    It’s a relief to see I am not the only person struggling to replace the filter cartridge. In my case, I think the location of the cartridge holder is the biggest issue. To access it I need to stand on a ladder and also take off my glasses, as otherwise I bang them on the side of the fridge. Then I can’t see to actually do the job. Now I’ve fiddled with it enough that I think the cartridge holder is not in the right position for me to be able to put in the cartridge and get the job done. GE, please rethink this design!

    I went to replace and didn't have the filter swung out far enough and thought you had to twist at that point. It came out after that. Tried to get it back in and it wouldn't go, so I dug out the instructions. Every other filter from other brands usually have it twist/screw in, and seeing this I noticed the tab broke off and thought it was stuck in there. It wasn't, I found it on the floor. I figured out that I hadn't swung it out enough and used a screwdriver to move the socket over to the full open position. This is the crucial part of the instructions, everything is easy if you swing it out all the way. Doesn't make it not a dumb design, but more emphasis needs to be placed on it.
    BTW, GE, making a filter this expensive and proprietary is the biggest douche move you can do with wear parts.

    Very Helpful video but it took me over 2 hours to figure out how to change the filter for the first, the directions on the manual are way different. This video is what helped me figure it out. It should not be this complicated to change a water filter.

    Hello my fellow frustrated GE water filter replacement friends!
    Here is the solution that worked for us after 2 hours of struggle.
    The challenge is to make absolutely sure that the old filter is open all the way to 45 degrees before removing. The filter can be removed even if it has not been opened to the full 45 degrees. The new filter will not align if the old filter was removed before being opened to the correct position. To resolve the issue a small flat head screwdriver was used to gently move the filter connection opening to the right. Be very gentle moving the opening. Once in the correct position the new filter will install with a firm push to seat properly. Once installed swing new filter back to operating position. We hope this is helpful. It worked for us.

    I hope the engineer that designed this filter interface has been fired. This is the most stressful filter change ever. Doing exactly what this video says to do, in addition to reading the instructions, I still managed to break the plastic tabs on the filter, ruining a brand-new $50 filter. In addition, the broken piece is nowhere to be found and I worry it's lodged somewhere inside the manifold assembly. So no I worry that the plastic shrapnel will some day block the water from coming out.
    Way to go GE.

      All so they can monopolize the filter business! I thought that sorta things was illegal. Then again, support enough war crimes with materials, and you don't have to worry about puppets meddling in your business.

    GE- you HAVE to do better on the price of these filters! $55 for something that is entirely too difficult to replace, is ridiculous. Putting these in and out should be incredibly easy (especially for older people), but it's just not.

    I will never ever buy a GE appliance again..inserting the water filter is beyond ridiculous… the instructions are horrible, trying to align the stupid tabs ect..I will never recommend GE.. I’ve read the instructions and viewed the all the U tubes..

    After multiple tries inserting the water filter, I cannot get the filter maintenance alert screen to go off. Any suggestions?

      Me too. Filter is in, door shut and still says filter is off. No water coming out. Ugh

      ​@@joleee1308 Even after I quit trying to twist the filter (which the instructions with Amazon's Blue Max filter specify), it took me several tries to seat the filter.

    So I bought a top of the line GE package. In the past I've always bought the cheap stuff to save money. Incredibly frustrating to force me to replace a $65+ cartridge every 6 months. And my dishwasher gurgles so incredibility loud when it drains and my convection fan is very noisy almost unusable and we have replaced a tri-burner on the stove top. I'll never get a GE appliance again.

    They must hire appropriate model to stand and install. At 5'2" and 80 yrs old, I must stand on ladder to "attempt" to replace. It must be proper size [short 1 stepper] or you're too tall to bend and work with replacement. Though I like everything else about the French door GE that I have, everything the filter is more than maddening and I've certainly told my 4 children, all 24 of their cousins, all my extended in-laws on both or our sides to step away, step far away from GE refrigerators. My double oven-fine so far; my gourmet range top - another disaster. Within the first 3 yrs of purchases, have had to buy replacement burner knobs and need them again. If one tries to wipe clean the range top, in that same amount of time you will lose the printed directions of positions. How can a corporation in good conscience and at the price charged, sell such a product. Why did our parents and grandparents appliances last 50-70 years. Apparently their good quality did not sufficient coin to the company profit drawer. One small pro feature, a poor person cannot afford this "quality" frig & rangeso they will not have the. same problems.

    Make sure the receptacle is fully open to a 45 degree angle before trying to insert new filter.

    I would suggest GE to have number instructions and showing how to specifically put the new water filter in step by step for those people who are elderly and need visuals. I am also frustrated with the new water filter as well GE. I am getting ready to go grab a hammer.

    I bought a new GE RPWFE water filter for my GE Refrigerator. It is not made the same as the old GE RPWFE water filter. The end that fits in the refrigerator is made differently. Will this water filter still work in my refrigerator.

      Well the instructions in the owner's manual specifically tell you to turn the filter 1/4 turn to remove and install. Hmm?

      The last time (fourth time) I replaced the filter, I still followed my previous written instructions to "Line up word "BACK" on the back and TWIST to the left." This has always worked for me, but with the new filters I am wondering what has changed since I can no longer do it with previous instructions that worked!

    Thanks for this - especially the reset after replacing the filter. Previously I had to put it in and take it out multiple times for the reset to "take". GE needs to rethink this interface; it is poor.

    I spoke with a rep from GE and after several tries to correct not being able to get the screen to clear, she had me move the fridge out and unplug it for 30 seconds. Just so simple! It worked and no need for a repairman.

    One design adjustment that might help is if the compartment into which the filter goes were clear so that we could see if we had everything aligned properly. I was finally able to get the new filter up into its compartment and secure it with a twist to the right but it seems wobbly and maybe not as properly lined up as it should be. The water dispenser is working, though, so I will hope for the best. The whole process was more difficult than the instructions led me to believe it would be.

    Have the GE Profile refrigerator for about 6-7 months. Filter change light came on, removed old filter and installed new one, no problems at all. Super simple.

    This water filter is a snap to install but ONLY if the gray receiving unit is rotated outward when you take the old one out. There is a design flaw. The old filter will easily come out if you pull it without rotating the filter outward, but that leaves the gray receiving part in the wrong position, so the new filter will NEVER fit in place until that gray part is rotated. We used a flathead screwdriver to gently twist it.

      Inside my refrigerator there's a sticker with the model number and serial number and a QR code. The code linked me to my owners manual, which directs an installation of this filter that is different from the video. This may be your problem. This video is not accurate for placement of all RPWFE filters! With my fridge I had to insert it with the "front" up at the top, then turn it clockwise! (the video clearly says NOT to turn it). I hope this helps you!

    On my model PYD22KYNFS French Door refrigerator, I have to unlatch and swing the cover out fully, to about 45 degrees from the closed position to remove the filter. Even though my GE manual says to rotate the filter counterclockwise then pull out to remove it, that is wrong. I have a gray (not black) cartridge holder - the plastic piece that the nozzle on the filter inserts into. Using the instructions that come in the box with each filter, I simply pull it straight out, I don't twist it.That works every time, and very smoothly. With the new filter I line up the word FRONT, push it in without turning, and swing the filter back to its operating position. Then I close and snap the cover shut. It works perfectly and doesn't take much effort. The video is misleading when it shows the word BACK toward the front (they meant to say that is not the way to do it, but they were not very clear), so don't do it that way! I have more difficulty remembering to not follow the manual and use the instructions that come with the new filter than anything else.

    I just bought my refrigerataor in September. The icemaker and the water quit working in January so I bought a new filter RPWFE and installed it with no problem, but the ice cubes are extra small and the water steam is so small that it takes a long to time fill an 8oz. cup. What can I do to fix it? Is there a reset button that I should have used? I sure hope there is an easy way to fix it.

      I am having a hard time to replace the water filter on my GE, this is the 2 nd time I replace it, but thia time the filter is not swing back, and I dont know whats happend, but I will return it if it still not fit in, and I order it original from GE, not from others.

    Notice at 0:59 you see the word FRONT is facing interior of refrigerator. At 1:20 be sure the word BACK is facing you, so it swings back toward the outside of refrigerator.

    My new microwave vent turns on immediately when turning the microwave on to cook. There's no heat at that time. Is that normal? It is not turning on in response to heat. I cannot turn it off . It is noisy.

    How do you flush the new filter out or bleed air out of the lines if you don’t have a water dispenser? I have an ice maker in the bottom freezer and NO water dispenser in the door. Model # GNE29GMKBES

    There is no way this filter can be removed and replaced with a gentle pull or push like this video shows. Redesigned but not for the consumers benefit, these filters have a little tab snaps off when you pull the filter from the socket so don't think you're going to be able to insert your new filter easily and check it because when that tab breaks you’re forking out another 50 bucks to GE. I've had my GE refrigerator for three years, and I never had a problem removing or installing a GE branded water filter until now. Worst decision ever buying this GE refrigerator I will never purchase any GE kitchen appliances again between filters that go by time and not the amount of water used to constant condensation inside the fridge and an upper ice maker that creates one big ice ball and just because I'm here their stoves suck too.

      Hello RIck, I followed the instructions, and mine came out fine. I installed a new filter, and as indicated, and it worked perfectly...Try again.. This video is very helpful as well. I watched it before, attempting to replace my filter...presto, and that was that... Good luck..

    First off, the filter does NOT come out without super strength effort. Now we can't get the new $55 filter back in. It does not fit. My sister is getting ready to use a mallet!

    I have been changing the filters on my refrigerator for 3 years now and today I thought I would lose my mind! I finally went to the troubleshooting before I cracked something off and found this:
    "If the white and gray parts on the filter housing inside the refrigerator are misaligned, the filter is prevented from being properly inserted into the housing. To correct this:
    Insert something round (for example, the handle end of a wooden spoon) into the white portion of the manifold in the filter housing.
    Note: Do not insert anything sharp inside the filter housing such as a screwdriver.
    Move the end of the wooden spoon in the filter housing toward the opened filter cover in order to match up the white and gray portions.
    Remove the spoon and the filter can now be inserted."
    It solved my problem!

      Thank you, I was having a terrible time getting the new filter to fit. This wooden spoon thing worked and also I found out to not twist the filter as the manual says, just insert with front facing out. Whew, saved a repair call.

    Video a big help! However, when running water through (5 min) first pitcher was cold water the next 3 was hot to warm water? What happened?

If you were running water for a few minutes as part of the filter replacement process, it’s possible the water in the chilled section was depleted after the first pitcher and the next few pitchers of water hadn’t had enough time to chill. It can take some time for the water to chill again if the tank has been depleted.
      We hope you now have chilled water again!     This filter is created so that it can't fit into the housing incorrectly. Unfortunately, it is not created with anything that will help you fit it into the housing correctly! It's just hit or miss every time. If GE employs ergonomic engineers, they are not doing their jobs with this filter/housing. How about adding something to the end of the filter that glides the filter into place? What we have now is simply a bad design.

      It's 3 years later now but nothing has changed! Still struggled for many hours to fit in the filter until I decided to buy a new set of filters. Same problem. No more GE refrigerators for me!!!

    I leave for the winter months so my refrigerator is never used. When I return the monitor tells me the filter needs to be replaced. At $50. a piece I don’t want to purchase another new filter! How can I reset the filter?

      The new one will be a lot lighter…
      The weight comes from the filter being saturated.

    So what about models like the GNE26GSDCSS that don’t have a water dispenser to run water through. It only has an ice maker. So who to I bleed the air out?

    These directions about front facing out are confusing. With the door and filter holder pulled open, when you install the filter, the BACK is what faces you. Install it so FRONT is out once you push the filter back against the wall NOT while the door and holder are pulled out to remove the filter.

      Dear GE we're going by the your video-maybe watch & see where we're lead astray? BTW-where in the video does this "mythical alignment" occur? It's alluded to but not demonstrated. She NEVER pointed to the word "Front" when announcer spoke only to the Red rectangle. Which she positioned at 12 o'clock [⭕️video commentary] which promptly rotated the word "Front" 90d Right & Inward toward the back of the fridge [⭕️video commentary]. The word "Back" would then face toward the RFID reader. What validation tools does GE quote/show to prove correct alignment? [The word "Front" on the cartridge only faces outward twice-where I can read the word. 1st-Prior to swinging the cartridge out for replacement & 2nd-after install prior to closure of compartment door. Perhaps GE defines inward, outward, front, & back differently😅

    I have purchased this filter for my GE fridge and it is the correct filter .... the problem I'm having is that it does not appear that the old filter will swing out, nor does it appear to be made to swing out without breaking something ... in no case does it swivel as it appears in the video.

    I just connected the water supply to my PFE28KYNCFS refrigerator/freezer but the "replace water filter" light will not go off. Th filter has never been used! I have removed and re-installed the filter several times and have checked for leaks and proper alignment but the light refuses to go off. There is no re-set button. What am I supposed to do? The owner'
    supposed to do? The owner's manual says nothing relevant.

    I just bought three new filters, which are a bit different than the old style. I replaced one today with no problem but now my water dispenser will not work. It gives me a message, " Replace water filter Dispenser off" I have had this frig for 5 years and NEVER had a problem with replacing filters every 6 months until now. HELP???

      Hi Cindy. I am sorry to hear of the concern. We are glad to help. Check the filter area for leaks on or around the filter. If there is a leak, in most cases pulling and replacing the filter will resolve the leak. Also, when the filter is correctly installed, the word "FRONT" will be showing. If "BACK" is showing, then reverse the filter reinstall. This should resolve the concern. Thanks, RF

      I'm having the same problem right now! I just bought 3 new filters- which I've successfully changed in the past- and I've been fighting with this one for about an hour! It goes in, I run about 2 cups of water out and then it stops and gives me the same message. "Replace Water Filter. Dispenser OFF". Then I put the old one back in and it works just fine.... take it out put the new one in, runs a little bit of water out then quits. This is ridiculous! Especially since I've done it before. Now I have to call service to help with a stupid filter? I HATE this fridge!@@geappliances

    My new filter only seats when the “Front” label is facing up & not to the side facing outward. Then closing the door is difficult & filter comes unseated. What’s wrong?

    The thing won’t twist out. When I have it aligned, the “front” to the front, the filter sticks out. If I twist it to the right, it seems to pop in but it won’t swing left up again the side of the fridge. Not sure what to do. I bought an expensive $55 filter that I can’t install. The mechanism it goes into does not seem to be broken. It just won’t swing and I don’t want to force it. Ugh! This is frustrating!!!😖

    This video does NOT cover the installation of this filter in ALL GE refrigerators!!!! I tried to install mine as the video says, only to get incredibly frustrated! Do yourself a favor and scan your QR code inside your fridge and look up your owners manual that way. In mine the owners manual says to place it with "front" up and push, turn clockwise!

    I took the old filter out and no problem. Took it to the store to get a new one and it refuses to go in. Now I have the new and the old one and I didn’t mark which was the new. One is heavy and one is light. I am hoping the light one is the new one, making the heavy one the old one… I hate this refrigerator and I am ready to scream and get rid of it, only two years old! I’m going to take the filters to the appliance store tomorrow and have them show me how to insert it…xxxxxxx GE

    I replaced the RPWFE filter in my GE refrigerator a few months ago and received a message saying to replace only after a few weeks. The process in replacing the filter is also ridiculously tedious.

    I have never had success installing this filter. It is a horrible design and placed way too high to ensure that you have the cartridge at the proper angle for installation, and I'm 6 ft. It's pretty pitiful that a serviceperson needs to come out to install this each time it needs to be changed lest I force and break something.
    The instructions are vague and each time I constantly worry that I'm applying too much strength and will twist or break something. Turning the filter on the grey unit will strip the screws and there is no noticeable click to indicate that the filter has been properly inserted. Furthermore the holder does not swing fully back to the left so that you can close the cover. I fear that too much strength and pressure applied to the cartridge will cause damage to the cartridge or the holder.
    1. An easier way to install the filter is needed.
    2. The filter should be in a more accessible place.
    3. Less costly filters should be made.

    I followed the instructions for removing the filter. That was easy enough but installing a newly bought rpwfe ($50 btw) filter is another story. It doesn’t seem to align right. Frustrating as hell. I guess I’m gonna have to buy a pitcher filter like Brita or zero water. Easier n cheaper in the long run. Thanks GE (sarcasm)

    GE -- this system is horrible. Shame on you for charging us $40 twice a year when a generic filter is $15. I have defeated your DRM and will never again purchase a GE appliance.

    How do you reset a model GFD28GELEDS?
    It is touch-based, but no touch screen and no labels for filter reset.
    It simply keeps telling me to replace the filter, which has already been done.

    I've now spent two days trying to install the new filter to no avail. I've lined it up exactly as depicted and it won't make a solid connection. When it does make a slightly solid connection, the housing won't close all the way. Also, the replacement has a tab longer than the original, so that could be causing the problem as well. Very poor design, GE.

      Same here. Mine says “dispenser off” and troubleshooting guide is no help. I have it in correctly even trying another filter in case that one was defective. Did you resolve it?

    This is a royal pain! We can't get the new filter back in no matter what we try or how many times we've watched this UA-cam video. We called where we purchased our frig from and they said they get complaints all of the time. I now have to pay for a technician to install a water filter!?!? Come on, GE! Ridiculous!

    Ge thanks. I appreciate how you force us to buy a $50 filter every 6 months. I feel like I have been scammed. I waited to find out what happens when I go past your deadline and sure enough the water doesn’t work. What a ripoff and every 6 months we get ripped off again

      I had to go and buy a new filter. With help from a neighbor, the installation was done. Neighbor also mentioned that this was a poor design and also was too much aggravation to deal with.

      Hi Dan - I'm sorry you're having a problem installing the filter. You want to make sure the filter is facing the right way - there is a front and a back on this filter (which is marked). If you've purchased an off-brand filter - rather than a genuine GE part - it may not fit. So you may want to check those 2 things. Thanks -CC

      @@geappliances We cannot get a GE filter in. It was very difficult to get out of the slot and now we cannot get the filter to "slide" into place. We have it facing the correct way but are having to put so much pressure on it we are afraid we are going to break it. Not sure what to do now.

    Be sure you swing the old filter all the way out before removing it or you will not be able to install the new filter !!

      My filter popped out when it was back in the “little box, couldn’t rotate grey receptor back out. Called GE, tech told me to use a wooden spoon handle to rotate out, it worked, new filter popped in and stayed that time

    The word "FRONT" needs to be seen after replacing the cartridge. Initially, as I didn't study placement of the old one, I thought "FRONT" was going to be at the 12 O'clock position...but no...its at the 3 O'clock . GE would have been better off labeling a cartridge with "TOP" and "BOTTOM" and huge red letters "DO NOT TWIST!" Also color coded markings so everyone aligns the fikter properly. They obviously failed to do a pilot study on this one.

    2 gallons of water?! That means the light will come on in 3 weeks telling me that I need to replace my water filter again! If you're going to charge an arm, a leg, and your first born child for a new water filter at least you can make one that once installed you only have to run about 40 ounces of water through it and it's ready to go.

      Hello,
      Running the dispenser for about 5 minutes removes air from the system. However, this does not affect the performance of the filter!
      The filter cartridge should be replaced every six months or earlier if 170 gallons of water has been dispensed or the flow of water to the dispenser or icemaker decreases. -SH

    GE instructions/yours have unexplained inconsistencies. WHY does the video show her WIGGLING the filter up and down? Why do you at about 1'13secs say to align the top of the filter with the holder by facing the word "Front" outward? She demonstrated no alignment step. [In fact still has the filter well below the top glass shelf] then points to the red rectangle 90degrees to the left of the word Front. AND then immediately turns the word Front 90 degrees INWARD. Exactly how/where does the mythical alignment occur? Validation tools proving proper alignment? No matter what a bunch of people have tried-still says Replace Filter. 7 months GE has left me with a very poor impression of their engineers and products. Tried following your instructions to the letter. Nothing works. My husband's a lawyer and said he's never liked GE products. But I wanted them-fool me once----

When the filter or bypass plug is correctly installed, the word "FRONT" will be showing on the filter and the front label will be visible. If "BACK" is showing, then reverse the filter or bypass plug and reinstall it.

    Omg to replace the filter is HORRIBLE. I bought 2 and neither work tried to get help and had someone read me the directions, then we I asked for someone who knew how to do it she put me on FOREVER HOLD!!!!!,
    Then I called back and watched the video another person gave me and that didn’t work
    Horrible service
    Horrible engineer who designed this…..appears everyone is having problems

Nobody knows how to replace the filter after I’ve put in two different filters. The message comes back up replace water filter. Nobody at your place knows how to use it and I can see by all the other comments how bad it’s been. The filter I’m replacing is our PWFE for model number PFE28KYNJFS.
