No bride is safe. The amount of death in this sick (and dirty) tale is DOUBLE that of the infamously murderous Bluebeard, and it keeps on happening in the strangest way. It will make you question whether “happily ever after” is really what the characters deserve, or if they actually deserve to be haunted forevermore. This old, but newly rediscovered fairy tale is dark, full of death and dirty dirty deeds, with many many enchanting beings. There’s more missing women than in Bluebeard’s murder lab, for sure. So, follow me if you dare into this slippery, saucy, and disturbing tale.

@abitfrank I don't mean to bother, but I just like to thank you for introducing me to Giambattista Basile, the Grimm Brothers are usually the reference for fairy tales because they are more widely known but I got to tell you I'm really enjoying the stories of the OG Basile, I even had watched Tale of Tales and had no idea that the movie was inspired by his compilation. @abitfrank, I love the way you used the design of Victor Van Dort as the knight’s son in this video. This is why earlier this morning I want there to be a video about your take on the stories that influenced Tim Burton to make “Corpse Bride”. The Knight's son looks sort of like Victor Van Dort; Whether if that was intentional or not, I find it funny that the character is an ironic and coincidental counterpart to the timid and nervous Tim Burton character, and yet either man-boy are not as innocent in love standards as they have themselves to believe even if both their situations were accidental circumstances.🙃 LOL.

Fun fact: "Wealthy Widow" was one of the single worst demographics to be a part of in the middle ages. Because greedy or horny noble men didn't need permission from anyone to marry a widdow, not even her's, and once married all of her property became his even if she had a son already. There's stories of literal medieval mad-max style races to be the first knight to drag widows kicking and screaming to the nearest bribed priest.

I was hoping the ghosts of the brides to haunt the mother for not caring about their situation. And yes, those mermaids had it coming, they were the ones making the killing. Usually when it comes to the Supernatural and Humans copulating we get Changelings, which are Faerie Children.
Most Likely The Mermaids would've given birth, unless they were infertile.

Sounds like the mother was the one getting rid of the previous brides bodies since the son wasn't in his right mind to even question the fact he had a new bride every time or about their whereabouts, the mermaids must've had a sirenlike hold on him since he didn't even bother asking why his lover was changing every time during those 12 years.
The mother probably believed her son was the one killing each bride since in her eyes he didn't like them, and her obsession with wanting grandkids pushed her to keep sending for new brides until her son finally found one he liked, so the mother was sending each bride to their death with the small possibility one would be chosen by her son, but the last bride was the one break this cycle in the end... She should still be wary of her new mother-in-law though.

This could actually work as a prequel to [a version] of the "Twelve Dancing Princesses." Though they wouldn't technically be princesses since their father wouldn't be a king...unless they make the lake island their own micro-kingdom?
Still, the nature of the 12 daughters could work as _either_ each one is the daughter of one of the twelve mermaids, _or_ all twelve belong to the new bride, with 11 being the reincarnated previous brides that were killed and one that is entirely the new bride's, maybe the youngest. OR do a mixture-11 mermaid daughters, the 12th daughter is from the new human bride, and perhaps the 12th mermaid that was supposed to take the new bride's place is the one that sets them all off on the nights of dancing because she's bitter she didn't get her turn.

I found this story on Zeno, among Schönwerths „Tales from the Upper Palatinate“ (Sagen aus der Oberpfalz), in the tenth book, on water and waterspirits.
In the introduction to this chapter, Schönwerth explains the difference between fish- or snake-tailed mermaids (which are locally known as Mirfral), who eat people and are thought to come from italian influence, and waterwomen or nixies (Wasserfral), who have a fully human body, and are more similar to elves or fairies. In the tale of the twelve brides, the creatures in the lake are called waterwomen.
In most parts of Germany actually there are slightly more legends on the human-like waterwomen and nixies than the fish-tailed mermaids

I wonder which Corpse Bride tale was the movie based on? I know it might sound like a dumb question since there was nothing in the movie's credits to suggest whether it was based on any story at all, but I am curious to the point of this video in all aspects of the suggestion.

Theres a german Fairytale called "Fanferlieschen Schönefüsschem"
    (fanverlieschen prettyfeet) from Clemens Brentano.
that is about a good king that dies leaving his evil son Jerume to Rule the kingdom Besserdich, and his archenemy is called Fanferlieschen- she is a old witch that used to be very beautiful. So Jerume does different bad things but one time he takes a grouo of kids and says to his guard (i thinj it was a guard) to poison the kids, but someone added cinnamon and then it only turned the kids into Animals, and Fanferlieschen takes the kids in and raises them.
One is called Princess goat "prinzessin Ziege-sa"
And the evil Jerume shoots into the ear of princess Goat-sa
And later Jerume has to take a wife, so he takes 7 Wives but allways kills them in the night.
And Fanverlieschen steals Jerumes crown- then he is no longer king. She wants to find him a bride that is so good that he will become a better person.
    kindhearted Ursula then marries Jerume.
In the weddingnight she sees the ghosts of the dead brides.
Then Jerume has like 50 knifes and wants to kill Ursula to (because he has a wooden item that tells him stuff after he gave it blood/murdered someone. He allways talks bout a kid called ursulus that will defeat Jerume, and that if he kills Ursula and Ursulus then the immortal Fanverlieschen will die so he can defeat her and get his crown back. But that item only speaks weird so Jerume does not understand and repeats the murders.)
Then there is a bird, a bird that eats other birds, Ursula once saved him from a predator by killing it, and the bird then stops eating other birds.
The bird remembers Ursula and helps her by stealing the knifes and letting them drop on Jerume.
Everyone unconscious... then Jerumes people find him and his bride, they lock up Ursula in a tower because they think she wanted to kill him (they saw 50 knifes... a wounded Jerume... yeah... but it was not her)
For years she is in that tower and the birds bring her food and water to survive.
Ursula gives birth to a baby boy (she wishes for a baby)
and when the boy called Ursulus (Ursulas mom was called Ursa and her das Ursus... she names her baby after them btw) is 10 years old she lets him go.
Ursulus goes to find Jerume and works as a chef, but I forgot the rest.

I want to say the names in this fairytale are very funny:
Kingdom Scandalia, the village is betteryourself
      Main Character Fanferlieschen:
Lischen is a nickname of Lisa or Elisabeth, and Verlies means
dungeon (but more in a prison in a castle way)
