  • Today we take a look at the updated BattleTech tabletop board game's "Beginner Box" to find out whether it’s a worthwhile introduction to this world of massive Mechs, or if it leaves MechWarriors saying, “meh”. Because in the 30th century, life is cheap... but BattleMechs aren't.

In this unboxing, we'll review the BattleTech Beginner Box tabletop board game. BattleTech is a tactical wargame in which players command squads of warriors who pilot various giant war machines called Battle Mechs. The game system includes details such as varying weapon ranges, heat generation, and specific hit locations - such as torso, head, arms, and leg - each having its own strategic value. The game is typically played on maps featuring pre-printed hex grids, but optional rules for hexless games are also available.
Does “beginner box” mean that it’s watered down, stripping away many of the the technical game mechanisms that provide the core BattleTech tabletop experience? Well, let’s start out by taking a look at what’s included in this Beginner’s Box.
    Contents:
    12-page Quick Start Rules
    Two plastic mech figures
    Two six-sided dice
    Eight cardboard mech standees
Seven additional terrain tiles featuring light and heavy woods
Booklet with “Golden Rule” book excerpt, glossary, and illustrations
Map of inner sphere with markety content on other side
    Two-sided paper map
Four two-sided, color MechWarrior poker-sized cards
    Eight color Mech character sheets
So there’s what’s included in the box. But how does the game experience compare to the standard edition? Does the BattleTech Beginner Box board game accomplish its goals of being an accessible introduction to the game system that still faithful to the BattleTech game experience?
Oh, I’d say: it definitely is. In fact, being a “beginner’s” version, I’m surprised that it actually retains nearly all of the technical to-hit look-up tables and roll charts of the standard version. I actually expected many of THOSE mechanisms to have been watered down and simplified. So, I can appreciate that. However, it’s a double-edged sword, as it could be a off-putting to a new player - as these charts and lookup tables do seem to date the gameplay mechanisms a bit.
But, as I mentioned, my apprehension at their presence turned to appreciation because that’s one of the fundamental experiences that BattleTech is all about. The quality of your tactical maneuvering is still going to be somewhat subject to the roll of the dice. You can do your best to improve your odds, but it’s still going to be up to lady luck to determine exactly where on your target that rack of twenty long range missiles you just fired actually lands.
And the Beginner Box does an excellent job of winnowing the minutiae you have to manage down to the essentials. For example, this version of the game doesn’t even include heat, which is a resource you must meticulously manage, lest you and your mech suffer extremely dire consequences - like, exploding in a fatal fireball. But then, I remembered that, back in middle school, when we were learning the game, we rarely tracked our heat anyway. So, it’s like back then we were playing the Beginner Box version of the game anyway. Except now, I can do it without the guilt of playing the game incorrectly. If only sixth grade me knew that one day, one day it would be okay.
They do also throw in just enough to introduce you to the lore of the BattleTech universe. The inclusion of the map and story have no bearing at all on the gameplay - they’re completely unnecessary. Still, they were included to help set the stage. How deeply you dig into them and immerse yourself in the lore of this universe is up to you though, of course. So, your mileage may vary.
If you’re interested in trying out BattleTech, but are worried that you’d be “missing out” on the true experience by going with the Beginner Box, don’t be. There’s plenty in here to get your feet wet, and have a true BattleTech experience.

In my day we had to make our own six siders, by carefully cutting cubes out of potatoes, coloring the pips with markers, and spraying them with urethane.
That’s the way it was and we LIKED IT.

Battle Tech (BT) was my gateway drug. Thanks to BT I now have an addiction to giant robots, imaginary explosions, and acrylic paint.

Catalyst's last two manufacturing runs on introductory rules did include sturdy cardboard maps and 26 miniatures each... but they ended up losing money on those sets. If they had to choose between cutting back on the box contents or raising the price, I think they made the smarter choice. A new player would likely prefer a lower and more accessible price point, rather than a whole bunch of cool parts to a game they haven't quite decided on.
The choice of rules to include in the Beginner Box seems like the better call, too. Stacking the basic To-Hit Modifiers is probably the trickiest part of the game to manage, and leaving them in does a better job of getting a new player used to the system than other tactical considerations like firing arcs, critical hits, and heat.

The price point for the GoAC box is meh. Or perhaps I should say a little overpriced. Plastic is very cheap. If it wasn't there wouldn't be so many new games being released with triple or more plastic minis for nearly the same price or slightly more.

There are a TON of board game releases from indie companies, for similar prices, absolutely packed full of plastic and cardboard pieces.
Catalyst was, and still is, very bad at marketing their products. Plus, the game did NOT age well, and really, really badly needs some kind of streamlining in many different areas.
I'm downright shocked they have never attempted to build on some of the foundation concepts of Battletech to either create their own unique IP, or a just simply make a much sexier version of BT.
Alpha Strike is a joke at best, and the fact they are STILL including AS cards, the same IRON WINDS REFERRAL, while reducing both the quality AND quantity of this products contents, does not tell me they have any real intention of standing behind Battletech, or are willing to really do anything with it.
This box feels like it was a direct response to the Hairbrained Schemes game release, hoping SOMEONE ELSE'S PRODUCT would help create more awareness of the Battletech name, because heaven forbid they have to work on, or even pay for that.
Heck, it even emulates many aspects of the visual design ascetic used in the "new" HBR game as well, or am I just old and crotchety?

My introductory set from a few years ago... has the nice sturdy cardboard maps... but came with a huge amount of HORRIBLY casted miniatures. I'm not exaggerating when I say that 1/3 of the miniatures were broken, missing body parts or just so poorly made that you could barely recognize which mech it was. The newer version seems to have WAY better mechs (which is the most important part for me). In Catalyst's defense though... I sent a complaint about the mechs including some pictures and they agreed it was pretty bad... they sent me a bunch of re-design mechs of way higher quality from Battletech: Alpha Strike (which was extremely decent of them I think).

An interesting side note: The original BattleTech game, Battledroids, had two plastic mechs in it too. They were the Griffin and Shadow Hawk. Even more interesting is that all three of these mechs came from the same Japanese show: Fang of the Sun Dougram. It also had cardboard playing pieces and terrain tiles, but it also had troops and tanks too.

Nicely done! I've not gotten any of the new stuff (cos I still have legions of the original BattleTech stuff in storage, including the oldest of old BattleDroids box) but I wondered if it would be something fun to acquire for my weekly D&D gaming group to play in times of DM burnout (just as we used it back in the 80s). I suppose the true test of the game's ease of use and interest would be actually sitting down with your daughter and playing the Beginner Box with her and seeing what she thought, whether you actually made a video of it or not.
Keep on having fun! You've got my subscription. :-)

A lot of the stuff he points as not being there in terms of rules are present in the core box, such as torso pivoting, mechs having internal structure, the old mech record sheets, and heat is present. The Beginner box lacks a lot of the rules from the core box. I might pick up the Beginner box for the mechs and give the rest to my shop or a friend.

As it was less than $15 on Amazon the two awesome premium mechs are well worth the money all by themselves, adding in all the rest of the goodies make this a smart buy, even for multiple copies. As I have all the cut out mechs painted up I can give all the other materials away to a prospective new player.

Removing heat in the beginner's box rule set is just too hilarious for me. I remember my start with BattleTech with MechWarrior 4, its CD being included in some magazine (PC Games I believe). I never got the history there, but had fun building some mechs and playing against the KI (yup, never played the campaign as well since I was so young I didn't understand anything, language as well as the history itself since I'm german).
And what did little me do first? Turn off heat in the settings so I can do as much pew-pew as possible without my mech shutting down every two seconds. xD

Regarding the maps. I have the edition that came with the nice heavy-cardboard maps (as well as basically every other edition). The problem was it was awkward to lay that one out with the literally hundreds of square feet of vintage paper maps that I'd accrued since the early 90s. So I although it's not as nice a material, I think consistency is important. Otherwise you end up with a "blu ray" situation, where you either just say that you're stopping at DVD, or commit to re-buying your entire collection in the newer/nicer format (assuming they went back and printed the previous mapsets in the heavier stock).

I bought the standard edition, A game of armored combat. The mech record sheets includes Griffin and there is no plastic mech of Griffin. So I decided I would go for beginners box to have that mech and an extra Wolverine, 2 extra maps, and mechwarrior cards. Will that justify the price? When Mechwarrior 2 was out in 1995 I got the trilogy. Then there was a chance to buy Titanium Trilogy and I did not even have a 3D accelerator card. And when I saw it it was a disappointment because the game engine distorted the game experience and later it was almost impossible to run because of compatibility issues with newer Windows. And yet I am glad I bought it, because there is a juicy game manual with plenty of mech specs.
So beginners box is fine because plastic mechs usually would cost $10 and there were extra maps and cards. So I feel it is still worth it. Getting plastic mechs is very hard nowadays.

great video very informative . My introduction to battletech universe was way back in 1994 In the form of MechWarrior 3050 on the super Nintendo and is one of the reasons I love giant mechs though robotech is the biggest influence for me. As for MechWarrior 3050 that game is why I love madcats so much and is my favourite much . I have done warhammer 40:000 for 20 odd years and love space marines (whole reason I do 40k) but have recently wanted to try something different and I was looking into battle tech and found this video. I'm a big builder and painter and looking at the models in this set I got super excited and ordered the box right away, I look forward to learning the game and diving into the rich deep lore because I love the fiction stuff I also may have bought a resculpt of the mad cat in metal though as far as I know is an Omni clan mech so not sure when I can use it just looking forward to painting it .Sorry for the long post just wanted to say thanks for the video and letting you know you have made me jump into the battle tech universe . Battletech has a massive accessibility problem that needs a 3rd alternative, rebuilt ruleset that's compatible with current tokens. There's a way to reduce complications without losing complexity. Complications increase gametime to the point where a single match can be a slog. Say what you want about Dark Age, but you could move those matches along very quickly.

which mechs do you get in the box i dont see any mechs that i remember, are there no assault mechs? are there any clan mechs? the biggest problem with the battletech game was that they only sold the best mechs as expansions. do you get any of the iconic mechs? like the warhammer or the axeman or the awesome or the mad cat or nova cat or the vulture?

    • @GameNightPicks
      @GameNightPicks  5 років тому

The Beginner Box includes a plastic Wolverine and Griffon. The cardboard ones are 2 Thunderbolts, 2 Griffons, 2 Locusts, and 2 Wolverines. I agree that I would have loved to have seen some more variety. A Crusader (one of my other favorites), Phoenix Hawk, Marauder, or a Rifleman, or even a Hunchback. Gotta love those AC 20s.

    • @darkstorminc
      @darkstorminc 5 років тому +1

The Awesome and Battlemaster are in the other box. But you also have metal minis from IWM. There are tons of them so choices aren't limited for those who get into the game.

    • @patrickcoyle5469
      @patrickcoyle5469 5 років тому +1

The assortment in these boxes is unusual because for many of these mechs, it's the first time they've been represented in official BattleTech product since a whole lot of legal worries back in the '90s (many of them were licensed from anime for the very first edition of the game), being redesigned just enough to avoid any further issues. Only the Awesome, Catapult, and Commando are repeats from the last few editions, but they're newer and more modernized sculpts.
And just to be clear, you don't actually NEED the miniatures to play the game. Like the cardboard tokens suggest, you can use anything that fits into a 1" hex and has an agreed-upon "front" side to represent a mech. The miniatures are just cooler.

I was really irked when I found out the base game didn't include rules for heat. Pain in the butt that it was heat management was one of the game's core concepts. It had a huge impact on your tactics. Also the charts aren't so bad when you consider the really low unit count. Most games I played were at the lance level (4 mechs to a side). Trying to play at the company level was agony but at that point your kind of breaking the game.

    Obscured - +1
    Long Range - +1

    WTF man...
My biggest gripe though is how the models are made of elastic plastic instead of hard polystyrene and that they come glued/pre-assembled but not painted. What's the point then... If it's about not having to need any extra work or materials - just make them snap-fit... It's a niche game anyway and there's a lot of people who buy these with an intent of working on the models and it's just making the experience miserable.

I have play Bt and bta and it's still the same slow boring game as it was the first time I played it in the 80's. The game needs rules to fit some where between BT and BTA. I love the hit loc in BT but not a fan of all the dag paper work. Oh my god the paper work. But on the other hand BTA you lose everything that is BT. I almost would love a BT game like Ogre (SJ). If the core game remade the shoot, movement and heat, more like 40K 8th that would be super fun and smoother.

I don't think stupidty is the driving factor. What I do think is a factor is speed of game play vs mobile and consoles. To get new players those are the competition, and that i think is what drives down the complexity of rules.
I think catalyst should get an app to go along with Btech, whether mech design or doing to hit numbers..
