Xiaolin Showdown's TERRIBLE Sequel: Xiaolin Chronicles

  • Xiaolin Showdown was one of the first cartoons I ever watched that had a progressing story to it. I instantly feel in love wanting to watch every episode when it came out. It was sad having the show end the way it did so when I learned it was going to get a sequel series called Xiaolin Chronicles, I was very excited. Unfortunately that excitement turned to disappointment...

    Made a slight oversight in this video by not knowing Wood is an element in Chinese culture, thus making Ping Pong's element a valid one to use. My apologies for the hiccup ;-;

      Still, I agree that both the element and character slot should have gone to a more developed character from the original show.

      It’s not a hiccup at all! Most people who aren’t weird culture trivia nerds usually have zero clue about it. Especially in the cartoon community where the big elemental magic juggernaut ATLA exists.

    • @KakoriGames
      @KakoriGames 3 роки тому +54

      The thing is, the show never used the Chinese elements to begin with. There's no Air/Wind in the Chinese elements, instead there's metal.

    • @zeevnation6558
      @zeevnation6558 3 роки тому +23

      The five elements comes a lot from southern China, especially in Hung-gar where they are paired with an animal and an organ.
      Tiger = Heart and Fire
      Snake= Stomach and Earth
      Dragon= Kidneys and Water
      Crane= Lungs and Metal/Air (I believe the confusion comes with a similarity between the words gold and air when being translated)
      Leopard= Liver and Wood
      In the 108 which is a form that includes all these animals (plus iron body and poison hand) the order of the animals in the form can vary on which elemental cycle you are embodying.

    If you think this show couldn't be THAT bad, then you're sorely mistaken. In this show, there's a shen gon wu that enhances your farts, and Chase Young is seen using it. Chase Young, probably THE most nuanced character in the original series, most serious villain in the show, who makes a point to only rely on his own power, uses a fart shen gon wu on his enemies, which Omi either wins or Chase gives it to him, then he proceeds to use it as well. This is the reality this show lives in. Not to mention they've made Dojo's shen gon wu rashes UNNECESSARILY disgusting. I've seen less disgusting cysts in my med vet classes

The wannabe Omi pissed me off, and wood seemed so stupid after they spent the entire first show talking about only four elements. Hell, I would've preferred it if some character that wasn't an Omi ripoff turned out to be the "Avatar" of the series, master of all four elements. But to throw in a fifth element out of nowhere and make this annoying, mini-Omi the main focus? To be honest the original series isnt as good as you remember, it had an insane amount of sci fi elements and eastern elements and is a really good series for children or people that havent seen many movies or Tv. But if you go back you will notice how truelly boring it is. If you compare to other all time great movies, series it doesnt even come close. It is actually weird that children that watched it in the mid 2000 wanted a continuation because the series had an ending that fitted it.
      Growing up it makes absolutely no sense to have a follow up series, with the same maturity because all these people allready are grown men and women and etc.
      This is the change of mind that happens to people once they grow up, experience more things, learn more stuff and see how the supposed depth is just fiction or just not there.
      Further, the human mind bores it itself fast.

In Chronicles, he breaks out in spurting blisters, at some point even popping them and causing puss to go all over the place. In the original show, we saw three separate timelines. One where Kimiko took the lead, one where Clay was the de-facto leader, and then we ended on Raymundo becoming the leader of the group.
    Chronicles isn't a continuation, its a completely different timeline where Omi has taken the leadership role.

      Time After Time part 1
      Omi freezes himself, essentially removing himself from the timeline and forcing the other monks to fight the forces of evil without him long into their elder years. Kimiko is the leader in this 'Old Timeline' in which Omi uses a shengong wu to go back in time, overshoots and accidentallies the past.
      This creates the 'Farmer Monks Timeline', where the other element monks are essentially farmer slaves. In this timeline, Clay takes the lead.
      Then Omi unites with the farmer monks and manages to recombine the timelines back into the original timeline by touching his frozen past self, collapsing the timelines into a paradox that resolves itself. The original timeline restored with all of their memories jammed into their original bodies, Raimundo becomes the leader in the last minute of screentime of the series.
      I can't remember where the split is, but this happens over the course of two episodes. Time After Time part 1 and Time After Time part 2.

      It should be noted that oftentimes, a board of writers exists to help the creator not go overboard with his/her ideas, reeling back dumb ones and keeping in check the good ones. The prime examples of a creator having too much freedom for their own good are the later Rugrats reasons, Star Wars prequel movies, Legend of Korra post-volume-one coming off Avatar the Last Airbender, and post-main-series Harry Potter. Everyone, no matter how good of a writer, messes up and thus needs people with good criticism ready to reel those screwups back.

The Star Wars prequels on paper is a fantastic story, but on screen it ended up being weirdly clunky, awkward, and silly in unintentional ways (i bet George Lucas never intended for Palpatine's entire script to be a meme gold mine). A board of writers helps to cut away the unnecessary, weird, and unfitting parts of the presentation to focus on the best stuff. Taken from a 2015 news letter from the creator herself:
      Dear Xiaolin Dragonites,
      As you know XC premiered on Netflix July 1st! And thanks to all of your support, XC ranks amongst the TOP kids’ shows on Netflix!
      What thrilling news for all of us-particularly if you knew the road we took to get here. I was also told that there is potential for Xiaolin to be a Netflix Original, if our viewing performance keeps growing stronger! This is a watershed moment, as our three years of hard work finally materialized in such a way that I would’ve never imagined. So I’d like to take this moment to reflect on our XC journey, and share with you what’s to come. And along the way, I will address some of your comments and questions.
      I received many fan emails expressing how Xiaolin Showdown inspired and influenced some of you during your childhood. And how you love that Xiaolin has returned! I am touched by your support and love for XS and XC! However, some of you also complained about certain parts of XC. It’s not Xiaolin Showdown. There were many WHYs: “Why is Dojo yellow?”; “Why do the SGW have new names?”; “Why do some characters act a certain way?”, etc.
      For starters, XS was produced by WB in the U.S. by an English speaking crew. XC was produced as an international independent show by a non-English speaking crew. Having lived through this international coproduction experience, I realized that one simply cannot, and should not, compare an major U.S. studio production with an international independent production. It’s like comparing two siblings who are separated at birth and raised in two different countries and asking why one turned out to be taller/ smarter / darker than the other, even though they share the same heritage. Let me paint an overall picture for you of the XC production-
      THE XC EXPERIENCE
      FLASHBACK: WB bought Xiaolin Showdown back in 2002. Despite its success, WB decided not to produce any more shows after the first 52 episodes. XS was done and locked up. But I felt there were many stories left untold, and more importantly, fans wanted more! So after some hard work and a very long wait, I was lucky enough to get the rights reverted back. This, however, came with certain creative constraints. Nonetheless, I was simply so overjoyed by the idea of bringing back the show that these constraints didn’t faze me. We are creative and we’ll find a way. There’s always workarounds-a manifestation of the eternally positive soul that I am. Consequently, many of your WHYs were due to this reason: Dojo turned yellow; some old SGW had new names, etc.
      Once outside the US major studio system, international co-pro is the way to go as it offers more opportunity. France and Canada provide robust subsidy programs for animation, and we were able to strike a deal with a French studio to finance the production. This meant that we had to operate within certain rules, regulations, and quotas to make the show. Nevertheless I was Excited! Let’s press the metal to the pedal! (Omism). However, I soon discovered that things worked very differently in an international co-production. In short, we have different languages, different processes and procedures, and a different management philosophy all together! We learned a lot from each other, but we also had our fair share of challenges.
      The language gap made things more difficult than I could ever imagine. Turned out the different cultures and languages impacted us on a much deeper level-our sense and sensibility. This gave rise to differences in the way we interpret and tell stories, what we considered funny, different character reactions and expressions, pacing, timing, different nuances, etc. On XC, each English script had to be translated into French first, and this French version of the script filtered down to each layer of production such as design, storyboard, etc. Remember the movie “Lost in Translation”? Truly. You get the picture.
      Despite all the challenges, the XC team pulled together and powered through it all. We drew strength from our Xiaolin characters. Remember Omi’s line in E3 “Not on my watch!” as Chase destroys the temple? We used this line to motivate each other when things got tough. I remember repeating the mantra “YES WE CAN” to myself every morning before getting out of bed. This became Jack’s running gag as he holds up a CAN with an EYE symbol to motivate his cohorts to do his evil bidding in E3. Well, there’s a reason we work in cartoons, folks! Positive thinking gets you far!
      She goes on to talk about things fans can do to help them get a Netflix original series, and getting fans to petition for the original to be put on Netflix so they can show WB there’s interest in the show. Asking if fans would support a kickstarter, comics, etc. before ending off with this:
      BACK TO XIAOLIN SHOWDOWN ROOTS!
      The NEW Xiaolin will follow the original tradition of XIAOLIN SHOWDOWN. We’ll go deeper into the mythology and ancient China where all things started. See the older generation when they were young like young Grand Master Dashi, young Dojo, young Master Fung, young Chase, and Master Guan and let’s not forget Wuya in her prime! (uh oh, watch out!) The legend of the Shen Gong Wu (cool names ensured!). All these stories and familiar characters will return. New good/bad guys will be introduced.
      So there’s your answer

    But yeah, I agree about everything said about this. Chase got butchered and terribly rewritten. Ping Pong wasn't a good addition and Raimundo got disrespected heavily. I do like they gave Kimiko character growth, because her character ended up lacking it, when the show focused on Omi a lot, than gave Raimundo more character growth, I just felt like Clay and Kimiko didn't get much of anything. How Chronicles could've been better.
    1. Replace Ping Pong with Jermaine. Don't think a single fan dislikes Jermaine, and he was teased as being a future Xiaolin Warrior. Just go all the way.
    2. Keep Raimundo as leader, least to begin with. Raimundo's character arc was the best part of the original Xiaolin Showdown and to see it just brushed under the rug with off screen promotions was disappointing.
    3. Either just buy the goddamn name rights to the Shen Gong Wu from WB or make new Wu. Randomly changing their names pleases nobody and only makes it needlessly confusing.
    4. Tweak Willow. Don't have her constantly flirt with her figurative "father" all the time and actually develop the "wanting to make my own name" villain path. Introducing her as a false new student for a few episodes to make the reveal sting the heroes more. Potential wasted more than anything.
    5. Make Omi less of a jerk.

    *Also! Wood is actually an element!* Most people know of the Classical Greek elements of air, earth, fire, and water. However in Chinese culture and alchemy, they had the five elements of Earth, Fire, Metal, Water, and Wood. If you want more information, I highly recommend giving its respective Wikipedia page. It’s a rather interesting read, especially with how the elements had a sort of Rock Paper Scissors dynamic.

      I posted this comment 2 years ago. You have no recent comments to reply to? This is just as important as the terrible reboot's writing. Changing a character's design such as skin color, without any in-story explanation is an issue. It shows that with the writing, someone also wanted to alter the characters drastically; altering Wuya's skin probably to fit with the woke crowd's "dark skin can't be villains!" moto, altering Chase's backstory to fit all the Gen Z idiots who love to hear about romantic betrayals, introducing two characters, one that is literally a fangirl's creation for Chase and the other, just a french carbon copy of Omi. All of this shows that whoever directed (not the creator) wanted to pander and cash grab as much as possible. Does that please you now? Good.@@Stevenbfg

This was so bad that I wrote a fanfic that reset it back to the end of XS to give it another chance, just to make sure that XC didn't have to happen, but still had it tie in to have those who liked XC. That's why I was so confused about this show.
    Because they acted like it wasn't a continuation because of the renaming of everything.
    If they rebooted it one more time they could have made it so that there's a Shen Gong Wu from the original series that split dimensions so shalin Chronicles and shalin showdown are actually two different shows.
    That's the only way I can think of that can fix it.
    AND they could probably do some really cool crossover doing that too!!

    A few years ago I went back through Xiaolin Showdown as a nostalgia trip. It was well worth it, but I was reminded of that cliffhanger-esque ending, I'd love to see a sequel series get picked up by like, Adult Swim or something. Keep the adult content like swears, alcohol usage, etc. to a minimum, but maybe bring the story in a darker, more mature direction. I feel like with the dark vibes the original series had going on, it would be right at home doing that. Keep in the comic relief to keep it balanced out though, that's an absolute must. If it takes itself TOO seriously it would end up flopping for sure.

She did point out communication between different countries did effect the series, but in the writing process that isn't excusable when she had one of the Showdown writers return alongside a handful of experienced writers.

    What is strange is that the creator of this abomination is the same creator of the original series so i have no idea why she decided to ruin such an amazing cartoon with this sequel or reboot or what the hell this was, probably she wanted to make it more family friendly and attract young audience but it failed terribly bad.
