  • While working as a chef in #Hunza, one of our guests invited me to his home in #Lahore. They end up being really nice people and treated me to a 3 day trip. From #Pakistanmountains around #Islamabad to #punjabi history and Lahore night markets. This video is completely unedited and unscripted, showing real interactions on busy market streets of #Lahorenightlife.

My city Lahore.... Cute kids following you out of curiosity. I good to see how these small things put smile on your face. In Europe, it's cold and in addition, they put most fruits in cold storage and you don't even smell Mangoes there. In Pakistan, we smell and know what is being sold around us. Old Lahore has always been a busy place but 20 years ago it had like 30% less people. I guess after 20 years, it would be too busy.

Generally these street markets don't exist in Europe. We also don't grow mangoes and therefore the ones we get are imported which usually means they're picked way before and ripen on transporting ships. So even if they were out, they wouldn't have much smell or taste 😅

In 1981, one Pakistani rupee was pegged to dollar (1 dollar was equal to 9 Rupees). Then we stopped this link (maybe US/IMF was asking for it). After that, it was supply and demand. I bought dollars in 1993 and 1 dollar was equal to 26 Pakistani rupees. In 2013, I bought dollars at the rate of 98 rupees. I went to Thailand in 1996 and one Pakistan rupees and Thai baht were not very different (1 thai bhat was equal to 1.30 rupees). In 1991, Pakistani rupee was double than that of Indian rupee. Due to political instability and intervention in political process, Pakistani rupee is goind down but we know how to bootleg and find ways around to survie (and thrive). People used to have bicycles and well off people had motorcycles/scooters till mid 80s and only very few rich families had cars and referigerators at home. Eating out used to be only for labourers or migrants living without families (that is why you still see men mostly at low end restaurants who are workers & woman get mostly take away from there). Many things have improved since 1980s but happiness is not linked to material wealth.
