ABOUT SANTA MONICA
Santa Monica is a city so rich in history, culture, and activity that there are tons of quirky facts about it that even locals might not know! Here’s a list of some of the more eccentric and less recognized information about beautiful, sunny Santa Monica.
BEACH BACKSTORIES
Did you know that Elzie Crisler Segar created the Popeye comic in Santa Monica in 1919? Legend has it that when Segar was living in Santa Monica, he befriended Olaf Olsen, a Norwegian sailor he met on the Santa Monica Pier. It’s believed that Olsen was the real-life inspiration for the famous comic book character Popeye. However, whether or not Olsen ate a lot of spinach is still a topic up for debate.
Santa Monica is also home to the Dogtown Movement of extreme skateboarders (immortalized in the documentary “Dogtown and Z-Boys”). While the influential Z-Boys were initially surfers, the group began skateboarding to practice their board moves. They quickly became full-time skaters and were constantly spotted on their boards throughout the city. It’s because of them that skateboarding went from a local hobby to a nationwide pastime.
While indoor volleyball originated in 1895, people in Santa Monica decided to take the sport outdoors in the early 1900’s and thus beach volleyball was born. Nets and courts began popping up on beaches along the Pacific Ocean and the sport soon became immensely popular, especially during the Great Depression. Today, beach volleyball is played by millions of people and is a mainstay of the Summer Olympics.
ECO-FRIENDLY FACTS
Los Angeles and Santa Monica pride themselves on being extremely eco-friendly. It’s no surprise that the first solar-powered Ferris wheel is located on the Santa Monica Pier at Pacific Park. The wheel made its debut spin in 1996 and has since been redesigned to feature 174,000 LED lights. The ride is so green that it even goes dark every year to celebrate Earth Hour.

Kev Mac done gave us another KM videos moment…” I’m a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!”
This dude is a real one. I appreciate the fact he doesn’t embellish his accent or demeanor to come across as attempting sound or look black. I’m white and am probably around black folks more than people of my own skin color - black folks society would consider street guys. I never feel the need to change my demeanor and find it embarrassing when other races do as such. I am who I am and if your down for yours people of all races gonna respect you for that. If they don’t they’re punks themselves. I personally can’t respect anyone that plays the role of actor changing his or her act depending on the crowd they are around.
I get that but someone like me I grew up in the projects and that was just how I was raised and My talk and accent is jus that way no extras. But I can always tell when whites or other races are fronting super extra on lingual.
@B.C.S. Brick City Soldiers appreciate it.
@@billysmith5130 FS We’re all products of where came from and that has a heavy influence on how we talk and carry ourselves. I got cousins in Oakland in a similar situation as you. If you talk to them on the phone you’d assume they were black. That said, people know what’s up and can pick out a fraud. I find it insulting to yourself and whoever you hang with to be fake and let’s be all the way honest, these white kids and other races as well will really stereotype black folks when they try emulate them. I’m gonna ride with whoever I’m with. Everybody around me knows that without a doubt and I get my respect without switching up how I act. Appreciate and respect your input on your personal situation 💪🏻
@@dallasswafford148 Iam black and respect your views on everything stay true to your self
When u hit that age of bout 11 or 12 and something happens u realize all ur friends are black of course u pick up a accent and dress the way ur friends do I definitely agree on still being urself tho but those type of people who put on that act everyday don't make it in this life anyway its where u grew up , got a cousin from Tucson who used to talk like the essays he just grew up in that just like I grew up with black friends. Ghis guy is definitely a real g tho good to see
I grew up with him, he has and has always been a stand up solid dude from the beginning. A savage on and off the mats.
Sounds kinda dumb. Being in a street gang is literally the antithesis to practicing martial arts.

I’m from UK and back in mid 2000s I took a trip to LA and stayed in Santa Monica by the Marina. Anyway one night at around 1am on my first night I needed cigarettes and thought I’d take a walk on my own from my hotel to find a store. It was a 30/40 min walk until I finally got to a gas station. Anyway I got what I needed, and as I was leaving two low riders full of what was defiantly Mexican gangbangers started asking me where I was from and speaking Spanish to me. I’m very light skinned Indian, so they must have assumed I was Mexican too.
So in the strongest British accent..I said “good evening, how you doing, pleasant evening tonight”…..they literally had the most confused look ever..anyway I just kept walking back to my hotel. And they started to follow me driving slowly at 5mph shouting at me ..it was an empty straight road..so I couldn’t exactly run anywhere!! Whole place was virtually deserted!
I just kept walking ignoring them and thought damn if I get shot I wonder how long it will take someone to call an ambulance!! After the longest 10 minutes of my life they finally sped up and shot past me!! I unclenched my butt cheeks and fast walked it back rest of way lol!!😂
Wow
You did the right thing I'm glad you're alive. I think I would do the same thing act stupid. If they ask me where I'm from I'm the same place where you're from.
Damn that’s crazy glad u good tho G 😂

His BJJ teacher Rey Diogo is a bad boy. I was gonna train at that school on Venice, right off Sepulveda. when I moved to LA in '05. I wound up at the Gracie Barra in Culver City.
Yeah man rey is the the man. Got a lot of respect and all those Carlson Gracie black belts are tough ass mfers. I wanted to train with him but chose a different gym.
Gersons a g I like that dude. My coach and him are friends from the old gb in Brazil.
@Anthony Galloni Yeah... He is a great dude. I am a writer and he is also a filmmaker, so we had several common interests.
@@mateocalderon6822 He really is. School has a really good vibe. I actually saw Gerson on an instructional video by Green Whale Productions that featured a lot of instructors in So Cal. I move to West LA on a Saturday and visited his school that Monday.
@Anthony Galloni For sure he is. Nima, Jeremy, Daniel, Brett, Nick, Sky all are tough on the mat. I just talked to Neems an hour ago. He was headed in to train. 😆
Authentic, great interview.

I'll tell you right now BJJ is good for one on one, when you know for a fact no one jumping in.
Yet if it's a riot or y'all getting down in the streets. You want to stay up, that's where Boxing and the rest comes in.
That’s why he said “in a cell”
Exactly why he mention on a cell with someone.
jiu jitsu in a street environment is kind of brutal. no tapping out, you just tear his limb or choke him to death if you want. am evil jiu jitsu black belt would be nothing nice
As someone that trains bjj I will box if I'm fighting but if I'm losing or know I can't win I'm gonna grab a hold of that mfer and bring him into my world for sure.
It's about being well rounded. Boxing alone won't stop a leg takedown, or help you when your opponent is on your back busting you in the head

How does it work in Prison when you roll with race (from what I’ve seen fro
other videos)
Ray Diogo is a great coach and school. I don't think he's lying if he said he name of the school, Jiujitsu is a small community, and a variety of people do it, from computer nerds, to doctors, to killers, and one thing you don't want to know is lie about having a jiujitsu black belt.
@@TreworldLegendary77 Nice.

Lil nut, what uppp bruh? I KNEW you had something to do with this interview, Holla at Me bro

So let me get this straight homie became a crip after 18 and he also was a Wood in the county jail lmao
That's how you know he got mad respect in the hood. No one can do that shit unless it's real family ties! They definitely got love for him.

Oh shit he's a black belt under rey diogo.. that's dope. Very few white crips that are just being themselves and what they came from, he seems like one of them.
Wussup Kev Mac
The dude on the intro kinda sounds like young Roddy from jet life 🤙🏾
man kev it was just getting good lol
My question is, did he ever go bacc to county & if so, did he roll blaqk then? When my set first started, there was this Italian kid that had a huge rep in the streets. He went to county at 17 & the woxods maxed him out something viscous. A mexican cat from the set was the 1st to hit county & the pen (RIP). He rolled brown & he won some & lost some but he never dropped his flag. They eventually left him alone & the blaqks respected him even though he was on the other side. If he had gotten laced prior, he would've rolled blaqk but he was the 1st to hit 18. He came out with a BIG tattoo covering his chest of the set.
I only know o/g white boy criminal and lil lazy from there, this is new to me
An you can tell homie is straight on survival mode by starting of the video with that “I do karate” lol an if I’m in a cell with someone I gotta survive loool yeah definitely nun to play with boi foreal
