    It's all about class envy. Labour's default position is "lets screw the wealthy landowner." They resent the countryside and its people and indulge in an absurd programme of revenge. Their policy will end up with all agricultural land being owned by Pension Funds , Banks and Investment Trusts, all of which will drive rents through the roof. And prices follow rents like night follows day!
    Me, I own 60,000 acres of agricultural land and will not pay a penny in inheritance tax - because I live in Australia where there is no such tax.. What Starmer/Reeves nonsense means is that I can produce in OZ, transport my product half way round the world, and still beat the British Farmer on price. Barmy! No, utterly Bat shit crazy.

    My family were farmers with records back to the 1600’s, some generations owners, some generations tenants. My paternal grandfather bought the farm in 1934. My maternal grandfather’s farm was sold by the landlord for housing on the outskirts of Liverpool in 1956.
    I sold the family farm after Blair came to power to ‘modernise’ Britain. I could see the writing on the wall and emigrated to farm in Canada. The best decision I ever made. More than half the land we now farm is already in my son’s name in case the rodent Trudeau adopts this hideous policy.
    I pray for a plague to descend upon the House now under control of the Socialists.

    Hi Rich, everybody is full of advise, I will just explain what I have done as an example, split the title of the farm into 2, put a FBT on the different titles and rent it back to the business, (reducing the value of the farm on paper because there is a tenancy on it) the house could be in a different title so you would get a personal allowance on it for a couple 500k each,so looking at it for myself you are soon protecting 3 to 4 million. It might sound complex but once you get your head round it, it isn't really. Just an example, frustrating I know, just another challenge to get round ! Good luck Jon

    My farm has been in my family since 1879. It is 360 acres. I bought it off my Grand Father's estate in 1982. I gave $2500 an acre. It took me 25 years to pay that off. That land today would sell for $20,000 an acre now. That is $7.2 million. We are not even talking about machinery and livestock. So for easy figuring lets just use $9 million. So that would cause a estate tax bill of $1.6 million. On a 30 year note at 6% the payment is $118,000 annually or $10K each month. That is $500 clear profit per acre every year. Never going to happen in real life.
    Like Richard stated everything on the farm had income tax paid on it. So an estate tax is a double taxation.

    £10K per acre is standard land value in England now, so the land value alone of a relatively small 100 acre farm is already at £1m before taking into consideration the Farmhouse, Barns, Machinery and livestock. Its ridiculous, and being touted as targeting rich landlords and estates, yet "they" already have the tax evasion infrastructure in place for their non-agricultural assets so will be simple for them to combine assets and continue to avoid IHT, in reality this will only hit cash poor generational farmers. And the land will either be broken up to pay the tax or sold entirely and bought up by Dyson and others seeking to monopolise farming and land ownership. Sad days, though the 7 year rule still stands, if your lad is keen transfer ownership to him as early as possible

    Has anyone considered that the problem with small family farms, is just that ! That they are small and run by one man's ideas, usually dad, or grandad. just because a person has farmed all their life doesn't automatically make them agricultural economic geniuses. Quite the opposite! Businesses need constant input of new and often conflicting ideas to keep ahead of the game. Everything that I have seen of interviews with small family farmers illustrates perfectly that they are unable to keep up, let alone get ahead. if small farms are struggling to remain viable, they should not be kept on economic life support at the taxpayers' expense. As is perfectly demonstrated by supermarkets, the economies of scale are always the best for the benefit of ordinary people. The rich can shop at Waitrose and the chique farmers' markets, but for most of us, it's always going to be Tesco. The essence of agriculture is food production and large, efficient, modern farms are the future of food sustainability in isolationist Britain. British farming has been on life support for far too long. Either "GROW or GO" but don't expect the state to provide "perks" so you can safeguard your millions for "The Family"! Those days are gone.

    • @thefunkyfarmer
      @thefunkyfarmer  6 днів тому

      I'd disagree with you regarding small family farms being inefficient. They can be just as cost effective as large farms.
      what really hampers farms is the inability to set the price for their produce.

    "I'm not entirely sure how it works in the UK, but I’m 23 and from the Netherlands. When I turned 18, I was registered as a co-owner of the family farm to start building equity there. The longer I’m a co-owner, the lower the inheritance tax will eventually be, with the maximum benefit reached after about 10 years. Here, it’s common to be paying off a farm/father until you’re in your 50s or 60s. BUt indeed these days, farms have become so large and valuable that it's often too costly for children to take them over, as it’s nearly impossible to secure a mortgage for such high values. For smaller farms, this isn’t as much of an issue since they’re still feasible to pay off." dont lose hope Where there's a will, there's a way,

    I am the third generation dairy farmer on our 140 acre farm, milking 85 cows. My son would be the fourth generation. But unfortunately my 85 year old mother is the legal owner of the farm. My mother & farther built the farm up to a size that was viable to work & make a living from. But now we will be facing such a large tax bill we would have to sell land which would be catastrophic for the business. How labour can say it doesn’t affect small family farms is unbelievable. We will be finished.

I can't believe they aren't going to change this due to the total cock up they've made - It'll wreck the farming fabric quickly... either adjust the allowance to reflect the true value or (hopefully) scrap it back to how it was. But i fear there'll be many who get caught up in this due to an inheritance situation now, before it gets changed...

    People are commenting that this can be avoided by gifting the assets. They don't realise that gifting takes 7 years or so and at what point do you pull the trigger on that? Unexpected things can happen on farms like an accident resulting in death so planning for that is not that easy. We expected this from Labour. You are correct in everything you say you are better off working for the council etc, the only reason you are still farming is due to it being in your blood and the attachment you have from watching those in your family work hard there in generations before you and you feel responsible to carry the torch as we know the level of work required vs what you get back is equivalent to about 4 council jobs. I say these things as I also face these challenges.

    Hi Richard, The Government know full well what they are doing. The general idea is to get small - medium farmers out of business , it is creeping collectivisation, not all that different from the USSR, Only thing different this time is big business will move in to take over your beautiful holding, the same BS is going on over here in Ireland. Farmers rarely get a chance to buy extra land, it is nearly always car dealership's , truckers etc. hang in there boss- Do Not Sell Your Holding.

  • @JonDingle
    @JonDingle 21 день тому +2

    We need some balance. No other micro to small business (I include the self employed like me) have enjoyed the support that farmers have had since the end of WW2. A viable farm is 200+ acres plus ingoings and will require a budge of £million to buy in. The IHT will hit ALL small holdings and farms. The way to protect the family farm is to put it into a trust, make ALL the family that want to be part of the farm "trustees" and you work the farm as a trust. As history shows, budget policies can be abandoned/reversed so whilst the new IHT rule is unfortunate, it could have been worse (40%) and it could be reversed by a future government.
    Inheritance tax shouldn't be applied on anything, because everyone paid tax to either create, maintain and or build the asset un the first place.
