“We made money to make music. We didn’t make music to make money.” That was so insightful to me and is likely the factor of why some bands/musicians have longevity and multiple successful works and why some bands don’t. The 1975 will always be, at their core, a group of boys who loved music so much they just never stopped.
I met Matty after they played at the Soma venue in San Diego when they were still pretty small back in 2014. He was so kind and friendly and chatted with us in the parking lot after the show. Holy @#$! Cheers to the person doing the interview, so naturally invasive on a sensitive, kind, genuinely curious, level. Cheers to Matty for his authentic answers and deep thoughtful discussions. He talks of his band with such respect and comfort, loyalty, support and trust. This interview was full of mutual respect, trust , honesty and courage. I'm truly shook. I had last all hope in men until this beautiful display of kind and thoughtful discourse. Love, E
such a genuine interview, you can tell he's speaking his mind and trying to put things into words everyone can get. it all started with a love for music, and the more you learn about him as a person, the more you just feel this growing affection, alongside his music...like an exponential surge
i love how sincere he STILL is after all this time. His morals have always been the same and that is why time and time again this band has the support they do. We see it. We love it. Always have. I have grown up watching this band. And the love they have for each other has always been a constant.
I'm a 62 year old Australian bloke who heard The 1975 a few years back and didn't follow up too closely. Last Sunday , my 20 year old son told me he was heading to Sydney to see them and it kind of jolted my memory and now I'm bingeing on their albums , live videos etc and this interview confirms what I already knew. This guy (and the band) is a genius. How four kids found each other and formed this incredible thing is awesome. The melodies, arrangements, the design of the live shows are just mind-blowing. The next time they are over here I'll be there for sure.
I love how insightful all of Mattys interviews are. I wish he did more , I get why he doesn’t do them anymore but when he does it’s like that expression of looking into a window of his soul. He worries about his ranting but that’s the genuine parts of him that we as fans love. He goes on tangents about subjects because he truly cares about the topic . He’s wonderful. I’m glad it sounds like he has so much happiness in his day to day. That’s all us as fans want for him and the band. Amazing interview on both ends.
Not all swifties are hating on him. She got me here. I am staying for him. Love the 1975’s music and what they stand for. Thank you Taylor for introducing so many of us to their music.
Same, I adore him so much and think she really lost someone here. I'd too be devastated if my fans made me lose this guy. I was embarrassed to be a swiftie when they were all hating on him.
the 1975 are THE quintessential modern band and I feel so lucky to experience their art in real time. I am also jealous of future generations that will get to hear their whole catalog for the first time. Matty is the absolute best-- loved this interview
My husband and I are both illustrators, and I always love listening to Matty talk about creativity because it often transcends disciplines. Hearing a musician talking about creativity oddly helps me in my own world of art and design. He talks about a lot of things we've been talking about lately as well... and it's cool to feel like these ideas are in the zeitgeist.
Matty saying at the end "I just chatted on this whole time" dude that's all I want, I've been a fan for years and I just want to hear what you think about, I want to hear you being a human and I feel more connected when you ramble on. Love you matty
My husband and I went to see them in Belfast and he was so overwhelmed by how Matty talked about masculinity and the pressure of that and love and softness in male friend relationships. It really moved him and it moved me too. He is a fresh voice even if you don’t agree with everything he says I’m glad he’s talking about this. It’s getting men talking about their mental health for sure.
@@anonymouskrys you can dislike him but can't deny he has the ability to carry a conversation and keep it going forever just trying to make sense of things. Not a lot of people are like that
Matty Healy is truly a genious, has SO many things to say but still remains so humble in a way and authentic. He is so inspiring to me, as an artist but mostly as a human being. The interviewer did an incredible job, loved his questions and the pace of this convo!
I love when he talks about the duality of him on and off stage. On stage and sometimes in interviews he gets into character but I think in real life it's just like he said: soft and quiet. I wish many more people would look at things beyond the surface before jumping to conclusions.
One of my favorite interviews with Matty. I love how Tom asks for clarification rather than nod along to whatever Matty says. 😊 The question at the end gave Matty a chance to beautifully describe his friendship with his band mates.
I totally get it….as someone who knew nothing about him or the band, I realize just how dumb people are. He isn’t any of the things the media (swiftie generated) portray. Glad I did my own investigation! Love him.
Wish more people did that coz they probably still be together, maybe. He is beyond awesome, please watch more stuff about him, you will go down the rabbit hole so hard
I so enjoyed listening to Matty's sincerity here. So refreshing to listen to a young pop star be so open about his real feelings and thoughts, not trying to win popularity, or shy to speak his passion for music, especially when he brings up when something bigger than the artist takes over and a song transcends the listener to feel something they needed brought out. So free and articulate. He gives his points of view openly, one can disagree, which makes opportunity for good discussion.
Yes, not to be rude, BUT I always though she had horrible taste in men. All of these little douches 😂. He seems multifaceted and more complex that her others 🤔. He most likely can match her intelligence not saying someone like Tom hiddleston or Joe alwyn couldn't they were both very cultured as well.
Then clickbait media and unresearched media ruined it for them.. He has also been so great to the girls he dated, he would have treated her like a queen.
31:27 i totally agree with you here, if i was asked to choose like what my favourite album was by the 1975 it’s so difficult because they’ve been consistently incredible. different and new each time but consistently incredible
Can we just appreciate the interviewer, he is on point. This is an honest journal of where matty is at with honest and invested questions. Hats off to you!
Love Matty’s eloquence, vocabulary and gift to keep you interested. Never been a humongous fan of The 1975’s work, I’ve always loved a few gems on every album but man he knows how to talk.
I’m almost 50. Had a lot of “favorite” bands. This (and DMB) are my favorite bands. This interview is one of my favorites. Tom is incredible and Matty is just Matty, as always. Using one of his favorite words: juxtaposing today’s Matty with 2014 Matty in an interview are so different but beautifully the same. I couldn’t love this more.
seriously GREAT interview! i love how both Matty and the interviewer were both so vulnerable with each other! To be able to say "now slow down I don't understand when you said that" is so beneficial for not just clarity, but for a deeper seeking of understanding and sharing of knowledge and experience! Love love love!!!!!
dying that Matty always refers to the "kids" and the "17 year olds" when i'm a fully grown 35 year old woman and i'm sure i'm not alone in this lol. This was such a great interview!

thank you so much for this, this is such a great interview! matty’s so well spoken I could literally listen to him talk all day… I wish others who make judgements on his character from a 15 second tiktok video or a tweet would take a second to actually listen to what he has to say and the connection he feels towards the guys and his fans is so tangible and beautiful❤️
It's so amazing and satisfying to feel an affection for a person when they were younger and finding out later they have developed into the truly fabulous person their early potential hunted at. Thank you for conducting the interview that allowed Matty to show that.
What a lovely chat you guys had. So laid back and chill, just bouncing thoughts off each other while going a little deeper into what makes Matty tick. I adore this man and the boys, I already know I’ll be an old man with joint pain one day and still vibe to their songs religiously, feeling thankful that they existed at the same moment in time as me.
Thank you for this. This is probably the top 2 interviews I’ve ever seen with Matty. I loved that when you didn’t understand what he meant, you would actually pause and ask him. ❤
Actually I want to elaborate. I also really respect that you let him speak. You didn’t cut him off to get out what you wanted to ask. You let his thoughts and statements be the star. And you guys discussed some really interesting stuff. This was actually my favorite interview of Matty ever.
It’s crazy how Matty said, “We’ve become defined by what we don’t like…we used to be defined by what we loved,” and on the last track of Taylor Swift’s album Lover, she says, “I want to be defined by the things I love…” 🤯
I truly love listening to how their music has evolved & how they create. I love listening to Matty - too bad people outside of most 75 fans never see this side of the band/Matty outside of little viral soundbites.
This entire comment section is beyond wholesome and beautiful. Me just liking and nodding along to what everyone else has said. Literally taken the words from my brain.
hands down one of my favourite matty interviews. sincerity was a big chunk of their conversation and it showed both ways. Tom ( i hope im getting the name right) going “what?” when matty stopped halfway through finishing his thought won me over so so quick. need more of these.
I just feel like Matty is the heart of the whole universe. It’s a pleasure to experience watching and observing the 1975 transforming the whole music industry. Love him and him with the band as a whole family 💕
I have NOT heard the term "mardy", in that quaint 90's British slang/ colloquial way for such a long time almost 2 decades. That made me smile. I can definitely see his appeal now.
Brilliant interview. What an amazing human being he is. Their shows are like nothing else I’ve seen before. It’s so refreshing to see someone care about music as much as he does.
God, what a fucking incredible interview. Literally sobbing at the discussion of music being the closest thing to have to religion. Music is the only thing that makes me feel remotely "spiritual" and literally transcend. What a respectful conversation between two genuinely intelligent people, thank you so much for this
I went to that Toronto show, incredible show as they always do! First show was 2016! He says some dramatic things but these guys are truly so special. 9 years later and I’m still supporting them. Even have my [ ] tattoo.
Matty is very articulate and speaks so eloquently. It's difficult to make sense of it all since his vocabulary is really something but it's engrossing, inspiring and very attractive. He's self-aware enough to say 'I sound pretentious', for those who may misunderstand his intent, but I personally don't see any pretentiousness. He's fuelled by passion and it's rare to see. He is even more attractive to me after listening to this.
as a fan I truly feel like the 1975’s music is unearthed. i get what hes saying, and he will never get that element of what we view their music as (because he’s the creator and not simply a fan)- how powerful and sentimental their music and art became and what it emotionally holds over millions of fans across the world and the mark it has in our lives. He knows we soundtracked (and soundtrack) our lives to it…as he said before. it is just incredibly unbelievable that its all real. he should be so proud! incredible interview.
Coming late to the party of these guys! I’m 50 music is my lifeblood,I like all kinds of music but the se guys are killer! Catchy deliberate tunes, they’ll be around a long time! Glad I found them!
this is the type of guy I fell hard for in the 80s, skinny poetic romantic stylish ,, talented musicians with working class English accents - Matty you make me wish I was 35 years younger again.
It's like the band didn't even think about what this album should be, which feels like such a breath of fresh air from their previous records. This album is earnest and sincere. Fair play to the lads.
I love this man so much. I love the1975. Ever since I heard chocolate in 2013 I completely fell in love with their music. Their art just resonates with me and puts me in all sorts of moods. I just love it!! I whitnessed their artistic evolution and its just brilliant!! I can’t wait to see where the roads will lead the1975 in the future. So excited to see and hear more from them.
Remarkable interview of an artist unknown to me. Quite liked his openness and honesty. Lives from the heart. Put some albums in my streaming library for a listen. 🙏🏼
This is my favorite comment! After you give the music a listen (definitely after, for context....lol!) you can watch full live performance from the O2 from 2019 on their UA-cam. then their full current show is on Amazon Prime (you can also find it on UA-cam if you need. It's their MSG show). They are a truly phenomenal band doing their best work to date, but their entire catalog is wonderful.
I don’t either dislikes the other. that was much more of a fling than a relationship imo. I couldn’t ever take a Healy-Swift relationship seriously lol

Matty has an excellent brain...this is not an interview, it's a revelation. Thanks Tom!
They only judge matty like a book cover but they never read him. Hes very deep musician hes brilliañt whenever he sharing his thoughts
Thank you Taylor for introducing so many of us to their music.
me too
Me too, ttpd introduced me to Matty and the 1975 and I love them ❤
me too x
Dear god, I have been crushing on this man watching interviews from 2013 to now. I can also see how he's messy.
Same, I adore him so much and think she really lost someone here. I'd too be devastated if my fans made me lose this guy. I was embarrassed to be a swiftie when they were all hating on him.
Brilliant interview, somehow hearing Matty’s earnest thoughts about life and the band will never get old. Such a well spoken guy.
i could listen to him talk for ages. his sincerity and loveliness translates across the screen
the 1975 are THE quintessential modern band and I feel so lucky to experience their art in real time. I am also jealous of future generations that will get to hear their whole catalog for the first time. Matty is the absolute best-- loved this interview
Can we make this viral and show em how brilliant is this man!
It’s getting men talking about their mental health for sure.
he is so eloquent its insane, i love the way his mind works
Can you point out a way he is? I do no see it whatsoever
He’s British that’s why
@@anonymouskrys you can dislike him but can't deny he has the ability to carry a conversation and keep it going forever just trying to make sense of things. Not a lot of people are like that
i could just spend my whole life listening to him talking
Matty Healy is truly a genious, has SO many things to say but still remains so humble in a way and authentic. He is so inspiring to me, as an artist but mostly as a human being. The interviewer did an incredible job, loved his questions and the pace of this convo!
I love when he talks about the duality of him on and off stage. On stage and sometimes in interviews he gets into character but I think in real life it's just like he said: soft and quiet. I wish many more people would look at things beyond the surface before jumping to conclusions.
I love him for being soft and quiet. Wish I could have a conversation like this one with him.
One of my favorite interviews with Matty. I love how Tom asks for clarification rather than nod along to whatever Matty says. 😊 The question at the end gave Matty a chance to beautifully describe his friendship with his band mates.
O my word. After watching this interview I can so see why Taylor would fall for him. He is amazing.
He’s intelligent and unflinchingly honest. She just might finally be looking for someone who challenges her. That could be a good thing.
Exactly! I wish more people could see that too 😢
he seems like the intelligent artsy dad that would parent kids with taylor
@@JasmineBellaI hope they take after her looks. He isn’t a good looking dude
@@BreakerOfChains219 well they'll definitely be tall lol.
This is his best, most approachable interview ever
I love this interview so much. This man's brain is a true treasure.
Forever my favorite band
I totally get it….as someone who knew nothing about him or the band, I realize just how dumb people are. He isn’t any of the things the media (swiftie generated) portray. Glad I did my own investigation! Love him.
Wish more people did that coz they probably still be together, maybe. He is beyond awesome, please watch more stuff about him, you will go down the rabbit hole so hard
What about what he did in Malaysia ? Guess he didn’t give a f about his Malaysian fans and their money. He’s self absorbed and disrespectful.
Yes I too did my own research and just wow I am so sad that I didn't know of them from the beginning of their career!
Finally “TS” hit the jackpot… brilliant man
Yes, not to be rude, BUT I always though she had horrible taste in men.
He has also been so great to the girls he dated, he would have treated her like a queen.
about that
31:27 i totally agree with you here, if i was asked to choose like what my favourite album was by the 1975 it’s so difficult because they’ve been consistently incredible. different and new each time but consistently incredible
Can we just appreciate the interviewer, he is on point. This is an honest journal of where matty is at with honest and invested questions. Hats off to you!
This is genuinely a fantastic interview. Matty Healy is a really insightful guy and this interviewer is excellent.
I couldn’t love this more.
i like the interveiwer , i can tell hes quite fond of matty like he respects him and theyre having a nice in depth chat
seriously GREAT interview! i love how both Matty and the interviewer were both so vulnerable with each other! To be able to say "now slow down I don't understand when you said that" is so beneficial for not just clarity, but for a deeper seeking of understanding and sharing of knowledge and experience! Love love love!!!!!
Back here on 27.08.2024 and what do you know, Oasis are touring! Thanks Matty!
Love The 1975, glad he is not single anymore. Matty is a sweetheart. Only human...
dying that Matty always refers to the "kids" and the "17 year olds" when i'm a fully grown 35 year old woman and i'm sure i'm not alone in this lol. This was such a great interview!
56 here 😉
46 here along with my 16 almost 17 yr old who also loves them. I started out listening to them and my son grew up hearing them bc of that and now they’re his favorite band.
I’m 47… I first took my 14year old daughter 10 yrs ago to see them, and I’ve seen them 6 more times since , she’s 23 now and still we see them together! I love everything about them !
Love that Samm!! We went to see them for the first time in November and can’t wait to see them again! I can’t stop listening to them.
❤
Phenomenal interview. One of the best interviews I’ve ever seen, very heartfelt
I think this is my new favourite Matty interview, perfection.
Matty on a bad day is as honest and sincere as interview I have seen by any artist to date, and it's with no small help from you. Great. Stay safe J
Looked up an interview with Matty and Tom JUST yesterday and now it’s here. Manifested it. Big fan of the albums been a fan since 2013 or something haha🫶🏽🖤
thank you so much for this, this is such a great interview! matty’s so well spoken I could literally listen to him talk all day… I wish others who make judgements on his character from a 15 second tiktok video or a tweet would take a second to actually listen to what he has to say and the connection he feels towards the guys and his fans is so tangible and beautiful❤️
It's so amazing and satisfying to feel an affection for a person when they were younger and finding out later they have developed into the truly fabulous person their early potential hunted at. Thank you for conducting the interview that allowed Matty to show that.
dear god 12:26 he said what Taylor wrote in “Daylight” I want to be defined by the things that I love
there's so many parallels between him and Taylor I'm losing my mind
@@jeniferferris33 I completely agree with you here, I really liked this point as well
It’s crazy how Matty said, “We’ve become defined by what we don’t like…we used to be defined by what we loved,” and on the last track of Taylor Swift’s album Lover, she says, “I want to be defined by the things I love…” 🤯
Whoa. Time stamp please!!
We were telling you this😭😭
This aged...in a way :)))
This was just a straight up wonderful conversation to watch.
Never heard of this Healy until Taylor. He seems interesting . I like the music
I truly love listening to how their music has evolved & how they create. I love listening to Matty - too bad people outside of most 75 fans never see this side of the band/Matty outside of little viral soundbites.
Matty is lucky to have cohesive relationships with his bandmates. His intelligence & realness shines through in the interview.
This entire comment section is beyond wholesome and beautiful. Me just liking and nodding along to what everyone else has said. Literally taken the words from my brain.
So glad to see that after all the craziness on TikTok and Instagram. Just fans leaving wholesome and honest feedback :)
Matty going off on Liam and Noel was so refreshing. Anyone who's ever been an oasis fan has thought the exact same thing
I've listened to this interview three times. It's so good. Thank you to everyone involved
hands down one of my favourite matty interviews. sincerity was a big chunk of their conversation and it showed both ways.
Northern word
Brilliant interview. What an amazing human being he is. Their shows are like nothing else I’ve seen before. It’s so refreshing to see someone care about music as much as he does.
God, what a fucking incredible interview. Literally sobbing at the discussion of music being the closest thing to have to religion. Music is the only thing that makes me feel remotely "spiritual" and literally transcend. What a respectful conversation between two genuinely intelligent people, thank you so much for this
I just love how as a famous artist Matty still understands and relates to being a huge fan of someone.
This man never disappoints, amazing band and incredible frontman❤
it’s so refreshing to see tom genuinely interested in what matty is saying.
I could hear him talk for literally years
omg this is exactly what im thinking while watching 😝
Coming late to the party of these guys! I’m 50 music is my lifeblood,I like all kinds of music but the se guys are killer! Catchy deliberate tunes, they’ll be around a long time! Glad I found them!
I could listen to him talk forever he’s so intelligent and pure ugh
this is the type of guy I fell hard for in the 80s, skinny poetic romantic stylish ,, talented musicians with working class English accents - Matty you make me wish I was 35 years younger again.
Me too! 😀
😂 girl , I feel the same way too!
I subscribed because this guy knows how to ask questions to keep everything moving forward. What an interviewer
What a real, honest conversation. I loved everything about this including the oasis psa.
It's like the band didn't even think about what this album should be, which feels like such a breath of fresh air from their previous records. This album is earnest and sincere. Fair play to the lads.
This was gold. A dream interview for any music lover.
What I would do to listen to the 1975 for the first time again. Enjoy!
You won't regret it, it's life changing. The 1975 are best band since the Beatles.
@@robertakerr9399 so true! Thoroughly enjoying their music. 🙏🏼
@@Sprack07 so many great tunes! Lov’m them!!
Thanks Taylor! I now have a new favorite band. Love you too tho girl
I don’t either dislikes the other. that was much more of a fling than a relationship imo. I couldn’t ever take a Healy-Swift relationship seriously lol
really nice podcast, lovely to hear from Matty. Such a thoughtful man. I saw them in Liverpool last week. He must be tired out from all the touring, you can see it. But still gives a lovely interview.
I’ve been a fan from the start & always loved the way Matty’s mind works. Can’t wait to see them for the 4th time in October!!
38:32 i left finsbury park with that exact thought and have since picked up my guitar again
