I normally shred a bunch of fallen leaves with my mower, mulch that on the garden beds, then cover with clean cardboard and then a layer of finished compost after the first freeze kills everything off. Gets me 1/2-1” of new soil by spring. And I cut everything at ground level and leave the roots in place for the earthworms to munch on over the winter.
Ya that works for u below the Mason Dixon line. For me my 32" bed are ice rocks here at 42N. I use black plastic and put it on as soon as I harvest. Gets compost before.
I know you said fertilizer (chemical) free but .....I work in the corrugated paper industry, there's a lot of chemicals in those amazon boxes. It wouldn't bother me a bit, I'd still use them...I'm just pointing it out in case it matters to you. Great vid!.
the cardboard is just their to cover the bed, but I hear ya. I'm sure there are some chemicals in the cardboard that might keep them from rotting or being eaten by worms
yep....try not to have a pile of blue tarps all over the farm....since we're already gonna get rid of the amazon boxes....we're just taking trash and making it treasure
Try using chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine for your dog as a supplement, one is trademark as cosequin. Will help build the cartilage back. On the one shot where you had the cabbage with everything Green in the bed you had lamb squirter which is really good to eat. Some call it weed others call it a lifesaver
Done herd about hill folks clogging like time segment of y'all clogging on top of your planter box, is it some sort of winter solstice hillbilly gardening serimony, nice dance by the way. . . Yaa Hooo.
Hey Josh thank you for the video glad buddies feeling better and you said that you can use an inter liner that is plastic but eventually it is going to seep into the soil and then into the food which will be no good
my brother....a plastic liner seeping into the soil around the garden bed wouldn't at all be of concern to me. PVC liners would be the same material that most water pipes are made of. V/s creosote from treated railroad ties. I wouldn't be concerned about a 6 mil plastic sheet seeping into the soil
hi Josh, many thanks for video. Could you please give details about how your giving Buddy the CBD. "Ointment or Pill delivery method, the amount based on weight and how often". Just curious as we have an aging Boxer named Bella. Merry Christmas and God Bless from Texarkana AR.
I give him some cbd drops from my local cbd shop, you'll have to decide what kind to use if you're treating your dog, check with your vet if you think you should, and a medication supplement called cosequin. Here's a link: amzn.to/4gsi00Y (from my Amazon affiliate page)
I grow a lot of vegetables for the wife and I as well as some of her friends. Hundreds of pounds of assorted veggies. Fine for us but many many people don't have that option.
well...I clean out what's in the coop and evenly spread it on the garden beds....probably about half a 5 gallon bucket on a 4x8 bed...just don't overdo it...but kinda tough to over do it this time of year...springtime you can put too much on and burn up your plants...trail and error my friend...see what works for you
Id consider throwing some grain in and let the chickens do their thing first.. but i like this as well. Im sure youve tried all sorts of things.. EDIT.. then i see the chickens trying later in the video lol
A simple gas powered wood chipper would speed that up with the plant stems. The heat in a compost pile with browns and greens is amazing! It's your canvass Josh!!!
There is no need to mix compost into the soil, only layered on top. You can use fresh chicken manure if left on top. Mixing compost into the soil reduces oxygen to the roots because you are basically making them live in sewage. Having the correct soil PH will do more for your plants than adding eggshells. Without proper PH, no matter how much calcium you have, the plant cannot absorb calcium and you will still have blossom end rot. Most soil has enough calcium already.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer Gary Matsuoka is a good resource to learn more about it. @GarysBestGardening . He explains how root rot never used to be an issue and how to fix it, amongst other things.
Yes anything bought out of a big box is no good for u. Get off ur lazy ass and go to farm and buy form farmer who u know has grown it right. U dont have to even leave most cities as they have markets where farmers bring in to sell to u rather then through some big crop who will put price up 50 to 200%
Great video, thanks for sharing your tips.
Glad you liked it, buddy! Hope ya learn something and don't have to eat the grocery store poison.

Supposedly using cardboard boxes (tape and label free) is still approved in organic certified farms.

tarps work too and can be used multiple winters

Just like we did in the tobacco fields when I was growing up, pull them morning glories out by hand!
I have a very large raspberry plot, store bought tastes like cardboard.
Also how can I keep Bermuda grass out of my beds and compost pile
I'll tell ya it's tough!!

What brand of cbd do you use for your dog. I have a German Shepherd with hip issues and would like to get him started on that. He is 13.
there are numerous brands....I get it at my local cbd shop just a dropper...about 2-5 mg ish
I grow a lot of vegetables for the wife and I as well as some of her friends. Hundreds of pounds of assorted veggies. Fine for us but many many people don't have that option.
Do you give buddy Frannys Framcy cbd? They are local in NC started in Asheville !! I used her cbd nightly before bed ..,They sell dog version
nope....I sure don't lol but I have a blend that works
When you say a little bit of butt compost, can you elaborate how much per bed?

hmmm...never thought of compost as sewage...interesting

I have a video on my channel of me putting a hole truck load of turkey poop in my garden spot
I’m guessing you know if any of your vegetables have any kind of disease you don’t want to put that in your compost pile.
I was going to make a comment on that. if it heats up, it will die off. tarp it?
if the compost heats up like it should....then no disease should survive
Thanks for the video
Nice video for a beginner or brush up course.
I think we can all learn little tidbits from each other, whether new to gardening or experienced

why not grow our own gardens...learn something and turn off them phones and tablets...teach the kids something
