Once you understand this bike, the idea that it's dull goes out the window. It's big, but it's balanced and very stable. The motor doesn't rev high, but it's full of very useful midrange that comes in very handy (ECU flashes are also popular and open it up further). And the second-gen STs have electronic suspension adjustment and an ECU remap. Very few niggles. Can do nearly all regular maintenance in your garage. Can't recommend more!
I agree, simple is better. I just bought a leftover 2023 Super Tenere ES with 0 miles and it is an excellent bike. Engine oil change every 4000 miles and shaft drive oil change every 12,000 miles. Plenty of torque and no worries about it breaking down.
Calling the Super Tenere a "poor mans bmw gs" makes it sound like a lesser bike that should only be purchased for the lower cost. I'm looking at this class of bike for extensive touring around the country over the next few years. For that, reaching destinations and returning home are the only truly important features. I can buy either bike, but this use case renders the Super Tenere the wiser choice.
Fair enough! I think it's the right choice. I don't think i would trust a BMW for extensive riding, but on this it's a bike that doesn't have many bells and whistles, but i think its the reason its brilliant.
I had a GS 800 for 100.000 km and got some serious problems, now I got a Super Tenere SE (2016) with 50.000km and nothing just changing the oil and regular maintenance (that I do in my garage)... I’ll keep this bike until 150.000km for sure
Yeah i've heard this alot. But once you take that bmw pill you gloss over the problems. BMW's are fun if they are working. But it seems guys who get them have much more money than me. And if there is a serious problem they just pay to fix it, or it's under warranty and they don't see that money disappear.
I agree with you totally. I'm a motorcycle mechanic and I've owned hundreds of different types of bike including a BMW r1200gs. BMW design their bikes like their cars. Completely over engineered. Expensive components that fail. Delicate cambus electrical systems. Servo assisted brakes. The pump fails and you lose 80% of your braking. It's happened to me while riding. It's a shame that BMW build their bikes to purely get you to constantly spend money at the dealers while owning it. I've owned loads of Japanese adventure touring machines, which don't have these constant annoying and expensive problems. The Xtz1200 tenere is on my shortlist for my next bike. I owned the original 750 super tenere in the 90s. It was a brilliant bike, with loads of power.
It sounds like Yamaha is the "Toyota" of motorbikes. I have watched lot of UA-cam videos and they all say Yamaha is as good as BMW, BUT its more reliable than BMW, cost efficient in terms of buying and maintaining it.
Yes they are. Over the 36 years of riding, Yamaha has never failed me. From Maxim, to V-max all 4 Street bikes have over 110.000 miles. Still clean, fast and reliable.
I’ve owned two now. Travelled all over Australia on the first one. Best bike ever. Not sure why you wouldn’t adjust the video title to ‘wise man’s alternative to the BMW gs’. Other than the title, enjoyed your video thanks 👍
I know a guy on youtube unfortunately forgot his name he bought one brand new in 2014 its been 8 years (2014 to 2022) he still running it around America and it still works like brand new no major repairs no nothing just regular maintenance oil/tires changes etc that he does by himself You can only see and expect this from Yamaha meanwhile BMW is like a luxury car filled with electronics that won't last long
I had a GS , a Yamaha is reliable & pretty much does everything a GS does. In Singapore the Yamaha depreciates less. Reason is obvious, any workshop can maintain it. I don’t have to baby it. Still deciding between Tenere & FJR ???
I had both for a while and sold the Super T. I miss it a lot. I love my FJR and really, really miss the SuperT. I rode both of them long distances. If I could only have one in retrospect..I'd go Super T.
Ive had both. Newer models at that. FJR is faster and quicker and I used the adjustable windscreen a lot....Super T is better at everything else from comfort to ride to ease of moving at low speeds. For me it would easily be a Super Tenere. I don't think Ill ever be without one tbh
If you are looking at Adventure Bikes to actually go on adventures...like long adventures...the ST has to be near the top because the reliability has to be at the top of the list. If the cost of ownership and, more so, the possibility of your bike breaking down on a trip is not your main concern then you are not really looking at an Adventure bike for going on long trips. Me, the only bike I am looking at is the ST. Love my R1 and I am sure I am going to love my ST, when I get one.
The points on oil-burning in BMW engines as normal @~7:20 that's a common issue with the boxer style engines and Subaru is notorious for it too. Great engines also, but they do use oil. Has to do with the horizontal pistons and gravity and the way the pistons/rings wear. Not much of an issue in new engine, and comes on gradually with wear. Subaru had a huge recall on it in Outback engines from like '09-'14 using way too much so owners were then getting compensated for it.
One thing is buying a motor bike that you can go around the world with trust and peace of mind, other thing is riding something that you are not sure it will arrive the next corner without an issue, I could well had bought a gs but instead I rather have a peace of mind every time I go for a ride, if people wants to throw money away they should consider helping people who are starving....
I’ve owned a Harley of some sort over 20 years, never had a single issue with any of them. The ☝️ I have now is 20 yrs old and no issues..at all, none. I beat my ‘12 road glide up and man it’s a tough bike. Hell I laid it down several times in one day lol. Long story. I would ride my {03} anywhere today. Never owned a bmw bike. Had a “14 - 320i and I considered it a PITA. Expensive to maintain. I’m looking for a used S10 to tour on now. Love Yamaha.
Guys hope everyone is well. great video by the way.any advice for a newbie rider .looking for a long distance sports tour bike (fjr1300) thoughts .not very tall .thnx
As a new rider the fjr1300 is really a fast bike. But very capable. The super tenere is great too byut heavy and tall to start on. But if you are set on these large touring bikes look at the st1300 as well. great deals to be had.
Has anyone had any experience with KTM?. I'm a Yamaha fan and have only had Yamaha actually. But I've been finding some good deals on KTM 1090, 1190 and 1290. I found a 2013 super with 4000 miles for 7000 usd, is that a good deal or is the later years 14 and up any changes have more hp, torque, better suspension, screen, ect. Thank you for your help
A bit late on that video...but I had the opposite experience, when it comes down to the reliability of japanese bikes(~20k km per year). Literally all my japanese bikes(2x KLE500s, 1 DL650) had waaaay more serious problems than the european ones I have/had. It seems I have some sort of bad luck with them....but I still consider swapping my 1190 for a ST, as I mainly do very long trips and the 1190 clearly lacks comfort quite a bit😁 Greetings from Austria!
I do on mine! if you are over 180 pounds with gear, I recommend getting a stiffer spring for the rear though. From the factory, the S10 is sprung for like an 170 pound rider. I think you will be much happier with the bike with correct springs, especially for a lot of 2 up riding. That being said, the stock suspension is still livable
The Super Tenere is no poor mans BMW - its a bike for serious off road touring. The man that buys a Super Tenere demands reliability and traction on dirt with the 270 degree crank 1200 cc engine provides. I ride a 2020 Africa Twin adv sports and I was torn before I purchase the new bike. Yamaha is serious quality. We have proved BMW and KTM are not reliable enough to solo ride in Australia. A break down could kill you when doing desert runs. The European bikes are for armatures.
The super tenere is the true SMART mans bmw gs,,..... Because then you save stacks of cash to road-trip with instead of overpriced boutique bike shop service, accessories and repair bills. But, status symbols ain't cheap so choose wisely.
Poor mans bike?? Yamaha and BMW are the best, period. Maintenance is waaaay expensive in BMW , and you don't have any idea when that shaft gets done. In Yamaha, you don't have to worry, no issues, and this machine can take you anywhere in the world plus it came out with the best engine tech.
Great Video. I love hearing truth. I have a 13 BMW R1200GSA and you are rite bmws does have it's issues there fuel system is trash even there 2021 bike are having all kinds of recalls 👀. I say buy what you like it's slot of bikes out now that just as good as Bmws and I'm old school so all the tech is getting to be much. Have a good day
BMW GSA: "The bike that takes you to the end of the world."
SUPER TÉNÉRÉ: "The bike that takes you to the end of the world - -and BACK HOME"
🤗 Perfect!
Wrong. The buyer of the Super T will be the rich man,by saving a fortune in maintenance costs as compared to the GS.
Exactly
God damn right, it’s the sensible man’s bike, the BMW is for yuppies going to Starbucks
Hi, I will never buy another Yamaha Motorcycle simply because the one I own is perfect and I'm never selling it.
When i first read you first few words i thought i was going to hear about the first unreliable yamaha.
Much hope that it never gets totaled or stolen.
if rich men get the GS because of rich, they are missing the genius of the SuperT. Great bike!
The Yamaha Super Tenere was born in the 80's from the Paris-Dakar rally raid and has been the most reliable adventure bike since.
yes
It's not a poor man's GS... It's a wise man's discerning choice. There's only one regret I have in my Super Tenére.... That I didn't buy one sooner! 🤔
Correct
Once you understand this bike, the idea that it's dull goes out the window. It's big, but it's balanced and very stable. I considered the S10 to be the "Smart man's BMW GS". For those that realize that fancy gadgets will never replace reliability.
16 grand for a poor man's bike..wow how times have changed..😄

Super Tenere is a better motorcycle and more reliable than the over rated BMW.
Watch Fortnine’s take on it. It’s much liveable
Very honest talk and info
I love the way you tell great info like story

When i have gs in the past im going poor lol because of the maintenance of the gs. 👎👎👎
Damn, the song at 0:40. Good old tune;)
which is more reliable, anvil or xt1200z? the debate continues😉

Er, no disrespect intended... but none of my eight boxer-engined GoldWings “burn” or lose oil.
My Gen 1 ST now sits at 70 000 km - still does not use oil between 10 000 km service intervals.
It's a Honda, of course!
Would you give a talk comparing africa twin 1000 cc with the super tenere please?
One thing is buying a motor bike that you can go around the world with trust and peace of mind, other thing is riding something that you are not sure it will arrive the next corner without an issue, I could well had bought a gs but instead I rather have a peace of mind every time I go for a ride, if people wants to throw money away they should consider helping people who are starving....

Nice “review” , how comfortable is the super tenere on longer highway stints at 90mph/150km/h ? Windprotection good etc ?
I never really ride her at 90mph on the highway. Too paranoid of getting tickets. But at 75mph-80mph feels very comfortable.
Stable up to 232km/h on Michelin Anakee3
It's not poor man's, it's for the man who knows Good and Bad Motorcycle...
I prefer the tenere over the GS and I can afford both.
Motard, What Rpm are you seeing at 75-80 mph.?
About 4 500 rpm in top.
My Gen 1 shows 5 500 rpm at an indicated 155 km/h (+- 145 km/h true speed).
This is so true !!!!

That is pretty odd indeed. What issues did you have on the dl650?
@@motardsquid Steering head bearing, Speed Sensor, ABS Sensor rear, Oil consumption....and all that under 20k km on the bike...😒
Come on squid! Don’t hold back! Tell us what you really think! Seriously though, great video. Do you recommend the Yamaha for 2-up riding?
I have one, it is greatv loaded with 2 up and luggage. Makes a very smooth ride, like a big Mercedes or luxury car.

Súper tenere the best
VW cars are a pain as well
$16,299............yeah. A bike for the "poor"
It looks likes the very First edition. So you are very out of time for this review. GS Is good to take a drink outside. ST goes to the Moon and back.
It’s not BMW it’s BMtrouble you . The old 1100Gs was the best in my opinion.
Goodday to all at $ 25000 for the ES i dont tgink its a poor mans bike.
Hello
Super ten is ten times better than Gs.
