Thanks again Travis. This was very timely since I'm trying to piece together a project very similar. Oh and thanks for introducing me to scroll saw village
Hey Travis, dumb question, don't you end up with a bunch of drop outs if you scroll as shown? ie dot over I, comma etc. Or is the intent that it would be glued to a substrate?
T bramblet Sorry for the late response. Nope, the gray area is what you cut out. The white areas are the wood. You can find the final pattern here if you want to take a closer look: www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/12658-word-art-intersecting-word-art-with-inkscape/?p=124196
Travis, just one question and you may have responded to it already. How do you make the patterns longer. I have ordered some before and they come in two pieces on one page and you tape them together with the dotted line, that way you get a 14" long sign .
Joseph Lambert Are you looking to print patterns that are larger than a standard piece of paper? If so, you can check out this video where I show you how to print oversized patterns. Hopefully that helps. ua-cam.com/video/gWwdKAxlZX0/v-deo.html
I really appreciate the tutorial but I have a question about saving the final design. Whenever I went to save what I had done, it only saved the part that was over the "piece of paper" that is there when you first open the program.. What did I do wrong?
+Charles Dearing It depends on what you're saving. If you're saving the SVG (the Inkscape file), it will save everything. If you're saving it as a PDF or printing, it will only do what's on the piece of paper. If you're exporting as a PNG, you have the choice of saving just the page (just the paper), the drawing (anything that has been drawn), or the selection (the items you have selected). I hope this helps.
+Scroll Saw Goodies I've been trying to save as .png and as .pdf and admittedly ya kinda confused me more lol. Are you on Facebook? I go by TheCharles Dearing on there. Ot I can be emailed at artistic_cowboy30 (AT) yahoo DOT com. Forgive my ignorance. Sometimes the easiest things can confuse me :/
+Jeff Horn Hi Jeff. You can start here. This will give you a list of classes for both Inkscape and GIMP. Enjoy! www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/1159-village-university-classes/
frehleycomet To save it, go to File>Save As and choose PNG. You can also print directly from Inkscape by going File>Print. You can also check my video on printing oversized patterns using inkscape: ua-cam.com/video/gWwdKAxlZX0/v-deo.html
Chris Stevens NP. I'm glad you liked them. I try to come out with new design techniques and projects from time to time. Hopefully I'll have another soon.
+Dave Hoffman Hi Dave. You just have to install the font on your computer. Once installed, launch Inkscape and it should be available. Each system is a bit different. Google "How To Install A Font" should help. Usually it just requires you to double click the font. A font preview should open up. In the upper left, it should have a button that says Install.
Nope. If you look at the design, the intersecting letters would naturally create the bridges for the centers of the O. But you can add some additional for extra support.
With Inkscape 1.1, these techniques don't work anymore. For example, selecting the two objects and then PATH | DIFFERENCE doesn't work. Thanks anyway for the nice tutorial.
Yah. I don't like how they do things now. It will take a few more steps now with 1.1+. Basically what you're trying to do is change it from a text object to a single vector object. Select your text. Go to Path>Object to Path. Ungroup. Combine. Then try it.
Thanks a lot man!! Even 4 years later it's still very helpful to me 😊
You Sir, have been very informative. I have been learning Inkscape by playing but your tutorials have opened up a whole new world for me...thank you.
Thanks again Travis. This was very timely since I'm trying to piece together a project very similar. Oh and thanks for introducing me to scroll saw village
Second video I have watched. Checked out you page and subscribed. Very informative and well presented. Thanks Travis
When you cut out the letters/words, do you start with the cursive letters first, then cut out the last name?
Thank you for this very clear tutorial!
This is a great technique for vinyl cutting machines, too! Thanks so much. I just subscribed!
I'm glad you found it helpful. I can see this as being popular for vinyl cutters too.
+Scroll Saw Goodies I just made my first ones today!
Thanks Travis. I was trying to do something similar just this weekend. This really helped.
Great information. Thank you so much. I'm new to this and I don't know how to put the bridges back in. Can you explain?
Awesome, I've been trying to do just that with Inkscape for making signs on my CNC. Great video showed me the steps I was missing,
Great job on the tutorial Travis. I was wondering how to do this as I would like to make my own patterns.
Hi Travis:
Great tutorial
Easy to follow and understand
Thank you very much

How do I find the class for Inkscape on Scroll Saw Village?
+Jeff Horn Hi Jeff. You can start here. This will give you a list of classes for both Inkscape and GIMP. Enjoy! www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/1159-village-university-classes/
Thanks so much Travis!
How do you save it to be able to print as a scroll saw pattern
frehleycomet To save it, go to File>Save As and choose PNG. You can also print directly from Inkscape by going File>Print. You can also check my video on printing oversized patterns using inkscape: ua-cam.com/video/gWwdKAxlZX0/v-deo.html
Awesome, thanks for the tip
Now I feel like an idiot. SORRY. Thought you had a soar throat from hell. Still, you do some great videos and VERY well explained.

How do you add more font to ink scape?
+Dave Hoffman Hi Dave. You just have to install the font on your computer. Once installed, launch Inkscape and it should be available. Each system is a bit different. Google "How To Install A Font" should help. Usually it just requires you to double click the font. A font preview should open up. In the upper left, it should have a button that says Install.
wouldn't you need the same bridges in the two letter "O" in the name COOK?
Nope. If you look at the design, the intersecting letters would naturally create the bridges for the centers of the O. But you can add some additional for extra support.

Those node clusters are disgusting lol
Your videos are fantastic. Strange squeaky voice. Did you have a cold.
Chris Stevens Nope. I hurt my voice when I was a kid.
