Corpse Bride is based on an old story that is much much darker than the Tim Burton movie makes it out to be. As I go over this old folktale, you'll certainly see just how much of it 'inspired' the Corpse Bride animated film... which is more light-hearted if you can believe it! I do know there's another story called the Demon in the Tree, that I believed was also a part of the inspiration. I think the the boy proposing to a supernatural entity is still the same, and the corpse did get to be with the couple in a throuple situation, or as they put it 'share' the husband. It's an odd one to say, but the ending sounds a bit nicer
I know that when Jon Solo talked about Corpse Bride, he talked about that story as well as the Jewish folktale.
I remember that one! It, along with "the finger" is collected in Howard Schwartz's collection of jewish magic tales "Lilith's cave". There are a bunch more jewish tales that are concerned with the (involuntary) marriage between a human (both man or woman) and a person of the Other World (usually a demon), like the "tale of the jerusalemite", which appears in the collection as "the kiss of death"

There's another version of this story; the living bride, feeling pity for the weeping corpse, gathers her up, and promises to live a happy life, have enough children for both of them, and swearing she -the corpse bride- will be remembered.
That's the version I remember.
I had a feeling the origins would be very dark. A money-hungry serial killer seems oddly specific and convenient.
In hebrew tradition the couple would be betrothed and then the prospective groom would take a year or so while adding an addition to his father's house where the couple would eventually reside. It would not be finished until the father of the groom says it was done- so the groom knew not the day nor the hour when he could go and get his bride.
In the meantime the bride would be at her parent's home getting her things ready to bring to her new home, not knowing when her groom would come and whisk her away.
Usually it was in the middle of the night and the only warning would be a shout from a family member. Then a procession of unmarried ladies would escourt groom and bride together to where there would be feasting and a celebrarion of their union.
It's my favorite wedding custom. It's so romantic!❤

I remember another similar -- but more positive -- tale from "My Grandmother's Stories" by Adela Geras. Yes, this is of Eastern European Jewish heritage. The book it is included in is entitled, "The Ghost Bride," which I thought for a moment was the one you might reference. The subject was an unhappy "spirit" who appeared before weddings were about to take place and caused brides to go into hysterics. Since the book is out of print (although still available at some libraries and second-hand booksellers), I will give a "spoiling" synopsis. One calm, rational bride-to-be speaks to the ghost and finds that she died before her "hour of joy." The bride-to-be is sympathetic and offers to allow her to stand with her under the chuppah if she will "cease and desist" from frightening any future brides. This, the ghost-bride is amenable to. She stands with the bride during the ceremony and goes her way. (She might "hang around" during the reception afterwards.) At the end of the tale, the reader is cautioned that he or she might catch a glimpse of a young woman in antique wedding attire at future wedding festivities but not to be alarmed, just to act as if she is a "normal"' guest and mind your own business!

This was interesting hearing the original story. I didn't know there was an old version of Corpse Bride. I had always wondered if Corpse Bride took inspiration from this movie from 1988 called Goddess of Love. There are so many similarities between the two. They both have the same basic premise, but replace corpse with goddess who has been turned to stone by the gods.
This is one of my favorite movies I think it is underrated people don't talk about it much.

Not long after the living bride shira made a promise to the corpse bride and the tale said the corpse bride parents were summons to reburied their dead daughter and maybe the parents of the bride and groom and the Ravi should've ask how their daughters died which cause a lot of troubles

In most Progoms the Beautiful women were keeped alive and forced into martiages.
So the original Bride wasnt only killed in an ethnic cleansing event mistlikly ending her family line but also was deemt to ugly.
And yes you can argue wich fate was worse. I am shure the victims of both will tell you theres were worse.
But assuming you belive in an afterlive beeing killed is worse because you will lament all the things you missed out for a while.
If you dont the killing is the better fate because your suffering will be over. Even if i doubt that the women who were keeped alive lifed truthly Happy most very likly did live Happy in the end.

Honestly, all the parts that Burton took out were my favorite parts of the story. Because, Hand to G-d, Jews don't get a lot of representation in Folklore or The Horror Genre overall, even though we were making anti-Lilith Incantation Bowls to ward her blood sucking Tuchis away from our kids' cribs, and crafting Golems to protect our communities with horrific consequences, centuries before Bram Stoker could take a drink or Mary Shelley could hold a fountain pen. It actually broke my heart because I realized how much of My People's Culture had been whitewashed and taken away from us, just so people like Tim Burton and the Executives at Hot Topic could make money off it, by achieving what the Pogromists set out to do in the first place. Erase us. I still can't bring myself to watch any of Burton's movies anymore, despite being a fan for many years. It hurts too much now that I know the truth.

This was the Folklore and culture my nerdy, goth, Jewish heart yearned for in Jr. High and High School, but got the answer that "Jews don't Believe in those things." FEH! of course we do! And it shouldn't take our kids till College to find out about it, if they take a niche class about it.
IY"H, Ari Aster and A24 will do a live action adaptation of "The Finger," that will do the original story justice in all it's glory.
Just FYI, this story doesn't take place in Europe and neither did all Pogroms, although the term does usually refer to Anti-Jewish Ethnic Cleansing by Cossacks and other Eastern Europeans under The Former Russian Empire. This tale is actual set in 17th Century Tzfat/Safed, one of The Holy Cities of Judaism, Birthplace and Epicenter of The Kabbalah. The Rabbi in the story is none other than "The Ari" Rabbi Isaac Luria. Progenitor of Lurianic Kabbalah. You've never seen moonlight in the mountain forests like the one outside Tzfat. Its unsettling and entrancing at the same time. During this time, it wasn't just Czarists who wanted to eliminate the "hour of Joy" of every Jewish woman to prevent future generations from being born. In this region, Arab on Jewish violence was much more prevalent. One of the most infamous instances of Anti-Jewish Violence in The Holy Land, the 1517 Safed Pogrom, had just happened less than 100 years before the first documented publication of the story. More than 400 years before the signing of The Balfour Declaration. In fact, The Koran itself sings the praises of Mohammed ordering his followers to carry out a Pogrom against The Jews of Khaybar after they refused to give him all their worldly possessions to fund his military campaigns, or convert to Islam, all the way back in The 7th Century C.E. Much like their Eastern European Counterparts, Theological hostility and scapegoating of Jews by larger groups of people in the region, who belonged to the largest religions in them was almost identical, words quickly escalating to violent action. With an equivalent desire to add insult to injury by desecrating the bodies of Jewish Brides, often still in their gowns, by leaving them in open, shallow graves.
Bottom Line: Representation matters. I'm gonna go out of my way to make sure my kids have plenty of Kosher Horror Stories to tell around the campfire, including this one. But, it is partially borne from the pain of having to reclaim my own stories back, even and especially when they so heavily reference our history and culture.

''Hour of joy''? Pfffffft! And people say old fairy tales are dark and grim. That's downright optimistic.
In old French cultures, if a couple is separated by death, they may still technically marry, despite the death. So in a sense, you could still marry a corpse at one point in history.
There are various jewish folk tales about marriages between humans and people of the Other World, though usually the supernatural spouse is some sort of demon. This one is one of my favourite versions however, as it tangles real, lived tragedies into its melancholic plot.
Not what i expected to see in my recommended but not disappointed happy to be here
It would be cool to see a video about the similarities between the original Pinnochio and the game Lies of P, which (somewhat) follows that version of the story
