Inside Kashmir’s media crisis: From Interrogations to Imprisonment

- In Srinagar, journalists often quip: there’s freedom of expression in Kashmir, but no freedom after expression.
It is a region long accustomed to restrictions, whether enforced through strikes, curfews, or the looming threat of militancy. Yet, today’s climate feels distinctly different.
During five days of conversations in and around the city, one theme recurs - a deep sense of suffocation after the centre’s August 5, 2019 decisions. And cautious phrases reveal the pervasive sense of fear.
“Yahan bolne ki azadi nahin hai (There’s no freedom to speak here).” “Bolenge toh phone aa jaega (If we speak, we’ll get a call).” “Humain raat ko ghar jana hai, Tihar nahin (We want to go home at night, not to jail).” Yahan ke journalist band hai… (So many journalists here are behind bars).”
And, most commonly: “Yahan sab theek hai (Everything is fine here).”
Unlike the slow erosion of press freedom in mainland India, the situation is far more severe in the valley. Here, journalists speak not of their craft but of surviving an interrogation by one or the other many agencies operating - being asked to come for police verification for the second time in a month, coerced into revealing sources, placed on no-fly lists, or having passports revoked. Some have been interrogated by counterinsurgency forces; others languish in jails under the Public Safety Act or anti-terror.
“Ground reporting in one way is criminalised,” said independent Anees Zargar.
The big challenge though of reporting on this intense scrutiny is the silence it breeds. Few journalists are willing to go on record, and fewer still offer specifics that could make them identifiable. This deliberate vagueness makes it harder to hold authorities accountable, leaving only the signs of a society slowly slicing itself apart.
Journalists are meant to be fearless and are protected by the Constitution of India. But when those protections fade, the impact ripples far beyond newsrooms. As one man noted, “If mainstream politicians can be jailed, if journalists can be arrested under harsh terror laws, what chance do we have?”
This is a familiar refrain across the valley: the jailing of mainstream Kashmiri politicians, activists, and journalists has delivered a clear message to the average Kashmiri - you’re nobody.

India Govt is making big claims about development of Kashmir after abrication of Article 370. Reality is different.
1. I'm from non meter area. In july 2019 we were getting 549/month electricity bill. Now we are getting 1830/month. Around 300% hike. With frequent power cuts. Max of 4 hours/day.
2. First rank in unemployment.
3. AFSPA applied. forces are getting our vehicles & are not accountable/answerable to any damage.
4. Corruption in every competitive exam.
5. Drugs.
6. Rapes cases.
7. Apple growers in loss cox Adani were used to import Apples with negligible import duty.
8. LPG price hike.
9. Late election
10. If jk is same as other states then why PSA, AFSPA.
11. People don't feel secure but scare when seeing security forces.
12. Biggest loss... Abrogation of statehoodship. 😢

I was in Kashmir in July.
There were Army and CRPF every few yards as it was the peak season for Amarnath Yatra. Our driver was visibly afraid of them. Many roads were closed by army by 3 pm. So if you do not return by that time you are stuck in another town. The driver said it was bad when terrorists were running rampant but now things are good. But I am not sure they were speaking sincerely or telling us what we wanted to hear.

Dear we Kashmir's are being stoped everyday on national highway after ever 100 meters. I always get frustrated because of this mess. They will not let you go even if you are seriously ill and want to go to hospital, they don't let you go even if you will get late to reach Office. They lose nothing it is we people who suffer the most. Bayi aap ki gadiyun ko national highway py phir be choda jata hai din Mai. Hamain aap ki gadiyun k liyay 2,2 ya 4,4 ganty be rook k rakhty hain. People are silent because they want to survive. Says it all. Current govt has stifled the country. No wonder J&K is in such despair.
To their credit they have created a New Kashmir like situation in Manipur. Its burning for more than a year and hardly any reports from there.
This elections saved us and gave some time by stopping a clear majority.
Hope this drama ends soon and not just J&K but entire country breathes again.

First time I am watching real truth of kashmir from a news channel on UA-cam, salute 🫡 you for this ground report, we are kashmiri, kashmir is a part of India but according to article 19 the freedoms are mentioned in the constitution has been taken back from kashmir.
I'm seeing these local dailes after a long time here. used to read most of them including national dailies every morning.. then stopped all of a sudden because news began to be limited. Earlier everything was covered

If we take the people of Jammu & Kashmir(Pre-Abrogation of Article 370) out of the conversation, what is left of J&K? It ends up being just a piece of land. It is what it is to most people in the rest of India. Nothing more, nothing less. That's the most tragic part of this whole saga. We Indians have let ourselves down. What is India without its people and its diversity? And what is J&K without its people? One feels sad and helpless that we are where we are as a nation where fear, hate, and religious bigotry drive our polity. Jai Hind.

Your report is fabulous, Manisha. It is extensive, in-depth, truthful, and meticulous. It's highly praiseworthy. It shows a very important problem of J&K. It's alarming and I am sure this stifling of press will lead to further deterioration of human rights, eventually turning into more conflicts. And I think the drugs problem is bigger than what it appears. Without involvement of ......it is impossible. A lot of .... people are corrupt and making huge money by way of drugs.
