Hands down the best spy film ever made in mainstream commercial hollywood. The way you are sucked in this film as a viewer right from the opening scene till that brilliant climax is unmatched by any other spy thriller ever made. RIP Tony Scott, thank you for gifting us this masterpiece.
I would argue, if one want to analyse the movie through a gender theoretical lens, it's a blatantly anti-patriarchic movie. (Not an anti-men movie though.) It openly displays the culture of imperialistic oppression on the political level and mirrors it with this group of old white rich men that actually see their work as a game, while actually involved people suffer and die. Imho, the movie dismantles in its narrative the justification for this ideology, Redford try to defend on the roof top scene in berlin. This scene and also the end of the training scene where he says, _'put money on the side for your retirement, don't touch it, not for anyone ever.'_ and _'don't risk your life or your career for an asset, if it comes down to you or them send some flowers'._ But at the end of the movie Redford has changed his attitude (or 'ideology', if you will) fundamental. And one of the most genius parts of the movie is, imho, that the movie don't just let his character tells the audience his change of mind - he never says something about that - but instead, it shows it through his actions throughout the whole (present timeline) of the movie. The emotional hit at the end is so powerful because every single action of present timeline Redford has charged it up, and the reason why we as the audience doesn't see it coming is, because till the end we don't even know that there is a target that deserves to get hit. The clever use of the two timelines make it, that the speech on the roof in berlin comes pretty much at the end of the movie, it's the last flashback sequence. Here Redford says _'other people are actually worthless, this is all a game, a SPY GAME.'_ The enemy wasn't some foreign agency, the enemy was in them self all along. Maybe one could argue it's a man's movie because it shows that culturally 'manly man' are so afraid of the pain of losing someone close, that they don't dare to care for people they don't control. And this fear makes them so lonely and emotionally disconnected from society that they see the death and suffer as a game. Maybe many men feel understood by the movie, even if they probably couldn't explain why. [Edit]: On the poster is the sentence written: _'It's not how you play the game... We'll never get a political movie critical of China from Hollywood again. The WTO deal in 2001 has made film studios aware not to cast the CCP in a negative light. Add to that the progressives keep confusing filmmakers racism vs valid criticism of the Chinese. This movie was prophetic.
idk man.. if ur not into so much of talking and talking just dont watch it. i fell asleep multiple times during the movie and found it frekin boring. now im hella pissed i wasted my dam time after watching this by being influenced from all these comments 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻

They say this is 'a man's movie' but I am a woman and I had to buy it on the store after watching it. This is art, luxury.
