I feel like having 1M followers on tiktok isn’t equivalent to having 1M followers on youtube because tiktok fame just seems so short lived. Like once you follow someone you never see their content unless it shows up of your fyp. But for youtube the fame is long lasting usually and if you subscribe to someone it’s because you like and actively watch their content.

Absolutely, personally before subscribing to a channel I would have to watch a good portion of the videos before deciding to subscribe.

I saw someone say, “I keep up with 3 youtubers but with 200 tiktokers” and it’s a really good point. There’s so many influencers that come up on my fyp that I like but I’m not going out of my way to get to know them like with youtubers

and also because of that, 1 million followers on tiktok equals maybe 100,000 subs on youtube so it really is a very big difference

i COMPLETELY agree with you when you mentioned that a million subs on youtube isn’t the same as a million followers on tiktok. i never knew how to describe it but you explained it so well. i feel so bad for that gal who had no one show up for her meet and greet

I think one of the biggest differences between tiktokers and UA-camrs, in my opinion, is their ability to connect with their followers. UA-camrs benefit from being able to put more depth into their content which I think allows people to feel more connected to them. With tiktok, most people are going on tiktok to just mindlessly scroll so there's usually not a very connected feel to creators on the app. If that makes any sense lol

As someone who was like 16/17 when UA-cam started. I miss when people didn’t have a clue that they could make money of being on the internet. People were just posting videos to have fun not because they wanted it to be a job or get money they just posted videos and talk with each other because they wanted friends it was so fun

the problem with james charles is that he keeps going for the underage guys... but he keeps getting older, so in the beginning it was a 1 year gap, then 2, then 3, and now he's literally 5 years old than 18y/os and SEVEN years older than 16y/os, it just keeps getting creepier and creepier

As someone who went to the second year of VidCon and was a MOD the third year... the changes I've seen in the convention throughout the years is wild. There's a video I watched a bit ago of a girl stitching another girl who had no one show up for her meet and greet and I wish I had favorited it because she kind of hit the nail on the head with what she said. She said that basically the era of the influencer was dead in the sense that a platform like tiktok is soooo oversaturated with people who have become viral after a couple of videos but because tiktok is so short form that it's incredibly easy to move on to the next viral video. People who solely make content on tiktok are at the mercy of the algorithm, and it's much harder to build a lasting audience who will stay by you and stay interested in you than it is youtube. There's thousands of people who get to a million followers on tiktok so fast because it's incredible easy to entertain people for 60 seconds or less, but like you said, I remember how long it took super popular youtubers like danny or drew for instance to reach a million followers, because it's just reality that long form stuff doesn't hold people's attentions as much as short form does. But it's even the same for people who are popular on tiktok and make videos on youtube, generally their channel on youtube has significantly less followers than their tiktok. I also have a feeling that the rise in the popularity of livestreaming on twitch and youtube has something to do with the downfall of popularity in tiktok influencers, and I feel like twitchcon this year might be a lot more popular than vidcon. Also, the minecraft smp stuff is beyond my brain scope, maybe because i'm an Old and I don't get the appeal, but those guys have their fandoms on LOCK, and it reminds me of the british boy youtuber invasion of the early years.

I think UA-camrs feel more like actual celebrities is because A LOT of huge yters were adults and didn’t really display a child like ego. All the TikTok folks are kids. It’s that simple; they’re immature and self centered. I also think it’s a good thing we are no longer sensationalizing content creators, it’s safer and more logical.

i think also the difference between youtube and tiktok is... on tiktok you have no choice of what you watch cuz its what shows up on your fyp, and it's all down to the algorithm. on youtube (not counting shorts) the algorithm recommends you videos on the side or on your homepage, but it is in the end down to the viewer's conscious decision to decide to watch the video. s'why I find views on youtube much more valuable. hope that makes sense lol

Nowadays, anyone can get their 15 minutes of fame. I can count on both hands how many people I know from my hometown that have blown up on TikTok. That being said, I feel like this will be the downfall of the app. Fame isn’t anything when everyone is “famous.” Not to mention the drought of sounds/songs & trends are recycled every couple months. As for the dancing, it seems like we’re just recycling the same 5 dance moves. The worst part is that creators just rip off each other & get away with it. I give the app another year or two before it dies.

(Watching from Brazil btw) The thing with UA-cam is that it is maturing as a platform. The people using it are getting older, so they want more in-depth content; I am 25 and I watch deep dives of conspiracy theories, media or internet unfiction projects that are anywhere from 1-3 hours long, for example. But in this attention economy we're living on the internet, that's not enough because older people also have to work and do other stuff so we're not glued to UA-cam as much as a teenager is glued to TikTok or Instagram.
And we see the tendency to longer content in TikToks geared to older audiences (think home renovation TikTok instead of FNAF TikTok, for example) like "renovating my kitchen: *part 25* " which would be way better fitted as a UA-cam video or even a series. I've watched 40-minute timelapses of people cleaning their house. I've watched Michael Cthulhu, who makes 2-hour long videos of the entire process of forging giant battle axes and swords that cut through doors. But said videos are harder to make, so the subscribers don't have much reason to stay on the site after those videos are done cuz the next one is only coming next month or so. With all that, not only UA-cam views are diminishing, but when compared to TikTok's increasing views, UA-cam seems to be dwarfing at alarming rates, which is only worrisome to freaking investors.

So many of these tiktokers who went had millions of followers but literally nobody came to see them
Also I agree with the ego thing. I know a guy who had quite a large following on Tiktok and it was basically the only thing he would talk about as if it mattered
It was 1. weird 2. annoying and also it was like he wasn't self aware. You can have thousands-millions of tiktok but nobody knows you and your audience might not even regularly watch you

Girl, I agree with every single point you hit. It’s amazing how predictable these patterns in social media are becoming. We didn’t have a reference point prior to the last few years really, now we actually have the ability to look back and notice these inevitable cyclical changes.
UA-cam must know they’ve built themselves to be the ‘home’ platform, therefore ensuring the longevity and relevance of the site.
And I love that, I hate feeling like the platform I’m on will eventually drown along with all of my content/photos/videos to never be seen again. UA-cam truly feels like home, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

One million followers on UA-cam makes you more of an Internet personality vs one million on tiktok that makes you more of an influencer. You have to be likable and make a connection with your audience on UA-cam but on tiktok it’s just throwing out short form content people don’t have to watch 10+ minutes of. It’s less of a commitment for tiktok audiences

🇳🇱 hallo! i understand the whole bit of 1 million on yt vs tt but Darcei does have 2 million subs on yt. i think a lot of people just aren’t interested enough in influencers anymore. to buy plane tickets and get a hotel. you need to have money which is what a lot of people don’t have. just read her comments. i also think people didn’t even know it was happening, i didn’t at least. but those are my thoughts!

I feel like yt fans are pretty loyal watchers, even tho thr subscription box isn't always accurate, whereas on tiktok I'll watch 1 video, follow, and then just never watch them again bc they don't appear on my fyp

I’m not saying that some of the tiktokers with an insane amount of followers don’t put any effort into their videos, but some really are low bar. Meanwhile UA-camrs with that amount of subscribers, you can SEE the effort, FEEL the effort and passion they put into their videos- especially since they’re usually a much longer format.

You Tube's longer format also gives you a better picture of the content creator you're engaging with, and then if you subscribe it's because you genuinely like them and have built a parasocial relationship with them. On Tiktok, that's almost impossible.

I love Darcei so much her videos and her spirit are so fun, if I was in the US I wish I could have gone to her meet and greet!

Honestly I don’t think I’d go to any meet and greet for someone on tiktok, but I’d definitely go to a meet and greet for some of my favorite UA-camrs. I have respect for people on tiktok, but everything just seems so short lived and I’ve never really connected with tiktok as much as I had with UA-cam. I’ve met some friends on tiktok through fandoms, but that feels completely different.

I think a lot are going to move to twitch/live streaming rather than youtube once tiktok starts to die down. To me that more closely emulates the more spontaneous or I guess intimate feel that tiktok has. UA-cam seems so formal now that vlogging has pretty much died off and I can't imagine those creators putting in the extra time and effort to script, edit, film, etc a long form video when they could just hang out and do whatever in front of a camera

Philza isn't a kid XD he's in his 30s (he's one of the Minecrafter). I don't know much about John Green but in my mind, his audience was more teens so probably isn't a stretch that an older guy doesn't know John Green.
