Cultural identity is a very interesting topic for me. In this bilingual Italian and English video filmed in Florence, I'll share some of my thoughts related to my own cultural identity and how it feels for me being Italian American in Italy. For those of us hyphenated-Americans who take our ethnic roots to heart, our "belonging" neither here nor there can be a bit of a challenge, even here in the greater New York area. However, age has taught me that holding on tightly to my maternal and paternal Sicilian roots is all that's needed to navigate these choppy waters. Good luck everyone-else!!

I can relate to your experience from a French perspective. My American mother met my French father in Paris. I was the third generation born in Paris after my grandpère and papa.
I spoke no English upon moving to California at age two and have continued to speak exclusively French to my father. I went to bilingual schools, hold dual citizenship and have lived in France on and off. My parents moved back to France a few years ago and have never been happier. I’m definitely retiring in either Spain, France or Italy too.
I grew up feeling different than other white Americans many generations removed from their European ancestors. I most closely relate to American kids with one or both parents being French. It’s a very small subgroup. I’ve been told I have a different personality speaking French than when I speak English. In the USA, it’s all about efficiency and working whereas in France there’s more appreciation for food, arts and a slower pace. Language is more than just words. You take on the culture, norms and mindset of the people when you speak a language.
I see you in Firenze and it’s the same with me in France. Just pure joy to speak the language, eat the cuisine and reconnect with half my identity.
I’m teaching my daughter French here, but I’ve got newfound respect for my papa who spoke French to us every day. It’s not easy. I also speak Spanish having married a Puerto Rican and have gotten so assimilated into her culture that sometimes I have to remind myself I wasn’t actually raised in the Caribbean 😅
Btw, I absolutely adore Italy, the language and Italians. Italians were some of the coolest students I met while studying in southern France. I’ve been to Florence, Bologna, Rome, Venice and Naples.

Questa questione dell'essere più o meno Americano o Italiano è tutta Statunitense. È una parte culturale che riguarda anche persone più o meno di origine italiana, ma che esiste solo fuori dall'Italia.
Anche in Italia esistono città, regioni e sottogruppi, quindi mi sembra un po' che, parlando sempre dal punto di vista della città di New York, si stia sminuendo la ricchezza stessa della cultura Italiana. Anche in Italia, è ben difficile essere un vero Italiano se non ci si identifica con una zona particolare dell'Italia.
È bello l'attaccamento e l'interesse verso l'Italianità, ma in Italia si può essere accettati tranquillamente anche rimanendo Americani. Se non si è cresciuti in Italia ma in USA, ci sono cose che si vedranno sempre da un punto di vista Americano, ed è per questo che esistono questi video. Crescere a New York ti ha dato altre ricchezze, poi però è difficile confrontarsi con una persona cresciuta in Italia.
Se ti senti Italiano, per me va benissimo, però poi non devi farti prendere da facili ripensamenti, perché essere Italiani è meno facile di quello che sembra! Un bacio dal Veneto, ciao!
This question of being more or less American or Italian is all American. It's a cultural part that also affects people more or less of Italian origin, but it exists only outside Italy.
Even in Italy there are cities, regions and subgroups, so it seems to me a little bit that, always speaking from the perspective of New York City, you are belittling the very richness of Italian culture. Even in Italy, it's very difficult to be a real Italian if you don't identify with a particular part of Italy.
The attachment and interest in Italian-ness is fine, but in Italy one can be accepted comfortably while remaining an American. If you didn't grow up in Italy but in the U.S., there are things you will always see from an American point of view, and that's why these videos exist. Growing up in New York gave you other riches, but then it is difficult to compare yourself to someone who grew up in Italy.
If you feel you are Italian, that's fine with me, however then you must not get caught up in easy second thoughts, because being Italian is less easy than it seems! A kiss from Veneto, bye!
He's actually American-Italian. I'm so used to it being a big American guy who's great grandad came over 100 years ago and he only knows 100 words in Italian.
Trump only knows 100 words and he became President of the United States.
He's Italian American and he loves/promotes the Italian culture more than you do. You are just envious.

Tutto molto bello, ma l'America è il continente, non solo gli Stati Uniti...
Ce, l'Italia è uno stato e per riferirsi al nord o al sud dello stesso di dice "sud Italia" e "nord Italia".
Quindi, se l'America è lo Stato, cosa dite?
Nord America e sud America?!
Vedi che non ha senso... e proprio perché con questi termini ci si riferisce alla parte settentrionale e meridionale del continente, esattamente come Nord Europa e Sud Europa.
Siete statunitensi, fine, questo è il termine corretto.
Esattamente come fate confusione con la latinità e il termine "latino"... non sapendo che anche noi italiani siamo latini, i primi al mondo, semmai!
O "ispanico", convinti che sia una connotazione razziale (di razza ce n'è una sola ed è quella umana, anche se negli Stati Uniti parlate ancora di razze umane), quando in realtà tutti coloro che sono di lingua spagnola, e quindi in correlazione alla Spagna, sono ispanici.
Esattamente come noi e chiunque altro parli italiano, tipo in Svizzera, si è italici.
Quanta confusione e disinformazione a livello globale che fate... e questo perché siete il paese più influente al mondo grazie all'economia e via dicendo.
Ti dico solo una cosa, da italiano: VIVAT LATINORVM
Complimenti parli molto bene in italiano, hai un lessico ricco, scandisci bene le parole, hai un leggero accento anglosassone. Lo stereotipo che noi abbiamo dell'italo americano è della persona un po' rozza e volgare, tu non lo sei.

I have been trying to learn the Italian language for many years. I've never been to Italy, but it is on my bucket list. So i especially love when you do videos there.
I am currently teaching my 3 year old granddaughter Italian; mostly vocabulary and a few phrases (on DinoLingo)! She loves it.. maybe she'll end up teaching me 😊

Because your upbringing is American. You did the school there. You have been groomed for that system. The mentality, the way you manage life is certainly American. Some of your soul is Italian. In any case you are a fantastic guy with a staggering language talent!!!

Vieni a Roma? Se si fammi sapere perche sarebbe bello parlare un po di questo al bar per qualche minuto. Anchio sono di origine italo newyorkese haha nel senso che la maggior parte della mia famiglia è di origine italiana e di new york. E sono d'accordo con te in generale. Condivido quasi tutto ma devo dire: forse è il fatto che il mio italiano è peggiore del tuo, o che il mio accento americano quando parlo è più forte, ma io mi sento molto a casa ma allo stesso tempo qualche volta quando dico ad un italiano che sono anche italiano loro ridono ma poi spiego che ho la doppia cittadinanza, etc e poi capiscono, quindi alla fine mi sento a casa qui ma quando parlo la differenza fra io e gli italiani diventa più grande. E' una cosa bella, una cosa che ho accettato, il fatto che sono di origine italiana e fiero di questo, ma anche molto americano.
New York Italian-Americans are different from us from Pennsylvania. I grew up without Chinese food or Jewish delis.
For a lot of people it's easy to identify themselves as Italian-American just because they have italian parents or grandparents. I believe it should be a lot more deeper than that. To feel to belong to a certain culture, you have to had lived that culture, in a more intense way than only knowing few words in italian or having nonna cooking some traditional dishes at home.
Just to clarify, although in a smaller scale, I was born in south of italy but grew up in north of italy and I feel I belong to both cultures as I've intensely excperienced both growing up, I know well all aspects from both sides. If I had been raised knowing nothing about my south italian side, I would never feel or say that I'm originally from south .
Sometimes it feels like for a lot of people, having italian descents is a nice trend to be part of but they don't actually belong to it. Don't get me wrong, I'm generalising, and probably this is not your case since I don't know you, It'as just a feeling when seing or reading other's stories.

If they feel Italian they have all the rights. I'm proud of all this people with Italian heritage because they promote the Italian culture and costumes!
I think being from the sperm and egg of Italian parents or grandparents is enough lol. Don't overcomplicate things.
Bravo e Eloquente. But you are the exception rather than the average. You are getting integrated in the Italian way of life and the "thinking" of the real Italians. You are also educated and intelligent.
A far cry from the average Italian American. Tu non sei volgare e dovresti essere un esempio per tutti gli Italo Americani che vogliono veramente capire la VERA cultura Italiana.

First off just wanna say I love your videos been a follower for a long time. And thank you so much for everything you do! Amazing content :) But so for me........This is an interesting video to me because I know what its like but I experience it threw other people. Because I am american and I am learning italian. But the difference is I am not Italian American , im actually African American, but I love litany culture. I feel it when I arrive there. Think about it when I come back to the states. Live it while I visit all the small paese yet also in the big cities. But seeing my italian american classmates witness seeing their family names in a town and going to where their families is from is cool and special. But its nice to know how you feel and get a better understanding. And as you said alot of people wear many hats.

Beh tu sei un vero Italo-americano xke parli anche l'italiano, molto bene direi. Quasi tutti gli altri nati in America sono solo americani di origine Italiana. Nn parlano italiano e quel poco che sanno e' un dialetto storpiato negli anni, del paese d'origine dei loro avi. Peccato .
C'è però una ragione ben precisa per questo. Spesso noi italiani siamo piuttosto duri con gli italo-americani. Ma quelle persone che sono emigrate negli USA quasi 100 anni fa hanno vissuto tempi molto duri. Considerati "negri", affibiati con ogni appellativo negativo possibile, a volte anche linciati, hanno dovuto fare un patto non scritto con l'ambiente che li circondava, la loro italianità, la lingua prima di tutto, è stata messa da parte il più possibile nelle relazioni con l'esterno. Era una questione di sopravvivenza, spesso e volentieri in senso letterale. Quindi, ai miei connazionali, suggerisco di approfondire di più la storia dei migranti italiani in USA, ed essere meno.... uhm... cagacazzi :)
@@Plan73 La conosco benissimo la storia dell' emigrazione e la discriminazione degli Italiani in America. Quei tempi sono finiti. La guerra è finita.Sto parlando delle nuove generazioni, che la maggioranza non gliene frega niente di almeno imparare la lingua dei loro nonni, come ho fatto io. Proprio per questo sono cagacazzi .
@@bluesman1947 Il cacagazzi non era riferito a te in particolare ma a tutti noi italiani. Se le ultime generazioni si interessano dell'Italia ben venga ma non credo sia una cosa dovuta, ormai sono completamente americani da tempi pre-guerra, perchè chiedergli un collegamento con qualcosa con cui non hanno più nessun legame affettivo e/o culturale? Se c'è bene, se non c'è bene uguale.
@@Plan73 Io ero uno di loro, visto che ho vissuto li fino a 23 anni e da 45 anni vivo in Italia. E' vero che nessuno debba imporre qualcosa ad un altro. Per me forse, il legame è sempre stato forte e lo è ancora di più oggi. Viva l'Italia

Enunci molto bene. Sento troppi video su UA-cam di persone che parlano italiano con accenti regionali molto forti e riesco a capire solo poche parole. Sei molto facile da capire anche a velocità normale.
Most of the people in the United States, that claim to be "Italian American" have zero knowledge of the Italian language! It has been erased from their cultural heritage!
You obviously are fortunate, since you are obviously bilingual, and that gives you an open window into the Italian culture as well, and at the same time you continue to embrace your ancestors heritage without ignoring your identity as an American!

Do you think the Italian culture still be the same than lots of years ago? In This Last years we changed and we are becoming like the US mentality!! Lots of words and Way to speak in English are come in on italian language and the healthcare it’s becoming private! And other things!!
