Lol, when the nominations were announced I went to The Guardian to read what they had to say about Joker (as 3/5 reviews they posted were negative) and they didn’t disappoint. The gist of what they said was “but didn’t they read our negative reviews?! Didn’t they see our controversy?! This is so surprising!!” No, it’s not surprising. Only critics are surprised by its award success because of everything they tried to cultivate before and after the film’s release. Its film festival success, Guild success and awards nominations are telling a broader story about what this film actually is, and it’s breaking their hearts.
I can't explain until now why Marriage Story only have 5 nominations including for Driver, ScarJo, Dern and Baumbach from Original Screenplay. They deserved, at least, 3 more nominations like director, score and picture. And Banderas, Bale, Lupita, Erivo, Noah and the females directors was snubbed from the nominees.

I don’t think Scarlett or Margot gave a strong enough performance in Jojo Rabbit or OUAIH to be double nominated this year. If anything, their extra spots should have went to Awkwafina and JLO.
I have an out there prediction... So I think ScarJo is pretty much the heart and soul of Jojo Rabbit. She’s the loving character that rebels against the Nazis and people cry over her. My guess is that she not only gets nominated, but wins Best Supporting Actress. I’ve heard a few people saying Dern is vulnerable, and that this is more a career Oscar than her actually being the best (kinda like Glenn Close). ScarJo might realise that Zellweger is too strong up there in actress, and decides to go all out in Supporting.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire in cinematography, the poor dad in Parasite - these are passion picks and they might still get the number 1 votes they need to get nominated. Britain is indeed majority white yet media nowadays seemingly doesn't represent this distribution. @Diego Pisfil I was so pissed when Mcdormand beat Margot at the Academy Awards. For a start, Margot's performance was very nuanced and believable, a career best. Mcdormand's was good but pretty monotonous and repetitive. Secondly, she already had an Oscar anyway.

@Diego Pisfil I was so pissed when Mcdormand beat Margot at the Academy Awards. For a start, Margot's performance was very nuanced and believable, a career best. Mcdormand's was good but pretty monotonous and repetitive. Secondly, she already had an Oscar anyway.
The disrespect towards Marriage Story, wow. Also all the people who nominate movies for all the awards are cowards for not nominating Portrait of a lady on fire for at least best cinematography if not best picture as well. But I guess two foreign movies in best picture is something we can't have :/
