scares me. But thanks to my families support I told them my problem and today I'm PCOD free. In the old days such cases were very rare, because their life style was healthier than ours. But now when 1/10 women or girls are facing this problem we should speak about it, only then they will reach us to get help. Thank you so much for this video!

Some people don't like talking about personal things. Some people don't like thinking about blood. Some people don't like talking about other people's privates. Some people don't like talking about their own privates. The only people I see in life trying to force period conversations do it in inappropriate places like work or over a meal. A lot of the women I see in real life who try to force these things to be normal also can't bear to discuss other things themselves, and there are far more important things to talk about too.
There are plenty of reasons to discuss periods. No one is saying we CAN'T though.
I see your points. Although it is possible there are some people who can't talk about the topic of menstration based on the people in their lives. Maybe you haven't come across this, a blessing for you to be accepted in full!!!! 🤗😍🤗

I've literally had conversations where women start with "everyone should be able to talk about periods, why are you uncomfortable" and end with "why are we talking about circumcision, that makes me uncomfortable."

We can, few countries have national numbers as high as the US (and Israel has a slightly lower mutation rate beyond the intended).
I listen to every man complaining about the state of their foreskin... hasn't yet made them vote to stock(all ready budgeted for) period supplys in girl's bathrooms to avoid sending 14 years old's to the opposite end of school when the flow is extra heavy, missing more classes.
We should support each other and end bronze age stigma.

@@Richard_Nickerson kids need access, it's definitely something worth contributing to their lives and it's a "Förderverein" (donation association) paying for it, not taxes... nothing would be lost but a few square centimetres space (alias we have to vote on it).
PS the extra cleaning cost of blood splattered toilet seat/cabins (as occasionally happens when without proper technique or supplys) is out of the tax based budget and could sink.

Edit: The toilets aren't cleaned based on appearance. Every toilet is already cleaned anyway, so some surprise period blood makes no difference.

As a male citizens from germany i am very confused about period shaming and i can certainty say most of the people in europe are confused as well about this topic.
Because we learn in school, about the ago of eleven, that period is a natural and complex system in the female body.
So, to shame a woman or girl about period shaming is kinda a sign for stupidity. Like Ms. Gunter says about nosebleeding.
Also i start wondering how worse are the social problem in the USA when period shameing is a thing? Maybe we need a TED talk about that.
In the end, great talk! I enjoy it! Beside the blaming over the patriarchal society, at 2:17, because that dosent exist in europe or at least in germany - but maybe in the US?
Don't take it personally. Patriarchal society doesn't mean you. It means that systematically pretty much worldwide menstruation is treated as a dirty thing we don't address. For example in India it is still hard for women to have access to menstruation products, they are put out of the house so they don't bleed everywhere, that would be like, not having access to toilet paper, can you imagine.
As a woman living in Germany, I can assure you the patriarchy is alive and well in Germany.

@@edelga04 I've never come across someone who seemed uncomfortable discussing it but that's maybe because I'm not uncomfortable with it. I'm glad it's being addressed though if it's a struggle for some because periods are a huge indicator of a woman's health.

Yeah. Everyone talks about periods in the newer generations. Maybe some older parents are uncomfortable. But we talk about them in class, in social settings, guy girl conversations. Etc etc.

Motherwort tea is also really good for period cramps - my mom used to make me drink it regularly, it's pretty bitter, but I rarely had pains because of it. My mom says she never had period cramps because she always had the tea, now I wish I had more of that tea :p

7:06 make me wonder about menstrual cups, if the suction is too tight on the cervix can this cause health issues in the long run? Like with blood clots or hinder the menstrual process somehow?
Normally menstrual cups are no problem if you use the right one (they vary in hardness) - that's why more and more people are trying it. But what I recently learned is that it could happen that it shifts a bit and blocks the urinary drainage causing a very painful kidney colic. But it rarely happens and it's easy to fix by putting it out and in again so it's no hindrance but an important hint for everyone who think about getting one :)

Interestingly enough, my dad is just awkward when I talk about my period. My mother is the one that totally shuts me down when I try to talk about it, especially around my father or strangers.

I think that this is something everyone should know. Even now, in my own religion, (Islam) women who are menstruating are restricted from doing many things.
We aren’t allowed to do many things, such as:
Joining in usual prayers
Stepping into a mosque
Touching anything of religious value
Talking to males about periods.
After doing some research, it says in the bible too, that a woman who is menstruating is impure. ANYTHING she touches is now impure.
Things like this are of course, not something that we can change.
But the things that happen because of them can.
While on Umrah (a Pilgrimage) I was left alone in the hotel for 2 hours by my parents because I had cramps. I wasn’t on my period, but they didn’t take me because I had cramps, this was only the second time, so I wasn’t too upset, but they left me there, and room service came in.
It was a man, and while i Saudi Arabia Too much skin (ankles, wrists) is considered improper, so I was forced to hide in the bathroom. Even then, in Pakistan, I was forced to throw my pads in a bin outside because I wasn’t allowed to let my grandfather see my pads?
I really do think people should be more educated on them, because I experience extreme pain when on my period, but it’s often brushed aside.

So I learned more about what a period is and what treatments are good for pain but nothing about why we can't talk about it. Most of the women and a good amount of my guy friends are cool with talking about it. One dude had suggest a adult pull while I was sleeping so I never had to worry about a mess and I just took a shower the next morning. So yay, didn't really get the video sorry.
I think the title was more of a rhetorical question, rather than the question that the talk was trying to answer. Like, the rhetorical question represents the attitude that they're trying to push
